Exactly because of that problem, there are so called "trigger ports" present. You open that trigger port on your router, and by that, a whole range is opened aswell. You can read that in the opening post of this thraed at point 6.)

Thank you for pointing me to it Angelito, but the setup I am describing here is a little more complicated. When running virtual machine in NAT  mode in VirtualBox there are two NATs involved: we could call them "physical machine NAT" and "router NAT". So, in order for packets from the Internet to arrive to virtual machine they need to be forwarded on the router first to the physical machine, and then in virtualbox to the virtual machine.

I'm having issues when trying to play HOMM3 with friends over gameranger. The rest work fine, but I personally can't move my hero or build anything when it's my turn. I'm on Win 7 64 bit, but I'm not the only one on the game who's running that setup. We're using HOMM 3 complete.

I am having issues all of a sudden. We get "receiving map headers from host" message that never ends. We have tried all these map things and such and just can't figure it out. It all worked perfectly fine until this moment.
We are using Hamachi and connecting through TCP/IP. This happens with my laptop too.

Game starts up, loads, crashes

Hello. I've been trying to play H3 Complete over GameRanger, but it doesn't work. I've been looking about and found people have same or similar issues but I don't seem to find any solution.

Whenever I join a game, the game fires up, loads for about 2 min, then, for a split second, a H3-styled message pops up, then the game shuts down. The message disappears too fast for me to be able to read it. Perhaps i could try and screenshot it, if it's important.

I play with HD Mod (HD+), but it's the same story over again i play vanilla. I have Era II *installed*, but it's not the version I'm trying to use here.

The .exe version is 4.0.0.0. I tried it on another computer in the house but it's the same thing.
I tried to play it with a friend, me hosting, but his game just crashes upon loading too (but my game starts up perfectly when I host).
I tried the setupreg.exe (placing it in the H3 dir then start the file), restarted computer, didn't work.

I have both windows firewall and F-Secure's firewall disabled. Static IP set up and ports opened. (screenshot: http://fuskbugg.se/file/Z1qhd3/ports%20heroes.PNG ) I'm on D-Link Dir-635. Windows 7 64-bit. The game plays fine singleplayer. There's no crash logs in the H3 directory that I can find.

Oh, and compability mode XP(sp3) didn't solve it.

TYSM in advance.

For people having problem connecting with Gameranger with Windows7:

The problem is the instalation of the game in folder Program Files (86). GR just cant find the game exe there.

The sollution is: Just uninstall heroes and install it in folder Program Files. Durring instalation you must pick folder manualy.

I have problems when play in Game Ranger too when I am using HD mod.
Without HD mod it works always good, but with HD mod it works 2 times from 10 I guess. So whats why I prefer play in hamachi, but finding players in Game Ranger ofcouse.
In Game Ranger I play usual SOD, without HD mod.

But you can choose the game .exe manually from the settings...

I have started to play on gameranger occasionally :-) but i really prefer custom maps than random maps cause randoms are too boring by design in my humble opinion

Gameranger connection problems

Hello! Im trying to play Heroes 3 Complete edition (GOG) through Gameranger. But I usualy get stuck at loadingscreen (hourglass) when joining. In some few cases I have got into the lobby, but then I get stuck at reciving map header from host. I have never got into race selection.

I have tried quite a lot of modifications to get it working. Among those are:

Disabling windows firewall
Putting PC i DMZ
Forwarding Gameranger IP
Checked at UPnP is enabled

I have also spent 4 hours googling for answers, but havnt found any more yet.

System info:

Macbook Air 2011 running Win 7 32bit bootcamp
Dlink Dir 655 router

my guess is that your isp has blocked your ports which did the same for me, game never loads. I resorted to hamachi instead, finding people in gameranger chatrooms use hamachi is common so you should not have much trouble with it.

Gameranger, Hamachi, Evolve...

Neither of these work. All firewalls off (not that it should matter over VPN I heard), ISP's are okay, etc, but still me and my friends observe that only two players can see/join and play.

I truly don't get it... So frustrating.

I'm in the US and try to play HOMM3 online with a friend elsewhere in the US and one in Japan. We successfully played many games together last year via GameRanger and then something changed at one point because stopped being able to get games that would last beyond a week (in game time). We'd start a game, get connected and play a few turns and then one of us would get stuck on "receiving data" between turns and it would disconnect. We've been trying to troubleshoot this for many many months now with no success. We've fiddled with port forwarding, firewalls and whatever else we could think of. Has anyone encountered a similar issue and been able to fix it? Or, can anyone recommend what settings we might want to check on each of our ends to make sure we're all on the same page?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm, no. We just tried Hamachi this morning but couldn't get a game to connect. I'm not familiar with tunngle though. Have people been using that successfully with Heroes?

Using Tunngle is the only way I have managed to play with my friends. Remember to also allow public network in windows firewall.

I had no luck myself after making a bridged OpenVPN setup. Homm3 would still not connect using tcp/ip, for reasons that are still not clear to me.

However, once I installed this IPX helper in my Win7, and used this w/ OpenVPN, I was able to play the game fine in IPX mode. Note that normally Win7 does not support IPX.

http://www.solemnwarning.net/ipxwrapper/

Using the IPX wrapper is easy, you just extract the files in homm3 directory and run the .reg file depending if you have 32bit or 64bit Windows. Setting up OpenVPN on the other hand... Unfortunately not so simple. But if you can get it up in bridged mode (tap interface, not tun), and can get to where you can ping your friends with their OpenVPN addresses, you should be set. The "client-to-client" option is likely necessary too on the server.

I was also pleasantly surprised that if the game should crash, saving game and rehosting off the savegame allowed resuming at just about the same point.

Can't play with more than one friend

Hi, for few hours my friends and I were trying to start up a multiplayer for three of us without success. The problem is that we actually can play multiplayer in pairs but it is not possible to play with 3 of us. If one connects to the ones server then the other can't.

We have tried using Hamachi and Gameranger but nothing here works.

I'm sure that we all have the same versions of game because I provided them both with HoMM3 Complete Edition. I haven't got a slightest idea why we can't play with eachother.

Will try to answer any questions that may help in solving that matter.
