Baldur's Gate Diaries

I have created this thread so that I can continually post diary logs of my adventures in my new campaign. My daughter was born about three weeks ago and my wife is about to go back to work leaving me with a 4 year old, 5 year old, and a 3 week old. Because of this I have decided to stick with games that I can play one-handed and have a much needed pause feature. I've been looking forward to replaying the old Baldur's Gate 1&2 and their expansions for some time but I needed a reason to do it. Because of all the running around and increased responsibility I will now have tending to my kids while my wife works, I have decided to go back and start a brand new campaign.

In this thread I shall be inputting diary entries from my party's adventures. I decided to start a single player campaign so that I could write about my experiences with all the npc's that the Forgotten Realms campaign has to offer. I especially look forward to having Sarevok in my party in the second Baldur's Gate.

This thread may cause my post count to decrease because I will be ignoring the penalties for posts made back to back by the same user. I'm simply going to continue posting diary entries regardless of responses. Because of this I welcome all spammers to spam away in this thread at your liesure. Your much needed spam will allow me to keep this thread going without penalty.

Anyone else who is interested in posting any of their own Baldur's Gate diary entries is more than welcome to contribute to those I will be posting. I look forward to all other campaign stories as it is always nice to read of the many different paths people take in their own unique adventures.

The main character I have decided to go with as the protagonist is a general mage named, Consis.

His alignment is Neutral Good. I chose his robe colors to be brown with green rims. His hair is brown also and his skin is white.(This may change depending on how I decide to roleplay this character)

Disclaimer
This is merely my attempt to entertain readers with my own experiences in playing through the Baldur's Gate games. My roleplaying path is one of many that can be chosen for this game. I hope the readers look upon these diaries with inspiration and intrigue for my specified path of choice. My love and thanks goes out to the many readers who might enjoy what little I have to write. I would also like to thank the creators of the Baldur's Gate games. It is to them that I owe my inspiration and to them that I owe a great deal of thanks for creating such a wonderful story and game to play. Thankyou

Baldur's Gate
Diary entry-01:

Dear diary,

The Road Ahead

My father was killed today. After a long and tedious day of running errands for the keep's usual populace, I was summoned to meet my father, Gorion, at the citadel's steps.

Upon arriving he insisted we hurry along without delay. I spoke to Imoen shortly before the meeting and she hinted at some important business of his to attend to at a shortstop hotel called, Friendly Arms Inn. Apparently she had snuck into his study the night before and secretly looked over a letter on his desk.

I asked and asked for the reason or what supplies to take with us but he would have none of it. After a quick exit from the city night began to fall. Along the road we were met by a strange group of ruffians. Their leader demanded that I be handed over to them or Gorion would be hurt. Once he adamantly refused they attacked him all at once! He screamed to me that I should flee and it was too late for him.

At first I stood there because I wondered who he could possibly be afraid of but when I saw the ogre hit him with that spiked club I panicked and ran as he instructed me to do. I ran and ran until I dropped to my knees out of breath.

The trees began to creep closer to me under the darkened night sky. I gasped for air as I heard a sound coming from the bushes nearby. I didn't know who it was and so I screamed, "Stay away or else!" Out of the bushes crept a cautious little girl in a purple cloak and hood.

I nearly passed out from being so scared. I said, "What are you doing here!" She explained how she followed us out of Candlekeep along the road for some time before seeing the strangers ahead. She hid and watched as my father was brutally murdered. She said she didn't even look to see who they were and ran after me to make sure she didn't lose sight of me.

I now find myself in shock as Imoen tries to comfort me. I don't know what to think or why those briggands did what they did! Both she and I have lived within the secure walls of the Candlekeep sanctuary from the time my memories start as a little boy. We now find ourselves outsiders with no usable means of return to our home within the city.

After discussing it over we have decided to carry out my father's last wishes and look to meet these friends of his at the Friendly Arms Inn hotel.

We returned to where he died and I buried my only father today. He fought to save my life. May God rest his soul. Perhaps someday I will avenge his death and find the identity of his attackers but for now I have a new family to look after. Imoen needs me and I shall do my best to look after her. We are all either of us have left in this world.

Arrival At Nashkel

Baldur's Gate
Diary log entry-02:

Dear diary,

It's been a long trip to Nashkel. The road behind was intently fortuitous. Imoen and I had originally decided to stay the course as we met the friends of my father at the Friendly Arms Inn.

Khalid and Jaheira were their names. My first impression was to laugh because we, both Imoen and I, noticed they had a strange relationship. Although they didn't say it, we believe the two were married. They acted more like a couple of odd sorts. The strikingly beautiful Jaheira would constantly interrupt Khalid while he was talking. He would simply stutter off into silence and lower his head a bit. She was a bit overbearing but he didn't seem to mind. He most definately loved her and she seemed the type that would be hard pressed to find a man that would allow such interruptions. That is to say, who could be in love with such a strong-willed woman? Ah well, to each their own. I'm happy if they're happy.

The two did well among the group considering the company we picked up along the way. Along the way we met two very strange companions indeed. There was a magician named, Xzar, and a shorter fellow by the name of Montaron.

