I agree,

so what could we do about it?

so what could we do about it?
for example, we could assume that a horseman stack could have less mounts than needed.
========

the system for calculating movement speed of the stack would be as follows:

imagine a group of units, a mix of mounted knights and unmounted knights, moving in some direction. some of them have advanced more in that direction and some are left a little behind.

if the movement speed of mounted knights is greater than the movement speed of unmounted knights (feels natural imho), there are mounted knights in the front and unmounted knights in the back of the group.

now, the frontmost mounted knight dismounts and sends his horse to pick up the last unmounted knight (let's call it knightZ).

when the horse has reached knightZ in the back of the group, knightZ mounts and thus gains speed.

as the fromtmost mounted knights send their horses to the back of the group, the now mounted knightZ becomes the frontmost mounted knight in the group. then knightZ dismounts and sends his horse to pick up the last knight in the group.

doing so, knightZ looses speed, and as the last knights get mounts form the front, knightZ becomes the last knight in the group and gets a mount, and soon becomes the first knight in the group as described.
========

now, the question is, how far ahead should the first knight be from the last knight when it's most practical to send his horse back?

i guess it depends on the distance the group has to move, and on the number of mounted knights vs the number of unmounted knights (or in other words, the number of horses vs the number of knights).

and i think that it is possible to calculate how much ahead the first knight should be from the last knight, so that their movement speed is optimal.
========

or maybe the mounted knights should just travel all the distance all at once and then send their mounts back to the unmounted knights.

for example:

if movement speed of a mounted knight is 10 hex and movement speed of an unmounted knight is 5 hex, and there are 1 mount and 2 knights in the stack:

mounted knight1 moves 6 hex (6 hex jousting bonus).
unmounted knight2 moves 3 hex.

mount moves back 2 hex.
unmounted knight2 moves 1 hex.

unmounted knight2 becomes mounted knight2.

mounted knight2 moves 2 hex (2 hex jousting bonus).

so total movement was 6 hex instead of 5 hex that is the speed of the unmounted knight.
========

in the previous example, knight1 was just standing in the destination, waiting for knight2 to catch up.

should the knights be mounted when they reach the target?

if it's just movement without an attack in the end, there's no real reason to demand that the knights should all be mounted when they reach the destination, thus giving them a movement boost.

assume the same group of two knights that share one mount, so that a knight can be unmounted when reaching the destination:

//knight1 2x+(1/3)x+x
//knight2 x+(1/3)x+2x
//mount 2x+(2/3)x+2x=10; x=2.143

mounted knight1 moves 4.286 hex.
unmounted knight2 moves 2.143 hex.

mount moves back 1.429 hex.
unmounted knight1 moves 0.714 hex.
unmounted knight2 moves 0.714 hex.

unmounted knight2 becomes mounted knight2.

unmounted knight1 moves 2.143 hex.
mounted knight2 moves 4.286 hex.

total movement in that case is 7.143 hex, a considerable advancement compared to the previous example.
========

so, maybe the two knights and the mount could even attack a stack that is 7 hex away, but they would have the jousting bonus of about 4.3 hex for just one knight.

in previous example (distance 6 hex) the total jousing bonus was 8. so there would be a jousting bonus optimum at some distance. or maybe not, because at distance 4 hex the total jousting bonus of the two knights would still be 8.
========

well, imagine that confusion and mounts moving back and forth on the battlefield.

huh, what?

my previous post was just making fun of an idea. and it seems that i wasn't even sucessful:

1. no one told me that my post was idiotic.
2. it killed a good discussion. it must have been a bad idea to post all those calculations.

and instead of a penalty i received a quality point..

maybe some mod was sarcastic..
