Mordikai screamed aloud again, despite the guard's warnings. The ranger was now blind with rage, not out of worry for anyone else, but out of spite that he would now get no crystal, a prize he was most eager to have. Had he still had his sword, the moronic guard would be dead, but he didn't. Everything had been taken, and the ranger found himself in only a plain white shirt and some loose fitting pants that smelled of blood. That bastard would pay. Mordikai screamed aloud and shook the bars violently again, provoking the guard.

"Damnit, boy! Shut up! How'm I s'pposed t'get any sleep around here with all yer racket. Now pipe down."

"No, I won't pipe down, goat herder," as Mordikai had nicknamed the guard, who had a strong country accent, "you let me out of this cell or else I'll rip your throat out myself, you hear me?"

The guard ignored him and put his hat over his eyes in an attempt to get some sleep, but the ranger would not be quieted so easily.

"Hey goat herder, you illiterate *******! I'm talking to you!" The ranger wrenched a rock from the poorly constructed cell wall and chucked it at the motionless guard, knocking him senseless and perhaps fatally wounding him. The man's screams echoed through the halls, and Mordikai found himself hoping that he was dead. The ranger shouted some more, though no one heard him, until he realized he heard muffled voices from a nearby room. He stopped and listened.

"You should have known not to trust my word of mouth.

The voice dropped and he heard only a faint voice that he could no longer understand. Mordikai grew impatient and began to scream at the voice, asking what was happening.

Rrgh! I can't think straight with that yelling."

The angry voice muttered some more unintelligible words, then footsteps began to approach the room. Maximus rounded the bend, and as Mordikai recognized the traitor, he screamed aloud.

"Hey! I know you, you backstabber! You had better hope I don't get free or else--"

He was interrupted by a magic arrow striking him in the heart. The ranger fell to the ground and, breathing heavily, looked up at his assailant, who was preparing another projectile. He fired, and again it sailed true. Mordikai passed out from the pain.

"Finally, some peace and quiet," muttered the mage as he returned to the trial room and prepared the next trial, leaving the poor ranger to lick his wounds. Hope seemed scarce for all.

Shadowcaster:

You wake up in an enormous circular room. A bright light at the center of the room fills the room bright with light. It nearly hurts the eyes. A vicious lion is tied to a string to a large post in the middle of the room. It is only a few feet away from you, pulling as hard as it can.

RSF: "Wake up. See this lion? It hasn't eaten in weeks. So it will tear you to shreds if you aren't careful. You're job is to kill the lion. Oh here's a sword to help you kill it. Clearly a test of will no doubt. Perhaps next time you should create a ruckus. Maybe you won't get a test that's completely impossible to achieve."

RSF picks up a sword. It appears to be your sword. He throws it towards the middle of the room. It's clearly too far to reach without getting chewed up by the lion. RSF walks away leaving you there lying on the floor, still in pain from the magic missiles.

Mordikai slowly stands as the room stops spinning, then glances at the lion that is slowly wearing away at the rope. He watches, dumbfounded, as the animal tears the rope almost in two, then rears back to attack him, surely breaking the rope at this charge. The lion begins running, and Mordikai quickly casts pacifism on the beast. It is now unable to attack. He then sprints toward the sword and grabs it, then hustles to where the lion peacefully awaits and stabs it straight through, killing it instantly.

"Heh, nothing's impossible." mutters the cocky ranger.

The two of you teleported to the next trial.

RSF: "I started you off with one of the hardest trials cause I was mad at you. Let's go to the one that we would have started with."

You see Sephiroth in a cage hanging from the ceiling. It is hanging directly above a giant boiling pot of water.

Sephiroth: "Get me out of here quick. The bottom of this thing is getting really hot."

RSF: "Relax. Have faith in you friend Shadowcaster. There are three levers here. One of them will do nothing. One of them will lower the cage slowly. The other will swing the cage to the side so that it is completely out of the way of the boiling pot."

Mordikai looked panickedly up at his friend, then at Maximus, hoping to get some semblance of a hint from the mage. Maximus watched on with no expression, providing no hint for the ranger to follow.

"Easier, yeah right," the ranger mumbled.

Then he looked into his friend's eyes. Sephiroth looked unnerved and anxious. He would have to gain his friend's complete trust.

"Sephiroth, don't worry. I won't let you down."

He glanced down at the levers, then back up at his friend, who still seemed nervous.

"We've been through worse, haven't we. Remember the orc raid?"

With that, the dwarf's solemn expression changed into a knowledgable smile and he no longer seemed afraid.

"Which one will you pull, Mordikai?"

"Which do you think I should pull?"

Then both friend's eyes lit up for a split second and they said in unison, "The middle one!" Mordikai dashed forward and pulled the lever down hard.

Mordikai was getting frustrated, and he began to flare his temper. Sephiroth watched in pain from the cage, then shouted at his friend.