The little fellow gave us the creeps but Xzar counteracted it with a bit of off-the-wall humor. Xzar was constantly talking to himself. Imoen and I couldn't help but laugh and giggle at the things he would say. Something about dragons and rabbit's feet, ha ha ha! Regardless of their strangeness the group wasn't a bit sad to see them go. They kept hounding us to visit Nashkel immediately and to tell you the truth they were starting to get on my nerves. They wouldn't shut up about it!

Well, while we were visiting the ankheg farm just north of the Inn we met a man of immovable character. He told us he was a holy knight on a quest to purge the land of worldly evils.

He said his name was Ajantis. He spoke with charm and perfected manners. I believe Imoen was quite taken by him. I think he would be a great catch for her but he seems to be very akin to following the rules while she likes to make her own.

Shortly after we accepted Ajantis's companionship he confronted Xzar with some sort of 'character flaw', as he called it. Xzar seemed very much afraid of him and started to cry in fear. I noticed his companion, the shorter fellow, had rolled his eyes at the incident. I suppose he was more annoyed at Xzar's reaction than the paladin's insults on his friend. It seemed appropriate because Xzar started begging Montaron to read him a bedtime story in the middle of the ankheg fields in broad daylight! The rest of the party turned and gave each other a very puzzled look as they both sat down and Montaron started telling him his favorite story. As Xzar cried on his shoulder we couldn't help but start to giggle. Ajantis was unchanged. He was convinced of the deranged man's character disposition.

Well, shortly after the storytelling incident our light mood was changed to one of confusion and sorrow. We had left the strange couple to their stories when suddenly we heard the little halfling laughing histerically. We ran to where they were sitting and saw Montaron standing by a large gaping hole in the ground. It appeared that Xzar was snatched by an ankheg and pulled underground. As I recall Montaron's exact words were, "And the mad wizard falls! Saves me the trouble", as he continued to laugh. We tried asking if we should go after his friend but he just kept laughing and besides, Ajantis wasn't likely to help. We weren't exactly strong enough to take on an entire hive and the local authorities had already given a set number of ankhegs we were allowed to kill. Seeing as we had already met the maximum number of allowed kills we decided to head off leaving the little fellow lying on the ground in a fit of laughter. Like I said, we weren't sad to see them go.

From there we headed south and east through the Wood of Sharp Teeth. A bit more to the southeast we met her. We met the woman of my dreams. Diary, let me tell you about this woman. She is stronger than any man. Her heart is pure wrought iron and she takes no insults. Behind her words lies the talent and skill of a warrior. Her eyes are filled with power of character, determination of will, and the courage of the brave. Her name is Sharteel.

Upon our encounter with her she immediately laughed out loud at the entire group.  We all sort of looked at each other confusingly and approached her with caution. She stood there in a suit of well-made armor, shield at her feet and sword strapped to her back. Her arms were crossed and her wicked smile broke through her battered war helmet.

When we asked her why she laughed she simply replied, "Men are pathetic." She continued, "Ho travellers! I challenge your best warrior to a duel. Keep your bedmaidens at bay while we duel for gold."

Jaheira scoffed, "You smell like a wild animal that needs taming! Who are you to call me a bedmaiden?"

Khalid, Imoen, and I stood there stunned as we waited to see what she would do. Ajantis said nothing. I looked over and noticed him standing there, mouth closed and glaring at her. He didn't blink nor move a muscle.

I looked back at Sharteel and asked what sort of competition she was talking about. She pledged her services if she lost and bid us pay her a gold token if she won.

When I looked over at Khalid, Jaheira put her arm forward, "Hold there Khalid. I forbid you from touching something so foul." Whereas I had been a student for most of my days under Gorion, I knew I wouldn't be a much of a challenge.

We all looked to Ajantis. He didn't budge. Sharteel stepped forward and drew her sword. Ajantis said nothing. He continued to stand and glare with a judgmental eye. Sharteel laughed and swung her sword at him. As he raised his shield to block her blow she quickly parried, pulled back, wedged her sword through his stirrups and unhinged the shield from its hand harnesses. At this point we all looked on wide-eyed as the female swordsman carried through with another swipe on the now shieldless Ajantis. He had underestimated her and was in full retreat keeping his head from the tip of her blade. As he tried to withdraw his sword she had anticipated the move and quickly stepped in to cease the withdrawal. But to her surprise he had anticipated the anticipation and lunged forward striking her hard and clean across the cheek with his gauntlet.

She was knocked down onto her rump and leaned forward to wipe the blood from her now lacerated upper lip. She looked at her own blood as if to revel in it. Ajantis stood abrasive, poised to strike again, while slowly unsheathing his sword. She stood with her sword and again charged for the offensive advantage. Through a volley of blows and parries she was able to pass her blade through an unyielding swing from the holy knight. As she did and went in for the blow he stood up straight and lowered his guard. She swung with all her might and landed the blade high on his breastplate. Her sword stopped abruptly and she took a step back as she noticed his armor glowing bright blue. He seized the opportunity and stepped forward grabbing her by the throat. He lifted her with one hand while choking her and threw her from his presence never once uttering a single word.

