And what's the origin of word 'gay'? My dictionary says it means smth like joyful, merry, or dissolute (?), or light/motley colors. Is it the same cituation that in Russian when the word 'blue'(cyanic?) is a slang word for a homosexual male, but everyone giggle when we use it in usual sense (blue color, blue sky, blue water)...

Promotion

I think the largest amount of promotion for gay people comes from the push and shove concept. Gay people get pushed so they push back. And sometimes it goes the other way too. Is it a big deal that people are gay? Not really but then why throughout the first 80 years of this century were gay people in colleges being killed and beaten and whatnot? That stuff actually still happens now. My point is that gayness ( <---- love that word )is never gonna go away, but if the public wants the issue to settle at least some, they should just ignore it.

***Giggle***

I think "Gayness" is a funny word too

We seem to have found ourselves making up words as we go. Always count on us americans to play by their own rules. Ah well, we can't stop it. I suppose we might as well join it.

As for myself. I have no gayness in me. My wife has no gayness and I don't know any couples of gayness. Let's not worry about putting an end to the gayness and try to get on with our lives.

Origin of the word gay:

Much commentary about this adjective referring to homosexuals exists, mostly having to do with usage. Our concern here, however, is etymology and two mistaken notions prevail. The first is that gay, meaning homosexual, originated as an acronym for Good As You. The second is that it is of relatively recent origin, dating only to the late 1960s. Both of these ideas are in error.

Many, believe that gay came to mean homosexual only in the late 1960s with the Stonewall riot and the rise of the gay rights movement. This is not the case. The error these people are making is confusing the adoption of the term by the heterosexual community, and thus the English language as a whole, with its origin. The term is in fact much older, being used by homosexuals to refer to themselves with certainty as early as the 1920s, and possibly as early as the 1860s.

Lighter gives the earliest usage cite as a 1922 quote from Gertrude Stein's "Miss Furr & Mrs. Skeene" which appeared in Vanity Fair. It is uncertain, however, if Stein's use of gay in this case is a reference to lesbianism or to the [then] conventional sense of gay meaning happy:

They were ... gay, they learned little things that are things in being gay, ... they were quite regularly gay.
The first unequivocal written use of gay to mean homosexual is in 1929, in Noel Coward's musical Bittersweet. In the song Green Carnation, four overdressed, 1890s dandies sing:

Pretty boys, witty boys, You may sneer
At our disintegration.
Haughty boys, naughty boys,
Dear, dear, dear!
Swooning with affectation...
And as we are the reason
For the "Nineties" being gay,
We all wear a green carnation.

The penultimate line refers to the 1890s, which were commonly called the gay nineties. In general usage, this appellation had nothing to do with homosexuality, but in this context, Coward clearly uses it as a double entendre.

Gay appears again in 1933 in Ford and Tyler's Young & Evil. In 1938 in the movie Bringing Up Baby, the character played by Cary Grant, when asked why he is wearing women's clothing replies, "Because I just went gay all of a sudden." In retrospect, this is obviously a joke intended to slip past the censors. In their 1941 book Sexual Variations, Gershon Legman and G.V. Henry cite gay as a slang term for homosexual, which indicates that it was in use for some time prior.

Lighter also indirectly cites an 1868 song by female impersonator Will S. Hays titled, Gay Young Clerk in the Dry Goods Store. The lyrics do not explicitly link the word with homosexuality, but they can be interpreted that way, especially if sung by a man in drag. Then again, that may be reading too much into the lyrics. You be the judge:

It's about a chap, perhaps you know,
I'm told he is 'Nobody's beau,'
But maybe you all knew that before,
He's a lively clerk in a Dry-Goods Store.
O! Augustus Dolphus is his name,
From Skiddy-ma-dink they say he came,
He's a handsome man and he's proud and poor,
This gay young clerk in the Dry-Goods Store.
OK, so gay was definitely in use in the 1920s, and perhaps earlier, but how did the term come to be associated with homosexuals? Several possibilities exist, but the acronym for Good As You is not one of them.
The most likely explanation is that it derives from gaycat or geycat, a slang term for a tramp or hobo who is new to the road. Gaycats were commonly in the company of older tramps, implying a homosexual relationship. The term, according to Lighter, dates to at least the 1890s. Gaycats were employed as lookouts while other hoboes committed crimes. The OED2 cites the 1935 Underworld & Prison Slang by N. Ersine as defining geycat as a homosexual boy. The origin of gaycat is unknown. Green, however, says a gay cat was a tramp who offered sexual services to women.

