The assassin queen began to follow the others, but soon stopped and turned back to watch her brother lie helplessly as Motherdark revealed her power in this form. She turned and slowly continued on toward the magi, wondering how she and her son could topple so powerful an entity. A half-bred Forsaken One and a mortal could stand no real chance against her, especially since both of their borrowed powers were near useless against her. Alivia longed to stay and fight for Ba'althinor, but she longed to see her son again more. She found within her the impulse to move on ahead.

Suddenly, she heard behind her an epic struggle, and turned to face what was now a situation favoring her brother. Alivia watched as her renewed brother held their mother in place, strangling her with vines. Her eyes lit up as she realized she and Shadowcaster were not the only ones out to destroy Motherdark, and her other children bore powers that could topple her off of the pedestal upon which she had placed herself. Perhaps they would loan them similar powers to aid in the struggle. Or better still, those powers could remain indefinitely.

On that day, Alivia began to look up to her big brother of sorts, the one who had first mounted the courage to attack Motherdark in an attempt to sluff off the over-restrictive authority she held over her children. She would never view him the same again, though her other siblings shared a distaste for the elementalists.

However, "Mother" had not let up yet, and retaliated as her son taunted her from out of reach. The vines snapped like threads as she stood and mounted the charge against the elementalist. Alivia was afraid that her brother would be overcome, but Ba'althinor waved her away as she advanced to help him. He had not yet played his trump card. The elementalist raised his arms toward the charging beast and began to weave a devastating spell, releasing it upon the dragon as the magic ran its course. Motherdark could not react quickly enough to her son's spell and fell to the ground in a massive cloud of dust, her form returning to that which enveloped her. No single trace of the dragon's body remained, and only a mound of charred ash stood where She had once been. Ba'althinor had won.

Alivia cautiously stepped to her brother's side and congratulated him on his victory, saying he beat her to it. The elementalist looked over at her and simply said, "I need some time to myself. Tell the others that mother is dead, and be sure to let them know at whose hand she fell. I will return soon." He walked into the woods and disappeared between the trees.

But Alivia could not do what he had said, despite her newfound respect for him. She had to find her son again, as it was unclear what now lay ahead for the Forsaken Ones. The assassin queen feared for her mortal son, who remained locked in a struggle for power between immortal backstabbers. The shadow mage was never to become one of them, and he was only a threat to his brothers and sisters because of his power to blind them. The rest hinged on his borrowed powers, and she began to wonder whether or not those would do anything to the Forsaken Ones. Only time would tell. She headed toward the Ancient City.

As she left, the forgotten ashes left unaltered in the clearing began to reform.

Urgh, Deimos was really starting to annoy me. I think he's now started making stupid comments as some sort of humor that only he gets.
Stupid tiny demon.
I was giving serious thought to eating him, only the taste might put me off.

I had also noticed the little flirtation scene between Kaylianna and MM. I'd once hoped there might have been a bit of that between Dervol and I, but she had changed too much from the girl I'd admired at the Academy, and her recent imprisonment at the hands of Illyria had left her scarred inside.

Not being able to communicate without hurting everyone was also starting to fray on my patience. Dragons were magical creatures, but as yet I hadn't found a spell I could cast while in this form, but I'd keep trying.

Maybe I'll find a way to............

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Just before he blacked out from the pain, Dean had a last glimpse of everyone in the camp rolling on the ground and writhing in pain........then there was just ash settling on the ground........

*when I saw the dragon start to flail in mid-air my eyes widened. Pushing MM and Kaylianna out of the way I ran to where the other's were rolling around on the ground clutching their heads. Too true I could also hear the defening boom rattle my brain, however, I wasn't going to be fazed or bothered by it while mortal lives where in danger. Flying as fast as the dragon was falling I shoved the other's out of the way before the gigantic carcass fell with a loud thundering boom in the forest*

Deimos: What the heck just happened?! Why'd he try to kill us?

MM: I feel that he has been....knocked out from a tremendous amount of pain. I wonder what could cause such a thing though?

Gorman: With the noise that great lout caused the Forsaken Ones will quickly find us...we must do something with him, but what?

The ashes of the former dragon were lain in a heap  beginning to scatter in the wind about the open plains. The sky grew dark and the wind began to pick up. Large thunderous clouds formed in the sky. The wind picked up further until several lightning bolts hit the ground about the pile of ashes.

A tiny spout formed in the clouds directly atop the carcass of ash. It grew and grew until it was a twister that gobbled up all in it's path. It began with the ashes of the dragon making the tornado an opaque black. The tornado slowly became translucent and a black humanoid figure appeared in it's middle. Motherdark had risen from the ashes floating hundreds of yards above riding a twister like one would ride a horse or a griffin.

The storm calmed almost instantly and Motherdark floated slowly down never quite touching the ground. She let out a call as she oscillated up and down just a few inches above the ground. With a blinding deep purple flash, a demonic beast with wings of sorts appeared before her. Mounting the beast, she took off up into the now clear skies. Looking out into the distance she saw the figure of Alivia. Motherdark pursued her daughter who was most obviously headed to meet her son, Shadowcaster.

