The Governor Will take care of the LA Fires

The governor is taking care of it as we speak -- he will terminate the flames.

What if it spread all over the western lands? it could happen! ALl the trees, houses, buildings, all of it destroyed by natrual fire.

We need to be more prepared for this type of thing.

2nd.. jokes are fine and everything but I can make alot of jokes about real people who think the political skill is defined by the polititians past. Even, make political comics I could..

You guys have it all wrong, Arnold is just one man, he wont put out the fires by himself.

He'll simply get a group of futuristic machine fire fighters to do it.

Seriously though, I'm working about 60 miles from the nearest fire, and outside it is just GREY from all the ash in the air.  Our cars are covered with it this far away.

Getting home from Arizona this weekend was an adventure... and not a particularly fun one, we saw 3 small fires (maybe just backfires set by the fire Dept.), and one very large fire on the 1 road that was open after detouring for hours around them.

Well, the difference is really how you measure it.

In area covered, I am almost positive this would be larger than the Chicago Fire.  It is well over 500,000 acres and burning.

In other terms, loss of life, and loss of structure... I think Chicago has us beat.

As for a flood, that brings up a dumb question I can't get out of my head.

Does this qualify as a natural disaster?

A tornado, earthquake, or hurricane certainly is one... but these are mostly Arson.  So if it was done by man, is it still a natural disaster?

If it is one, it will be in the tens of billions of dollars worth of damage, higher than most earthquakes register.

I don't really know why they make such a big deal about those fires, Sydney, Australia seems to have bushfires every couple of years. Canberra had bushfires last summer.

Yes yes, I'm sure great floods, fires, earthquakes happen all the time in Australia and they call it "a light rain".

Headlines may read 500,000 acres burned, 1 dead kangaroo that had a limp... and 1 guy lost an outhouse.

This isn't anything remotely similar to a fire in the middle of the outback.   We're talking 16 people now dead (mainly stupid people who didn't leave when told to by police, but dead none the less).

We're also talking a population in excess of 10,000,000 people covered in ASH, breathing it all day.  Can you even imagine that 30,000 houses are in danger right this moment of being burned to the ground, ruining peoples entire lives.

Estimated monetary damage is already in excess of 2 billion, with fires likely to still be burning houses more than a week from now.

Don't call it "no big deal" eh?

its my understanding bush already decided to call this a natural disaster. (i think i saw that on the news)

and did you know you can see the fire in space? neat isnt it. but here in canada we lose much more land then that a year to forest fires, but we have no one living up north so no one cares.

in manitoba in 1994 we lost 1,428,754 hectares of land to forest fires.

in 1989 we lost 3.6 million hectares

note 1 hectare = 10,000m^2
note 1 acre = 4,046.85642m^2
so 1 hectare is about 2.5 times as big

so in 1989 we lost 8.9ish million acres
info here
more here
edit: hectares not acres

Thought I'd update based on more current figures...

Sadly, the first Fire fighter has died.  The ones that died ignoring mandatory evacuation orders are one thing, but some guy trying to save a strangers house, as in this instance, is sad.

Two other firefighters were wounded.

The death toll stands at 20 right now.

Latest I saw was at least 2400 houses, and well over 600,000 acres burned.

Turns out one of the fires at 350k acres is offically the worst fire acre wise in california since 1936.... and that is just one of them.

Ok, so the terrorists (if it was them) messed up some houses and everything.

Bottom line is we have to redo alot of things.
Theres 2 pluses to this
1: We can redo it anyway we want to (new modern standards)
2: Horiculturalists "hack and burn" fields when they want nutrients returned to the soil, cuz stuff will grow almost like its a new field. Its like they fertilized our lands in a good way

Well actually places in America are extremly flamible.  For Example: In city limits You can't burn wood unless it is in your fireplace.  If you feel like BBQing you must have carcole.  Also in the forests you can't cut down trees that are within a certain distacnce from a road, waterway or something else.  So when fires do happen, all those dead trees burn and the fires gets bigger.
