Capital first or creatures?

I have not played on multiplayer but have played through Restoration & Armageddons Blade & have started Shadow. I have always aimed at Capitol first , then creatures, but i notice from the forum other players have a very different approach & build up the creature generators. Some people get to L7 in week one! I would apprexciate tips & feedback.

You should first build the capitol and then the creature dwellings, so that you will have more money to spend for the town's development, that's what I think at least.
____________
It's optional.

It depands.

There are certain maps that I know which are extremly rich, on those maps I never even built a city hall or even a market place b/c I have no need for it.

Its much better to have more creatures and some of them upgraded.

On maps that I dont know, I usually sent 2 or 3 scouts before I leave the castle with my main.

By then you can see if the map is rich or not. If not, go for the capitol but never at all cost. I mean you should built castle and some creature dwellings too.

Actually it depends greatly on what town you're playing.

Tower needs lots of money so capitol is needed really fast, on the other hand if you play Stronghold go for the creatures and attack fast.

That's just my oppinion, I hope it helped a bit.

Yes it does depend on the map.
Most likely I will build the creatures first because, your creatures will add up in #'s when you build the dwelling.I try to build them in week one, so the #'s will grow by week 2. Thats when I can venture out further.
(watch out Plague lol)
Usually on a smaller map I try to go for at least a city hall, but I still work on creatures because of the reason above.
I try to work on getting 7th lv creatures in week one.
you have to be careful because if you plan on building 7th lv creatures since day 1 & for some reason you cant, it might hurt you later on, especially in castle.
Money will always be there, & there are towns that can help you financially.
Look around with some scout for resources.

I hope my opponent dont get archangels lol.

Difficulty matters also. Unless the map is full of money, you  propably won`t get far with creature buildings, atleast on impossible difficulty. Having creatures in dwellings won`t help you if you don`t have money to buy them. Especially when enemy hero is near. Capitol also helps to build those expensive 7th level creature dwellings earlier.

Regardless of difficulty, you should atleast try to get this creature dwellings and upgrades in first week. You can postpone upgrade to the second week.

Tower: Upgrade Workshop.
Castle: Build and upgrade Archer`s Tower.
Stronghold: Cliff nest.
Conflux: Upgrade Magic Lantern.
Inferno: Build and upgrade Cages.
Necropolis: Build and upgrade Estates. If upgrade is not possible, try to get Wraiths.
Fortress: Build and upgrade Dragon Fly hive or build Wyvern dwelling if enough resources.
Rampart: Build and upgrade Elf dwelling.

The key is that on most toh maps, there are some relics around, and the whole game is about getting these first, and then get back and kick your opponents butt, if he/she hasn't already been sneaking up on you and taken your main town. Fortunately, in most toh maps, you are separated by a pack of tough monsters, so that he/she can't reach you until at least weeks 3 or 4. In these maps getting as most 7th level creatures and the relics as soon as possible is the most important thing you do.

On normal (100% or 130%) difficulty u should always be able to get 7th level creature 1st week. Remember that 1 dragon (green or red or whatever) can kill 100-200 1st level creatures, and even more if accompanied by a split stack of your own 1st level creatures, and yet more with a good hero.
Then u should be able to grab those mines u weren't able to grab 1st week.

Remember also that in most maps, there are a trading post, which give u 1 crystal for 2 sulfurs etc, which is far better rates than if u build a marketplace.

And yet, if u never choose experience, but always resources, there should normally be no problems getting the gold you need for getting the creatures you need. I don't say that u should always go for resources (because that is stupid), but if u lack 500 gold to build the dragon cave on day 7, it's clear what to do.

In small maps with less resources, go for the necro town, and stop at dread knights. In bigger maps, choose dungeon and head for the blackies. By the time you meet your opponent, he/she probably has some nasty magic (and you too, of course), which only the blackies are resistant to.

puh.... that one was long

Tower: Upgrade Workshop.
- (good idea)
Castle: Build and upgrade Archer`s Tower.
- if possible, go for monks before upg archers, and maybe even portal of glory if you're rich enough.
Stronghold: Cliff nest.
- damn good idea, also recommended to build behemoth crag.
Conflux: Upgrade Magic Lantern.
- if you can afford it and buy psychic elementals or firebirds, do that instead.
Inferno: Build and upgrade Cages.
- instead I always build demons, mage guild, then fire lake, then perhaps even hell hole before I build this.
Necropolis: Build and upgrade Estates. If upgrade is not possible, try to get Wraiths.
- hehe, I'll go entire games and never buy wight structure.  I always try to build (first) mage guild, mausoleum (lich), estates (vamps), then black knights before this structure.  Vampire Lords are awesome but unless you have huge numbers of them, black knights and skeletons will always be your most powerful armies.
Fortress: Build and upgrade Dragon Fly hive or build Wyvern dwelling if enough resources.
- wyverns are great at first, but before upgrading flies, I'd build either basilisk then hydra pond (if I'm rich), or perhaps gorgons and basilisks first.
Rampart: Build and upgrade Elf dwelling.
- if you need artillery soon, it's a good idea.  I usually build unicorn structure and castle before upgrading elves.

ALL this stuff depends on your resources.  If on impossible difficulty, my own strategy changes to something more like what Thunder has recommended.

Exception maybe for the conflux, There should be no need to upgrade anything in the first week.
In the tower wait till you get the mages for shooters that way you can get both the 5th & 6th lv creature & possibly the citidel or the townhall.
Upgrades will come in time but try to concentrate on building creatures & money sec week.
If you can try to build a castle as early as possible, so your troops can add up.
Having for example four to 5 angels in week 2 will help out alot.
Those are all examples but I would wait on most upgrades in the early weeks because you have other important things to worry about.
Exception of upgrading like gremlins & archers etc. I would do that on the sec week.

Upgrades should always have 2nd priority, as they do not influence the weekly growth.
Wights and wraiths are almost useless, I never build the wight dwelling...

Take advantage of the refugee camps as well. Even if those monsters are not the strongest (although sometimes you can recruit angels, blackies etc.), they can be used as cannon fodder to save your 'own' monsters.

I haven't seen anyone else answer this one.  toh stands for Tournament of Honour (http://www.toheroes.com/) and the maps there ... well, I've not played any, but scuttlebutt indicates that they are much richer in resources than the maps I'm used to playing over at http://www.astralwizard.com/.

And on *those* maps I personally usually find I want City Hall by the end of week 1 (day 8 ok) and Capitol as soon as practical after that - because if I leave Capitol too long, I also have to leave my L7 dwelling till week 3 (or even 4!) because I just can't afford it.

Comes down to the usual answer for most HOMM decisions, therefore - 'depends'!  :-)

I dont get it.
If the toh maps are rich with resources, why not go for at least a townhall & creatures.
I mean if the map is full of goodies, wont you have the money to do a city hall week 2?

Play AI is very different from vs human. You can do either
way ($$$ or creatures) and still win vs AI.

But if you still stick to money before creatures policy, I assure you that you will be rushed and died as a rich man. This is especially true for a lot of online maps which are only medium to large size. (come on, how many of
you will play XL maps online ???)

Well, as I myself only have very few online exp, so maybe more experienced players can say more about it.

It depends on the map because sometimes the resources can be so scarce that you wont get to build 7th lv creature.
Check your surrounding during the biggining of the first week & see if you have a chance of building a 7th lv creature dwelling.
If not you probally should work on getting a citidel or even a castle.
But if money could be a problem then you might have to make money instead.
Try to build some creatures so the population can grow early.