Motherdark had intentionally let Ba'alithnor go,  knowing another battle would result just as before. That spell was something that She knew She could not counter. Though She knew She would not be killed by Her son, She knew the battle would end quickly. For once, Motherdark would have to brush up on her skills.

Elsewhere...

The Royal Order Of Supreme Magi

Here in Avalonia, the bitter cold land of magic, we come across the bustling town of Elandrake.  Nearly everyone has been here or at least heard of this town.  The reason?  It is home to the main headquarters of The Royal Order Of Supreme Magi.  Many consider them to be a magical police unit but the truth of the matter is that they are in fact peacekeepers.  It is known that they use their extensive magical abilities to locate any trouble spots and resolve the problems.  Hunderds of magi go in and out daily on missions such as this but only those that have proven their worth to the head council.  It's said that the circle of mountains where the Royal Order is located was once the sight of a magical endeavor of some sort.  It is here where stories of the past become ledgends.
Approaching the large doors is a young man of about 18.  He is well built but unfourtianatly bald from an accident a couple of years back.  He is none other than Lance Douglas of the house of Gryphon.  He is son to Lord Ivo Gryphon, world renowned Dragon slayer and Gaurdian of some magical rock.  Awaiting Lance is a large ogre by the name of Grutox.  They had met two years ago when Lance had discovered he posessed magical talents.  His father hated magic.  He thought it a useless waste of time and talent.  He remained true to the role of a gaurdian though due to the fact that it gained him respect and power.  Lance knew it was his duty to take over after his father since he was the first born but only thought of the gaurdianship as a political position.  Taking off in the middle of the night, Lance grabbed the case holding the crystal and traveled east to the Eternal Mountains.  Looming above them stood one of the most magnificent buildings he had ever seen.  Before continuing on he pulled the case out of his sack and opened it up.  That was it!?  His father was training him to babysit a rock?  There was nothing much to it.  It looked similar to most other crystals only this felt heavier and was clear...or at least it was.  As he held it, the crystal slowly changed to a dull blue color and than back to clear.  Taking a closer look, Lance could see what appeared to be a whirlwind swirling about inside.  It was small but sure enough it was there.  He decided to hang onto it after all and placed the crystal in his pocket.
Walking forward more he saw an older looking fellow, only this man was green.  Grutox.  An old friend of his.  He had agreed to meet Lance here.  He had told him there were far greater things in store for his future.
Years later Lance became a forgotten name as most referred to him as the Mighty Mage.  Mostely out of fear due to his somtimes careless tendicies.  A rumor floated about that he had been the cause of the fire in the west wing.  Grutox had passed away but not before giving the approval for Lance to train under the mages of the Royal Order.  That did not last though as it soon became apparent that he posessed the Zypher's Emerald.  The Council called him directly and asked to speak with him.  As it turned out they wished to train him directly in both gaurdianship and his magery which at the time was rather crude black magic.  Most offensive magi trained with black magic when they began because of it's raw power and simple elemental spells.  Mighty Mage as he was called now was quite fond of fire magic which became apparent to the council leaders.  They decided that instead of taking a direct black magic route he should instead study under red magic.  This was actually a mix of white and black magic and meant for those who were equally strong physically.
As the years passed Mighty Mage became more in-tune with his skills and mastered Red Magic.  It was time to move on.  He was skilled with elemental magic and so that was his destiny, to become an Elementalist.  He passed his exams and became an offical member of the Royal Order.  Now he was eligible for missions.
As Mighty Mage took off for his first adventure, a simple peace treaty somwhere south, a mage carring a box that looked familiar headed into the tower...the tower...THE TOWER!

Mighty Mage:  Oh god...

Of course that's where they'll go.  Why wouldn't they?  We are just minor obstacles.  They'll head for the Royal Order and destroy it.  Dean is...incapasitated, It's up to me.  We have to hurry and find my damned crystal.  It's our only hope now.

Vadskye:  Have a nice nap?  What?

Mighty Mage:  We have to go.  We have less time than we thought.  If they destroy the Tower than there's nothing to protect the Master Emerald.  If that's gone than our mission is over.  Get the others and let's move.  We have to get out of this forest and head north to the border of New Mahogany.  The Storm carring the Zypher's Emerald is located in that area.

Vadskye:  Wait...storm?  How big of a storm?

Gorman:  Probably monster big.  These two were telling me about the mountain you guys pulled the Earth crystal out of.  According to this map...that mountain was never there.  That rock probably created it.

Vadskye:  Of course.  Just like the oasis where we found the Water Saphire.  Each Crystal is creating an elemental base for itself.  Thank the gods we have the Flaming Ruby.  I could just imagine what that would have been like.

We packed up our things in a hurry and headed deeper into the forrest.  A bit longer and we would be out.  Chief Jub siad his goodbyes...I think, and headed off into the weeds and trees.

