Hi,

- Not sure if this is the right thread I should be posting in. I have recently dug out my H4 just for the fun of it. Are there any updates for this game ? As in something I should have installed ( fan made mod , etc.) ?
Edit Also, where do I ( if thats possible ) play this online. Hamachi,GS ?

@espen15: Well, it's a long story. Here goes:

3DO created this game when they were already in their decline (they were nearly bankrupt). They released the game half-finished and horribly buggy to attempt to get another source of revenue. But...that just explains why 3DO did it.

The main reason H4 is so unpopular is that it's different. Heroes fight in the battlefield alongside troops being the main difference. Troops in the adventure map can also move around without being in a hero's army (but, cannot claim towns or mines). Also, the whole "hero in battlefield" concept was good, but horribly unbalanced. High level heroes could massacre huge stacks of neutral units on their own.

I'll admit that I preferred the simultaneous retaliation system (you attack, I retaliate at the same time.) in H4 to the classic system of H3 (which is the same retaliation system used in H5), but in the end, I ended up just returning to Heroes 3...that is, until Heroes 5 was released.

To its defense, it had quite a few innovative things, like advanced hero classes (classes you could unlock by taking certain skills) for example, but in the end all H4 managed to do was divide the fanbase between people who prefer H3 and those who prefer H4.

Hope that answers your question.

If you're familiar with the H3 luck/morale system, then all you really need to know is that luck effects defense instead of attack, and morale no longer is effected by creature allignments within an army. Otherwise, yeah, a guide would be nice for teh n00bs.

I know this was from a long time ago, but I thought morale is precisely affected by alignment of creatures within the army?

Going to have to ask:  what is the differance between speed, movement, and Adventure movement?  I'm guessing that the AdvMov is how far the unit will walk on the adventure map, but what about speed and movement?  Is Speed equivilant to initiative, and movement the number of spaces a unit can walk on the battlefield?  Or has something gone horribly, horribly wrong and I have no idea about what is going on?

Asking for the purposes of the ICTC competition; I always preferred the way HOMM4 handled its unit ladder over other entries'.

Town Gate Spell

I'm just curious if anyone else has tried using the Town Gate spell in combat. It may be a major glitch in the game, or a massive understated combat option. Typically, when you are in combat, your Adventure Map spells don't appear in your spellbook. I can't test this currently because my computer refuses to play HOMM4 (and as of this morning, HOMM 3! ) but I recall a battle years ago that I stumbled across this.

I had bitten off more than I could chew with a neutral army guarding an artifact and risked losing my army I'd worked so hard to procure. I was going through my spell options and Town Gate was on the page. I assumed if I clicked it a little message box would appear saying that it was an "Adventure Map Only" spell or something to that effect. What DID happen? A little gate appeared above each of my army members' heads (similar to the sanctuary spell) and my screen changed to the adventure map, with my hero and army intact in my nearest town.

Has anyone else tried this? I should mention that I have the original version with no expansions. But man, what a pleasant surprise and option preferable to retreating!

You just now know?

YEs, in vanilla H4 Town Gate works in combat.

I was going to do a whole map based on this mechanic, but it is disabled for Equilibris, and thus for my mod that copies it's programming...

That is to say, this only works on Vainilla H4 and it's expansions, not on Equilibris or Greatest Mod

Sadly that, because, as you noticed it, it has a nice special FX

Town Portal is disabled in Equilibris because its giving the huge advantage to one player in the battle. You can imagine online game when one player attacks another with the intention of hurt him as much as possible and then using town portal to retreat. Therefore this change is a must. The completely other thing is playing only with PC - then you can have thousands of great victories and tons of creattures, spells and arifacts.

Very nice guide lol. Found myself playing some H4 in the weekends now. Have had to explore my own prefered line-ups a bit.

Hmmm.. Haven.. Probably Pikeman/Crusader/Angel... but Haven is soo boring in general. Balistas could be an alternative if they weren't so slow. Catapults would have been preferable to both Angels and Champs.

For Academy I've found myself going either GG/Naga/DG or Mage/Genie/Titan. I found the former rather fun. All three are tough enough and Nagas are excellent damage dealers (in equi, Genies arguably being OP in vanilla). It's also a fun for me to explore, personally, due my general preference for hit-and-run tactics and maxing out shooters.

For Asylum, my favourite, its Medusa/Efreet/Dragon. Though only the first one is kinda set in stone. Mares are kinda useful for the bonus, but not tough enough, in my experience. Hydras are nice as tanks.. not just very useful due being so slow.

Have to say.. though.. would such an option exist, I'd go with Trogs/Eyes/Goblins/MD:s. Actually, in kinda all cases, I've found the TGS/WOW creatures superior to their vanilla counterparts. Except - perhaps - for those weird red crocodiles for Might (due their lame berserk ability -.-).

For Necro, its kinda always Ghost/Spawn/Bone Drakie. With equi. Vamps are OP in Vanilla. Love the Ghost and Spawn abilities. Devils are annoying with teleport but kinda squishy.

For Perserve it's Elf/Unicorn/Phoenix. But mostly for nostalgic reasons (H1/2:s Sorceress town). I kinda like white tigers, but I don't like to see kitties getting hurt or dying. (yeah a snow of a tactical mindset here lol)

Might/Stronghold being something of a favourite alignment as well, I'd say I generally go Harpy/Cyclops/Behemoths, although I've found myself going with Ogres (in equi ofc lol) and Birdies as well. It's just that.. the later.. while being kinda cool, hardly feel like a proper level 4 creature for me. -.-

Regarding magic schools, I have to say the Nature/Order the best combo (though the hero class is rather lame). Chaos is still a favourite of mine, personally. I've found Chaos/Life to be a potentially nice combo, if available. That Hero class bonus is rather nice too (ignores the effects of all Wards).

After beating a majority of the campaigns on advanced and expert (with Equilibris installed), I have ended up with some unpopular unit decisions. I won't discuss tier 1s, as both dwellings are usually bought and most become obsolete late-game.

My main army usually has two heroes. One with magic and combat, the one being with tactics and combat.

Life: Pikemen, Monks and Champions. Reason: The low attack values of Crossbowmen and Ballistae negate their effectiveness late-game. Ballistae are also slow. Champions are easier to acquire due to their cheaper cost, and with Tactics they deal surprising amount of damage.

Death: Ghosts, Vampires and Dragons. Venom Spawns are amazing when defending in a siege - but defending against a siege rarely leads to a victory. Devils are great at assassinating enemy heroes, but the overall combat stats of the Dragons outweight that.

Order: Golems, Genies and Titans. Nothing special here imo. Although I do occasionally take Nagas over Genies.

Chaos: Medusae, Nightmares and Hydras. I highly dislike the Black Dragons' magic immunity, simply due to the fact how many buffs Chaos magic has. Nightmares bring CC and buy time to buff the Hydras. With Tactics, the Hydras aren't even that slow.

Might: Harpies, Cyclops and Behemoths. Harpies help with the early clearing. If I get 3 or more towns, I usually get Ogres in one town and try to go for the Bloodfrenzy.

Nature: Elves, Griffins, Dragons and either Water elementals or Mantises.
