Technological advances in the Fantasy genre?

I would like spark a food for thought suggestionare by posing some questions to all those with a deep love for the genre of fantasy-fiction gaming centered in a medievil time period.

How far should technological advances be allowed to go in Heroes V?

Question #1: Catapults for siege or stealth bomber?

Question #2: Heavily armored tanks for cavalry or mounted knights?

Question #3: Swords or Laser guns?

Question #4: Castle or underground bunker?

Question #5: Magic spell called 'Cure' or penicillin?

Question #6: Gold standard or national currency?

The reason I have brought these obviously extreme comparisons up is because I feel that some of the suggestions that have been posted in some of the threads for Heroes V Altar of Wishes do not belong in a suggestion forum for a game that will most likely have a time period centered around 476 and 1450 AD. I would like to ask all the people who are making suggestions for Heroes V to please keep the time period in mind when offering their suggestions.

Even though the time period of the middle ages is a specific period of technological achievment I have also considered that this game is a complete work of fiction. While it may conform to a middle age time period it is not restricted to it. I would like to ask anyone who has played a fantasy fiction game that mixed both technology and medieval genre to please offer their thoughts on what Heroes V might do with technology in this type of genre.

I feel it will take a very fine line of balance for technology to be mixed with medieval fiction remain a successful release.

In my own experience the only games that I know that have successfully mixed a very highly advanced state of technology with a magical middle age sword-weilding genre were the Final Fantasy series for the game console audience, the Samurai Jack cartoon on the cartoon network, and WarCraft III(Humans). It started with Final Fantasy 2 and has been implemented ever since with inventions such as:

-->Flying Skyship

-->Ultra-Mega Blast cannons

-->Travelling to the moon

-->Using hand guns and rifles

-->Train systems in large cities

-->Ultra-mechanized monsters of limitless power threatening your quest as the adventurer

This question gnaws at my imagination daily after seeing the concept art released for Heroes V. I am impatiently awaiting with eager anticipation to what's in store for we Heroes fans.

lol heroes is a fantasy game series, so i really doubt that there will be stealth fighters or nukes and such in heroes V. And i really dont want it to be either, if i wanna nuke a town id play civ3.

So IMO the game concept (fantasy creatures) should stay is it is as it is one thing that characterizes the homm series.

Let us not forget Might and Magic 7. They had laser pistols, laser rifles, a submarine, a whole bunch of droids and diving suits. All-in-all, they managed to blend these elements quite well into the game and I wouldn't mind seeing something like this in other heroes games as long as they explain it well enough in the storyline (as was the case in MM7) and not use too much of it (a rare hero or unit with a gun is fine, an entire city of them is not).

hey,, don't encourage them to add stuff like this
yes, you are right, it CAN be done and it fit, but the chances of success are very low  i'd rather see a lot of FANTASY creatures which simply aren't in homm get added.  i'm sure someone else can make a great list while i probably can't, so i wont, but there are a lot of cool ones that arent in homm.

my own personal opinion is: if they don't have droids, then they don't have to explain well enough why they have droids.

However there IS place for things like gunpowder or flamethrower !

Just because typical europeans were much behind Greeks(flamer) or Chineese (Gunpowder), doesn't mean that such toys should be unavailable.

Still, I think that they should be very primitive and unperfect. Like no guns whatsover, no cannons, gunpowder used for heavy, troublesome bombs and flamethrower for siege machines.

It was based more on coal, oil, high temperature etc but it WORKED for Beotian people (so-called Greek Flames, siege of Delion).

As for gunpowder, Chineese were able to blow fortifications with it, even through the technology of guns and cannons came much later.

So as long as it's limited to siege machines, and perhaps spell-like tricks for might heroes and commanders... why not ?

Might and Magic VI also ends in a spaceship with a nuclear reactor, where the heroes blast around with blasters. And I do agree with you that this should remain within a very small group. The explanation was that these weapons were the remainders of the civilization of the ancients. Therefore, I think that the high-tech parts should remain in the scope of the Might and Magic games, as there is no way to properly explain the presence of high-tech elements in Heroes of Might and Magic.
However, I have no objection again low-tech material. Meaning, the technical knowledge that the ancient romans and greeks possessed, along with the knowledge of the medieval alchemists. Things like war machines, greek fire should not be a problem, along with the usual magic gadgets.