Hans raised his axe. His mom called him from their shabby straw hut.
Mom: Hans! You're taking forever to chop those logs! Hurry up!
Hans: I'm not taking forever! I'm chopping!
Mom: Well, chop faster! Lord Mayvin is going to be here tomorrow and I want everything looking neat! Including yourself!
Hans: Okay, okay...
Mom: WHAT DID YOU SAY?
Hans: Yes, ma'am.
Hans raised his axe, and suddenly felt a surge of anger. Anger and... power. He brought the axe heavily down upon the logs. His axe cut through the logs like butter, and was stuck in the ground.
Mom: Hans! You're getting the axe dirty!
Hans: Yes, ma'am.
Mom: HANS! DON'T JUST STAND THERE, GET IT OUT!
Hans pulled at the axe, and it came out easily. His mom looked impressed.
Mom: How did you pull it out? It was in so deeply.
Hans: With strength.
Mom: NOW, DON'T YOU CHEEK ME, YOUNG HANS! YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO!
Hans continued chopping.

Hans never knew his father. All he heard from his mother was, "He was a strong man, and you shouldn't be ashamed of yourself."

The next day, Lord Valc Mayvin, his younger brother Immil Mayvin, and his baby niece Angelica Mayvin came to town from Mayvin Castle. Hans watched their rich white horses snort as they stood in the crowded town square. Lord Mayvin was making a speech.
Valc: A good citizen is a man respected by his comrades, a hard worker, and a good listener. I'm sure you all are good citizens, aren't you?
There was laughter.
Valc: A good citizen respects their country, and is willing to fight for it. Just like all of us!!!
There was ear-deafening cheering. Hans's mom bustled over to Hans.
Mom: Hans, we have to get home. Lord Mayvin is going to a short dinner with each individual family!
Hans: I'm so excited.
Mom: DON'T CHEEK ME! AND BE ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR WITH LORD MAYVIN AND LADY MAYVIN!
Hans: The kid?
Mom: She is the heir's heir!

A few hours later, Lord Mayvin, carrying his niece Angelica, entered Hans's hut.
Valc: I'm hungry! It smells good...
Mom: Welcome to our humble abode, Lord Mayvin and baby Angelica! I've made broth! By the way, my name's Alla and this is my son, Hans.
Hans: Welcome, my lord.
Valc: What are we wating for? Let's eat!
They sat down to eat. Hans's mom set down a bowl of broth in front of Valc. He tasted it.
Valc: Tasted delicious.
Mom: Thank you, my lord.
Valc: So, how is life?
Mom: Good. Thank you for asking.
Hans: Mom, stop lying. We're poor, we live in this hut, and I don't know who my father is!
Valc: You don't?!
Mom: HANS! GO OUTSIDE!
Hans felt the same surge of anger and power.
Mom: GET GOING!
Hans: No.
Mom: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "NO"?
Hans: I am not going outside. Lord Mayvin, I have a mother that terrorizes me.
Hans's mom picked up a pot. She lifted it, and brought it down upon Hans.
Hans: NOW YOU'VE DONE IT!
As his mom raised the pot again, Hans grabbed it from her hands and threw it out the window.
Mom: How...
Hans drew back his hand. He threw it forward, at his mom. He was waiting for it to hit, when he felt it strike a barrier.
Valc: We'll have none of that.
Hans saw a blue, pulsating barrier between him and everyone else.
Hans: Let me out!
Valc: APOLOGIZE TO YOUR MOTHER!
Hans: NO! I COMMAND YOU TO LET ME OUT!
Valc: YOU COMMAND ME?! I AM A NOBLE!
Hans: DIE! ME POUND YOU TO GOO!
Hans punched the barrier as hard as he could, and it shattered.
Hans: ME POUND YOU TO GOO! BLUE WALL CRACK! YOU SHIELD CRACK! YOU BONES CRACK!
Valc: How did you break the barrier?!
Hans: ME POUNDED WALL TO GOO! GOO! ALL AROUND ME, GOO!
Angelica started crying.
Hans: ME POUND BABY TO GOO!
Suddenly, he clutched his head. It hurt as if it was going to crack.
Hans: GOOOOOOoooooo!...
He fell, knocked out.

When he woke up, he felt his anger gone. Valc, Angelica, and his mother were gone too.
Hans: Mom? Lord Mayvin?
Hans walked through the deserted hut. It was morning. He was out cold through the night.
Hans: Mom?
He went outside, and found the pot.
Hans: Mom?
An old villager walked up to Hans.
Villager: Your mother is gone, Hans.
Hans: But... where?
Villager: I don't know. I saw her leave through the village gates during the night.
Hans: No... And Lord Mayvin?
Villager: He left after visiting your house, Hans.
Hans: How am I supposed to live without my mom?!
Villager: You can be the village handyman.

Dervol

After Dean's.....death and the pain from his last mental cry of pain had passed we just sort of stumbled about lost.
The magog had put his ashes in a box, probably out of sentimentality. We kept on through the strange mushroom forest until we reached it's end.
We settled down for camp under a clear sky, free from mushrooms and the strange musky smell of the forest.