As she lay there, gasping and choking from his hold, Ajantis sheathed his weapon and the glow began to fade. Something happened between the two that the rest of us didn't understand. It was as if God himself stepped in and deflected her blade. Under any normal circumstances her sword would have penetrated the suit and more than likely have done serious damage to his chest and neck. A nonverbal duel to which skill was acknowledged and God had spoken.

We didn't know what to say. We all stood about in shock from what we saw when Sharteel spoke up, "As promised, you have my services should you so decide." I looked at Jaheira and then back at Imoen. I pulled Imoen aside and we talked it over. We decided that in light of the obvious skill Sharteel showed us that we should like to trade Sharteel for Jaheira.

We were caught offguard when Jaheira took it so well. The problem was, when she left she took her concubine with her. We actually liked Khalid but I suppose marriage is a much stronger comittment than friends.

On the way back to Beregost for some  much needed equipment repairs and supplies, we met a peculiar individual.

Her name is Viconia and I'm still not sure what to think of her. She seems to be able to heal us when needs be but I would be a fool to underestimate the presence of a dark elf in the group. It is very strange indeed that she is even able to walk in the sunlight. I have read many books profiling this race of underground elves. It is said that they worship the Spider Queen goddess called, Lolth. When we confronted her with this she replied that she no longer worshipped her and now followed the ways of a goddess called, Shar. I am unfamiliar with Shar. I shall have to remind myself to do my homework on her before fully trusting this drow into our group.

Upon arriving in Nashkel we were greeted with the usual bountyhunter that I have become accustomed to seeing. They don't seem to want to give up. Of the two taverns/inns in the city we opted for the Nashkel Inn. I'm still confused as to why I'm being hunted but Gorion is with me. In my heart he guides me through the long road just he did when he was alive. Imoen and I both miss him and we seem very good company for each other considering our shared predicament.

These Are My Words

Asmodean and everyone else,

In the game, you do have a diary that is prewritten for you as you play. Each log entry is dependent on what roleplaying path you choose along your adventure trail.

These diaries, that I write here, donot exist except as I write them. I play the game and then write the experience as I saw it.

Baldur's Gate, the game, story, and all of its components, are my inspirations. Perhaps one day I shall elevate my enthusiasm and support towards pushing these stories into a real live motion picture.....tis but a dream.

There is also a book entitled, Baldur's Gate, and written by Philip Athans. In the book the author writes a description of his own path. He played the game also, and decided to describe the story from his standpoint. Baldur's Gate seems to attract people with fantastic imaginations. When he played, he imagined a romance between his character and Jaheira. He tells of Khalid coming to an untimely demise at the hands(pseudopods rather) of a mustard jelly monster. He also picks up Xan and describes his sword wielding talents with great finesse, utilizing the one and only "Moonblade" sword. Xzar and Montaron get the boot in the Nashkel mines and I don't remember the other characters he takes into his group.

Damsel In Distress

Baldur's Gate
Log entry-03:

Dear diary,

Today we lost a beautiful soul but gained a great companion.

Shortly after our arrival in Nashkel to investigate the local iron-shortage crisis we met a man of great character. His name is Minsc. Although our first impression of him was less than admirable, we have come to value his friendship greatly. Imoen adors him and Ajantis carries a great deal of respect for the man. I can't say the same for Sharteel and Viconia, though, I'm not sure why. What's not to like about him?

Shortly after meeting with Berrun Ghastkill we came upon an unlikely hero proclaiming to be 'evil's greatest foe'. He was outside the city barracks looking for enlisted help while showing each possible candidate to a small rodent that looked like a hamster.

A guard would pass by and he would whisper something to the rodent before shaking his head and looking for the next oncomer.

We stopped to chat with the bald, but very well-built, Minsc. He begged us for a partnership in a quest to save his charge. He told us that they had been ambushed by a pack of angry giant dog-like monsters. He then reached into his pouch and pulled out the small rodent from before. He let the hamster sniff both myself and Ajantis. Imoen started giggling. He turned around, whispered something to it, and turned back around with a smile. Minsc sized up the group entirely, conferred with his pet hamster, and said, "There be safety in numbers and I am two or three atleast."

Ajantis sensed the man was telling us the truth and immediately interrupted him. He pledged his services without hesitation or a second thought.

Viconia acted as if Minsc was invisible. She kept staring at Sharteel, who seemed preoccupied with bartering for a better sword. As we could not afford to lose Ajantis I decided, as group leader, that we would all accompany Minsc on his journey to save a woman named, Dynaheir.

As we were leaving we passed by the armory. Sharteel was finishing up her business as Minsc walked up to her to inform her of our departure. She turned, looked him up and down, and laughed. She said, "You're a funny man, that's why I'm going to kill you last", and caught up with the rest of the group leaving Minsc a little confused.

Apparently, the gnoll's(as Minsc called them) stronghold was based far to the west. Our quest at the Nashkel mines was about half the distance to the southeast. I calmly rubbed my forehead with displeasure in being sidetracked from our main goal. Who could resist the call for the saving of a damsel in distress?

