FAQ Beta Version, comment while you still can

This is the addition to the existing FAQ section.
This is a draft, so your corrections and additional questions are required.
Thanks to Angelspit and others for the code of conduct.
______________________________________________

Code of Conduct

It is important that all members of the Heroes Community read the following guidelines. They have been devised to ensure that the Community will remain as honorable and rewarding as possible. Any violations could result in expulsion from the Heroes Community. Please observe these simple rules and everyone's life will be much more enjoyable.

Messages which contain: racism, sexism, insults and any other illegal abuse of an individual's rights will be removed. Such abuse will NOT BE TOLERATED. No excessive profanity. No porn. No warez material or discussion, which includes asking for CD cracks, keys or generators. Any mention of money "schemes" will be removed. Spam, gibberish, lamers & flaming will not be tolerated. This includes posters who are deemed a detriment to the peace keeping of the forums. Moderators reserve the right to move, edit or delete any message for the purpose of keeping this community up to date, peaceful and organized.

Note: By posting a message on this forum, you are agreeing to adhere to the guidelines of this forum, and that you understand any message deemed against the said guidelines by moderators will be deleted, and you will be penalized. Any violation of the guidelines may result in a ban from Heroes Community.

Rules Tips to Heroes Community members:

* If someone is foolish enough to seriously insult you, don't insult them back, that will only get you in trouble. Instead report the insult to one of the moderators and watch the offender be dealt with.

* If you are just an observer of someone getting insulted, it is wise not to add your reply to such thread. The offender is usually looking for attention. By adding your reply there you are letting him have it.

* Swearing and bad language are not allowed at Heroes Community. If you want to use a bad word, replace each letter in that word with *, so that the word will look like ****. If you don't replace every letter with *, then your post may be penalized. For example, f*** is not allowed; **** is allowed.

* Some bad words are not censored automatically, so the safest way is to do it yourself using SHIFT and 8 keys simultaneously to get a *.

* If somebody says something that you do not like, don't blame the person, blame what they say. So instead of saying "you are stupid" (insult), you should say "your idea is silly because ..." (discussion).

Who are the Moderators?

Moderators are responsible and trustworthy people, often webmasters of large websites related to Heroes. Moderators (also called Heroes of Order) have been appointed to keep community in order and in good spirit of heroes discussion. Moderators do not hold stars or gain new ranks, instead they concentrate on making Heroes Community a better place for everyone. Moderators have powers to move, edit and delete threads and posts, to rate threads, and to give/take quality points to any post and consequently it's poster. They are the people to contact if there are any problems or rule breaches going on.

Who is the Admin?

Administrator (also called Mage of the Land) is a webmaster of Heroes Community responsible for hosting and programming, and is also a moderator. Good suggestions about changes or improvements to the way Heroes Community works should be forwarded to admin. If you run a big website dedicated to Heroes of Might and Magic, and would like to have Heroes Community as exclusive forum for your website, contact admin to discuss the partnership possibilities.

Can I become a moderator?

Do you always follow every rule outlined on this page? Can you let go of your own viewpoint and judge from a neutral perspective? Are you familiar with the features of Heroes Community? Are you willing to give up all your stars and ranks? Are you visiting Heroes Community almost every day for 30 minutes or more? Are you willing to commit to making Heroes Community a better place? Can you be a good example to other Heroes Community members? If you've honestly answered 'yes' to every single question above and believe you are worthy to be a moderator, you can contact admin about it. No guarantees. You will need to prove yourself.

Can I link to Heroes Community?

Sure! The link to main page is http://HeroesCommunity.com

Who started Heroes Community, when and how?

