[quote]For quite some time now, I am trying to look after certain matters, concerning new members. With Djive gone, MM rarely updating his newcomer thread and RK's thread off to waste, as it is not updated, I have decided to step forward and create a thread in the Newcomers forum where I would compile seemingly all the information that is of colossal value for those that are about to join Heroes Community under one roof. Some may think I am doing this solely for my own purposes (even though I hope not), but I see nothing personal here -- I am just trying to better the community, if possible. There are a great many threads where the newcomers come and go as they please to find certain info about the site, but those threads have scattered information (I will give the links to them, of course, as I am not planning to copy-paste things here). So, as I have introduced you to the thread, I want to introduce new members to HC as it is. [green][b]EVERYONE, WELCOME TO HEROES COMMUNITY!!![/b][/green] [IMG]http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c246/talekdolorn/untitled.png[/IMG] Picture Copyright Hadragon.com I (Talek Do'Lorn, TDL) welcome you all to Heroes Community. I may not be the one you are looking for, as I am neither a moderator, nor an admin of this board, but I, along with the senior and recently-joined members of HC, care to introduce you to this outstanding forum. In this thread, I shall try to assemble all the useful information for you and put it in a single place to make it easier to use. A little below, you shall find a short index of threads from where I collected the information and a short introduction to various forums, made by Pandora (updated it). Before even registering (if you haven't yet), please review the most important section of Heroes Community - The [url=http://heroescommunity.com/faq.php3]Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)[/url]. Do not forget to follow these rules: [green]try to stay on-topic, do not SPAM, be original and creative, and remember the golden one, [b]do unto others as you would have them do unto you[/b]. In simpler words, do not fight anger vs. anger. It will do you no good.[/green] [url=http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=15818]You are new? Come here first and introduce yourself![/url] Also, you might as well take a visit to the [url=http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=8176]Newcomers: Please Read.[/url] thread in Turban Tribunal and [url=http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=8525]Vital info for you to know[/url] thread by MM in the Tavern forum. To keep in touch with latest developments concerning the renovation of the community, have a look at the [url=http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=5930]Renovation of HC[/url] thread. If you are looking for particular info about a specific forum or something related to the discussions that are there, take a tour of the forum that interests you. Almost every single forum has its own Feedback thread, where the members give their opinions on what to improve or just give feedback about what is happening there, the Table of Contents, where supposedly ALL of the thread links are assembled, and lists of +QP awarded posts, which means, the posts that mostly were of immeasurable quality and whose creators were rewarded for that. Now, I shall introduce you to a small *pocket-dictionary* for you to use whenever you please :) Abbreviations, [b]So, What is the Heroes Community (HC, as we abbreviate)?[/b] Well, that is a question you should ask every member that visits the board every so often. It is truly one of the best forums that are Not only it is one of the best forums on the net that are mostly dedicated to the never-ending Heroes of Might and Magic series, but also a forum of everlasting fun and immeasurable joy. Already over fifteen different forums with lots of excellent threads and plenty of friendly members from all over the world that make this board even better every single day. [b]And the Admin, Mage of the Land -- Valeriy?[/b] Just guess :) He's the head of this board. He was the one who dedicated an immense portion of his life and time into Heroes Community, so as to make it a superb place for seemingly everyone who seeked joy. He was the one, who constantly adds new things, trying to make the board better and easier, less complex, but at the same time, more interesting. To know more about him, read his up-to-date biography on his personal page (which is extremely long one, by the way :D). [b]OK. How about the Moderators? Who are they?[/b] These dedicated people are "the eyes, the hands and the legs" of the admin. They are the ones to maintain equilibrium (balance, in other words) around the board. Moderators (MODs) help Val control the board by organizing threads, putting everything in proper order, give out bonuses and penalties to valued members. Yet, the ModSquad is constantly changing and is constantly being reformed due to inactivity of some moderators (*sighs*, the inevitable Real Life). However, in order to prove helpful, you do not have to be a moderator yourself :) [b]And what ranks are there... Those yellow and red stars?[/b] There are various ranks here on HC that are achieved by posting and writing posts of superb quality. HC has a huge difference from any other forum/board that exists. There are ranks for quality posts. That’s one of the things that makes this forum unique and very interesting, as people tend to gain more and more of them so as to gain various bonuses, such as removed flood-protect (the thing that forbids you to post two times in a row, making you wait for another 90 seconds) or ability to post a new thread more frequently, as you are limited to 10 posts per 1 new thread. Go take a look at the FAQ where it is explained in detail. [b]SPAM... Many people are folly about it... What is it?