Heroes Skills

PUG POLL
What is the best type of special skill a hero can have? (Like Gelu's ability to upgrade archers into sharpshooters etc.)

Responses:
Creature Upgrade (Like Gelu)
Starting Spell
Stronger Creatures (Like every level above 1 goblins gain +1...)
Addition to skill (e.g. Hero gives extra 250 gold p/day)

I think the best special is to have a special in a secondary skill, for example logistics or offense.

From what I've read about HOMM4 their aren't any specials anymore...so it's a moot point.

BUT, for the sake of discussion...the special upgrades like Gelu are the best.
Bonus to secondary skills (other than frickin' First Aid, Mysticism and Eagle Eye) are good also.
I think the least useful is starting with a spell 'cause it's only a real advantage early...

secondary skills are best

Upgrading elves to sharpshooters is nice, but not great. eg Gelu will not get any better (cheaper) when he is gaining levels. A hero like Gundula (my personal favo) will gain extra offense (5%) for every level she gains!! Wich means:

Every level she gains she gets stronger then the level she had before. Example:

Let´s say you have exp offense (30% extra damage). You are level 1 and you become lvl 2. 30 x 1,05 = 31,5% extra damage. That is 1.5% extra.  When she gains another lvl you get 31,5 x 1,05 = 33,08. Wich is an extra growth of 1,58% 0,08 more then the level before. And this amount continues to grow faster and faster.

A level 20 Gundula will kill a lvl 20 Gelu easily. Sharpshooters are nice but do not affect the entire army and they die pretty fast. If you have a creature that reaches the other side (toward the sharpshooters) they are already useless. This is the same for enchanters though they are somewhat stronger

From a Necro Fan

Special , hmmm.....

Think greatest special is that of a spell, eg chain lightning from the blue genie guy(forgot his name though)

Best is the necro(forgot name also) who specializes in Animate cause if u have that u are absolutely invinsible.

Hate to do this,but...

All that you are discussing will not be around in Heroes4.The specialty system has been abolished, according to various reliable sources.

That's quite a pity though. That was one characteristic that differentiated heroes of same classes. It made me remember their identities, unlike in Heroes2 when every hero of the same works all the same except that they lookeddifferent

Know this is a dead topic for HOMM4...

Don't disagree much with the specials being great, but the amount of money you save by not needing to build a large army (because you have sharpshooters or enchanters) in the early portion of the game is a huge benefit.
Certainly their worth over time diminishes, but it's quite possible to go a couple of months without needing to purchase new units if you have a handful of sharpshooters or enchanters. For clearing the map and capturing mines early without taking losses, they're a big advantage.
Sure, a lev 20 Gelu would probably go down against your lev 20 character, but more than likely Gelu would have a much larger army (from lack of losses along the way) and would probably be in a better position with resources, gold, and units from not needing to spend money building up a large army to capture resources.

But since this is all NA for HOMM4...I'll stop

hmmm... the only problem w/that statement is that it costs money for gelu/dracon to upgrade things to sharpshooters/enchanters.

also enchanters have no melee penalty, and cast mass random beneficial spell each round, and have 30 hp instead of the sharpshooters 15... so they are muuuuuch better than sharpshooters.  the only kinda cool thing is that the sharshooters have the golden bow effect - they never have the broken arrow.

Id say that it all comes down to which kind of hero it is.

Main Hero: 2.nd skill speciality with off/def and log. example: Hack, Tazar and Dessa.

Scouts: resource/cash specials, the good 4th lvl heroes and Thant are also good because when someone get scholar they can teach their speciality spell to main hero.

Cheesus, heroes specialties doesnt work the way you described it. The bonus to skill/level = 5% of the skill percentage. For example, for hero with expert necromancy (30%) the bonus is 5% * 30 % = 1.5%. Level 20 Vidomina will have 60% necromany (30% + 20 * 1.5%). If by some reason Vidomina has only basic necromany (10%) then level 20 Vido will have only 20% necromancy.

My favorite heroes specialties:
1. Logistics
2. Intelligence
3. Armorer
4. Offence
5. Necromancy (depending on the map, may be higher)
6. Archery (with some towns).
.
.
.
Last one is Resistance lol. Yesterday played a game with Lichking and his level 30 or so Thorgrim didn't block a single spell lol
j/k

When Thorgrim gets 26 or higher, his Resistance drops to Zero.

Best Spez is Prayer in my eyes. Would be at least, if it would come without learning in Backpack

Ah so, Cheesus, you are wrong. The 5% always count to the Baseskill, means plain 1.5% for mastered Offense per level, never more.
Also Offense itself counts to the Basedam without Attack/Defense, means the additional Damage for SuperOffense Stronghold Heros is a joke.

The abolishment of skills in Heroes 4 does make me a saaaaaad out-lander. But it is even worse for level one spellcasters because you can't actually choose which starting spell you have.
Oh well.

Hard to choose...

I think all specialities are good...
As for me, creature upg. specl is the best... No, GELU's special is the best... of course it costs money - a lot of money - and on exp/impossible levels isn't very good. But you get very strong creatures... also I like spell specialities - but only for high level spells like Chain/Shower/Resurrect/Animate/Prayer.
Sometimes speciality on Sec. Skills like Offense/Armorer/Logistics/Archery/Sorcery/etc. is good also.
And it's always good to have +1 resource or +350 gold per day or Lord Haart as your secondary...

btw Why??? Thorgrim's Resist drops to zero at level 26???

You don't need to use Gelu as a main, just use him to transport new troops to your main, upgrading as you go and you still get his benefit.  The speed with which you can clear out the map can be incredible, and when things get tougher towards the end, you still have the option of using whatever specialist helps the most.
