They're drowning the dogs in barrels filled with bleach at the live food markets suspected of transmitting sars.

I've had pets my entire life. And yeah they aren't human beings, but I'll be damned for anyone to prove they don't have souls that experience and have love, feelings and emotions just like we do.

The pictures make me sad

I don't know how ppl can do this to poor, innocent dogs.

I saw something similar to this on Norwegian television. They gave small, cute pigs electric shocks to make them go forward.

I think there is a lot of animal cruelty going on that we don't know.

Thats messed up.

Why are they killing the dogs by drowning them?  I always thought that when they put down animals they inject them with something.

2Melissa_X: Totally agree with you. I like animals (and nature in general) very much, I myself own a beautiful cat (his name is Chizhik - sounds strange in English doesn't it?)... It's very sad to see such things... But we live in an industrial world where even the life of a human being costs almost nothing, leave alone pets...

I very much agree with you, Melissa, but sadly this is nothing in comparison to whatīs done to millions of American and European poultry, pigs and cattle every day.

And prayer will not change anything, as long as we people prefer to buy cheap mass-produced meat of tortured animals, rather than more expensive meat of farm animals.

People are messed up in the head & some dont think animals have feelings & think it's quite amusing watching them drown & in fear & hurting etc.
This is a cold blooded world & once you step out of your home, you have to deal with it.
orless everyone tomorrow decides to love all living thangs in this world, the cruelity wont stop, & no one can do nothing about it.

Sad But Necessary

Everyone,

These animals are being disposed of through sterile techniques. When looking at the battlegrounds of a war we sometimes must remind ourselves of the cost for such a war. The human race has begun to wage war against an insidiously new and deadly disease. We must ask ourselves, "What price are we willing to pay to keep the lives of our loved ones safe?" Is it any less horrifying to look upon pictures of this nature? A sobering "No" is my response. It's a very sad thing to watch, however this is only one aspect of the ongoing struggle to save millions of lives every day.

When confronted with a catastrophic disease such as SARS we must all search ourselves for the answer.

We must ask:

1. What will happen to my family, friends, and neighbors if I do not act?

2. What will happen if I fight this disease on it's native terrain? What if we simply killed everyone infected? What then?

3. Will that stop the disease or will we become that which we are trying to combat, adding to the massgraves caused by SARS?

4. Am I to be human? How can I show my compassion?

5. How can I learn more about this new devastating sickness? To what extent do I need to educate myself and others on the dangers of encountering this very real threat to all our lives?

I ask myself questions like that and I remain certain that education is the key to combatting an illness of such destructive magnitude. In an effort to further the cause for fighting SARS I shall post some helpful information for everyone to read. If anyone would like to bypass this post and go directly to the cdc website then here is the link:
cdc.gov

What is SARS? SARS is severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is also known as viral respiratory illness syndrome caused by a coronavirus. Because of this it is also referred to as SARS-CoV. It was first discovered in Asia in February 2003. In over a few month's time it spread to 24 countries around the world in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. 774 people have been killed due to the illness as of yesterday.

On the cdc website you can read all about this new disease. I will copy what they say about how it's spread and some other pertanent information.

(copied from the website)
The main way that it seems to spread is by close person-to-person contact. The virus that causes SARS is thought to be transmitted most readily by respiratory droplets(droplet spread) produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Droplet spread can happen when droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled a short distance(generally up to 3 feet) through the air and deposited on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes of persons who are nearby. The virus also can spread when a person touches a surface or object contaminated with the infectious droplets and then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eyes. In addition, it is possible that the SARS virus might be spread more broadly through the air(airborne spread) or by other ways that are not now known.
(copied from the website)

The symptomes of SARS are as follows:
1. patient begins with high fever
2. secondary sypmtoms include headache, discomfort, and body aches
3. after 2-7 days patient may develop a dry cough
4. most patients develop pneumonia

As you can see this disease is an insidious-natured illness because it presents itself with flu-like or common cold symptoms. Because it is a coronavirus this might explain why its victims present with such common symptoms. While masking its true nature it leads people to think they simply have a cold or the flu. This is not the case because the patient has an end result of pneumonia. For anyone who does not already know there many different types of pnuemonia. Pneumonia is usually characterized by a lower respiratory tract infection inside lungs that can cause severe tissue scarring  in the alveoli and the pooling of fluids in the lungs thus eventually drowning the victims in their own fluids. Pneumonia is most lethal to anyone with a history of airway complications, or the very young, and the very old as these are people whose lungs are not strong enough to combat the illness. In those who have lungs strong enough to survive the illness it leaves behind  severe tissue scarring that can cause problems with any future respiratory illnesses. In other words you may live through SARS only to encounter greater problems later from something as common as a cold or the true influenza virus(the flu).As you can also see this virus may be airborne. Airborne contagions are the most deadly of all and have historically killed the most people.

