You can play with other heroes too, though you may have to rely more on luck and settling for a particular class (e.g. barbarian) rather than a particular hero. If maps didn't have roads that led all the way to enemy towns, I'd imagine it'd be more of an advantage for Tower, Fortress and Stronghold. The Tower units are well balanced and work well together, they have more or less everything except for speed. The only first level shooter, toughest third level unit, the imo. second best fourth level unit (not counting sharpshooters, otherwise 3rd best) that has an advantage when taking other towns, toughest 6th level unit and the only level 7 shooter..

I don't think you usually need the aging of ghost dragons, but it's very good, if unreliable. If you can you can split the stacks to get several attempts and also take first retal. But what I like the most is that they make Necro faster than 3 other factions.

Or I can still play Neela, but i should have pathfinding, if not much roads around, otherwize logistics perhaps.
One can compensate their poor attack and defense skill development, trying to get desperately massive attack/defense or both boosting artifacts, visiting libraries etc.

Yes, ofc Hack would be nice, but when not many roads and have this barbarian on snow... even with pathfinding, how it would be?

Actually my one of all-time bigger questions in HoMM3 is about mages and archmages. It is often stated that they do full damage behind castle walls or ignore obstacles, for only distance makes them lack of hit.
If it is so, why are not stated on them? They have written "No melee penalty, hero spells cost less".
Also on Black dragons there are not stated "hates Titans", even they actually have this bonus.
Are these just forgotten to write there? Lol

Hero speed depends on terrain and slowest unit up to speed 11, not hero class. If all units are native to the terrain, there won't be a terrain penalty afaik.. The issue is that with Angels and Wyverns you lose this bonus, should you use them to take places off road.

If on the other hand, the town itself had no road directly connecting to it, but the area where you get non-native units were covered in road, I don't think it'd be as much of an issue.

Best town is no doubt Conflux.
IMO, I don't like playing against Castle, I think it's very strong. I would say it comes close to be as strong as Flux.
Worst town is most likely Inferno. Tower is not that weak, even though most of their units tend to be eliminated during the game. Nagas and Titans are great units, the heroes have Library to get more spells and Master Genies are just  great to provide bonus to the army (multiply stacks and cast a lot of spells in one turn).
What's the deal with centaurs? They are probably the best lvl 1 in the game, lol. Very beefy for level 1 units, and they run like hell.
As for Necropolis, it's hard to make something out of their level 2 and 3 units, specially Wraiths.

I think every town has his own strenghts and weakness. For me, the best town is Castle. It's the most balanced, with 2 shooters and an amazing level 4 creature, I love Crusader and the damage they can do. I think level 5, Monk and Zealots are weak for a level 5, and then you have a great level 6 and level 7.

Worst, maybe Stronghold. I hate having only Mage Guild level 3 and I don't "feel" this city, too much offense and poor magic, which I love.

If I want "shoot to kill", I always take Stronghold.

And if I want to be over-powered I take Conflux.

Other than that, Rampart and Necropolis are the ones that I've played the most in "normal" games. And I like Dungeon and Castle too for a change.

Inferno and Tower are more challenging for me, and so is the Fortress (if you can say that having Mighty Gorgons in your line-up amounts to a challenge).

As for the weakest and even the strongest, it does depend on your style, surely.

Conflux is best town.

Dungeon, Necropolis and Castle are above-average towns.

Rampart is average town.

Stronghold, Tower, Fortress are below average towns.

Inferno is worst town.

I pretty much agree with this, although I think I would move Tower up to Rampart if all spells are allowed and it is'nt too hard to get gold and resources.
Necropolis might go all the way to Conflux and beyond, if you can accumulate tons and tons of skeletons and of course there is Cloak of the Undead King!...
Also worth noting and this is a big if: If Town Portal is banned and you control more than one Inferno, Castle Gate is actually very good, but expensive.

In HotA my ratings would be different, Conflux and Necropolis would move down and Stronghold, Fortress, Tower and Inferno up.
I think HotA did an excellent job with balancing the towns.

They did, then they added their town.
Sure they ballanced Conflux and Necropolis but Cove and the three stacks rule pretty much dominate the map from day 1. I remember to visit a Guild day 3 at 200% and already have the strongest army.
The only weakness of the town is how his grail sucks. Cove units aren't the biggest movement problem, the mixed troops are and if with any other unit army still suffers terrain penalty.

Cove is indeed a very good town, I don't know if it's the best cause Castle and Dungeon are still awesome, but they might have trouble with resources on impossible, Cove is easier to manage.
Cove has excellent heroes, a powerful cannon, good offensive units, they are however pretty slow, mage guild is level 4 and they might have trouble sieging, with 2 weak flying units. Of course they can get Earthquake, Teleport and Clone to make sieging easier.
And Water Magic comes very easy to cove heroes.
Eovacius is insane with cloning 2 stacks of Haspids or Sea Dogs and he even has intelligence.

