Local multiplayer problem

I'm new here, but a HMM fan nonetheless.
I wanna do a direct connection or ipx game with another computer I have using heroes of might and magic 3 complete, instead of having 2 people sit at my computer which can get annoying. The other computer can select all multiplayer options, modem, ipx, direct connect, etc.. but my computer cannot. I get 'error initializing serail connection(modem, ipx, etc), I've reinstalled the game many times, nothing seems to work. I'd like to have help on figuring out why my computer can't do this when the other one can, and how to fix it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who have had these problems.
Both computers have windows XP pro.
Mine is a AMD Athlon XP 2200+.
Other one is Intel Celerson 1.8.
I have 512mb ram.
Other has 256.

Can i possibly get any help? It'd be very appreciated, I want to play a game with my friend and be able to alt tab and do other stuff while he does his turn.

First of all...welcome to HC!

Are you using a Router, Hub, or Switch to connect both computers? If you are, that could be the source of your problems.

However, if you are just using a regular Ethernet cable to connect both computers, then you will not be able to play together, guaranteed. In order to connect 2 computers together using only 1 cable, you will need to use something other than an RJ45 CAT5E Patch Cable. You should be looking for a Bi-directional RJX cable, I think.

Let me know how it works out or if you need more help. The Library is definitely the place to look for answers to these types of questions.

Welome to HC, once again!

Heh, posted this before with no answers, was impatient so made another post..
Right now, the two computers are crosslinked just fine, I can trasnfer files back and forth and play LAN games through UDP and IPX in a few other games. Examples are Descent 2, Warcraft3, and Starcraft. One computer can host/join games without getting any errors but mine can't. The errors are messages within Homm3complete, not errors that my computer would give it.. Its as if I have no network devices that the game can detect. Come to think of it, this computer has Windows XP service pack 2 and the other doesn't even have service pack 1 installed on it yet. If someone may think that effects my computer, give me a few reasons

Are there any patches for Homm3complete that might update some compatibility?

EDIT: Is there a place i can temporarily upload a screenshot of the error?

Dunno about reasons, but sure could be that. Eh, don't know much about that stuff but next two questions can answer.

No patches needed for Heroes Complete. That's 4.0 version that is also compatible with 1.4 RoE and 3.2 SoD.

I don't think this will help, but anyway, make sure that you have configured your firewall properly.

Nope doesn't affect anything.
Can I get someone who plays Homm3 on WinXP Pro SP2 to check and see if they can access any multiplayer options and report the outcome?

Same for me...

Now this is indeed an intersting case. Another thing which you might try is reinstall DirectX, or install a newer version of it (or, if the newest is already installed, install an older one). It's possible that DirectPlay has some trouble with Heroes III...

I beleive you have helped me find the problem, now I just need to resolve it. Going to try and reinstalling and hopefully that works, I don't want to downgrade from 9.0c.
The error I get as shown below is from opening Directx, I'm just gonna assume it is Directx directplay that may be causing my problems in Homm3.

EDIT: Can't figure out how to unistall DirectX...

Big-Brother is watching you!

Knowing Microsoft, you probably aren't able to uninstall Direct X on your CPU at all, since it's one of "their" applications. Looks like you'll have to buy a MAC or use Linux...(evil grin) MUWHAHAHA!

I got it to working properly, this quote is from another place I posted this. Hope this may helps others.

Quote:
Not to long ago I was getting errors from a game where I was unable to use any network device. Modem, IPX, serial connection, etc.. were not able to be used. I figure out that some applications rely on DirectX's Directplay to operate remote connections. At this time I was getting the following error after opening DirectX Diagnostic Tool. For those who would like to know how I fixed this for a future reference or current issue, I will explain.

Firstly, I will provide my situation. I couldn't unistall DirectX or reinstall. When reinstalling, you would accept the terms, then it would skip the whole installation to say it is completed and to no avail, there are only a few ways to unistall directX from what I understand.

I used a program that was thought highly of called DirectX Eradicator. This was unable to unistall so many files to revert back to version 8.1a from 9.0c. I still had the problem installing the new DirectX, so this problem was somewhat obvious to do with Service Pack 2. I unistalled SP2 using Add/Remove programs from Control Panel, rebooted, and the reinstall worked fine. I reinstalled the game and I once again able to play serial games. For reference, the game is Heroes of Might and Magic III. Old game, but still very fun.

There may be other ways of fixing the problem I had, but this is what I had figured out.
