You may have a router.

Go to www.gameranger.com, create FREE accounts and play Homm3 there. Quite easy to arrange a game there.

Thanks. The game works from gameranger

Yea, but the actual HoMM3 online gaming solution is http://heroes3.net

I seem to have the same problem with my three buddies as Masklin when trying to play H3 World Tournament! We can sometimes all join the game, but we will get stuck on sending data when passing on the turn, and ppl will eventually drop from the game. It is, however, not only an online problem, we seem to get the same bullsnow over regular LAN as well as over Hamachi 1.0.1.5! WOG and original H3 Complete seem to be unaffected, so I guess its not identical to Masklins problem, but we would truly love to play some WT!

I had quite a trouble playing heroes 3 online myself.
(stuck when sending data)
to solve those problems I made some research and decided to share the results with others:

Heroes 3 is based on the awful Direct Play networking interface by microsoft. (see wikipedia for more info)

One of the major flaws of Direct Play is its lack of reliability.
If a packet is lost (and it is inevitable in a large scale network like the Internet) it will not retransmit it, causing a connection loss that eventually causes the freeze during the data send in the game.

* on smaller scale networks like the LAN the game should work as is.
if it doesn't try the following:
1) make sure you use the local IP for the connection (192.168.xxx.xxx etc.)
2) make sure you don't have firewall on.
3) connect to your router using an Ethernet cable (Wifi is not very reliable itself)
4) if the previous didn't help consider replacing (reseting/updating the firmware of) the router, it is probably malfunctioning.

* on the Internet (the direct connect option):
creating the initial connection:
1) Make sure you are using the Internet IP for the connection
2) Make sure you have no firewall active on your computer and your router (if any) transmits them to the right computer(see your router configuration manual for more info) a VPN program like hamachi could replace that.

getting disconnected (during data transmission):
you need a reliable tunnel that will handle the networking issues. Use a TCP based VPN.
- Hamachi like most other VPN programs are UDP based (as it is believed to be faster) and are not reliable as well. Using those will not make any difference.

1) Gameranger is supposed to avoid this problem

2) try looking for a different program, just make sure it is TCP based.

I used the open source OpenVPN ( google for it, it is free). It is not very user friendly however and requires some networking knowledge to configure, but it woks

Hope this helped someone.

Gameranger does not fix the slightest thing for me and my friends.

Is there any way to use OpenVPN or equivalent (perhaps more user-friendly versions?) software to play 3-8 players over the internet?

I've given up on the prospect of enjoying this wonderful game online with multiple friends, but your post gave me a weak flicker of hope.

I'm having the same problem. When my friend begins the scenario, my game crashes and I receive a message like this one, except its another file:

"RMT*AVSC.BIN"

I also saw on the web other people having the same issue and they got even another file with a different name.

That is exactly the reason i made that post in the first place

I played a 3 players game with OpenVPN, though in my case i had to use it for even a 2 players game, my ISP(internet service provider) drops packets like crazy. I couldn't last 2 turns without getting disconnected :/

Other then OpenVPN I guess an SSTP VPN could work.
it is built in the new windows operating systems (server must be windows 2008, clients could be windows 7, windows vista sp1 or windows 2008, or newer) you can get a step by step guide to it's configuration from microsoft.com

There are OpenVPN community packs that make it an easy to use tool, some are shareware some are free. I do not know all of them and whether they are using a TCP tunnel (which you want) or the regular UDP tunnel.

Apart of those there are some Linux only solutions and enterprise solutions by Cisco and other major companies. Those are not free however and in some cases need a dedicated hardware to operate.
i guess those are irrelevant.

Ey Masklin! Did you get some OpenVPN thing to work for you? If so please share

Yesterday I tried connecting my 3 computers again to test H3 World Tournament since me and my friends wanna play 2v2 games, and since a new release was out I thought "HEY MAYBE ITS FIXED".
I tried both LAN and Gameranger.
On gameranger it connects two computers just fine, the 3rd trying to connect loads for a minute or two and then exits again unable to connect.
On LAN, one computer creates a game, second computer can see the game just fine and connect just fine. As soon as it connects, the game disappears for the 3rd computer which is unable to connect, getting the "wrong/cannot find IP adress" crap... I exit the game on my 2nd computer (the one that could enter the game) and magically the game appears to the 3rd computer that is suddenly able to connect without problems. Now the game, however, is no longer accessible to the 2nd computer. As you said earlier it is ROYALLY FRUSTRATING!

This sounds like a classical firewall problem...
Have you disabled the firewalls of all 3 computers?
(same applies to your gameranger problem, at least according to your explanation of the issue. Wouldn't hurt to try at least )

Make sure also that you are using the correct (LAN) ip and the game map allows more then 2 human players.

if however the original heroes work properly, with the same configuration, this might just be a bug in the World Tournament consider visiting their forums for tech-support & reporting this issue.

We seem to get the exact same problems trying out WOG (3.58f + Era 1.81)

Did anyone actually try WOG or WT successfully with more than 2 players?

And same again with ERA II... Could something other than Windows firewall be blocking/interfering? I'm using vista/win7 64-bit OS's... Don't know if that has anything to say in the matter...

Anybody knows how to solve a multiplayer problem on HoMM II? Me and my friend both have the Gold version (windows version) and we used hamachi network > tcp/ip in order to host the game. But when either me or my friend are trying to connect using the IP address the game says that the IP adress is invalid/not found.

Any help? I realise most players here play HoMM III..and so will we but we also wanted to try HoMM II together.

Looks like hamachi problem or the game being blocked by firewall. Try to run the game in local area network using TCP/IP or IPX with firewall disabled (or correctly add the game to firewall exceptions on both computers) first.

playing hereos 3 online on tcp/ip

Hello!

I am having some problems playing hereoes 3 online with my friend. First off I own a copy of hereos 3 complete and he owns a copy of hereos 3 sod.  We both live a few hours away and therefore would like to play online via tcp/ip if at all possible. I followed previous forum guides saying that if you go to www.whatismyip.com to get your ip address and then while in the game going to new game, multiplayer, tcp/ip, host game and then have my friend type in my ip address which I found from the website under the search buttom. However, it always says that it can not find the ip address.  Any help with walking me through this would be greatly appreciated, also if it is not possible to play online through tcp/ip any other possible ways. Direct instructions would be nice as I am not the most computer savy. Thank you all!!!!