I feel that no 'tech' gadgets should appear in the game.  I would like this to remain a medievil time-frame game.  I don't want my pikemen to get 'nuked' by B-1 Bombers.

If I wanted to play Civilazation, I would buy it.  This is a tolkien-fantasy genre game.  Stick with what works.

IMO, the blasters at the end of MM7 ruined the experience for me.  I build up my Axe to GM level...only to put it down for the much more advanced blasters?!?!?!  HUH?!?!?!

Oh well, just my $.02

? of course! the portals can be designed to let see the ancient technology under them, there could be ruins with rusty droids, the technology used in most "magic" objects could be visible, not too obvious, just hardly noticeable.
Now, laser guns, well, that's a little too much imo, maybe some hi-tech "magic" artifacts would be enough, but no stereotyped object.
Droids in town, no, but mechanical non-electric machines (Da Vinci-like machines) would fit perfectly in a dwarves, orcs or gremlins town.
So my answers:
1- catapults and some other machines
2- both, but not in the same castle. A tank with gremlins inside to make it move with, one canon/harpoon.
3- Swords, but some artifacts can contain hi tech elements (breastplate of regeneration for example).
4- both, but no "bunker", a cache in a mine under the castle would be enough.
5- healing is ok, I don't think throwing penicillin to stack on the other side of the battlefield would look good.
6- gold: the kingdoms in heroes don't have time to set a currency, and if they do, it's made of gold.

En......

Well...In my opinion,when you have something in the game such as a human-made-tank,you need to explain it.

It came from....WHERE?WHEN?HOW...and Why it came to the Heroes world?

So.....

Unless you want to continue the Might and Magic story,which did have a Sci-Fi background.

Since the planet where the Heroes happened is a "colony" of some beings (known as the Ancients), it is not a pure fantasy game....I think.

Does heroes take place in the middle ages or does it take place 5,000 years in the future?

If it takes place in the future, there may be some ancient artifact discovered that shoots lead bolts. It might be quite difficult to find ammunition though...

I actually like the idea of a futuristic city and the exploration of time and ancient / future civilizations. It should probably be done in an expansion pack though.

I really liked the old Varn dungeon in mm(I think it was 7). It had an egyption theme. Some believe that ancient Egypt was ruled by an advanced race...

They already tried to do this in a Homm 3 expansion. The elemental town was supposed to be a techno town. When the homm community found out there was a huge backlash.

I think they need to stick to a pure the fantasy setting. No guns.

But have you ever seen that town. It was way overdone. It is a very good example of what people would not like to see in Heroes.

http://www.guardiansgrove.com/album_pic.php?pic_id=99

As for the connection with the ancients, that is a good thing for M&M, as it only deals with a few characters, and they may occasionally find a nice artifact from the days of yore.
Besides, I never found the blasters to be such good weapons. Once I found the blasters in M&M7, I gave them to my magic characters (because they didn't have any advanced weapon skills anyway) and my might characters just kept bashing with their old weapons. In M&M6, I only used the blasters when I actually needed them. Otherwise, I kept my swords, spears and daggers. Did you know that even a sorcerer can turn into an awesome fighter when wielding two Mordred daggers with Master Dagger.

Let's analyze what is wrong in this picture, this may help in this topic:
- Electricity: those blue lights are obviously electric lights, they need some electric generator of some sort (if I remember it well the obelisk with lightning in the back was the grail, not a generator), this is far beyond the knowledge one can aquire, it requires special materials which are NOT in the game, so this is wrong.
- Concrete: the use of concrete is not logical, one may find a way to change a creature into a "cyborg", it is not related to this kind of material.
- Barbed wire! you can see it on the two small concrete towers.
- "Industrial" windows: in HOMM games, all windows are small, some of them here are very large, and their shape makes it difficult to believe they were made in a medieval age.
- The use of large pieces of metal: I think this is wrong too, a patchwork of metal would have been ok, but in a medieval theme, the metal cannot be used that way.

Actually, the rusty/red light buildings are almost correct, they look like ancient industrial buildings, but the other ones (white/blue) just look like a spaceship is gonna land.

Just thought of this...

But didn't they have space ships and stuff in the earlier Might & Magic (think its M&M1-M&M5) games - ie. the adventurers chasing evil dude Sheltem across the galaxy in space ships, and visiting CRON, VARN, and Terra during the process.
