LOTR - Return of the king

Ok, I don't know if someone already made such a thread. Moderators could just delete or merge (or whatever ) if they find a similar thread...

Well, I went to cinema last night to see the LOTR-ROTK movie and after 3 hours and 20 minutes the entire adventure was over for Frodo and the rest of our friends.

I have been looking forward to this film since December last year, and I've heard that: "It's much better than the two first movies." I think it was the director himself who made this promise.

Alas, I have to say I'm disapointed with the movie. It's not that the actors are bad or that the movie isn't entertaining enough, but it's frankly not what I'd hoped for.

The opening was good, and the first minutes of the film was stuff that happened in the end of book 2. I sat there, however, waiting to see more of Saruman but when the words "THE END" popped up on the screen I lost all hope. There was no "scouring of the shire." Frodo and his friends returned to the shire where everything was peaceful and everybody was happy. (BTW it was good that they included the grey havens, and the scene on the harbour is maybe enough to make us shed some tears. Still, the ending isn't complete without the showdown with Saruman.)

I think that the main problem with the movie is that it was too focused on one single event: The battle of Pellenor fields. I admit that it's a very important part of the last book, but it's still just ONE SINGLE CHAPTER! Guess it's something with battle looking good on screen. But Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas' journey through the "paths of the dead" was too short, and wasn't impressive at all.  There were also a lot of other minor flaws, which I don't have time to mention.

This was, after all, a good movie.. but I still think the first was best. What do you think?

I have to admit, reading the books I pretty much thought the story was over after they saved the world.

Spending another third of the book coming back to save a small town... was soooo boring and anti-climatic.

Tolkien (sp) should have ended the book a few words after Gollum took a hot bath.

They did film a 7 minute "closure" scene with Sauramon (sp again) that was not included.  There has been much debate about it, and it will be in the DVD version... but they felt the film was too long.

I wont see it until next week, so I can't have a real opinion yet if it would have been better or not.

I didn't see the last part of the movie, but I have to say that not including the last chapter was a smart ideea. First and foremost, this movie is about eye-candy, it's all about grandor, gigantic scenes with gigantic battles and so on. After the destruction of the ring, returning to the shire was boring. I mean, after The mountain of doom and orcs and all that, you go back to that stupid little village of farmers just to send Saruman packing, not even another great battle. It would have been stupid.

They can never please everyone, but I always found in the book that the part of the shire was redundant and that the actual story ended with the crowning of Aragorn.

And views can be so different. I have heard other people say that the first 20 minutes were the worst part of the entire trilogy.

Anyway, I will be seeing it this Saturday.

Ok, to everyone who haven't seen the movie:

This thread is a spoiler, so don't read it. (But I guess most of you have read the books so surely you know what is going to happen.)

Just one thing about the end:
I think that the movie was good, but the book tells about Aragorn and Eowyn and what happened between them, but the movie doesn't concentrate on this. I know it's impossible to include everything, but this bit about Aragorn and Eowyn shouldn't be the hardest part to make?

But it's a very good movie anyway. You should all see it!!! Definately!

Lord Of The Rings

Among my group of friends I'm considered the most fanatical concerning J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". One friend is the ultimate Startrek fan and the other is the ultimate Starwars fan.
I saw the movie last night and it was fantastic. Was it exactly like the book? No, but that's alright. It was terrific and splendid and dazzling. My friends who know me would tell you that I would go to see this movie even if it cost me my entire paycheck. I love the characters and the adventures they find themselves in.
No one matches the ability to describe an elf the way Tolkien does. I'm amazed every time he goes into his ideas on what an elf is like.
War was a large part of this segment of the trilogy. I think the movie, more so than the book, showed just what kind of an influence fighting in the war had on Tolkien. War does many things to a person. To some it changes them for the worse and to others it changes them for the better giving them a truly thankful opinion for the simple things in life.
Tolkien's story is beautiful a work of art and I lose myself in the depths of its details whenever I get the chance to relax.

Ok, have three movies that cost 300 million to make, and have them gross almost 3 billion in worldwide box office.

Then put them on DVD.....

Now, walk away....

Ok, you couldn't do it could you?

The Hobbit will be made, my guess, 2007 release.

Peter jackson did a recent interview and when they asked he said he'd "love" to do it.  The rights haven't been secured, and nothing official has been said though.

The cool part is that a lot of the actors could return... or a few at least .

Hm.. agree with the Bone Drag..., About the book I didn't see the movie yet. It will bein Poland at 1st January I think. I know I'll like the film. The impression of the 1st and 2nd part had done such influence on me that I'll prolly watch it quite several times.

And about the elves. Tolkien did a good work, he had to. It has taken about 20 years to make that book.

Elves can look pretty horryfing u know.

Hmm well Laelth I haven't seen the Return of the King yet but so far I too have been very disappointed. Since I don't really like "spoilers" I didn't read your stuff yet, even though I don't know what there is to spoil because so far everything has been spoiled.

If you're thinking the way I am and even if you're not, I may be among the minority but I would've preferred a movie that stuck more to what actually happened. Throughout FotR and TTT I couldn't help the continuous thoughts that ran through my head of how wrong everything is and how so much was changed. I don't care if it made a better movie overall, and although I still enjoyed it, well let's just say I would've been great to see the entire story played out from start to beginning as closely to the text as possible.

At least it wouldn't make my head hurt so much trying to actually think during a movie, trying to figure out what's going on because people aren't where they're supposed to be and stuff happens at different times and people just disappear and so on.

Yep yep...I'll probably have more to say once I've seen it, whenever that'll be.

Laelth

Laelth you really hit home just about every thought that passed through my mind. I had no idea there was someone else out there that felt the same as I do. I couldn't agree with you more about your feelings on the importance of the dialogue. It was exactly as you say and more. I did like the movie but I have never seen a movie that followed the book it was made after all that well. But after reading your thoughts I feel as I though I was just making excuses for an otherwise unexcusable Peter Jackson. You are right. He did butcher the Gandalf character and he did remove an absolutely vital scene from the battle of pelenor fields. Ok he removed many.(see I'm still letting him get off too easily) It's good to be reassured by your thoughts. I also have two daughters and I have a son too. Too bad you don't live in Oregon =( Perhaps we could talk more some other time.

Hi Consis,

Can't say I'm likely to be in Oregon any time soon, but I certainly felt the need to gripe about the film as soon as I got out of the theater.  I had to write my critique because my wife (while she agreed with me) quickly got tired of hearing me complaining about it.

I suspect, though, that you and I aren't the only ones who will share this appraisal of the film.  After seeing it a few times, I suppose I'll learn to appreciate it for what it is, but I don't think I'll ever shake the feeling that it should have been much better.

Faith in the book

I think we can rest assured that the book will outlast the movie. The man was an Oxford scholar of ancient languages and the book was written back in the 1940's during and after the war. His friend was the well-known author, C.H. Lewis(Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). This book is great without the movie and I think it will outlast this Peter Jackson representation. Think about how long the book has lasted thus far. This movie will be an interesting collector's item to go with the book and nothing more. As I said before the movie does something that the book does not. Many of Tolkien's fans and critics have long been saying that this book was a fiction heavily influenced by his experiences in the war. He adamantly denied it but this movie brings new light to that old scepticism. I for one shall never fear for my loving middle earth books written by an honourable Oxford scholar and professor, J.R.R. Tolkien.
