No- and as you suspected earlier, that's all we're TRYING to do.  We were just seeing if she could get on those instead.  She can't direct connect to me with Diablo 2 either....So now we KNOW its not the game itself.  I'm going to retry to host a game today- I'll tell you how that goes...maybe I still am not able to host.

Go to this web site to test if the ports required for DirectX7 games (Heros3) are “Stealth” or not.  This will check if your internet service provider is blocking some ports that you need to connect to games.  Make sure your WinXP fire wall is off before doing this test.

http://grc.com/default.htm

Scroll down to the middle of the page and click on “ShieldsUp”

This should bring you to a page where, at the bottom, you can type in the ports you want to be externally probed.  It only checks 64 ports at a time so you will need to make 2 or 3 runs to check all the ports.  You can use a dash (-) between the port numbers to specify a range of ports (eg: 2300-2350)

For DirectX6 and DirectX7 games you need these ports to be “Open” or “Closed” but not “Stealth”

2300 thru 2400  (Check 2300-2350 and then 2350-2400)

and 47624

To use the MSN Gaming zone and to run newer DirectX8 and DirectX9 games you will also need these ports to be not “Stealth”:

6667

28800-29100  (300 ports to scan so you will need to run at least 5 scans to cover the range)

6073

Other app’s that may be of interest like Kazaa file sharing use ports 1214 and 80

If you use a router, these are the ports you have to add to the port forwarding section and have enabled in order to play thru your router.  You can use this web site to check if your router port forwarding is set properly

You can also configure the WinXP firewall to allow these ports to be open if you want to spend a few hours playing with it!

everything is stealth , how can u get this open or closed now?

Ok so here's a question. How do I find out if I have a WinXP Firewall?

I know I have Norton Security.. I've yet been able to even RUN my Heroes 4 when I'm online. The game starts and I know it's running I can hear the music.. but nothing shows. If I alt+tab I can select the icon but all that happens is the screen goes black for a coupld of seconds then right back to whatever browser window I have open or the desktop whatever was showing when I started the game up.

I just finished configuring Norton Security (before reading another post on this board where I was looking for help I never even used the stupid thing.. it was always disabled). Anyways I just configured it to allow the Heroes program but the game still won't run when I start it up. Same thing.. music plays but I can't get the screen up.

Jinxer..

Just put your computer in the DMZ and then you can open all your ports actually..if u wanna know what ports it uses, jus go ina game, and then go to a dos prompt and type netstat -a and it shows all active connections and which ports they are on. id suggest closing most your other stuff to limit the stuff showing. and maybe do it while the game is idle, while u are sending data, and while receiving. and dont worry about gamespy seein the router address..cause your router jus does port forwarding, it takes the ISP IP and based on the port u are using it forwards that to your private (router IP)

Hmm just seen what DMZ is... it is basially like turning firewall off?  That leaves me un protected.  And when I did test it with Firewall off it still didnt work. Maybe DMZ works different?

What type of router do you have?

Basically DMZ forwards all the ports to a specific IP address. Yes opening all the ports...you can switch it on when playing a game, and off when you done. But DMZ will NOT work if you are forwarding any other ports. For example, if you specifically opened 1 single port and use DMZ at the same time it will not work. You need to make sure no specific ports are open when using the DMZ

I work for upper level support for D-Link technical support, so kinda became an expert on all them home networking devices lol

Theoretically u could manually forward each port.. but generally a router doesnt give enough room to do 100. Your router should have capabilities to forward multiple ports. It jus may be in a different section

Okay- for the zone- i get this everytime I enter the game lobby:  "We are not able to detect Heroes of Might and Magic III installed on your hard drive.  Please install the game before matchmaking on the Zone."

Hi. dunno if this has been already answered.

You could run SETUPREG.EXE from the same directory as your heroes executable file.

2. Close heroes lobby.
3. Rejoin heroes lobby.

Game should be detected, if not, you can...

1. Start the game in single player mode.
2. ALT+TAB out of game (leaving it on the taskbar)
3. re-enter heroes lobby.

If all above fails reboot and return to the heroes lobby, just a registry edit, needs a boot usually but can get away with it if you run game(usually).

Hope this helps.

Cannot route a range of ports!!!

My router is a of ZyXEL Prestige Network Commander (PNC) for Broadband 600 Series Ver 2.35.
But I just can't find any option where I can route a range of ports to some local IP!! In fact, I only find a submenu called SUA Server Setup (Single User Account Server Setup) where I can redirect up to 8 ports only!! Does anybody also use this router and perhaps know the solution???

Thanks in advance!!

I think the problem is at your friends end since it sounds like they are on a massive local network.  Unless she can talk the network people into forwarding a few of the ports ( not sure how many you need but I would guess as low a 2 for a two player game) between the range of 2300-2400, to her local computer, I don't think you will be able to play.  If she can get a few ports directed to her, then she can run a helper progam to force Heros to use the ports she is assigned.

What is the program that can be used for forcing ports?

I did the port test for my computer.. every single port is in stealth mode -laughs-

I've been looking for the XP firewall ( I never used XP until getting this new computer about 6 months ago ) and I've yet to find it so..

I guess I'm just doomed to not play Heroes ( or Diablo 2 for that matter ) online anymore.

I checked that.. ages ago. There's nothing checked to enable to firewall so. I honestly have no idea why the game won't run properly and I'm actually out of patience trying to figure it out.

Thank you for the help anyways..

I uh, think, hope, and believe I got it.

My router had, in its menu, a submenu for UPnP.

When I checked that submenu, it displayed the options.

Mine was set as 'Off'. Possibly default. I put it on 'Full', and will later on try if it can be put in 'Secure' mode.

Well, I tried to reconnect, however it's not Univeral Plug and Play that's used for playing HoMM online. And then I found out my router has a firewall installed. Going to take time to find it though.