My Dream,

It was a long journey and during one night I dreamt of my father again. The difference was this dream was not like the others. As I watched him being cut down by the dark figure I had somehow come to be at ease with it. The image was no longer a fearful one. It seemed as though the blood that dripped from his lifeless body was a comforting scene to me. I awoke in a cold sweat and feared for my own sanity. What could I be thinking! How can I be so cold as to welcome bloodshed of any kind? Imoen was there for me. She kept me calm for the night. Together we sat, as dawn approached. It seemed the day was as comforting as my father. Just as he had been there for me when I needed him, so too, had this day come when I needed it.

The Gnoll Stronghold,

Upon arriving at the bridge from land to the fort, we were greeted by a pair of two over-sized half-ogres. They yelled from across the bridge, "You pay us toll or not get by!" I turned and looked at Imoen. She turned and looked at Sharteel. I approached Sharteel and said, "I think it's time to send out the diplomatic convoy." She laughed and started across the bridge. We could hear them threatening her and such for stepping on to it and having the nerve to walk across. We waited. We heard some battlecries and then screams and then all was silent. Sharteel came back across the bridge while cleaning her sword.

Once inside the fort we were met with a great deal of resistance and numbers. To be honest, I didn't use any of my magic. I didn't see the need for it. When we had our first encounter I was almost petrified with fear from the size of these dog-like creatures. They were barking, growling, and drool was oozing from their sharp teeth. But as I stood struck with terror my compatriots took the initiative and handled them with ease. Both Imoen and I agreed that I would not have survived without such excellent swordsmanship. We congratulated each other for a job well done in picking who to travel with.

However, our celebrations were cut short when we finally cut our way through to the holding pen and final resting place of Minsc's friend, Dynaheir. The beasts had either taken the fort from someone else or had constructed it themselves. There were large deeply dug pits, about twenty feet deep and twenty feet in diameter, with a single wooden plank that reached to the center from the edge. At the bottom of each pit were the mounds of chewed and mangled bodies of many people. Dynaheir was their latest victim and we found her atop the other rotting corpses. Silence befell the entire group except for Minsc. He changed in a way that I had never seen before. His eyes seemed to boil and his mouth began to drool like that of the beasts we fought. He picked up his sword with both hands and ran through the rest of the broken castle screaming and snarling that his charge would be avenged. We all stood in complete silence while listening to the victims of Minsc's rage through the hallowed castle walls. Ajantis stepped forward and motioned for us to fill the pits with dirt so as to give the dead their proper burial. I used a spell for moving the rock and mud and we let the dead lay as they fell, quiet for all time. Ajantis returned with Minsc on his shoulder. Minsc seemed almost asleep as he could barely move after his uncontrolled fit of rage. Viconia told the rest of us that Minsc would remember nothing during the time encompassing his cycle of anger. As we carried ourselves back to Nashkel Viconia told us of a great spirit of fury let down by the gods to punish anyone who has offended them. She said Minsc was a cursed man and that he would need our help now that his only duty was taken from him.

Without her to protect, his life meant nothing to him and Ajantis didn't want to see such a brave and courageous soul be taken from the land of the living. He promised that he would always be at his side to help him when needed.

So it was that we met a man named Minsc and his pet hamster. His only reason for living was taken from him and now we would try and mend the holes in his existence. Both Imoen and I agreed that even though he seemed a bit strange, he was a good man with a courageous heart of gold.

I'm just a little curious on how 'healthy' or 'beefed up' your character is. After all the design of the player is the first step and the most important one. A highly charismatic wizard will make friends easier than just a smart one.
Anyway interesting read. Makes me think that I'm still stuck in Baldur's city on part I near the end which I need to finish. Too bad my savedgames are on a hdd in a pc that died. So I first have to find a way to get the hdd out and into my other pc.

RockHopper,

What is it you want to know? What items my wizard has at this point or his stats and level?

He has 18 in Int/Wis/Char
He has 3 in Dex
He has 12 in Str
He has 8 in Con

He doesn't really have much in the way of items and he's only Lv3. He has no rings or amulets, carries a staff, and wears either a knave's robe or the other one...(can't remember the name) One has bonus against blunt weapons while the other has bonus against slashing. He's really quite the joke of a character. It's his party members who kick arse! Ajantis is a paladin(nuff said). Sharteel is an awesome swordswoman! Minsc has an insane Str of like 18/98! He hits really hard and his racial enemy is gnolls. Viconia is a regular evil priestess with and INSANE amount of magic resistance. Imoen is...well....Imoen. (I have her using a short bow right now)She's a thief and her Dex is 18! When my party went through the gnoll stronghold it was a joke! The only spell I used was heal for the fighters.

The toughest thing I had to do so far was win against Sharteel. When you first meet her she is atleast one Level higher than you and she's awesome with a sword. If you don't believe me put her in your group and watch her kill ratio. She wins, hands down, every time against any other character you can recruit. The only character that even comes close is Kagan the Dwarf and he pales in comparison.

Baldur's Gate
Log entry-04:

Dear Diary,

The Nashkel Iron Mines

Today seems a bit uncertain. As I am unsure of what to do next the fact that we cleaned up the Nashkel mines is very reassuring.

