Love
As I have mentioned somewhere among the lines in HC, this summers I read the Kushiel trilogy by Jacqueline Carey. JFYI, it's a fantasy series about a courtesan with formidable intellent, exclusive spying and survival abilities and a liking for the sharper edge of love.
What struck me, though, was the philosophy of life they had. The philosophy of love. Whatever they did... they did it out of love. Even the opponent of the protagonist, the 'bad she villian' explained that all her actions throughout her life, were guided by one thing: love. The love of the dangerous political game she played, of surviving and outsmarting or love of her child.
And that made a whole lot of damn sense to me.
Just a month ago I wrote a story where the character was listening to some very serious (and grounded) accusations of her actions. She used very few words to defend herself. And yet, I believe I'll never forget these words.
Just last night, while RPing, I had a scene that made me cry with real tears as the same words were being mentioned and offered as explaination and only defense.
These exactly words I want to quote here. Forget they are from the Bible (Corinthians 13). Forget they were said by a person considered holy. I read these words again and again, and every time I think I could feel them deeper and deeper and yet, their true depth yet seems to escape me. I want to share them with you.
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or aclanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I have read the first two books of that trilogy and am waiting for the third, Kushiel's Avatar, to come out in paperback.
One of the things I noticed in the second book was one of the characters said that while most of there actions stem out of love they forget that it can be a double edged sword and don't seem concerned for the consequences of there actions.
