Some theoretical problems with HOMM3

A couple of days ago a guy who called himself gfreud wrote i a post containing some questions related to possible tactics in a combat situation "Tower vs Stronghold."

Gfreud is a friend of mine, who normally plays with Tower. I am familiar with most castles, but played Stronghold against him in a SOD network game and won with ease. Why did I win? Because of speed.

In fact, here is presumably the problem with HOMM: Speed is in fact to essential. If two armies of approximately the same military strength meet on the battlefield, an "Expert Haste" will too often win the battle alone, provided there are no tremendous differences in primary skill rating. When I play with Stronghold, I do not dare to approach any army which has a faster creature than me, least of all the Tower city, because of its massive shooting potentital.

This a somewhat of an over-simplification, but speed is nonetheless of too great importance. Other problematic aspects of HOMM3, at least in network games, are the existence of over-powerfully spells. I have no objections to any of the combat spells, although berzerk is somewhat drastic. But there is one, if not two adventure spells which should be banned from any serious HOMM-competition. The main culprit is Dimension Door. No serious heroes-player will make use of this spell, in fact it should be consequently disabled on any map. Secondly, Town Portal is also a bit too powerful. It doesn't ruin the game altoghether, but surely cripples some of the more refined tactical aspects. Without these two spells, the game is both more fair and more exciting, not too speak of more challenging on the mental part of the participants.

There is a great number of other random elements of HOMM which should be disabled. An abomination which is hard to disable is "Greater Glory." Once again: No serious HOMM player will accept a "Greater Glory" offer from any unit bigger than level 3, at most. Our goal as fans of HOMM must be to reduce the options of the gameplay to a chesslike configuration. Whoever plays best, should win, not the one who accidentally bumped into 150 Black Dragons with desire for a greater glory.

In addition, one should never attack a computer player who has the potenital of becoming a real threat. Let him or her live, accumulate more creatures and assemble the full strength of his/her army. Do not ambush him or her when the hero is out of spellpoints. HOMM is first and foremost a game of moral and intelligence, both of these virtues are possessed by the true Heroes player. Never under any circumstance buy a map from a cartographer on land. Never use a constant hit and run tactic which involves Implosion. These choises should not be considered an option at all.

Please feel free to send me comments. I know there exists some true Heroes out there, I challenge you to turn your attention to me...

Oh, I might just come to the zone and play online, question is: Will the rules I outlined be respected? Or will I risk having to play with players who follow totally different rules than I? And one question more: Who is the best carthographer around? Is there someone from whom I might request the construction of a new map, someone whom I could give my preferences, order a map etc...?

When u r on the zone, u can "own" a room there (there are 51 of them). When u r the host, i can "wright" YOUR rules in the infobox of that room, and everybody can read them (something like: No DD, Fly, Necro, blahblah..). If someone likes these rules, he joins your room and then u can play.

Be sure to registrate in a tournament before u start playing online, coz most of the players donīt play for fun, but for points..
For infos about a tourney, look here: toheroes.com

On this page u also can find hundreds of maps and their authors.