The mines were more dark and dank than I had imagined. Enroute, I pictured a simple cave or set of caves with several lines of tracks entering and exiting the mouths, carrying carts of ore with a good deal of depressing miners who were overworked and underpaid. Upon my arrival I found myself approaching a growing fear from within the edifice.

It was there before I came and struck me when my companions and I walked up from the city. The entrance was being guarded by Amnish soldiers who refused to enter themselves. Outside the cave entrance were tired and run down miners silenty waiting. No one said a word except when I requested entrance. The group and I felt a bit uneasy when we asked the guard officer for admittance to the mines for investigation. The look on his face was full of shock. He didn't say much except that we were fools for entering. He told us there was no reason for us to throw away our lives for a few gold pents from Berrun Ghastkill. Regardless of the mood we opted to enter and he stepped aside while shaking his head. His subordinates looked upon us as if they were seeing walking corpses. Our footsteps were too loud if you get my meaning. I've always felt that if you can hear your own footsteps then it's not a good sign and someone should liven up the party. Unfortunately, we had no such bard among us. No one knew of any tunes that might possibly bring merriment to hung heads of the weary resting in fear along the outside of the caves. Would that I were of the happier sort. I wish I could help the miners regain their confidence in mining.

But I wasn't, and so we ventured forth into the darkness for a quite a ways before finally seeing some dimly lit torches adorning the mining network of tunnels. As we came upon the more lit area of the caves, I looked over and noticed that Ajantis hadn't lost his composure whatsoever. He seemed so sturdy in a place of such great despair. He gave me silent confidence in the ability to perform my obligational duty. I had made a deal with Berrun Ghastkill to help discover the fate of the mines for a small reward in gold and I intended to look for whatever clues I could that would bring me closer to solving the endeavor.

The rest of the group remained mostly quiet as we trampled up the fine cave dust that had settled from a lack of mining. I choked a little and while I was coughing I overheard Viconia talking to herself. I heard her say, "Tis akin to my home, but home does not welcome me." She wasn't really speaking to anyone. I wondered what she meant by that. When she joined us she said she had been either exiled or fled, I don't remember which. The look on her face was heartfelt as I saw a tear stroll down here cheek. She noticed I was watching and quickly turned to hide it.

I don't know her story but it seems a deep one with a long and painful road. It was clear that she missed her home but for some reason felt she could not ever return. I wanted to comfort her but getting that close would mean risking my neck for intruding her private space. She didn't look the type to welcome me in. Along the road she would constantly look at the men in the group as if they were of lower stature. She mostly paid no attention to Imoen while practically worshipping Sharteel. That is, if one is able by only a look in the eyes. I don't think Sharteel noticed though. She was always too busy keeping her sword sharpened and her armor in check.

Beauty To The Beholder

I don't think my love enjoyed being in the dark. She was a tall woman atleast six feet high. I had never seen her likeness of stature. I quietly wondered if she had been raised pushing a plow. Perhaps she was born endowed with all the strength she carried. She wasn't too big and definately not too small. She didn't really show it but I think it bothered her. The signs were very subtle. I could tell when I saw her cautiously sheathing her sword after a routine check of it. She looked about as if something were about to happen when, actually, nothing did. Down in the caves her nerves were on end for sure. I didn't say this but I wanted to tell her that I would be fighting right at her side should anything happen. I wondered if she knew how I truly felt about her. If ever there came a time that we became romantically involved, I wouldn't mind stepping aside to let her lead the couple in matrimony. I felt she was a strong person, both inside and out. Serving her in a relational capacity would be an honor. I may not be a worthy male, considering her strength, and she doesn't seem the type to like a man that reads too much. If only she would have me. I may never know. I suppose it is true what they say, 'men lead lives of quiet desperation'.

Poison of a Different Sort

Continuing through the darkness, we felt our way to a few of the shipments of ore that were to be delivered to the trade routes. Upon inspection of the ore we found it to be of very poor quality as it easily crumbled in my hands when I squeezed it. It explained why some of our weapons would break during battles with the bountyhunters but it didn't give us any clue as to why it was so terribly consisted. Back in the cities many people would talk of the number of years that the mine had been in operation and how it had supplied the entire sword coast in good quantity and quality.

Further investigation yielded an unexpected twist and an answer to the fear of the miners and guards. As if the mine itself wasn't poisoned enough, it appeared to be infested with a creature known as a kobold. As I have read about them and we soon found out, these creatures neither work alone nor are intelligent enough to plot an overthrow of the mining consortium for the entire coast.

We found them to be of especially high degree of coordination and tactical skill. They would use the many trap doors and tunnels that existed inside the interstitial space between the main tunnels and their preset constructed paths. They seemed to appear out of thin air until we finally realized they were utilizing their own system of trap doors and hidden passages. Further more, we found them to have a leader.

Mulahey was his name. He could have been a half-ogre, much like the ones Sharteel delt with on the bridge at the gnoll stronghold. Regardless of his race he was up to no good.

Upon entering his central command center on the third level of the caves we found him to be of exceptional power and carried, with him, a number of lowly cohorts. When he saw us enter his chamber he began chanting and casting spells. Imoen and I were a bit stunned, while Sharteel and Ajantis fought bravely. We were surrounded by superior numbers almost immediately. Although Imoen and I couldn't move we found Viconia to be of particular use in this particular battle.