Heroes Community was started by Valeriy (also known as Valera), webmaster of Age of Heroes, and Valera's COOL HOMM2 Page (1997-1999). The original Heroes Community was running on everyone.net services for almost a year, but has barely achieved 2000 posts in total. Tournament of Honor was a big partner of the old Heroes Community, but TOH board at HC was getting out of control due to some users posting very negative comments. Due to TOH's resignation from HC, Valeriy started looking for a better system which would allow better features to satisfy the needs of TOH. BlazeBoard v0.95 from bbhacks.com (free script) was used as a base for the new Heroes Community, started in May 2001. Tournament of Honor was very pleased with the new look and the features and remains a strong partner of Heroes Community. Champions of Tymeria was a great partner site while it lasted, but Pluvious (Tymeria webmaster) stayed as a moderator when Tymeria closed. Celestial Heavens Unleashed, resurrected by Angelspit joined the new Heroes Community and remains a strong partner.

The new Heroes Community grew most rapidly, getting over 100 new submissions daily, and fully living up to it's name. Heroes Community script (BlazeBoard) has been modified in many ways, and some features such as red stars and multi-post restrictions are unique to Heroes Community.

Who pays for Heroes Community?

Heroes Community has been set up and is being maintained by Valeriy, an unemployed university student. He pays the hosting and domain fees. Even small donations are appreciated.

To make a donation you need either a credit card or a PayPal account. Donations are made through the secure PayPal payment system. Payments are processed by PayPal and credited into the PayPal account of Heroes Community. PayPal will never release your credit card details to Valeriy or Heroes Community.

What are multi-post restrictions?

If one member makes more than one post in a row in the same topic, the following will apply:
second post in a row in the same thread by the same member does not increase his post count.
third post in a row in the same thread by the same member decreases his post count by 3.
fourth post in a row in the same thread by the same member will not be posted.

If member A replies to a thread, then member B replies to the same thread, and then member A replies to the same thread again, his post count will increase, since he is not posting two posts in a row in the same topic, due to B's reply in between his posts.

This feature is implemented to prevent members from boosting their post counters through posting one or two sentences in the same thread with a few minute intervals. If you are logged in properly, you can always edit your last post instead of making a new one and add as much text as you want, so multi-post restriction is not a restriction to the amount of things you can say.

What are yellow stars and ranks?

Yellow stars correspond to the amount of posts a member has made at Heroes Community. Members start with no yellow stars and can get up to six yellow stars. Each yellow star amount has a rank associated with it. Tavern Dweller is the rank of members with no yellow stars; Hired Hero is the one yellow star rank; Adventuring Hero for two yellow stars, etc.

An amount of yellow stars held by a member does not illustrate his importance nor quality of his ideas, it only illustrates the amount of posts made by that member.

You do not need to worry about getting stars, because if you are logged in properly, yellow stars will be given to you automatically once you reach a certain amounts of posts. How many is up to you to discover.

What are red stars, rank prefixes and quality points?

Each member stars with 0 quality points. To gain a quality point, a moderator needs to rate one of member's posts as being among the TOP 2% of posts at Heroes Community. Moderators can also give you a quality penalty if you make a post that breaches the rules. It does not matter whether the post is first in a thread or not, quality points are given for quality of what you've posted.

Quality however is a relative term, so there's no set definition. Moderators will give quality points upon their judgement of quality. Bad quality however is defined by breaching the rules outlined above.

Quality point amounts correspond to the amount of red stars a member has. 0 quality points corresponds to two red stars. Red stars therefore can be gained or lost by gaining or losing quality points.

Each amount of red stars, except two, corresponds to a rank prefix, which will look like: Promising Adventuring Hero, for example.

Loss of red stars puts member into an iminent danger of being banned from the community.

Red stars are not a basis for discrimination, it's a feature implemented in order to shift the focus away from gaining yellow stars through quantity rather than quality of posts.

Use the Quote Reply link at the bottom of the message you want to quite. Then, cleanup the unwanted text between the (quote) tags, so that only the interesting part is showing. That's it!

Valeriy - you should add to FAQ something that will not tolerate peoples with multiple accounts (as long as they can be detected).