Kaylianna and I were washing in a nearby stream. I couldn't quite believe how dirty you could get on a journey. Most of my time since gaining my mages staff had been spent in the Academy teaching younger students and sitting on the Order's Council.
Strange how four of us all around the same age and so young had been appointed to the Councl within months of eachother.
Of course, now there were only three of us....which led me to contemplate another problem..

'Kay?' I asked. The other woman was towelling off her hair.
'Yes?' she asked in her high musical voice.
'I've been doing a bit of thinking....and it's not good'.

Kay just looked at me.
'You mean Dean's death? I know, it was awful. He must have been in so much pain. I wish I'd known him longer. It must be hard for you...I know i'd be upset if something happened to Mighty. If you need to talk about it, you know...woman to woman, then I'm here for you, you know that right?'

I was almost too shocked to speak. Poor sweet darling Kaylianna. Always trying to be nice, and so silly at the same time.

'Kay, there wasn't....anything between Dean and I. I mean, he rescued me from Illyria', suppressing a shudder at the memory I carried on. I was a Supreme Magi! I didn't give in to a little torture!
so why do you wake up screaming some nights? a little voice inside asked. Shoving the hateful voice down I continued on,
'But nothing happened between us. I'm...sad that he's gone. He was a great man and one of the most powerful mages of our Age, but...'

'But what?' asked Kaylianna. Her hair was as dry as the towel would get it and I watched her apply a small warming spell to the air around her. I never thought of using magic for such things...certainly not to make myself....pretty.

'We have the Land's Opal. And we have the Fiery Ruby. Gods know where the Zephyr's Emerald is..... and...'

'And?' asked Kaylianna. 'Dervol what is your point, are you giving up?'

'No I'm not giving up! Am I the only one that's noticed? Where is the Ice Mace?! Where is the Water Sapphire? Dean had it! I don't know where it went when he shape shifted, probably still in his morphological field somewhere, and intact. But where is it NOW!!
Don't you see Kay? Even if we find the missing weapoms and the last gemstone, we're still missing the last one!'

Kaylianna's eyes widened as she finally realised the implications of what I'd said. She sat staring off into the night breathing hard.
Then she stood up and said', All may not be lost. Maybe Mighty can think of something;, before turning and heading back to the camp.

I stared after her for a second before following. She truly had fallen for MM if she thought he could come up with something.
Not that he wasn't good looking, though I preferred them with more hair. Or capable, he was the best Elementalistto practise in years, it was simply that the gems were fashioned so long ago, and the knowledge of how they were forged was long lost.

Arriving back at the camp in the middle of a discussion it seems that the Zephyr's Emerald could be in the middle of a big storm to the south. It fit with what I'd seen so far anyways.
We packed up our things and began to move.

Watching Kaylianna with MM I knew she hadn't even mentioned what I'd spoken to her about. She really had lost her head in a man!
I would have to get him alone, away from her before I could present my fears......

RSF looked back at the master emerald. It was now a mere dim glow, illuminating nothing but itself. He began weaving his time trap spell targeting the master emerald. Within an instant, it had vanished.

"We'll see about that." said the time mage with a sneer on his face. But that soon subsided to a sigh of frustration for he knew not how he could keep this emerald safe. The time trap spell would soon undo itself and the Forsaken Ones would come flying into the city to claim it at any moment.

RSF sat pondering. His mind ran in circles. And after getting absolutely nowhere for several minutes, he remembered the research he had been doing while waiting for Shadowcaster to return. He headed for the library and found the book, which he had been reading. It was still on the same page, the last page, the one that contained the final showdown between Motherdark and her ancestors. The time mage picked up the book and the pages seemed to come to life. What he thought was the last page, was no longer. New pages had appeared behind it and the book turned itself over presenting him with the last page.

Quote:

The Following entry was sighted by the time mage Rinaldo Se Fahrin III by means of telepathy.

Motherdark: "My children. Tell me where you are."

Ba'alithnor: "Mother. Come to the Shroomerish Forest. We have tracked the magi to this forest. All of us just met up with each other here. It seems that all of the magi have both ran to the same place."

Motherdark: "Vlandria, Illyria you had better not be fighting or else. I'll be right there."

It was clear that this book could take the knowledge about Motherdark and record it directly into the book. 'What a strange enchantment!' he thought. The time mage put the book aside to look for information on the Master Emerald, but beneath the book on Motherdark appeared a new one. It was rather thin and had a new appearance to it. Written in a bold colligraphy on the cover were the words Shadowcaster.

The time mage couldn't help but open the book. It was empty, nothing but blank pages, but words formed as they were sucked from his mind and thus all RSF ever knew of who was once his friend was now recorded, all the bad and all the good as well. It recorded the things he had forgotten and the things that had just come to pass within these very chambers.

RSF continued his search for a book on the Master Emerald. He found his way to a shelf devoted to the magical artifacts. It contained all there was to know about the gems, the weapons, and the not so famous armor. He pulled down the book on the Master Emerald and opened it. There was nothing but thousands of blank pages. The time mage almost put the book away until he realized the genious of the man who crafted this book. The time mage got out a pen and ink and wrote on the blank pages.

