The ports H3 uses

This has been a question I have seen alot! If you have a firewall or a router these are the ports you need free!

H3 uses direct play directX.
The ports of direct play are:

2300 to 2400 TCP and UDP
6073 and 47624 TCP and UDP

I'll just add a bit of info here that may help someone else out. I have been trying to get Heros3 to work thru my router for 6 weeks and finally figured it out two days ago.  The problem I had was that everywhere I had read the advice was make an entry in the "special applications" setup page of the router with a trigger port setting of 6073 or 47624 which you set to open the port range of 2300 to 2400 as you show above.  This still did not solve the problem until I recently discovered that I needed to also add the trigger ports (6073 and 47624) to the "Virtual Server" setup section of my router.  Now the game works fine though the router.  Hope this helps someone else out.

Also, I still cant get the game to work with the dmz setting.  I don't need it to now but it still bugs me that I cant figure why it will not work.

Man I'm lucky

I can't believe it- but this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for.  I've been working on this thing for a couple days now- (I just rebought HMM3...this time Complete)...But I'm having problems playing it with a friend.  She goes to UGA- and obviously- the network they are on is not being very helpful.  On top of that- I'm on the other side of a router in my apartment.  So do any of you have any suggestions on how to get STARTED trying to get a game playing between the two of us???  (My router is a linksys)

Go to this web site to test if the ports required for DirectX7 games (Heros3) are “Stealth” or not.  This will check if your internet service provider is blocking some ports that you need to connect to games.  Make sure your WinXP fire wall is off before doing this test.

http://grc.com/default.htm

Scroll down to the middle of the page and click on “ShieldsUp”

This should bring you to a page where, at the bottom, you can type in the ports you want to be externally probed.  It only checks 64 ports at a time so you will need to make 2 or 3 runs to check all the ports.  You can use a dash (-) between the port numbers to specify a range of ports (eg: 2300-2350)

For DirectX6 and DirectX7 games you need these ports to be “Open” or “Closed” but not “Stealth”

2300 thru 2400  (Check 2300-2350 and then 2350-2400)

and 47624

To use the MSN Gaming zone and to run newer DirectX8 and DirectX9 games you will also need these ports to be not “Stealth”:

6667

28800-29100  (300 ports to scan so you will need to run at least 5 scans to cover the range)

6073

Other app’s that may be of interest like Kazaa file sharing use ports 1214 and 80

If you use a router, these are the ports you have to add to the port forwarding section and have enabled in order to play thru your router.  You can use this web site to check if your router port forwarding is set properly

You can also configure the WinXP firewall to allow these ports to be open if you want to spend a few hours playing with it!

So Far So Good

So far it seems like everything is successful!! They were ALL in stealth mode- I THINK it was because I still had XP Firewall up- I honestly dont remember if I took that off or not last night when i was working on it!  I'll tell you if it works out or not tonight when we try to connect again.

The other question I have is if HER firewall will prevent her from connecting to ME.  From what I understand- only the host needs to have the open firewall.  Correct?  Thanks for everything!!

Stealth is NOT what you want!!!

You want closed or Open.  The client tries to contact the host via port 47624 so the host needs this port to be forwarded to the hosting computer if a router is involved.

Get rid of the WinXP firewall when playing at least at first until you get it working.

When you have the game running as host you should get an Open reading with the port scan for port 47624.

The client will need ports 2300-2400 to be NOT stealth.

Okay- so here's the update

I can get into Gamespy (Zone doesn't seem to run H3 Complete) now that I've Demilitarized and taken down Windows XP Firewall.  However- I STILL cannot connect with my friend.  So I took it to the next level.  I unplugged my router and put the cable modem straight into my computer.....it still didn't work.  She still couldn't connect.  So whats the deal?  Have I stumped you yet ?!?!?

Can you play a game with someone on Gamespy (Not just get in the room)  Also, does your friend have all the ports clear and can they get into Gamespy and play.

You also need to know each others external IP if you are going to try direct connect.  You can also see that at the grc website.

I'm pretty sure Heros Complete works in the zone.

Okay- for the zone- i get this everytime I enter the game lobby:  "We are not able to detect Heroes of Might and Magic III installed on your hard drive.  Please install the game before matchmaking on the Zone."

For Gamespy: I can get into the game lobbies and talk.....When I try to create a game I get this message:

"Gamespy Arcade has detected that your computer's internal IP address (192.168.1.103) is different than its external IP address (68.34.204.38).  This may be caused by firewalls, a NAT proxies, or other unusual network configuration and may prevent you from hosting a game.  Please see our Firewall Guide for further information You can access it by choosing "Help with Gamespy Arcade" from the Help menu."

I've been able to join a game and played it all the way through (and won!!) and haven't been able to host a game yet.

Sarah (Who I'm trying to connect with) can't even get into the room, it just freezes when she attempts (she's on the University of Georgia dorm line).....

I usually play "direct connect" so I am not overly familiar with the zone, however I was helping a friend of mine troubleshoot a problem and this person has Heros complete and he was able to get into the zone.  However, we were not able to connect and play due to other problems on his end.  Maybe you do need to re-install in order to play in the zone, however that is not the problem you are trying to fix.

I think the problem is at your friends end since it sounds like they are on a massive local network.  Unless she can talk the network people into forwarding a few of the ports ( not sure how many you need but I would guess as low a 2 for a two player game) between the range of 2300-2400, to her local computer, I don't think you will be able to play.  If she can get a few ports directed to her, then she can run a helper progam to force Heros to use the ports she is assigned.

As a last test I would suggest that you remove your router and kill the Winxp firewall and you host the game.  In this situation, I will assume that your computer will have the real internet IP address (probably 68.34.XXX.XXX).  You have your friend try a direct connection to you with your real IP address.  You might luck out with a uPnP breakthru at your friends end.

It also wouldn't hurt for your friend to try playing someone else within her LAN just to verify that her computers TCP is working properly. (That is the problem my friend is having!)

Good Luck.

yeah- we tried connnecting with XP Firewall off and no router.  So it IS her side.  I am having her contact the people that can take down some of those ports- but which ones should I have her ask to be taken down??

That is the port the host uses during intial connection.  The client will contact the host on that port so the host needs that port to be open.  That is why if you are hosting the game thru a router you need to make sure that port is forwarded to your computer. On the clients end, they just need to be able to use that port when connecting.  Most routers would allow that with out any forwarding setup but in her case they may have actually blocked all ports for trafic in either direction except for web and email so if that is the case then she would need to get them to unblock that port as well.

Okay- I had her contact the network people at UGA...they said that she should be able to connect with people through the firewall- that it shouldn't block her from connecting....however- I had her do that check that figured out whether it was in stealth mode or not- and they ARE in stealth mode.....and she can't connect to Zone OR Gamespy.....
