WoG really is a new life for Heroes 3

First I'd like to thank the mod team, WoG kicks ass! And I haven't even had a chance to get into the scripting yet.

When Heroes 4 came out, there were things I liked about it, and things I didn't like about it. It wasn't the usual extention of a great game that the previous heroes was. And even thinking about that, HOMM3 was lacking some things that were great in heroes 2.

In my opinion, WoG is bringing the 3 games together into what HOMM4 should have been.

Now I have a question, I've often wondered what all is involved with mods as sophisticated as this one?

Is there alot of hex editing? Just decoding dat files and changing them?

I agree

I just spottet WOG and this community 2weeks ago. Before I played HOMM 2+3 last 3 or 4 years, until my computer burnt. (or was it my right wrist - whatever)

I tried HOMM 4 - crap! Tried all other games like Age of Wonders - same sh*t.

I tried WOG - GREAT! Greater ! The Greatest! That should have been HOMM4!

Question : can I send some money to support WOG ?

I just uploaded 2 older maps (one wogified) from me to Maphaven - any *positive* comments are welcome.

So long

Yeah I agree, someone from the mod team needs to throw some paypal linkage up somewhere we can find it.

And as far as heroes 4 sucking, I don't think it sucked so much as I think that it was an entirely different game "based loosly on" the heroes series. The one thing I really liked about it was having your hero in the battle field and their skills/artifacts REALLY having a significant impact other than increasing the power of the rest of the army.

Well, in HoMM2 and 3, Estates affects your economy and not your army

AFAIK mostly disassembling the exe and editing it, plus editing the resource files to suit the new creatures etc.

Slava does most of the actual programming, although the new dialogue boxes are created by Alexander, another team member.

From what Slava has told us, the programming involves a combination of hex editing of the exe and new code written in C++. As we don't have access to the source code, it's often difficult to make changes, although Slava has been pretty amazing at identifying different parts of the code in a hex editor and then finding ways to let us control it through ERM. In some cases, I think he's "moved" sections of the code (internal tables) so that he could add to them. Resource files are also changed and in most cases I think these can be extracted and edited. New creatures have to have their animations "packed" with the appropriate tool, and creature definitions added to the right file. For creatures with special abilities, there's also some more work to do I think.

Many team members have contributed to the ERM script writing, ideas, text and testing. And we've had a number of artists working on graphics (new ones or modifying others). Documentation has been worked on by several team members.

We're glad you're enjoying WoG! We're still hard at work on 3.58 (just don't ask when it will be done).

Thank you for the thought, but the team isn't accepting donations. Although the changes are extensive, this is still a "mod" and the original game isn't our property (it now belongs to Ubisoft) so we can't charge money for WoG nor accept donations. Also, we wanted WoG to be free (to owners of H3 SoD and H3 Complete).

You may be happy to know that there will be extended support for custom maps using WoGify scripts in 3.58. You will be able to save the script options you want used in your map to a file and then specify that they will be loaded when the map is played (through a simple ERM command).
