Is that R.A. Salvatore? I heard he sucks...

Btw, if you want my advice on fantasy, stay away from Terry Goodkind!
Personally, I intend to burn every book he's written that I own, just as soon as he's finished his horrible Sword of Truth series...

Why finish the book?  Burn it now!

I know I should, and I don't really wanna keep putting money into that ******** pockets anymore, but now that I've started reading the filth, I feel that I have to finish it... And he has said that he'll only write two more books...

Death gate is great....haplo is one of my favorite characters in any book....

Robin Hobb yes...though she let herself down wiith the last 2 books of the tawny man, didnt have the zest of the others.

G.R.R. Martin...great stuff, intriguing political fantasy.

Jordan....lots the plot with the last few books. Crossroads of Twilight is very weak.

I fully Recommend anything by Katharine Kerr, a very underrated fantasy writer, likes to write with a welsh/gaelic kind of setting. Rhodry Maelwaedd is a very well developed and likeable character

Finally somebody who appriciates the true magic of the Death Gate Cycle. I like Alfred best.

Please don't tell me the last Tawny Man books are bad... I had really high hopes for them
Oh well, I'll read anyway.

Not bad, no not at all, there is some intriguing stuff in there, a couple of things tied together really nicely. I just couldnt help but think that they were rushed. Still, the books are good and I still enjoyed them...itsjust hard to stack them up against the assassin books, or the liveship books which were magnificent.

As for Alfred, I just kept thinking to myself..."will you hurry up and turn into the dragon already!"

Almost all books above are great in their own ways. I haven't read them all but what I haven't read a friend of mine has read and since he reads more than me I take his word that they are good.

So instead of praising everyone for their good tastes I'm gonna take a cheap shot at the one author I didn't like because that's easier

Tad williams, his trilogy starting with The Dragonbone Chair. Some think it's great, but I was greatly disappointed in it and unless I run out of things to read I very much doubt I will read anything by him again. Some have enjoyed it alot, but I really disliked Simon and when you dislike the main character it's hard to like a book. And you have to take into consideration that I like Thomas Covenant, Raistlin and Alfred who are whiny, at times evil or chicken so at least one other person will dislike Simon so just to be safe you should start with some other books in this thread unless you have no other choice.

And just to name something that hasn't been mentioned yet I remember a book named Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly that I read when I was younger. I haven't read it for over 10 years so it probably isn't as good as I remember but when I read it back then I enjoyed it immensely. When searching for it now on google it seems she wrote some sequels to it just recently really so I guess I'm gonna see if I can find them around here.

Have I mentioned that I strongly recommend Neil Gaiman? I've only read his American Gods, and some of his Sandman comics, but he is imo one of the best sci-fi/fantasy (it's hard to put him in a booth; he's so varied) authors I've read in quite some time.

I also recommend China Mieville. Again, I've not read much of him, but I read this short story of his, An End To Hunger (which you btw can read here, it's about six pages long or so...), which was great, and I have great hopes in his "Perdido Street Station" and "The Scar", books I've heard a lot of good stuff about.

As for Hobb's last two Tawny books: I thought they were great; some of the best I've read, actually. It ended sweeter than the Farseer, and it was more "compact" than the Liveship; where the Liveship often left you just as things were getting exciting in one POV, Tawny let you stay with the same character all the way. Also, FitzChivalry Farseer has got to be one of the best fantasy characters ever concieved, imo, but this could just be cos he has six whole books where he has the 1st person POV all to himself...