Mulahey had summoned forth the bones of the dead to somehow work for him in a fighting capacity. There had to be atleast five sets of remains that approached us from outside the circle of kobolds that surrounded us. We noticed Viconia kneeling and starting to pray. It really sort of dropped my spirits considering our predicament, however, I think she saved us in the end. I don't usually start praying until I know I'm going to die. I didn't want to die. Although we were hopelessly outnumbered the walking dead suddenly turned on the kobolds! I don't know for sure if it was her but I have a strong suspiscion that it might have been. The battle shifted in favor of us upon gaining the new, albeit unlikely, recruits.

The absolute icing on the cake, as it were, was what happened next. Minsc killed us all, some with laughter, and some with fury. We were surrounded, the unliving walked freely, both I and Imoen were frozen in place, everyone else fighting for our lives, and Minsc decides this to be the appropriate time to withdraw his pet hamster. As I recall, he removed the rodent from his pouch and screamed, "Go for the eyes Boo! Go for the eyes! Rusk!" He then proceeded to fling the small furry creature through the air landing it on Mulahey's face! Just as he directed, it started clawing and biting the half-ogre all over his face and eyes! This gave the hulking ranger the attack of oppurtunity. He lunged forward and cut down the evil overlord in a few easy strokes. If the day had been a dreary one, it was not anymore. Imoen and I would have laughed outright had we not been immobile. The others didn't see what happened as they were finishing off the remaining kobolds that immediately began to flee when they saw their leader fall.

I had to break up a squabble between Ajantis and Viconia when it was all said and done. When the fighting stopped, Ajantis approached Viconia with his usual judgmental self and severely scolded her. He was saying something about the evils being controlled and she was retorting with his masculine inferiority. This convinced me she had either played a major role or been completely responsible for the actions of those skeletons. Still, I was a little confused as to how the feat was accomplished but I'm sure that wasn't the time to ask for a tutorial on the matter. I think he relented considering we might have lost the battle had she not done whatever it was that she did.

Upon our escape and shortly after the defeat of Mulahey we met a strange grey elven warrior from the city of Evereska.

A few of his items had been kept in the locked chest in Mulahey's chambers. He thanked us for rescuing him, retrieved his personal affects, hesitatingly offered to join us, and showed us the way out through a back door in the cave walls that connected the third level of the caves to the surface. I believe his name was Xan. Although a gracious fellow he seemed a bit too depressing for our tastes and I noticed that he never took his eyes off Viconia. The stare was mostly one of certain distrust. Of that I can be sure but for why I cannot say.

Misfortune for an Unlikely Wayward Traveler

Returning to Nashkel was a long road. Bandits, peddlers, a circus, you name it, we saw it. Berrun Ghastkill made good on his word and we were given a handsome reward.

Just before leaving Nashkel we met a very odd and unwelcomed character of sorts. Upon attempting to cross a bridge, a man dressed fully in red robes approached us with a proposition.

He requested our 'services' to aid him in disposing of a woman by the name of, Dynaheir. It didn't take long for him to realize what he was asking and to whom he was asking it. Sharteel simply started to laugh histerically while Viconia held back a small giggle. Ajantis, Imoen, myself, and Minsc did not find it funny in the slightest bit. In fact, Ajantis began to step forward to address the petty little man when he was forcibly pulled back by Minsc. Actually he was thrown. I think 'thrown' is the more correct word considering he was pulled off his feet by Minsc. As the man, named Edwin, noticed the hulking figure coming towards him, in the most offensive of postures, he quickly decided to turn and run for his life. I don't think the two of them knew each other though, now, we may never know. After Minsc got tired of chasing him he returned and we never spoke of it again. The man's attire gave me pause as to something had read, once, about a coven of cult wizards by the name of "Thay". Ah well, I suppose I shall never know.

We decided to head back to Beregost to spend some of our well-earned money for armor, weapons, and a nice place to sit for a spell or two. I'm writing this entry along the way. I'm still confused about the plot to poison the iron ore from the Nashkel mines. It seemed devious yes, but for a small-timer like Mulahey, it seemed too much credit given to him. I have a feeling that he was not the mastermind behind the idea. For now we shall enjoy our time in Beregost. I can't wait to get there myself. I'm looking forward to renting a room of the highest quality to stay in.

Nice diary, Consis.

They remind me of a book I was reading while I played the second trilogy of Ultima games when I was in college. It was some kind of walkthrough for the three games, along with some fiction about what was going on during the travels of the Avatar. The story included a romance between Jhanaa (sp?) and the Avatar, among others. I felt like writing a diary of my own when I later played Ultima VII, but I gave up after a while, since the Black Gate plot was already very detailed.

Anyway, good luck in the Sword Coast.

Angelspit,

Thankyou, and if you ask me.....you should have finished writing yours. Without your contribution to the world, how will we ever know how beautiful and unique you truly are?

Direction At Last

Baldurs Gate
Log entry-05:

Dear diary,

Reflection on the Team

Today we depart Beregost in search of a bandit camp lying somewhere to the northeast. First, we'll scour the LarsWood area and then conclude our search in Peldvale. Before departing for the journey ahead I have decided to take this time to enter the detailed events that took place leading us out of Beregost and full circle to return.