Quote:

I seek to fix the now drained Master Emerald.

The pages turned themselves to the beginning that read as such:

Quote:

If you truly seek to heal the Master Emerald, then this spell will be of use to you. However only a true Supreme Magi will be able to decipher its contents.

A flash of light shot out of the book as it created a new scroll and threw it onto the floor.

Two paths guided them to each other, mother and son. Alivia and Shadowcaster, an unlikely pair of distant relatives that somehow survived together in a time when fellowship meant nothing and betrayal ran rampant, even among the closest of friends and family. Yes, these two were different, sharing a bond that held strong in the midst of their separation. They were bound more tightly to each other than any of the Forsaken Ones could ever hope to be to one another. All of the Forsaken Ones cared only for power, but not Alivia. She was the sole symbol of evil with a heart still intact. Motherdark had tried to wrench it away from the assassin queen, but no amount of evil can erase the human heart. She could only hope to suppress the emotion within her daughter, never to know when it would resurface again. That was Alivia's greatest weapon against her brothers and sisters, though she did not yet know it.

Alivia's Viewpoint

Her son grew nearer with every step, Alivia knew. She would protect the shadow mage from the death that proved a threat to him now, as if by instinct. They really had become like mother and son, she thought as a smile spread unnaturally across her face. Alvia had not smiled in so long, it was perceived as weakness when she was with her siblings. But they were borrowed family, Shadowcaster's roots within her were genuine. He really was family. Alivia held more of a bond with her son now than she ever had with her brothers and sisters.

Days passed, and she never wavered in her journey, continuing onward like a machine toward her goal...toward Shadowcaster. When weariness threatened to overcome her mortal frame, the assassin queen simply thought of her son. She thought about her plans, her aspirations for him, she thought about shielding the shadow mage from those who would undo him. It was in these moments that Alivia realized she could never go back to join her siblings. Shadowcaster would be considered an outsider, and would run more of a risk to falling to that dysfunctional family than anyone else. She would not let that happen.

Then, looking up, she saw a familiar figure on the horizon...

Shadowcaster's Viewpoint

"Mission accomplished," the shadow mage kept repeating to himself, heading to where he thought his mother and Motherdark waited still for him. He did not yet know that his benefactor was gone. All the shadow mage cared about was revenge, his rivalry meant more to him than anything, even family. The time mage would pay for his sins. Somehow, he would pay.

His rival's curse was Shadowcaster's as well, as it disallowed the shadow mage to use his borrowed powers to finish his friend as he had vowed to long ago. But nothing would break his resolve once the ultimate power had been given to him. Only one step remained: the retrieval of the prison that threatened to bind him and his newfound family to fate. That was all that stood in the way of him and his goal, and then he and his mother could end both of their rivalries by ridding themselves of both RSF and Motherdark in one fell swoop. It seemed ironic that this duo opposed an unrelated pair that had been one not long before.

But they would triumph, Shadowcaster was sure. He and his mother had the one thing that no one else within their "family" had--teamwork.

"United we stand, divided they fall," the shadow mage whispered to himself with an evil smirk. He continued down the road, looking down at the ground strategizing, unaware that his mother was running toward him in the distance.

...and, perhaps more importantly, he was unaware that his mother and he were more different than they knew.

Thick clouds hung over the city leaving the sky dark like dusk. It seemed that everywhere the magic of Motherdark had sown its roots made the land take on a somber dark appearance. The wind gave RSF a cold chill that for the first time, he would never feel. He looked down at his clothes flap in the wind. He felt nothing. He touched his face... Nothing. It wasn't the same. He would never be able to feel a cool breeze on a summer day, nor the simple touch and embrace of another human. But it didn't even seem to bother the time mage. He took this as a well-deserved punishment without hesitation. He knew that he didn't deserve those luxuries, those gifts of life for he may have taken the precious lives of his entire world by unleashing a menace greater than any other.

The time mage was so unaffected and careless about his loss of life, or rather his transformation into the undead, that he was optimistic. He realized that the thick cloud cover meant that the Dark Rider was still alive and doing fine. Had the clouds not been there, the sunlight would have killed it in a few minutes, but this was good fortune and he saw it for what it was. A few months ago, he would have ignored the fact that there was cloudcover and would have vowed to take yet more vengeance to his Shadowcaster, a man he still considered to be his friend.

RSF mounted the rider and felt the sticky back of the dark rider cling to the seat of his pants, no his bones, simply another reminder of his mutation. And again it was startling to RSF, but not upsetting.

"I just hope you guys are alive and healthy when I get there," said RSF to himself. "Let's hope I'm not too late." The time mage took off like a bullet. Before him, he held out his staff tapping its energies and called to his owl which perched on his staff obeying his command.

"I need you to scout the way ahead," he commanded.

