Booooo! Hisssss! Booooooo!!!

A mechanical town would suck. I heard about the Forge Town idea for AB and it made my heart freeze. I agree with Bromide. Heroes is a FANTASY game. Not a shoot 'em up, gore 'em up, kill 'em all stupid idiotic missle launcher game. WHY CAN'T ANYONE BUT A PRECIOUS FEW GET THAT THROUGH THEIR HEADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would steam engines be that mechanical or futurist?

Afterall there have been many other succesful fantasy strategy games with steam engines or mech (like a Fantasy General)

Well having a mechanical town isn't a really good idea because it strays from the actual game itself.  It is all based on Medieval Fantasy.  Having something that starts to lean towards mechanical is not very pleasing.  It kind of strays too close to our current modern times and isn't really 'unique' with its magic anymore.

Forge was a horrible idea for HoMM for the fact that it was deviated far away from the rest of the towns in HoMM.  It breaks the image and it breaks the perspective.

I am a Sci-Fi trekky/nut/geek myself, but that just turns the game into a different type onto itself.

Every bit of fantasy has some realism in it.  But how can your imagination look at the idea of having a Dragon go against a tank?

The vicarious experience loses itself.

I've found out more about the Forge Town(the mech town that was going to be in AB instead of Conflux), and I'm sort of sorry they didn't put it in the game. There are lots of remnants of the Forge in AB, however.

1. On the box, in the upper left, is a building with smoke stacks. That is the Forge Town.

2. In one of the AB movies, it shows Roland looking across a lake at a building, that looks like the one previously mentioned. It too is the Forge.

It's funny to think about: Why didn't these things get changed to Conflux?

How to make a mech town work in HOMM

I agree that most of the ideas so far for a mech/tech town would not mesh well into HOMM but that doesn't mean that the whole idea is bad.

Here's my idea for a balanced mech town.

Gnome Apprentice > Gnome Tinker - Fast but weak. Attacks with a hammer.

Stone Gargoyle > Greater Gargoyle
pretty much same as existing

Engineer > Master Engineer
Has the ability to remove obstacles from battle field and gives a bonus to siege weapon usage. Also has the ability to repair(restore health) to animated/mech creatures.
Weak attack; comparable to most shooters' hand-to-hand.

Clay Warrior > Stone Warrior
Starts off as a sort of featureless humanoid with a sling or something that shoots small shots. Upgrades to a Bigger creature made of Large Rocks that has no hand-to-hand penalty. Attacks with fists when hand-to-hand)

Living Armor > Glowing Armor
Living Armor would be empty armor with the ability to move. Glowing Armor would be red hot and have a natural ability similar to the fire shield spell. (When hand-to-hand combat occurs towards the armor then a percentage of the damage is applied to the attacker as well.)

Tar Golem > Steel Golem > Gold Golem > Diamond Golem
pretty much same as existing (except for tar golem. I think they would look pretty cool.)

Clockwork Dragon > Rust Dragon > Crystal Dragon
Non-flying mechanical dragon. Slow moving but decent physical attack. Rust and Crystal same as before except for any changes required for game balance.

Hero Classes could include Artificer for the Magic and Man at Arms for the Might. These heroes would start with war machine ability and Estates.

Let me know what you think whether you like or not. Feedback never hurts in the process and it has a good chance of helping. I really think the Clockwork Dragon would be cool.

It would be good, but it is too much like the Academy/Tower already, but it would be excellent as a future game. They would need different heroes and move the wizards to another town.

Not a full mech town please!

This is supposed to be a fantasy game, almost medieval. I don't want droids running around firing lasers. Cannons, to me, would be about the limit for any technology (and that's a bit of a stretch). An artifice town, with golems, magically animated creatures, and their creators, would be acceptable, but it's a little too much like Academy.

Please, no mech!

I don't want a mech town. The ideas of not full mech town seem better to me,
but I think that the best we could have was the tower of H3 which was very good.

It is not only a personnal opinion. The medieval fantazy is not a universe when you can put anything.
The idea of ingeneers is not appropriate, even if it's less
chocking than tanks and droids.

Nope nope nope, this has been said before in the Forge arguments that M&M and HoMM are two entirely different things in different worlds. There are too many differences to list here, but know that Heroes has been a separate game from Might and Magic, though they take place in basically the same worlds they have different elements and changes made to each game. Two different, not the same.

I thought gnomes were mythological too.

The farthest we can go in Heroes to a Mech town is with Golems in the Academy. We also neeed to keep in mind that these are magically animated beings. They are not true electricity or mechanics.

While mech units like the Dragon Golem and regular Golems are acceptible in the Academy, a Town made entirely out of these creatures would just become boring and redundant. I mean, imagine what the units would be:

Level 1...Halfling Golem | Dwarf Golem
Level 2...Golem | Magic/Mage Golem
Level 3...Naga Golem/ Genie??! Golem
Level 4...Giant Golem/ Dragon Golem

Pretty redundant and rediculous, huh?

Of course a full golem castle would be redundant. They can't go further than in h4. I think that they have allready been too far because of the desine of the dragon golem, which is not a bad idea but looks like a mechanical robot.
I have never played Might and magic, if I had played this game, I am sure I would have hated the mechanical monsters.

I know what you mean. I think they could have done a better job making the Dragon Golem look more like magically animated metal and rock rather than a computer-controlled 23rd Century android.

God people, we have a mix of magic and technology as a game already.

It happens to be called "Arcanum" and yes I'm sure you have probably heard of it.

I presume someone didn't post this before, too lazy to check pages 2-4. Anyway, that general outline of a town in the first page sounded good, but I seriously don't think 3DO would use anything like that, the most mechanical they have gone is Ballistas, heh. Of course, it could always be released in an unofficial add-on, but then unless they have really good authors, they don't seem to match the originality, concepts, and balance of the original thing itself.

.:Hyperion:.

(I did an entire post without a smily face! This must be about, the 5th one probably, heh.)

what if this earthia or erathia or whatever is just a world that doesn't have to deal with earthly politics mut can concentrate on mythology and fantasy? if it would be like wars between the ancient greek asylum and the german nazy necro or whatever, it would be rather disturbing in a fantasy world imho. just like tolkien made up middle-earth for his lotr to claim that it's not connected with the world wars i and ii. btw there are some possibilities of lame interpretations in tolkien, e.g.:
mithril: harder than steel (some aluminium alloys are harder than steel, e.g. with La and Ac) and extracted from ore by secret dwarven magic (electrolysis).
flying steed of the nazgul: a species from ancient times that was kept alive in some dungeons and was now used as the steed of nazgul. it's a lizard with leather wings and a beak (well, yeah, looks like some dinosaur, e.g. pterodactylus or sth).
in 'the hobbit' when they were attacked by orcs in the cave where the were seeking shelter from storm, gandalf created an explosion of fire that killed 8 orcs (gandalf was proficient at fireworks and.. well.. looks like he used a grenade this time).
now, not to provoke such lame interpretations in a fantasy atmosphere, it's imho a good idea to create a mythological world and name it erathia or middle-earth or the uttermost west or land or whatever. but imho such names don't mean that it's automatically a futuristic world.
and i don't think that tech should be included in the game because it's included in some other game (huh?). they have dwarven riflemen in warcraft iii, but no need to have them in homm.
