Expanding HC to Other Games

The purpose of this thread is based on the thought of advertisement through association. This is not giving up on Heroes of Might and Magic, but an attempt to broaden the community to attract more players Heroes.

In my experiences with people I know in RL, they rarely have played or even heard of HOMM. This includes many people who often play games like starcraft online. I think that this website should consider adding another forum for discussion of strategy for another computer game specifically more popular. I think it's safe to say that most people who play in TOH/Myths have come here at some point.

If people who play one of the popular online games came to HC, they would find out about HOMM. It would be a discovery. I think this could be a good source for attracting new players to HOMM. If HOMM is associated with with another more popular game, it will rub off and make HOMM more popular. It's kinda like being best friends with the most popular kid in school.

I bring this up, because the newest generation of HOMM fans, Heroes 4, have not posted in the HOMM 4 forum in over a month. The future of HOMM discussion is in jeopardy and is currently being supported by online tournaments and off-topic forums as it's future. The activity is no longer in the strategy discussion.

I wouldn't recommend using games like Starcraft or Command and Conquer, because those games are memorization of building sequences and hotkeys and who can click the mouse the fastest.

I would recommend bringing aboard other turn-based games, like Civil War General, Lords of Magic, Chess, Although this is a contradiction of my original thinking to have more popular games, groups will still attract more attention than individuals and attract realtime-strategy games are not the right candidates for attracting new comers to HOMM, however since HOMM is the ultimate turn based strategy game, I don't think we would be sending off our players, being that 95% of them are hardcore addicts. Plus our addictive online tournaments give something that no other turn-based strategy has.

I simply believe that not enough people know about the game. If they do know about the game, then they do not understand it enough to appreciate it. I did not appreciate this game fully until I started coming to HC and reading all the threads in Library. I think other people would do the same thing.

If two people were given a chess board and rules on how to play, but were given information on concepts of game strategy, do you think they would get bored with the game quickly and move on to something else?

You cannot appreciate the strategy game until you understand the strategy. Bringing other people who play other games will be able to see HOMM and understand all of its strategy making them appreciate the game.

Boy that was strange. Last night on the homepage it said under Lands that the last posted date was August 25. That's weird. But it's still not as active as the Library was just a couple years ago.

Here's just a tiny idea, but why not to make a subforum for Blizzard games- Like Diablo or Warcraft? In my opinion, it should be active.

IMO this idea sucks.

What the members here have incommon is one computer game.. or more like its series.

By bringing in other games to this msg board you take away what unites it.

Im not suprised its red sox who brings this idea up since he obviously doesnt play the game and is just intrested in discussing different things.

But for the most of us this is a board which has heroes3 as its core.

And if you add up lots of other games you take that away.

Because what will happen is that
A) you will need many more mods who is unknown here due to the fact that the new forums will need mods too, and not many of us have that interest in other games or the personal qualities to become a mod.

B) And with all the new mods and forums Valery will have more things to supervise. And as situation is today even if improved he isnt one of the most frequent visitors. So this would basically mean that we will need something like "super mods" or "semi admins" which has bigger influence. Problem is that these semi admins wont know much about the new games or the new mods underneath them.

C) The number of forums will increase in such a rate that some members will find it troublesome. And there will prolly be some tossing between members of different games and this will mean more and more h3/h4 tournament players will find this boring and leave.

D) More forums also means more posts and threads. Which will slow HC down much. I dont know about you but i dont wanna spend several seconds waiting for a msg board to load. And then i have ADSL.. think about the members who has modems...

E) And most important IMO..as mentioned earlier HC will lose its now "personal touch". It will lose its core which is the only thing that ties this msg board members together. I dont wanna lose that and see 5 new warcraft or diablo posts when i log on.

I am interested in discussing HOMM. But I don't play Heroes 4, which is the bulk of strategy discussion. However I often go into the Altar and Map Guild. To say that I do not like to discuss heroes is incorrect.

Secondly, Heroes 3 will still be the core of this website. However this website also has a lot of off-topic discussion sometimes much more than strategy discussion.

I'm not intending to add like 10 other games. I'm talking about 2 or 3 other good turn-based strategy games.

In reponse to your supposed bad side-effects.

A) You will only need 1 more mod for the forum. Heroes will be more popular or as popular as the other games. Putting Warcraft in the site is not intended and would overshadow HOMM.