"Mordikai. We are both left-handed, right?"

The ranger stopped and calmed himself.

"Yeah..."

"So pull the left one."

Mordikai slowly approached the levers, then looked up at the dwarf one more time. On the edge of his eyes hid a smile, and Mordikai quickly pulled the right lever instead of the left, hoping that his impatience wouldn't cost him.

RSF: "Okay, you can take his place."

The cage swings over out of the way of the pot of water and slowly lands on the ground beside it. RSF then switches Sephiroth and Mordikai. RSF chuckles.

RSF: "You enjoy being in the cage? Well it seems that you won this trial. Easier than you had expected. Even though you pulled the levers one by one, and the cage started lowering after you pulled the second, by that time you know what the last lever is. The one that will swing the cage out of the way and so you pull it. You could have done it much sooner by just pulling all of the levers at once, but this was more of a lesson than test. However, you requested to take the place of Sephiroth, so he will be carrying out the next trial while you sit here in the cage. You have to learn to live with the decisions that you make. Oh yeah, your sword. I told you that you could hold on to that for a while."

RSF tosses the sword onto the ground next to Mordikai and leaves the room through an open door into the next room.

Sephiroth:

RSF: "Well you're friend did a nice job with this test. I thought he would never do it. Especially when the trial went wrong and the lion chewed through the rope. This time a metal chain has been anchored directly into that huge wooden pole. So it shouldn't be able to get loose from the chain."

A few moments of silence pass. The lion paces back and forth and lets out a roar.

RSF: "I fed him, so it might not be as angry as before, but who knows?"

A few more moments of silence pass and you ask him what he's supposed to do.

RSF: "Kill the lion. Don't just stand here and do nothing."

"What hell can I do with this sword? I WANT MY AXE back!"

The lions seems a bit confused, he was recently hungry, but now he isn't anymore, and his anger has passed away for a few moments. But know, he sees a dwarf pointing a sword to him, in a menacing position. It is not a situation to stay calm.

Sephiroth walks around the pole to try to measure the chain lenght(size?!).

"About 3 meters. My arm plus the sword have about 1.3 meters, so I shall be safe 4 meters from the pole. He probably can't break the chain without a few tries, so I have to make it fast."

Sephiroth hides the sword from the lion, sits far from it and without looking to the lion, keeps the position.

"I will wait here a few moments, until it calms down a bit, so I can approach him seeming less menacing."

Vadskye wakes up in his cell.

Vadskye: "How dare he call me naive!  I did that on purpose!I took a  bit of that sword to use as a lockpick."

Vadskye watched the guard's routine.  He was bored, so he was taking longer rounds.  There were soon about ten seconds that the guard could not see the cell Vadskye was in.  That was plenty.  Vadskye moved closer to the lock.  On the next round, he picked the lock, holding the door closed to be unnoticable.  On the next round, Vadskye crept out smacked the guard in the head from behind.  He then stuck the broken dagger piece in his heart.  After taking the guard's keys, Vadskye threw the guard in the cell and locked it.  Vadskye checked the keys he had stolen.  Unfortunately, they were all the same.  Had RSF expected him to escape?  No time to wonder about that now.  Vadskye had to get to RSF.  Another lockpick and a weapon would be nice too.

RSF takes casts a magic missile aimed for your hands. He teleports the sword to an unknown location and then warps in your axe. Like he did for your friend, he tosses it into the center of the room.

Vadskye:

Still unsure of whether or not RSF knew you would pull this stunt, you go to seek him out anyway. As you go down the hallway, you are sure to stay hidden. Two guards are coming your way.

Mordikai:
You can see into the room that Sephiroth is in. You recognize the trial that RSF had given to you. The cage has a small door on one of the sides, but it appears that it is being held in place with a padlock.

Vadskye cursed and stepped off into a nearby side corridor, planning to come up behind them and take their weapons.  It worked as planned up to a point; Vadskye managed to nail one guard with a strong kick to the head, but the other one turned around when he saw his mate fall.  Vadskye quickly grabbed the fallen guard's dagger, not realizing at the time that a typical guard didn't carry daggers.  Moving quickly (he usually did), Vadskye dodged a clumsy slash and drove his dagger in true.  Having disposed of the one guard, Vadskye turned to the other and quickly stabbed him.  Moving forward, Vadskye came across a map.  He traced the route to RSF's private quarters in his mind and continued.  After only a few more guard encounters, all of which were ended quickly and permanently, Vadskye came to the right room.  He opened the door quietly and saw what appeared to be RSF sleeping.  Vadskye jumped out and stabbed the figure in the bad, but the dagger passed through it.  Suddenly, the real RSF appeared next to him.

RSF: "Your raw talent is incredible. However you are not perceptive. You cannot detect a trap when you see one. I hoped you liked my illusionary guards. They even feel real when you bash their heads in. Come see."