I've learned a lot in my travels and I intend to try and learn more from the many experiences I've had through future readings of my journal. I should also like to look back on the fond memories I've made with my companions. Friendship can be invaluable during tough times. My head has a price on it and that makes for some nasty encounters from people of the most unlikely sort. My friends have fought by my side and defended me when I was not able. For that I am thankful.

Repugnance in the Form of a Quest

Outside of Beregost we met the mayor in a very sinful place indeed. His name is Kelddath Ormlyr. I don't know if he expected us or not, but when we arrived Ajantis refused to even step onto the ground that his temple was built on. When asked why, he simply stated that the issue was being handled by another paladin. Minsc decided to keep him company and stayed with him. I was a bit confused until I went in. Upon entering we saw the priests singing hymns to a statue of Lathander. Beside each priest stood a blue-skinned voluptuous woman wearing almost nothing singing the same tune at a higher note.

Upon closer examination, I saw that each woman had a set of fish's gills slightly beneath their jawbones. I would have liked to get a closer look at their skin to prove the existence of tiny scales but no such luck. Could it be? I wonder if they were the mythical sirens I had read about in Candlekeep. I asked and asked but the priests wouldn't speak. They all kept singing except for Kelddath. I wanted to cover Imoen's eyes but it was too late. She stood in shock while Viconia paid them no attention. Sharteel scoffed, "Sometimes, the smell of a man makes me sick to my stomach." I thought, "Um, ok, what does that mean? Is she talking about me?"

Regardless of the sinful atmosphere, Kelddath approached us with a proposition. He described a man by the name of Bassilus. He told us he was wanted in the area for crimes against humanity. He said the Flaming Fists were too busy and that we could take the job for a hefty reward. We needed the money so we accepted.

When we found the man it was a hideous sight. This poor sickening fellow had lost his mind. Had he lost his own family to illness or natural disasters at some point? I cannot say for certain but his mind was gone and we all saw it clearly. He had killed several of the town's people and was trying to re-enact moments from his own childhood. When we found him he was surrounded by the re-animated lifeless corpses of the dead townsfolk. He almost ignored our presence to continue engaging in conversation with the responseless cadavers. Most of us stood in shock of the horrific sight while Ajantis "went to work", as he called it. He continued, "We must always strive to be rolemodels to the meek." Imoen, myself, Minsc, and Sharteel looked on with complete apathy for action. Viconia was busy in prayer. It was so disgusting a sight that I began to turn green with nausea. Ajantis efficiently broke every spell and dead body of its unnatural forces. He ended with a prayer of mercy for Bassilus before giving him the same opportunity. Bassilus just laughed with insanity and Ajantis ended his life with mercy. He turned to us and said it was all he could do for the poor soul.

Direction of Thought and Investigation

Upon entering Beregost for some much needed rest and relaxation, I was greeted yet again by the same old man whom questioned me outside of Candlekeep. His name was Elminster. He was very prying indeed and I cared not for his information of searching the northeast for the bandit camp. I wasn't sure I could trust him considering that he would find me but, when asked, gave no return address, as it were. I really didn't need his information anyway.

I had already discovered some letters in Mulahey's chest. The information in these letters led me to seek out a man, by the name of Tranzig, at the Feldpost Inn in Beregost. Once inside, I approached him with the information I had obtained, he denied any involvment, and then became hostile. He challenged me to a wizard's duel(without actually saying it) by threatening to kill me on the spot for asking too many questions. I found it an excellent opportunity to test my skill against another of the same craft. We both began the duel by first dodging, and second, seeking cover within the room. He jumped behind the bed and I pulled the nearest dresser of clothes in front of me. I had quickly begun to visualize the entire scene, as I was taught, so that I could take a more educated approach. He started chanting and waving his hands, seemingly taking the offensive approach, while I had begun to imbue myself with several spells of protection when he suddenly cried out in pain and fell to the floor. He was dead almost instantly. I heard giggling from under the bed. I looked under and saw Imoen hiding there with a blood-stained poisonous dagger. I think I was more angry of being robbed the opportunity to test my skills then of being threatened by Tranzig. One might think it a bit calloused to giggle in situations like this but when one is hounded by bandits, assassins, and other such hum drudgery one becomes more accustomed to the nefarious insults of the ill-advised.

Anyway, we found another letter on his person confirming my suspiscion. He was, indeed, the Tranzig we were looking for. I was right to assume the iron mine caper had not been crafted by the likes of Mulahey. Unfortunately, the old man was right about the location of the bandit camp. This letter confirmed it was in the northeast near Peldvale. I am now even more suspiscious as to how the old man would know such information.

Pity at the Hands of the Merciful

Before heading off to confront the bandits Ajantis approached me with a small request. He reminded me of Nalin's words back in Nashkel. He said that "honor was his life" and that he was bound to help the man named, Brage, if he could. I thought it over. I decided that we couldn't afford to lose Ajantis so I made the call to persue the hunt for the deranged Amnish captain of the guard. As I recall, we were given an option for this bounty. We could return him to the garrison to be brought in under military justice or we could request penance for his sins at the local temple of Helm.

