Get a town? Have u tried Campaign 2 (H4 original - champion mode), can u describe your way to the first town. I asked u that because Campaign 2 is the one I like best.

This unbalance makes it impossible to combat dead armys in multiplayermode.

I'm not sure about that. U will fight hard with an Order force when opponent hero knows Teleport. Genies can cast Slow and Create Illusions on your Vampire force. In that case, all that u can do is wait and see ur casualties.

I have tried but can,t make either.
Sorry I was a bit too over confident there.

Knug: A good player should be able to win almost any combat with a hero alone. No need to bother with creatures, except in really rare cases.

As for multiplayer against Vampires, just get two or three level 10 Barbarians (GM Combat, GM Melee, E Resistance) and you will kill your opponent through hit-and-run quite easily. Getting the barbarians will be much faster than getting GM Necromancy and enough Vampires, too.

I don't like Champion level so much because at start you have to be in castle so long. Your heroes are usually too weak to fight and computer has super armies. You'll have to wait that your armies grow. If an enemy tries to attack my castle I usually soften it with my hero and then defend in my castle. And if I attack I attack with my whole armies. Hit and run tactics are useful too if you have hero/heroes powerful enough. I won't use that so much if the computer is far away because it takes so much time. Time is money in this game.

This is actually the biggest mistake you can do on Champion. You must scout and take/flag everything you can as quickly as you can humanly accomplish it (and that's often a lot quicker than you think).

I've beaten all the H4 and WoW Campaigns on Champion, and it didn't take me more than perhaps a few days longer than doing the same on say Expert level.

The first Map in a scenario will often (but not always) take a bit longer but after that, if you play your cards well, there will be a negligable delay. And then I also played with an additional "No Reload" rule (only allowed if computer scripts becomes messed up and fails to realise that I've already eliminated player X.)

Also, as for the "Ungodly Computer strength".  In the vast majority of the champion maps I've played, the neutral stacks were MUCH more of a problem.

In fact, in single maps, it is often a let down that the enemy never was able to get past his neutral armies, and has been sitting waiting for you to get to him and slaughter him.

In campaigns it usually isn't that bad, because the computer is given a lot of units etc.

Edit:  Because I didn't re-read the thread and repeated a few things from previous posts.

I found that the first maps of all champion campaigns (H4 classic & TGS) are always difficult. At this time, your hero is weak. But the longer u stay in town, the more difficult u meet in the rest of the map. When my heroes (usually 2) are strong enough, I buy a large number of artifacts (healing, strength, toughness, MR and Immo - depend to the map and money) and rarely bother my creatues.

I don't wanna play H4 at other mode since I started to play at champion. Non-champion mode, your hero(es) is so strong to neutral creatures, u just go & wash...

A small tip when playing at champion mode: just think "finally I win".

True. The real question is, however, why whould anyone want to stay in town? I know most fights seem impossible, with a lowly hero, no artifact and few troops, but with a correct tactics (and exploitation of AI deficiencies) a player can beat MUCH bigger armies...

This usually happen to those who just begin their champion modes.
The first time I tried Camp 2 of H4 original, I lost in any battle. So I applied strategy "wait for strength". For months (in-game time), my army was strong but I realized I could never finish the map in that way. After that, I tried this camp again and again with many different tactics and won easily. That's a sad but value expierience to me.
I wanna write alot about that strategy but now noone cares for the Might campaign in H4 original.

I agree that the Might campaign in H4 original is very hard on champion difficulty. The large stacks of monsters, and the no-town start is a big problem. I can't remember if the town had a tavern once you capture it, but I think it had not one, so only one (and still low level) hero is a problem too.

Another campaign with a hard start on champion was A Matter of Life and Death in TGS. Again you do not have an easy access to a town. Actually I could not conquer the town that was next to my starting point. Instead, after numerous very hard battles I managed to get a town deep into the enemy teritory. The enemy is not a problem, though :-)

BTW, this is my first post in this forum ;-) I am a great fan of the heroes series and I'm looking forward for interesting discussions ....

Plenty of tactics that are usually effective against beefy CPU opponents have already been mentioned, but there's always the X-factor of the enemy hero getting good morale and then using Hand of Death on your one hero who can use Divine Intervention (Or something to that effect).

Until Hero combat potential, Spell potential, and Army influence are ballanced- even the perfect strategy will be beatable with a small stroke of luck.

*On a side note, shouldn't we be able to execute captured enemy heroes? Then maybe they can be brought back only as

(A)A spectral version of themself (personality intact)
(B)An undead version of themself (Zombie/Vampire etc. personality before change lost)
(C)Grandmaster ressurected at a town after their body is recovered.

*Something to consider for HOMM V

playing champion lvl sucks...

I managed to play some stand alone maps in impossible,
usually big maps that give you time to develop your town
and hero.

The game is usually kind of frustrating. the first two month
you can actully do nothing. untill lvl creature appear
in your town.

also you need a lot of luck...artifacts and the type of
the wondering stacks guerding on your mines.

Sometimes after you manage to break through the wondering stacks... you find the dumb AI in a bad shape since he
couldn't get through too.

I think the homm3 was better in this aspect

Dyrvom, the things are not so easy since the heroes usually come with immortality cast on them ;-) You must kill the grandmaster of life twice ....

And this is an answer for the previous posts about the Original HOMM4 Campaign #2 (Might):
I am currently playing it on Champion and I am now on map 4. Of course map 1 is the hardest. Here are some tips how I started (they include reloading but, hey ...):

-I restarted several times until the adventurer's skeleton guarded by the moving skeletons gave me an elven chain mail (you can steal it when the skeletons move up)
-Killed the centaurs guarding the second centaur dwelling
(lost more than 10 and less than 20 berserkers, can't remember how much exactly).
Against these and the next centaurs I used the following tactics:
Hero in the middle front, berserkers behind him, all centaurs in a stack, and 4 stacks with one centaur each, cube formation. This way berserkers cannot go forth immediately. The enemy sentaurs shot at the hero. In the first battle I didn't and on the second I did sacrifice my single centaurs on their last shots (the last shots are much more powerful) and released the berserkers.
Note: If the enemy groups can kill a single centaur with a single shot, this means that you have waited too long to attack them.

-Killed the other centaurs that guard a treasure chest with similar tactics (this is the second battle mentioned before).

-Note that Waerjak must raise ONLY Combat. MR and Melee after GM combat. If combat does not appear when levelling up, then reload.

-Killed the orcs with no casualties: Only the hero and the centaurs in one stack behind him went into battle, waited until they depleted their shots, and then defended with the hero while my centaurs shot from behind with a straight arrow 4 times. Got a potion of healing.

-Next went for the pirates (1st and 2nd stack across the sea). Used the potion of healing in the second battle. I think that my hero was with master combat at that time.

-After you kill them everything becomes easy :-)

...
Do not forget to get all boosters and visit all towns for +3att/+3def with Waerjak. Including the enemy towns - wait for their heroes to go out before capturing the last town. Get the bonusses and then kill the heroes.
...

Things that I found extremely useful on map 2 and 3 were:
Map 2 - hideous mask, scroll of forgetfulness - got lucky in a Mages tower for the second;
Map 3 - Halberd of Swiftwatch (in the up-right corner of the map).
