I wish I could agree with you on this one, but I'm afraid I can't. Gone with the Wind came out in, what, 1939? How many of us have seen that movie? How many of us have read the book? One of the problems with making a bad movie is that a movie, even a bad one, can crush a good book. Doesn't always happen, I suppose, but it can. People will still read the book, sure, but a lot of people won't. Instead, they'll see a really cool fantasy/action flick ... but they'll miss a great story. 
still depressed about it ...

I've never seen that movie but I've sure read the book. Actually I didn't think that highly of it but it was hardly bad, at least in my opinion.
Maybe we should make our own movie!

Funny you should say that, RMS. My grandmother had already read the book before the movie came out, and she was mad about how the movie made Scarlet look "shallow" (to use her words) 
All the same, though, I bet you're the exception. I suspect a lot more people have seen the movie than have read the book.

I cried in the movie at this scene. It was the most moving for me regardless of how the director changed the script from the book. My description of the scenne pales to the writing abilities of Tolkien so I'll just copy the text to give everyone an idea of what happened in it.
Let us not forget the danger on our left. The Rohirrim may come, and they may not. But Faramir has told us of a great strength drawing ever to the Black Gate. More than one host may issue from it, and strike for more than one passage.
'Much must be risked in war,' said Denethor. 'Cair Andros is manned, and no more can be sent so far. But I will not yield the River and the Pelennor unfought-not if there is a captain here who has still the courage to do his lord's will.'
Then all were silent. But at length Faramir said: 'I do not oppose your will, sire. Since you are robbed of Borimir, I will go and do what I can in his stead-if you command it.'
'I do so,' said Denethor.
'Then farewell!' said Faramir. 'But if I should return, think better of me!'
'That depends on the manner of your return,' said Denethor.
Gandalf it was that last spoke to Faramir ere he rode east. 'Do not throw your life away rashly or in bitterness,' he said. 'You will be needed here, for other things than war. Your father loves you, Faramir, and will remember it ere the end. Farewell!'
I'll jump ahead in the book a little to when Faramir returns and his father the Steward of Gondor, Lord Denethor
stays with him at his bedside.
'I sent my son forth, unthanked, unblessed, out into needless peril, and here he lies with poison in his veins. Nay, nay whatever may now betide in war, my line too is ending, even the House of the Stewards has failed.'
In the movie ofcourse Pippin sings a very sad song while Faramir is off in a hopeless battle and when he returns unconscious Denethor screams for all the soldiers to abandon their posts. It was a very moving scene for me when Faramir leaves without his father telling him that he loved him. Gandalf was right, he did remember before the end.

I've found that the books are almost always better and more detailed than the movie version. I, however liked the movie a great deal.
With so many loose ends to tie up, there was bound to be some dissapointments, but I enjoyed it.

I had high hopes for the movie....since the disparity between the slow and boring books, and the movie was large (thank god). The one thing I didnt want was to come out disappointed, and actually the opposite happened.
Lord of the Rings Books: Slow and rambling...Tolkien told a great story as we all know, bit it is slow.
Lord of the Rings Movies: Fast action packed, grandiose....every other superlative I can think of. The siege of Minas Tirith I dont think can ever be beaten by any battle scene again....the approach to Minas Morgul was brilliant, captivating.... Gandalf calling the eagles to take out the Nazgul, amazing scene, so many scenes I could keep going on with. The Editing out of Tom Bombadil, Saruman out of the last movie (to have him in control of the shire upon the return was anticlimactic anyway) were glaring but great omissions. To write about the movie how I want to would take forever. But some omissions were obviously necessary and I think Jackson got it dead right.
My suggestion is go and appreciate what it is, one mans dedication to what is probably the birth of the nodern fantasy genre. Immerse yourself in it, lose yourself in the detail, the effort put into this brilliant series. glue yourself to that screen for over 3 hours and forget life for a while, it will help to do that very easily.
and for those who feel the need to endlessly compare screenplay adaptations with the movie....try enjoying it for the movie itself, no movie can reproduce books exactly, that would be boring, and definitely not adventurous. I have a different view to Tolkien books than most, and I always get lambasted for it, but its ok. Stand aside and look at this movie as it is, not a total dedication, perfectly preserved in every way, but a damn brilliant movie.

Very much agree, this whole scene was very moving, poignant. And I'm not afraid to say I was a lil teary several times through the show  I saw movies like Braveheart, Dances with Wolves...epics that were really moving, also movies like Gladiator that I considered grandiose, spectacular...but they pale next to this, they really do.

I liked the movie. I've read Laelth post in the Vandea forum, and I agree with most of that(...everything...).
---SPOILERS---
But something that really disappointed me is the height of Merry and Pippin in the end of the movie. In the extended version of The Two Towers, there is a scene that shows them drinking the Ent's juice(dont remmember the true name). But in the Return of the King they are still as tall as any other hobbit. They should've grown a lot!

the movie is excellent but a scene was terrible... aragon kissed liv tyler like an animal , seeing aragorn's tongue lol ; man u kiss elven princess in tolkien movie , u arent in andrew blake movie

Ending too long. Just saw it yesterday. It was good, no doubt, but it seems like it was just a little off-sync somehow.
I noticed how the audience kept huffing as the ending dragged on, especially for those who have not read the book.
If the movie concluded at the crowning ceremony in Minas Tirith, it may have been better off.

I liked the movie alot. I didn't like the Two Towers so I was expecting this to be bad, it was much better than I thought. I liked most of the movie except the end, the end was long. It ended like 5 times, showing somebody then a long pause then showing somebody else. I also didn't like how Frodo sailed away, he should have stayed in the Shire.
