How do you manage to play on Champion level ?

I`m wondering how do you play on the champion level. Right now, I`m trying playing the Mysterio campaign on the level slightly lower than champion (expert maybe or else ... ?), but failed miserably. Each time, I just wandering back and go without doing nothing due to large neutral stack. Sometimes up to month 2 with just a few skirmishes.

On the second map, they are even worse. And, with powerful enemies, there`s nothing I can do. I managed to conquer one city but then 4 enemies attacked me. One with 2 black dragon and so on; at last I won. But then, the second stack with two heroes came with 5 BDs, 2ESs, 10 nightmares, 40 medussas, and hundreds of bandits and orcs. I quit by gating (towngate) to my first city. I have only 29 genies, 7 mages, and about 100 of each halflings and dwarves. I don`t know about the third and fourth stack. Mysterio is level 17 battle mage with Master Order magic.

I have played every campign in original and GS on lower diffculty. Any idea or tips for me to play? Otherwise, I`ll just succumb to the higher level. I just hope, I can play on level higher than average.

Thanks in advance. Sorry if, this question has been asked hundreds of times.

I should have made saved games on all the different scenarios .

All I can really say is "It is possible".  I have beaten, recently, all 5 Winds of War campaigns on Impossible difficulty.

A lot of it was hit and run, whittling down stacks that were way too large for me by attacking with just the heroes and retreating a few times.

One of the tricks I'd use would be to slow stacks, and shoot arrows at them.  When they got close, I'd teleport them away and repeat until I was out of arrows.  Depending on how much combat you've gotten, you can do a lot of damage that way.

i tried playing the GS final campaing on impossible, it was littteraly impossible, i had 5 level 30+ heroes and i couldnt even kill the first stack of units, (100+ those ice guys (ive only seen a few times before that) and some 30-40 wizard guys that can use implosion) needless to say its very difficult. then again i refuse to lose heroes and my archmage doesnt have combat skills (no resistance no combat) so he dies first round every battle.

hehe, now I want to buy GS just for the challenge...

So far, the only campaign I haven't beaten on Champion is Might from the original.  I tried for about 2 days, and gave up... since then I've learned a lot of tricks, and may possibly try again someday, but probably not

I pick the gargantuan path in the GS campaign. All you need are mass slow, forgetfullness, and divine intervention. Dogwoggle can easily take care of them.

100 ice demons + 40 evil sorceresses in GS final campaign is quite doable. just keep berserking the sorceresses so that they kill off ice demons or eachother. or use magic resistant dogwoggle. if under vampiric touch, this guy just wont die.

I think that the real problem with this campaign is that you get a lot of morale penalties inthe final campaigns. That is, if you do not separate your heroes. But of course you can separate them if you want to, the last maps are so easy that any 2 heroes can beat them themselves, maybe someone can even travel alone so you finish the map very fast. But what's the fun in that?

I rarely play on the Champion difficulty. Intermediate was good for me when I was playing WoW campaigns, they're pretty hard anyway, comparing to normal HoMM an GS campaigns.

feelgood76, I have had the same question as you.
Now I easily win against champion. Try out as many tactics as you could think of.

Still trying

Honestly, I`ve tried but failed. Now playing dogwoggle back on champion. It`s to do hit and run because he has no town at first. With no money, weak heroes and large neutral enemies... huh.. died...

But, it looks like the enemy is also having a hard time because of large neutral enemies.. The only game I can play on champion is agraneyl (forgot the spelling) because of the GM stealth ability.

I`ll read more in this forum to learn. Thanks everyone for replying.

I thought of an idea. If you can't beat champion in campaigns, try challenging him in scenarios. First one on one, than one against two etc.
Honestly, this is one part of tactics I thought of when I learned HoMM4.

I can guarantee all H4, TGS and WOW campaigns are doable on champion, though the barbarian missions tend to be very hard and might require some luck (or numerous restarts) to complete. As long as you realize that Combat and its subskills (especially Melee and Resistance) are far more powerful than anything else, and that you can and should use potions of immortality whenever you can, you shouldn't have many problems.

Btw., it seems to me you are not training your heroes properly. Level 30+ is VERY LOW for the last TGS campaign - I had all my heroes at level 37 or higher.

In champpion game you should hire an lord class hero ass soon ass possible becoss the starting money is so poor.

In batle I use the hit and run tactic too. Try to do ass much damage you can. One good spell is quick sand You can block your attackers totally!

And with shooters use the confusion spell.

You can allso try to fool the computer with flying cratures by teasing them a litlle. Fly around the battlefield close to them, but not too close. This gives you more time to do damage while enemy is chasing your troops.

Playing on the champpions level is very fustrating tough, allmost every batlle is a loss at first and it takes time. I mean herous is very slow game and playing on champpion it gets twice as slow. But then again after you beat an immpossible fight that has taken 3 houers you do feel like a chammpion!

Actually, i find the champion level quite easy to proceed o_O With the neutral stacks it's just a matter of choosing the quantity of targets in your army correctly So that some things will split up and some won't. Then, you should calculate if you're capable doing the desired amount of direct damage while repulsing/song-of-peace'ing/berserking the foes - if yes, go with it, if no, then use create illusion/phantom image to create an army of your own. If you have two advanced spellcasters that is... if not, then a few units with one or two Djinni in each will do the job of keeping enemies away pretty fine.

As it turns out, it is often easier for a much smaller army to deal with a neutral stack, than for a larger one...

Yap, I almost agree with pepak. You may reload a game many times to complete. Each campaign requires a special skills to start with.

I think Campaign 2 in H4 classic is the toughness one when playing on champion. Your tactic is very important to finish the first stage of this campaign.

I agree taht it is difficult to take on Champion difficulty, but it is quite doable. I (usually) just get a town, and wait until I can produce 3rd lvl. creatures, then the game is won. Of course I need to see if my enemies are weak enough. The only army that doesent need shooters is the undeads, they have the almighty VAMPIRE. (With vampire growth in the city and grandmaster necromancy ANY army is eventually doable. But this is one of the greatest weaknesses of HOMM IV, This unbalance makes it impossible to combat dead armys in multiplayermode).
So my trick is to get a town and a stonemine and a wood(mine?), then only use money to build what i need to get the third lvl creatures. Meanwhile the Hero can walk around gathering resources and if encountering weak enogh armies get rid of them