In the Shrommerish Forest

What a day.  But weren’t they all?  Once again the dark menace known to us as the
Forsaken Ones took a life.  Deimos carried the box containing Dean's ashes in silence.  A first for him.  For a small Magog he was quite quick and kept up with the rest of us.
We stopped that night to eat, wash up and get some rest.  Kaylianna and Dervol went looking for a stream to get some water and clean up.  I suppose all this traveling wasn't good for a persons hygiene.  With the thought I sniffed my underarm.  When the girls returned I would head out.  I don't think my excuse of manly musk would work for that oder.  It probably equaled the smell of fire and brimstone always wafting off of Deimos.
Vadskye must have gotten bored.  As he sat by the fire he paged through some scrolls and books contained in his bag.  Gorman had gone into a trance, probably speaking with Crook again.  And there was Deimos, sitting quietly by the fire and batting away an
ember every so often.  I was surprised, maybe even worried.  Usually we were telling the blasted demon to shut up by now.  I decided to walk over to him and see what was on his mind...for once.

Mighty Mage:  What are you doing?

Deimos:  Sitting.  You aren’t to bright are you?

Mighty Mage:  I'll pretend I didn't hear that.  I was getting...I suppose concerned.  You
haven’t said much in the past couple of days.  Just carried that box around.

Deimos:  What do you know?  You're just a mage.  Any time...ANY time I try to help or give my outlook, you guys always shoot me down.  Don't listen to the magog you say, he's an idiot.

Mighty Mage:  Well it's not like you give us much choice.  I mean really now Deimos, what useful thing have you done since the war ended.  If anything you've just tagged along.

Deimos:  See, no credit at all.  I pulled that crystal out of the mountain for you guys didn't I.  Speaking of which, who has that thing now?

Mighty Mage:  Vadskye.  And yes, ok, You have done something useful but what about all the trouble?  You know if it wasn't for you and Vadskye I'd probably be at home now instead of wandering around here.

Deimos:  I'll tell you another time I did something good.  Back when this mess started I
did my best to help you guys out at that Library.  I even found a book and you guys ignored me.

Mighty Mage:  Either way it doesn't do us any good now.

Deimos:  What do you mean?  I still have it.

surprisingly enough Deimos pulled out the book concealed in a bag I didn't even know he had.  It's reddish color just blended in I guess, either that or I just never paid attention.
The book was a bit unusual, a dark red leather served as it's cover, and probably what drew the magog to it.  In the center of the cover was what appeared to be a seal.  It was circular in form with writing around it.  Probably an older language spoken back in those days.  What really caught my attention though was at the center of the seal was a shard of
a crystal.  I pulled out the flaming ruby to look for any similarities.  None.  The shard was
more green in color but did not even resemble the Land's Opal.  If anything it almost
looked like a piece of the Master Emerald.  Maybe this book was important, but how, why?

Mighty Mage:  Let me see that thing.

Deimos:  Oh yeah, now you want to see it.

Mighty Mage:  Just hand it over.  It's not like you have any use for it.

I opened the book slowly so as not to damage it.  It was without a title and appeared to
be more of a journal than anything.  I flipped through hoping to find something
understandable when I stopped on an entry dating over...1000 years ago!?  It was in a
language I could read.  It seemed the writer was bi-lingual.
It has been several weeks since the abominations appeared.  It is obvious what they want.  Several towns have already fallen in an effort to fight them off.  They seem almost immortal.  From what I've overheard, they are children risen from darkness.
Children...Ha!  These beasts need to be stopped at all costs.  Me and a few of my fellow magi are meeting tomorrow to discuss the matter.  We had always said that we would not get involved with wars or the like but this time it affects us all.  This is where we put our feet forward and magic ready.  I suppose the only way to fight them off is by giving them a taste of their own power.  Just the other day a band of men with the ability to raise the dead, a dreadful act, were sent to combat the dark menace.  It seems they have a brother who can perform the same act.  They were unfourtianatly disposed of and are now our
enemies.  I have overheard that one of them even possesses the power to summon and control demons!  This is quite unsettling.  I can only hope that a resolution is found.

This was written right in the middle of the first war.  Hmmmm.  I wonder...

I attended the meeting although I don’t know what good it was.  A group of magi calling themselves Enchanters came forward.  They proclaimed that they had dedicated their studies to crystals and runes.  They claimed that when forged with a certain magic
that a crystal can encase a soul.  Rubbish.  I’ll believe it when I see it.  I left but before I
did they were speaking of four individuals that had the power to do what the enchanters
had planned.  Enough talk of crystals.  It is time I made a move.  Sealing them away may work but why
trust a rock when time can do just that.  Blasted fools want to play.  Let them!  This is one
Time Wizard who won’t stand idly by...

WHAT?  Did I just read that right?  Hmmmm, our author seems similar to someone I would rather not mention.  But if he was against the crystal usage than what was with the
seal?

Deimos:  Hello?  You done staring at that thing?

Mighty Mage:  I think this is...was, RSF’s ancestor’s journal.

Deimos:  RSF, as in not nice guy RSF?

Mighty Mage:  Yeah.

With a devious grin, Demios replied

Deimos:  We should burn it than.