Once again those pictures are sad but I say necessary to save the lives of countless others. The best way to combat this deadly new threat is to educate yourselves with the facts. Adversity can only be overcome through the sharing of information and creative enginuity.

Once again here is the website: cdc.gov

If the dogs are at a "live food market," they were going to be killed anyway.  The difference here is that they will not be eaten after slaughter; they will be sterilized and disposed of as biohazardous waste.

However, I personally don't see why the authorities (in whichever country -- China?) don't use a more humane way of killing the animals, then sterilizing the carcasses.  Drowning in bleach is awful.  Is there some reason they cannot dunk the dogs in bleach *after* they're dead?

Then again, if this is China, there are considerably larger issues to pick at than suffering dogs.

They could put the dogs down the same way a vet would, with an injection. And a blow to the head, if done correctly, doesn't have to cause any external bleeding. Seems like they're just trying to sort out this situation in the most painful manner they can think of.

Aren't these the same people that were part of the cat slaughter, for the same reason? Again, i understand why they need to do it, and i don't think it's wrong, but they sure as hell didn't seem to mind having blood splattered all over the place when they did that.

I support organizations that send people in undercover to document everything and then we do mail and letter campaigns to government officials in the US and in the country where its happening.

Unfortunately in other countries the best you can do is economic impact. Its very hard to do that to China, or Korea where animal mistreatment to dogs and cats is the most brutal because it seems like everything we have in the US has Made In China on it these day. You'd have to stop buying a huge amount of things we all depend on from being mfrd by cheap chinese slave labor factories.

So the letters will continue and continue as will the public awareness campaign. But outside the US you can't do much more than that action wise.

Dingo, I wrote just two sentences. Shouldnīt be too much asked to read both before answering, IMvHO.

Melissa,

I think thatīs a bit hypocritical, because thereīs enough lack of public awareness about the situation inside the US (most european countries arenīt any better, of course) to deal with.

Donīt get me wrong, of course itīs terrible what theyīre doing to the dogs, but - have you ever seen how for example Kentucky Fried Chickens have grown up?

Considering how Chinaīs dictatorship treats its citizens, its humans, I find it hard to expect them to have highstanding animal ethics.
We on the other hand live in democratic countries, where human rights are accepted by 95+% of the population, and we hardly to any better, just because the mass tortured beings are of a different species.

Melissa_X Open Your Eyes!

We're talking about China! In this country human slavery is still legal! The majority of it's people are truly oppressed! This is not the kind oppresion you hear about in the United States when an ethnic minority starts screaming: "The man is puttin me down!" This is the real-deal oppression where if you don't do what they say then you are imprisoned or sent to work in a factory for mere pennies on the dollar. This is a country that actually makes laws that decide how many babies you can have and then what sex is allowed. It is illegal to have too many girls. Some people actually sell everything they own and come to the U.S. after finding out they're having an illegal baby girl before it is born. I can't believe you're going to sit here and complain about dogs and cats being slaughtered in an effort to fight a deadly disease while ignoring things like:

1. Non-existant civil rights legislature

2. A country that has abolished all religion(in communism all people are equal)

3. Dictatorship

4. Nuclear capable hostilities towards democratic nations

Before you go carryining on about these poor animals think about how many people were killed in Tienemen Square for peacefully protesting. Think about the tanks that crushed the protestors because they simply disagreed with the government.

I don't think these poor animals are being treated worse than the civilians in Iraq (mini-disclaimer: I am not trying to be political). I do not think those poor animals live a better life than the thousands of people who are starving to death in Africa.

How can you expect us -human beings- to care about animals whereas we do not give a chite about our kind?

indeed.

I dont like this handling of animals more then you do but id rather see economic help to starving people in africa rather then have energy focused on helping dogs in china.. who prolly would been eaten anyway if it wasnt for that they had SARS.