I wasn't surprised to see Ajantis lean on the side of Helm, nor did it bother me considering his impeccable character.

On the way Ajantis filled in the party with most of the details concerning the task. We needed to find Brage and bring him in because of his murderous actions against many people. The story, as Ajantis tells it, was that the man suddenly lost his nerve and went berzerk, killing everyone near him. Apparently his family, military personnel, and other by-standers were among the dead. According to the latest report from some trappers and hunters in the northwest he was last seen with his sister chaotically destroying a caravan that had misfortunately crossed his path.

Well, we found him in the far west near the coast. When we came upon the scene we saw a lot of destruction. Nothing was left. Horses, the coach, and even the luggage looked like it had been brutally hacked up by a strong sword-arm. While we deliberated over what to do next Brage's sister approached us from the nearby canopy of trees. She pleaded with us not to hurt her brother. Apparently she had been following her brother in secret and tried to save the caravan that met Brage unexpectedly. When she saw that she could not stop him she decided it was hopeless.

We talked it over among ourselves and were split on what to do. Sharteel, Viconia, and Imoen said he should be put to death while Minsc, myself, and Ajantis wanted to talk to him first to see if he was as horrible as so many people had described him to be.

We heard russling from the bushes off our flank, turned to look to see who it was and saw a man stading there. He was covered in blood and sweat. His clothes were torn and shredded as if he'd been attacked by wolves. He was leaning on a very large two-handed sword while breathing heavily. He seemed almost out of breath and his eyelids fluttered as if he were exhausted. He panted out a few words under his breath before yelling at us from a distance. He cried out some sort of riddle. Sharteel unsheathed her sword and Ajantis stood still. Minsc decided this was the best time to pet his hamster. the others stood by, watching silently. I called back to him that there was no need for hostilities but he only repeated the riddle while leaning on his sword and panting. I thought for a moment, motioned Sharteel to lower her sword and answered him in turn. The answer to his riddle was death. I think he was looking for someone who could relieve him of his life. I think that is what the riddle meant. After I answered the riddle Brage collapsed and fell to the ground. His sister ran to him in tears and cradled him with sorrow. Ajantis said nothing but communicated a look to me. With his eyes, he almost said to me, "have mercy on this man, for he knows not what he does". My eyes too, began to well with moisture when I thought of all the people Brage had killed. We carried him back to the temple of Helm and the priest blessed us for being of forgiving character. After extensively seeing to Brage's ill-fated wounds and unfortunate predicament, he came to find that the man was not at fault for his misdeeds. As it turns out, his weapon of choice was a sword cursed by the gods. He said it was a family heirloom that had hung on his mantle above the fireplace for generations. It wasn't until he pulled it down one day to go hunting that it took hold of him. When he didn't show up for guard duty the guardsmen that were sent to retrieve him found him in his cabin with his wife and children dead before being murdered themselves by the berzerked fury of the blade. Sadness befell the group as we listened to Nalin's story of what happened to Brage. He said that Brage had to pick up the pieces of his broken life now and handed us the cursed blade as a reward for saving his soul. As we left Brage with Nalin, the group remained silent. Some were deep in thought while others prayed for him and his dead family. I decided to keep the sword as a memento to always remind me of the things I hold dear in life. Life is short and I dare say, we must not forget that which has brought us to where we are.

Reflection Upon My Own Character

It is my hope to one day grow as a person to atleast the stature of my father, whom I consider to be a great man. He was both wise and noble. He was a great teacher to Imoen and myself. His heart was filled with caring and compassion. Had he not taken me in as an orphan, I don't know what I would have done or where I would be now. To him, I am thankful.

The Dream of the Dagger of Bone

Shortly after our excursion in the iron mines I experienced another dream that confused and shocked me. I do not understand what the images and things spoken in them mean, though I am at their mercy. They come without will or provocation.

We were camped off the road a bit between Nashkel and Beregost. The tents were pitched, stars lit the night sky, and I sat huddled near the fire wrapped in a warm blanket. The embers glowed and I found myself drifting off into a dreamlike state as I began to fall asleep. I appeared to have returned to the mines of Nashkel. I stood before a pile of rubble with broken barrels and carts. From beyond the darkness of the mine crept a figure. It approached and came into the dimly lit cavern. I saw that it was Mulahey exactly as we had buried him. His wounds were visible and he was beginning to rot from the inside. The corpse fell in front of me and in its place stood his spirit. It was a spectre half there. I could see through his grey ethereal body. Beside him, I noticed a dagger made of bone laying on the cave floor. The corpse itself lay flat while the spirit looked at me as if to await judgement. The dagger floated up to my hand. I looked at the spirit and bid it fare well. I knew it had been through enough torment without my extra infliction of malice. I dropped the dagger on the ground, turned, and began to walk away. When I looked back I saw the dagger rise up again and float towards me. At this point I noticed a dagger-shaped hole in my chest. I ran,  not wanting it to be placed within me. I awoke in another cold sweat and as I sat there gasping for air, frightened of what I had dreamt, I heard a voice. It ominously echoed through my mind, "You will learn".
