Max Level
I achieved Level 74 after I defeated Aine and her 5140 Ancient Behemoths in a single scenario of HoMM3.

I donīt know how long you played this map, but there are many xl-maps with underground made by mapmakers, with a good storyline and where you have to defeat legions of azure dragons or any other high-level units (and not only one time...i promise  ). So you earn millions of exp.points several times, but i think iīve never reached more than level 50 or so.....

Yeah, but the maximum for this is 15% (expert learning)...that donīt really matters at the end....

In HOMM3 AB, I created a map especially to test that (with the maximum of libraries and trees of knowledge) and I reached lvl 88 with more than 1 billion in exp and 99 in each skill (with mana vortex and expert intelligence, it gives 3960 mana points  ).
If you try to increase your primary skills above 99, it falls down to 1 after several tries.

If neither hero flees or surrenders then apart from the defeated army exp, the winner gets 500 for opposing hero, right?

But still didnīt understand how that "multiplier function" of the opponent player could work...???

There Is No Level Limit
In Heroes3 there is no level limit unless you specify it in the map editor prior to playing the game. I've gotten Malekith up to 108th lv. The only limit is the stats. All stats stop at 99.

Sorry consis, but that isnīt true...iīve madesome tests about that..the results you can read here in the "Best hero ever" thread....
But this also could probably depend on the version one have....

Seconded. The game (I'm referring to v.3 complete) works as intended till level 74. Getting past the threshold for level 75 takes you straight to level 88, i.e. you clear 14 levels at once (or more precisely, one immediately after another - with corresponding stat increases; assuming you're not up against the 99 stat limit). Trying to move beyond level 88 took me (repeatedly, and in different settings) to level 0 and negative experience levels, hence I don't believe anything higher than level 88 is possible...
Edit: Just checked this in HoTA. There the maximum level is 74 and the game even tells you that you have reached the maximum level of experience allowed (even though I placed no restrictions in the test map). It's still possible to go past this, however (i.e. the limit doesn't seem strictly enforced)... E.g. I managed to get to level zero and negative experience levels (after level 74) using an altar of sacrifice (sacrificing hundreds of thousands of azure dragons, so the "bug" seems unlikely to affect real game play, arguably).