Cove has the Sea Dogs, pretty much the most OP unit in the game. It's a petty you never managed to see them battle powerfull enemy heroes with stacks of Crystal and Azure Dragons but I assure you I saw some hundreds of them kill more then 20 Azures in a few rounds, once they wipped nine (always the specialty, their normal damage even if buffed would kill something like one to three). They are strange cause they are a level 3 unit but you will want to have them with you if your mission is to kill a legion of level 7 or above creatures.
Then the captians, except for Miriam's Offense they all have perfect skills. The only navigator I use is Andal cause of his pathfinding and also cause they tend to get Estates easy and with me if that's offered to any scout I pick it but he has his days as scout ended as soon as I have a town where to put him and he learns TP and Advanced Earth.
I only use Corkes for main if I don't switch him for Crag or Gundula (the last one only if Corkes get offered Diplomacy or doesn't learn one of the 'travelling' magic schools, two things that happen with a certain frequence) but many other capitans are amazing to creep the map week 3, when you start having enouch army to be able to spare some units and continue to chain between the two corners of the map would require to dedicate to that all the movement of other six heroes.
Ok that one can't learn Fly or DD in his original town and I didn't often found TP there but the spells I remember to be searching for were View Air and Visions. With all the red towers I usually find speed is not my biggest issue, the abssence of a strong flying unit is but just until I have a chance to upgrade the birds or the angels and if I can't that means that probably my enemies don't have nothing faster then birds, since that includes only Archdevils and Gold Dragons.
Finally, in long high level battles Nix Warriors ignore attack and Haspids revenge habilities combined with the Sea Dogs Accurate Shoot and the Sorceress Disrupting Ray pretty much screw any chance the enemy may have.

I would like to say that the most powerful is Necropolis, they can farm army from day 1, and if you train both Isra and Vidomina you will get thousands of skeletons in 1 month.

Cove, Castle - They have very much of firepower. Cove have OP Sea Dogs, Nix Warriors which reduce damage and Haspids which are fast and very offensive unit. Castle have solid HP units except shooters. Angel with their Ressuction will always reduce our loses as long as posssible, Maybe Knights are not best warriors in the game but Water Magic with Castle is strong combo, especially if you have mana and clone Angels.

Stronghold, Fortress - they are cheap, one is very offensive and rush town, bears ignore 80% of enemy defense, Cyclops can both shoot or help in destroy walls in siege, Ogres can supply Bears, Birds and wolfs with bloodlust to increase they dmg; second have big armor on units, hydra cause chaos with their multiple attacks, OP Cows with Death Stare, quick lvl 3, quite easy to gather large stacks of Wyverns. Both towns have excelent heroes: Stronghold Crag Hack, Gundula, Dessa, Fortress Tazar, Alkin

Dungeon, Inferno, Tower, Rampart - average towns.

In my opinion and if not playing HotA or with any other option to reduce Phoenix growth like in WoG Options, Conflux is clearly the strongest Town. That doesn't mean it's better then Necro(mancy), only that is way better then Necro(polis), they work quite differently. Get Galthran and Vido when playing Stronghold or Tower and you will better at necro then an AI necro using Charna and Xsi as mains.
As Salamandre pointed recently the lack of resurretable units makes Conflux unfit for some custom maps but in random or "designed for multiplayer" maps it simply rules. Too many OP units for their level even if that also means the weakest level 5 and a level 4 that is not beefy enouch for his role (same goes for Thunderbirds, Master Genies, Haspids, etc...). As it happens to Cove and Rampart for instance, Conflux has very clear choices to what you should leave at home when creeping creature banks.

RAMPART IS A WONDERFUL TOWN

Peaceful music, peaceful town graphic makes it good, you will be less stressful during the game.

Very good town for unagressive players! Rampart + Resistance + Water Magic -> totally good

Centaurs are good and fast but mostly die in the middle-game.

Dwarves are one of the best units in the game, 2 units survive every battles: Dwarfs and Trees. Dwarfs + Expert resistance makes them almost immunite to everything.

Elfs are good shooters, if you want to see them in the late-game, choose Ivor hero and they will survive.

Pegasis are good and fast units, but AI loves to kill them, so try to attack only shooters. Or you can leave them home and buy something else.

Trees are one of the best units in the game: 2 units survive every battles: Trees and Dwarfs. Ai will never berserk them, if enemy casts berserk -> water magic -> expert cure / expert dispel

Unicorns are cheap and strong units, Unicorn + resistance makes them almost immunite to everything.

Dragons are good units, most of you call them 'implosion food', but then I would spell some dirty in the turn when you cast implosion.

You will be rich with this town, it's cheap and the +10% Treasury is good.

Secondary skill tree is good, 'good' town -> so you can sell artifacts for exp.

I Can't understand why is Rampart underrated.

Remember: 2 units survive every battle: Dwarves and Dentroids. (Check is: try big battles with computer simulation before)

I Pretty agree with you. Rampart is strong but i dont know why Rampart is underrated? Rampart produces the most Hit Points per week of all towns. Some magic resistances, Good heroes. Inexpenive town (Except 7th dwelling). Dwarfes and Dendroids are slow but no problem, Take Thorgrim, deactivate enemy shooter and wait; also you should learn ballista skill for siege.

Rampart isn't top tier because 7th dwelling is very Expensive.

The rating for rampart depends on who you ask. But it would be good if you stop looking at stuff like total hit points per week or creatures produced, while it can be something to keep in mind, it's just one of many things.

5) Rampart (36)= Disagree. 4.th Best town.

6) Tower (36)= Agree.

7) Necropolis (38)= I Disagree. Yes low level troops and 7.th level creatre are totally garbage but more easy build 7.th dwelling. Necomacy too useful in large maps. You can win a lot of battl with Vampire Lords without losing any unit. 5.th best town.