B) 2, 3 more somewhat active forums will cause all these problems?

C) Again I'm not talking about adding 50 more games.

E) You aren't going to see Warcraft posts constantly. You'll see a couple posts here and there about another turn-based strategy game like Civil War General.

To sum up my proposition, I recommend adding a one or forums for other games. Maybe just start with one forum. This will increase the activity of HC, but will not take the personal side of HC away, nor will Heroes be over-shadowed.

you nice guy, Redsoxfan3
your idea about broadening our HC is definitely a basic matter that ALL of us, HOMM fans, have to think of
thanx for reminding us that

however, do u think just a few subforums are enough?
besides, Sir_Stiven's argument "HC will lose its now "personal touch" " is not an illusion. Dont let some kind of strangers disturbing our beloved
in fact, WE DO HAVE GOT SOME MORE EFFECTIVE AND THOROUGH WAYS THEN

If we do expand to other games, then I would recommend turn-based games. These are the people that would be more interested in HOMM. Those who love turn-based games are more likely to like HOMM.

i dont have the time to counter all your "points" now redsox but let me just explain some things to you.

Lets just play for the idea that we did expand HC to another game and for example warcraft 3 as you suggest.

Then the first problem would be that there already are many established war3 message boards around which would make it almost impossible for HC to fight with them. So just get any war3 players at all here would be a major problem.

But lets say that against all odds we do, HC proves to be a great hit for many of the warcraft3 players so many of them registers here aswell.

Do you seriously believe that just one forum would be enough then? If HC makes it as a war3 board expects atleast 3-4 times more members than HC alrdy got. So do you still seriously think then that one forum would be enough for all these members with one new moderator to supervise em?

Now HC has about 10 different forums, so with a new game here like war3 and all the people coming with it will most likely demand more then one forum do discuss all the aspects of warcraft3.

And then just an increase of 3-4 times of the members is problably the understatement of the year concidering how much bigger fanbase warcraft have over the heroes series.

And you also can expect these many many new members to post. Meaning the activity of both threads and posts will increase very very much. Which will slow HC down and so on...

But that wouldnt be the "biggest loss" to me, i would find it worser to see that HC expands to other games aswell since it then would IMO lose its soul.

Both sides have good points. I see it possible only to expand into related games, such as AOWII for example, and only on the condition that the game that we are expanding into is played by many HC members.

Thank you for the QP.

Yes Age of Wonders would be exactly the game that would help HC. Similar games that would attract easy converts to HOMM discussion or HOMM tournaments was exactly what I meant. Warcraft gamers wouldn't be very interested in HOMM.

Lords of Magic: Special Edition is another similar game. It's a turn-based war strategy game very similar to HOMM4 with 3 types of champions instead of the 1 type of hero.

If there are people who play these games already in HC, then it would have at least minimal activity.

But if we get any other games, I think we should have some connections like Map Guild. Web connections would bring members from other sites interested in Age of Wonders to HC. They would see HOMM discussion as well as our community atmosphere and off-topic forums. I bet most of these people would be interested in HOMM and would probably try it at the least.

Are there many enough players (in related-games) to compensate for our efforts running the forums?
I think that almost turn-based strategy gamers are now in our HC ALREADY
however we dont know it clearly if we dont try

With the current events of Ubisoft. I have come to realize that the best game to add to HC will be Heroes 5.

If this game is a big hit, there will obviously be no need for adding more games to HC.

Obviously... Val added Lands of Axeoth when H4 came out, but it's not popular, so he'll have to ad H5 when it comes out, whether it's popular or not.

Also, I think we should divide the library into three forums. One, for H1, two, for H2, and the third, for H3.

Sir Steven, there's one way to keep the suggested forum from becoming overcrowded...

If you consider to expand this community to other PC games, I would strongly suggest games that have the same oriented fabtasy story. All here at HC are used to this. And the ideea to let other TBS in it is quite good, but I don't know exactly how many guys here play them. I would certainly like a Disciples 2 thread...

Hey..This would be really good.. You know if not for other styles of games at least for TBS...I've played for example at least 5 TBS( won't be naming them right now)... Then again this is not the only thing I play... But since now if we will to make this hop... We will make it a little shorter... If everything goes well... then why not go for the other games...

We probably shoul put to a vote. One vote per member( the vote shouldn't be accesible to guests)