[/b] Who told you that? Oh noes, people are again up for another wave :S Off-topic posts are always considered SPAM. One-liners are considered too. We have a forum where the spammers reign, so if you want to gag about, laugh and have fun posting nonsense, playing word games and such, have a go there. The people shall meet you kindly there, but don't let them dis you (you don't want to know what that means ;)). [b]Smilies and BB Code... What are they?[/b] To make fonts go [b]bold[/b], [i]italic[/i], [u]underlined[/u] or [green]c[/green]ol[blue]o[/blue]re[red]d[/red], as you do with Microsoft Word you must use the BB code. To insert a BBcode such as making text go bold, either highlight the section of the text and click on the bold icon or simply put
in front and
after the section, with <> signs changed into brackets [ ] [. BB Code is mostly used to outline or punctuate a text. Also, the code is used to include images and site links. Smilies on the other hand are another way to explain your emotions (emoticons) or another mark for punctuation. There are already way over 30 smilies here. Plus, they are extremely easy to use - just click on the icon next to the message box, and here we go ;) [b]So far, so good... Now explain me, what do those GLs, ROFLs and other meaningless words mean...[/b] They are not meaningless, no way. They are a type of international "speech" we use, so to say. First of all, these shortened words are called abbreviations. There are a pleny of them and each day you may find even new ones. Mostly, the abbreviate words that show our emotions or some other words. Down below, there is a short, easy-to-use guide of what abbreviations are there. I will update this list, so do not forget this thread once you view/read it. I think this will prove useful not only to the new members... M&M - Might and Magic HOMM - Heroes of Might and Magic ;) AFAIK - As Far As I Know ROFL - Rolling on Floor Laughing ROFLMAO - Rolling on Floor Laughing my A** off WTF - What The **** GL - Good Luck LOL - Laugh out Loud IIRC - If I Remember Correctly OMG - Oh My God OMFG - Oh My ******* God w00t - Yay! or Yeah! j/k - Joking BTW - By The Way brb - Be Right Back k - OK u - You y - Why IMO - In My Opinion IMHO - In My Humble Opinion dunno - Don't Know NP - no problem nm - normal cya - see you gtg - Got To Go GG - good game (or it can mean GuitarGuy - a member of the board or Guardians Grove - another forum) Foobum - fool (more polite way) coo - cool wikkid - wicked Did you notice I misplaced some words with *? That means cursing and swearing is not allowed and will result in warnings, and with time, in penalties. Be aware! Also, in case you find new ones, don't be afraid and post them here. I'll gladly add them to the list. [b]I felt offended... Someone called me a n00b! What does that mean?[/b] No worries, young friend. N00b, even though it isn't a nice word and should not be overused, means newbie, whereas it reflects that you are a new member to the board or to a game. Don't take it too deeply and remember the golden rule! :) [b]How do I search the Boards, eh?[/b] SImply use the Search engine... It is quite easy to use, but mind your step, sometimes it may prove difficult to search for something special. [b]There are advertisements and some kind of shifting ticker below... What is it?[/b] Advertisements are funding the board, so they are doing a good job here - mind them here. They are not annoying, believe me :) And about that ticker... That is Age of Heroes, a partner site of Val (HeroesofMightandMagic.com), news ticker that notifies us of all the new updates, news concerning HC and such. Most compatible and up-to-date, as well as easy to use, Heroes' information database. Care to go there ;) [b]HC Messenger?! You have your own messaging system?[/b] Aye, we have it. HCM - Heroes Community Messenger - is a messaging system used only on this board. It is simply unique. The messages are sent to one another seemingly instantly. Its interface is also very nice (green, mmmm) and it is easy to use - click a button and you are already there. It is also very convenient to use it as you will be notified whenever you receive a new message. HCM can be not only used to chat with one another, but to make new friends. People here are nice and friendly, and most would be pleased if you wanted to make friends with them. Have any questions about the board? Simply send a message and your question will soon be answered. There are some rules that you must follow, but FAQ and the introductory page of HC Messenger will explain it to you. Remember that your posts must be according to the rules of the board - no cursing, abuse, other illegal material allowed. [b]A reminder for swearing?[/b] Yes, that should do. It is fully forbidden to swear on this forum, as well as do anything else that breaks the laws of Heroes Community's Code of Conduct. This applies to everyone, from members to administrator - we are all equal here. In case you see someone cursing, you should report the curses to moderators. That is completely illegal and is considered to be not nice. Not to mention, we all like when one's following the etiquette :) [b]So, where is that guide that will explain what forums are there?[/b] Here is the forum guide I promised.