Mighty Mage:  No, It may be useful after all.  I’ll show it to the others tomorrow.  For now keep it on you.  I need some rest.

The next day...

Kaylianna:  You found what now?

Dervol:  A book...that talks about the war?

Vadskye:  Deimos, you idiot.  Why didn’t you tell us you had something so important?

Deimos:  I did...you didn’t listen.

Gorman:  Don’t look at me, I wasn’t there.

Vadskye:  Yeah...we remember quite well.  Daring rescue and all.

Mighty Mage:  Enough.  We’ll do what we can with what we have.  Once we have the last crystal the weapons shouldn’t be too hard to find...

Kaylianna:  Uh Mighty...

Mighty Mage:  And after that...

Kaylianna:  Uh...Mighty?

Mighty Mage:  Then we can proceed to....

Kaylianna:  MIGHTY!

Mighty Mage:  WHAT?

Kaylianna:  It’s not that easy actually

Mighty Mage:  huh?

Dervol:  Tell him

Kaylianna:  Well, uh, we kind of don’t have...well we might...but...what I’m trying to say is...

Dervol:  Dean’s stuff is gone.  With him gone is all of his things.  In other words, were short the Water Sapphire.

WHAT?  THIS COULDN’T BE HAPPENING!  Why would these...FOOLS not tell me this?  Oh god.  What do we do?

Mighty Mage:  This isn’t happening!  NO!  Why is it every time I think we’ve taken a step forward it seems we get knocked back two.  WHY?

I couldn’t stay there.  In a fit of fury I ran off into the distance blasting anything in my
path.  I didn’t know where I was, nor did I care.
However someone in the distance waited and watched, ever so carefully...

____________
Though I must still bow
in awe for the awesomeness that is
MightyMage.  For he is all I could ever

Deimos: There goes not-so-MightyMage. And you tell me that I'm prone to insanity.
Kay: Give him time. It's obviously a great disappointment to him.
Deimos: I'll be able to talk some sense into him.
Vadskye: Deimos!
Deimos: What?
Vadskye: That's the stupidest- I mean, your energies are better directed towards something else?
Deimos: What something else?
Vadskye: Something... "worth your attention".
Deimos didn't notice the sarcasm.
Deimos: That's right, Vadskye. It's about time you learned. But I think that talking a little sense into Mighty might be good for him.
Kay: Just curious, but what will you tell him?
Deimos: Tell him? Nothing. I'll knock the nonsense out of him. All the sense will come back in.
Kay: You'll hurt him!
Deimos: That's the point!
Kay: No! Don't hurt him!
Deimos: Mister Puffed Up Mage needs to be taken down a peg or two. Who made him leader?
Vadskye: Deimos, calm down. Mighty is the only one who has Guardian training. He knows what he's doing.
Deimos: And I don't?
Hans: Mr. Deimos, I understand that you're angry. But last night I had this dream...
He told them about his attempt to pound Lord Mayvin into goo.
Vadskye: Interesting. Very interesting.
Hans: The thing is, I felt the anger. It wasn't just a dream.
Deimos: Then, what was it?
Kay: I'm no expert, but I would say it was some sort of... vision.
Deimos: Oh, so now you're becoming a Seer?
Kay: I said I'm not expert.
Deimos: We need an expert's opinion.
Kay: We have no expert.
Deimos: Then, we don't need anyone's opinion!
Gorman: Can you PLEASE stop arguing?
Dervol: They're not arguing. They're complaining.
Deimos: WE'RE NOT COMPLAINING OR ARGUING! WE'RE DEBATING!
Gorman: Well, can you keep the debating down? You might make Mighty even crazier.
Deimos: Mr. Self Appointed Leader can go as crazy as he likes. I don't care.
Kay: That's enough! I'm tired of arguing-
Deimos: DEBATING!
Kay: -debating, I think this is getting us nowhere-
Deimos: I beg to differ.
Vadskye: It isn't polite to beg.
Deimos: Then I will differ. This debate is establishing my dominance over the rest of you.
Everyone rolled their eyes.
Kay: -nowhere, we should be doing better things-
Deimos: DEBATING IS A GOOD THING!
Kay: -better things, at this rate we're all going to go insane, and-
She stopped abruptly.
Deimos: AND WHAT?! SAY IT! I DON'T CARE! SAY IT!
Kay: I-it's not that. It's just that someone is coming over here.

Vadskye sighed.  This was getting out of hand.  If Kaylianna hadn't noticed that someone was coming, they could have all been destroyed had it been malignant.  Thankfully, it wasn't- it was just MM returning from his "stroll".  Vadskye spoke first.

Vadskye: "Umm... Sorry?"

And so they met, mother and son, a pair reunited that stood in the midst of evils among whom they did not belong, instead led by compulsion and greed to follow the Forsaken Ones on their quest to rid the world of all that is good. For Alivia, this meant those who had scorned the darkness, those who have tried to spread light at the sake of her and those close to her heart. But her son, the single closest person to Alivia, had only used this as an excuse to kill any that stood in the way of his goal. The shadow mage's apathy grew with passing moment, and he would soon forget that which had once held him to sanity. Even now, it was slipping away for the sake of revenge.