The two teleport into the corridor.

RSF: "Touch the guard."

Vadskye bends over cautiously to touch the guard and it vanishes.

RSF: "And even that dagger is fake too."

Vadskye pulls out the dagger and watches it disapeer straight out of his hand.

RSF: "I think you'll find most of these guards are just illusions. They can seem pretty threatening, but in reality, they are harmless. Take this guard right here."

A guard appears out of thin air.

RSF: "It's harmless. Give it a nice kick to the head."

Vadskye kicks the man in the head, knocking him to the ground. After a few seconds the man vanishes.

RSF: "Felt real didn't it? You will soon learn that in this world magic is powerful. Magic is very deceptive. Magic is very powerful. You must never trust that something is a reality and you must never trust that something is an illusion either. You must see the possible threat, but at the same time not be over-cautious. Ultimately, your goal must always be achieved."

RSF: "Let's move on to the next trial."

The two of you teleport into the room with the boiling pot of water. Mordikai is lying in the cage asleep.

RSF: "You're job is to pick the lock and keep Mordikai asleep. When you picked the lock on your own cell, half the dungeon could hear you."

RSF teleports leaving Vadskye alone with Mordikai.

Pellagasth:

RSF: "You are within the gardens of my estate. The rest of the party tried to kill me when I took Vadskye's artifact. They are in my dungeon. You are to stay here. You have two choices, either you will work for me or you will join them in the dungeons. Either way, you will undergo some trials to judge your talent and to polish your skills a bit so you don't get killed. What do you wish to do? Will you work for me? Or will you refuse and be locked up in my dungeons?

He thanks the stars that he has his fingernail.  Poking around gently, Vadskye finds the opening mechanism.  Slowly, he began to turn it around so that it would open.  Suddenly, Vadskye realized that there was probably a trap, some kind of loud noise when the lock opened.  Turning around, Vadskye took the pillow from underneath Morkikai's head and put it over his ears.  Then, assured that Mordikai would not wake up without a very loud noise, Vadskye turned again and finished opening the lock.  Then...

Dark Prayers.....

Asmo looked up at the dark house. Though it was morning the house still gave the appearance of being shrouded in night. A place he could like if only he had not come in the present circumstances.
His dark prayers had led him to this house, he the last priest of She. Only an acolyte really, but with the others all dead he was High Priest now, and felt the touch of his Goddess in his mind.
He remembered again.......

A stranger had come to the temple, ringing the bell of audience. Brother Rahvin spoke to him first, bowing from the waist and escorting him to the High Priests Court. I and two other acolytes had followed in curiosity. The stranger was a mage, even we with our fledgling magic could sense the gift in him. Following behind we heard him greet the High Priest and make his demand.
'You will serve me priest or you will die'.
I expected to see the mage seared from the inside out, his bones becoming molten metal, but instead the High Priest gaped at him.
'How have you shielded my power mage! No one can sever my connection to She!'
The mage just smiled and said 'I take it that's a no?'
Instantly he opened a vortex, out of which poured goblins, screeching and jabbering. They fell upon the High Priest and the robed attendants, skewering them before they could even draw weapons.
Fleeing from the room I tripped my fellow acolytes, and ran free as they were slaughtered. She would forgive me, She told me so Herself.
Out of the temple I ran, into the woods behind it, hearing the screams of my fellows as they died until finally there was silence.
I waited a full day before I went back. Everywhere there were bodies, and bits of bodies. Never before was I squeamish when I was given the honour of holding the knife during Sacrifice, but this waste sickened me. Climbing to the High Priests Court I found it empty. The goblins must have eaten everyone, or else it wad the mages work. Ascending the dais I moved behind the throne. It was still there. The Black Mace, supposedly forged by Herself, it was an artifact of great power in the hands of the High Priest. In my hands......it might kill me just to touch it. I reached out and my fingers closed around the hilt, I wasn't dead.
'ASMO'
I was bathed in rapture. 'My Goddess'
'ASMO. MY SON. MY LAST SON. IF YOU WOULD SERVE ME STILL YOU MUST FIND WHO HAS SLAUGHTERED MY CHILDREN AND BRING HIM MY JUSTICE!'
'It was a mage Mistress. I know not his name!'
'THEN YOU WILL FIND HIM. AND FIND OUT WHY MY PRIESTS ARE DEAD. DO NOT FAIL'
'But Mistress. I am but an acolyte. My training is incomplete, I know only the most simple healings, and none of your Holy weapons!'
'DO NOT FEAR MY SON. YOU WILL BE PROVIDED FOR.'

Which is how I found myself travelling the land. Searching for a tale of a wizard who fought with goblins that he summoned from the air.
Half mad but not caring. Not caring but staring. Staring at the black house in the morning.
Giggling softly to myself I slip over the walls and make my way to the black house.
Still giggling.