Another possible origin is the late nineteenth century slang usage of gay to mean promiscuous. A gay house meant a brothel. This sexual sense of the term could have become associated with homosexual promiscuity and the heterosexual sense lost.

Nice Article

That's an interesting article. I like it. I think it's very informative and educational. Thankyou.

Now, would you mind giving whomever wrote it the proper acknowledgements? I half wonder if you didn't simply copy and paste it from somewhere else.

How would you like it if someone copy/pasted your material without giving you the proper acknowledgements? If this weren't the internet and that was given to me on paper I would tend to think that you wrote it. This is clearly a case of borderline plagiarism.

Being gay?

Well, here is the thing. If there are gay people around, oh well, can't do much about that, but when they have gay parades at DISNEY WORLD??? Dude....a bunch of Christian families with little children came to Disney World that day and were kind of surprised when there came a huge crowd of guys making out. That's not really....apetizing. Otherwise, if people are gay, I dont make fun of them or anything. But if they can have a gay parade, why can't we a have a straight parade??? Hello?? If they dont want to make a big deal of what they choose to do, then why have a gay parade??

I'm sorry, but in the bible, God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

I don't care about the Bible. God could have made two transexuals as well, and it wouldn't matter to me. Tutsy and Putsy instead of Adam and Eve. How about that?

Also, people have straight parades all the time, unless you mean about anti-gay parades, which is clearly a discriminatory practice that mustn't be allowed. Gay people however, need to show others that they exist and that they need to be accepted as a normal and equal part of the society in which they live in. Once this is achieved, there will be no need for gay-parades anymore.

Hello Ruby!  I don't think we've met just yet.  It is a pleasure.

My experience is that when one is a member of a class or group which experiences oppression, the group, its members, demonstrate or "parade" in order to draw attention to the existence of the oppression, not necessarily membership in the group itself.  So since straight people have never been oppressed for the fact of being straight, the inclination to have a parade in order to attempt to make a statement of equality isn't really necessary.

However, the way things have been going here in the US with the gay marriage issue lately, it would not surprise me in the least if we were to see a straight pride parade as a backlash to the current movement.  The bands of marauding conservatives have their good days too!!!  LOL!!!

No way... I've heard somewhere, honestly... The first sexual experience for Adam was with female animals, but he didn't like it and asked God to create a woman... "On damn, I really forgot something - one creature has no pair" (C) Jean Eiffel

When I was living at a shelter my brother not on the picture god rest his soul & a friend of mine wanted to do somethang.
My other friend is gay.
SOme may know that sometimes San Francisco holds a gay parade & since he was a good friend of mine Richard & I said F it why not.
First we went to his friends house on Castro.
Nice people even tho it was a little uncomfortable.
We were unscathed LOL.
After we went to the parade & women & Men dressed like so many people like this guy as Tarzan & all that.
Then one asked if i wanted to walk with him I was like hell no lol.

Another came to Richard & he was like Duude I am straight man forget you lol.
Other friend was talking to the others & after we saw Tarzan with his cloth showing some crazy stuff we said F this & booged left him behind.
We had to pretend we were together so no one else would pick up on us.
Just walking together no holdiong hands or nothing like that.
We must of been the only straight people there.
We catch Bart back to Daly City (Bart is a subway train).

We see a nun getting into the doorway & her nun outfit gets caught in the doorway & Richard goes Mam she turns around then Richard goes,I mean sir your dress is caught in the door.
Hes like in sexy manly voice "Thank you"
We said F this & went to another cart lol.

Like I always say As long as you dont have  aproblem that I am straight then I dont have a problem if your gay lol.
It was a weird experience but theres alot of nice people.
SOme are crazy & some just want you.
Be careful & watch your back .