The duo stood, face to face, again a team bent on escaping from the plans of the Forsaken Ones. But the shadow mage was waiting for the one thing his mother could not provide: ultimate power. As Alivia checked to make sure Shadowcaster had escaped unharmed, he began to speak. The shadow mage would cut no corners here.

"Where is grandmother? I must show her all that I have accomplished."

Unsteadily, Alivia looked up into the eyes of her son, but had not the heart to tell him quite yet that his fate did not lie down that road. She instead replied, "So, you were successful in draining the stone?"

"Yes," the shadow mage said with an arrogant grin, "and I met a friend of old along the way." Alivia knew not of whom her son spoke, and asked him why that mattered. She would soon learn that her son's goals differed from her own. Shadowcaster told her about RSF, about his betrayal, and about the death he had almost suffered through. But the shadow mage was not to tell the whole story, and he omitted the parts in which RSF had been redeemed. Ironically, the picture of the time mage that he painted was not much different than the truth that he himself was subject to.

Alivia stood, and proclaimed, "Why hadn't you told me about this earlier? I can help you defeat this foe--"

"No!" he shouted back, standing himself. Shadowcaster caught his temper, and more calmly continued, "Mother, this is my battle, I have started it and I must finish it. If you destroy him now, then my purpose disappears and you will have destroyed me as well. Don't you see? This is my life; it is the one thing I care about most. Once I attain your mother's powers, than I myself can defeat my rival and fulfill my purpose."

Alivia looked down at the ground, the words her son had just spoken rattling in her head.

This is my life, it is the one thing I care about most.

Now she was ready to tell him of Motherdark's destruction. He would have to love her then; he would have to rely on her to survive. Alivia was not going to lose her son to his petty revenges; she would show him how much he really needed her.

"I'm so sorry you feel that way, son, but you will not defeat your foe so easily. The power that you seek is gone, and my mother along with it," she began somberly, gradually growing more resolved in her tone, "You will now stay with me, and together, we will kill your rival and accomplish our purpose."

Taken aback and enraged, the shadow mage glared at his mother. "You lie! My purpose is still preserved, there is no our, this task is mine and mine alone and I will complete it once we find Motherdark again."

"You aren't listening, stupid boy!" she retorted, losing her patience as well, "My mother is dead, by the hand of one of my brothers. She will not come back, and you will never get the powers you desire. You need me, without me, you are nothing!"

"I've survived up until now without you, haven't I?"

Alivia unsheathed her sword. "If you leave me," she said, putting the tip of her blade to her son's throat, "then you will not live to see another day. It's your choice, Shadowcaster, live or die. Now choose!"

Shadowcaster froze, shocked that his own mother would point her weapon at him. She herself seemed surprised, but maintained her composure as she awaited her son's answer. And it came.

"I'll go with you, mother," said he, through clenched teeth.

"Good, then shall we be off?" she said, brightening up as if nothing had happened. And off they went.

"Interesting..." Motherdark thought to herself from a secluded spot nearby. She had listened to the entire quarrel in silence, and was now to make her move. She would entice the boy with the power he desired and break up the mother and son duo before the bonds between them grew too strong.

"Enter Motherdark," she muttered with a smirk, and made her way over to the pair.

Motherdark took off into the air, rising high above the treeline behind their backs and called to them.

"There you two are," said Motherdark with an irritated tone. "I'd have been here sooner, but that blasted son of mine thought it would be fun to cast an implosion on me and kill my dragon body."

Motherdark floated down landing softly before the two. She saw the look Shadowcaster gave Alivia and grinned with a devilish sly.

"I presume you have completed your task," she said maintaining her sneer of a smile. "If so, you are already more reliable than my other children." The shadow mage took a step forward as daggers flew from his eyes at his now cowering motherly figure.

"You were nothing but a pile of ash!" exclaimed Alivia. "I thought you were dead. And I can only guess the others will think the same." Motherdark's grin rose yet again another level of guile.

"All the better, my dear," said Motherdark with a silent chuckle. "And I expect that the two of you keep this wonderful tale of subterfuge afloat."

"Don't worry, Grandmother. I will keep the... subterfuge..." he said giving another dig at Alivia. "...alive and kicking."

"That's what I like to hear," said Motherdark. "Now let us go to the Master Crystal. You lead the way my Son. You more than deserve it."

Shadowcaster saw RSF approaching in the distance. He carefully observed that with Motherdark's back turned and Alivia staring down at her feet in remorse, neither of them saw the time mage approaching. He would not have his purpose destroyed. He must let them never see RSF else they would kill him before ever getting the chance to land a single blow. He looked around. The road was somewhat of a border between the plains to his left and the forest to his right.

"It is faster if we head through these woods," said Shadowcaster as he sprinted into the grove. But Motherdark was not a fool. She looked down the road behind her before following after Shadowcaster and clearly recognized the figure to be RSF.

"Alive and kicking..." she mumbled to herself as she chased after her grandson.