About flaming - flaming generally in NET is allowed as long as it has point. Removing it completely will be dictatorship. But it's your and moderators choice how to be at all. I've flamed a bit some people - but this was because i feeled that they are not saying the TRUTH. As we gonna have rules here - we must be able to protect the TRUTH - and in forums this can be done only with flaming - well not of course pointless.

I think TAVERN should be not moderated at all. It's a tavern - you can speak everything in a tavern. There can be something before entering there "YOU CAN GO - BUT YOU ARE WARNED - YOU MAY BE OFFENDED BY GOING IN".

Bad Idea

I would not come to this board anymore if I knew people were allowed free reign to flame on others. I like a feeling of respect between some of us and if no moderation was in force, then things would get very very ugly. I was once upon a time an advocate of no moderation, but since then, things have changed and I think things will get really ugly really quickly.

But then someone else may not come if there is no flaming allowed. More rules always limit your space, and then limits the people - making them less interested. Rules must come as something natural, as long as internet is natural - which i believe is not So it's weird really.

talkin' bout this - US really have some weird rules&laws.... Like drinking only to 2pm in most pubs?

I prefer to lose members that are only interested in flaming than losing the ones that aren't. There are other sites on the Internet where people attack each other for fun. I don't think this is the purpose of Heroes of Might and Magic discussion forums.

i think that we should have a fair amount of rules, but we should still have a little leighway... like we should be allowed to playfully make fun of ppl, as long as they dont a) say something too mean
b) the other person doesnt take it too seriously...

I don't consider that flaming, and I don't think other moderators will either. Our rules are pretty simple and forgiving. I can't even remember the last time an action was taken because of the rules.

Better late than never

Couple of quick comments/suggestions/questions

Is it possible to have a new member automatically sent to the FAQ at the end of signing up? That way, nobody could say, "I didn't know". This would be ONLY at the end of signup, maybe with a button at the bottom they have to scroll to, and electronically 'sign'? Makes accountability a little easier to manage. ( Sorry, one of the things I've done for a living is industrial training on procedures. Accountability is a very big deal there, and I guess I've been brainwashed. )

Could you add a quick note in there to the effect:

Before your first post, it's strongly suggested that you lurk a bit, and get an idea of what's going on, what has been discussed to death, whether that really cool picture that you've decided to use is already in use as somebody's custom avatar, etc? Skim a few of the topics past the first page in each forum.

Unkahaakon just took...

words out of my mouth.

Let those newbies  know what rules are so NOBODY can make excuses that they didn't know about rules.
I think moderators should also immediately react to post that are against FAQ. We should have zero tolerance against all insults or others. Of course warning is first step always before starting penalties. However with apology and "good" explanation why person did something which isn't allowed here could clear things up for person and he would maybe get his quality point back after he promises not to do this again. If this continues after this there should be penalty for breaking the rules as well as from the other post before and also from the promise one made. So people would take serious thought how to behave. We don't need people insulting each other here, but of course misunderstanding happen especially when all aren't native english speakers.

My opinion

I think that in the faq it should be included the number of posts you must reach to get each yellow star.
Flaming, well, of course it is not a good idea to say in the faq that it is allowed, but the moderators should overlook flaming unther some conditions.
It would be cool also to write in the faq what is each posting room (I don't know what to call to places like the tavern or library sory ) for.
Another thing, I think rules don't need to be very hard or very hard explaining, each new member that joins probably knows what he can and can't do in places likes this, I think most of the rules here are just common sence, like note insulting and things like that.
Once again sory for my really bad english, I hope that someone understands what I said.

I don't see what the big deal is about swearing.  It's not like there are people here who haven't heard swearwords before.  Nor is it likely that replacing a swearword with **** will stop swearing on the fora.  Finally, there are plenty f ways to circumvent the no-swaering rule.  It's just pointless.

Just a quick post to bring this up to the top again. Recent events have shown that maybe it's a good idea to remind people about the rules?
