That means YOU are fine but your OPPONENT (host, server) has to upgrade his version from 1.0 to 1.4

Hello everybody

I have a problem and I need some help
This is my situation:

I have 2 computers at home, one of my brother and one for me. The router is connected to my brother's computer and I'm connected to that computer with a cable. Where I must open the ports, in my computer or in the other computer?
Another question : I have HOMM3 with all expansions, and I want to play SOD online but with the all features of AB avaible. What patch I need?
Actually I have SOD 3.2 and the Setupreg

The ports have to be open (or forwarded) ín your router.
Version 3.2 is fine, no patch needed.
Setupreg.exe is only needed for the case the zone won´t detect the game installed in your harddive when logging into the zone room

The problem I have is weird. For no apparent reason, when starting up Zone: http://zone.msn.com/en/root/default.htm
it doesnt give me the possibility to choose CD-ROM; this causes to denie me acces to zone-room.
If I load another game I can get through to me ZF, but no way to the room.

Anyone, please?

Could u tell me what message u get when u try to enter?

One thing that happened to me not long ago, was the "sign in / sign out" bug. I saw the button "sign out" on the top, which obvious told me i´m signed in. But when i clicked on a game in the cdrom menu, it said i´m not signed in yet. Not really sure how i got rid of that bug, but some clicks and restarts later, it worked again.

When I open zone, just: http://zone.msn.com/en/root/default.htm
At the top, under the sing in link, it does not show the row with CD-ROM etc, but a light-blue, hard to notice, link that says 'site index', when I click that I get a list of all games, and behind it 'index'

When I click HoMM3 there, I am lead to the zone-room, having to click through the advertisement and all, but after it says it installs (going from 0 to 100%) nothing happens, not even my ZF comes on.
I can only get ZF if I click on another game like AoE2

I have no clue..

Zues said: hey bud try doing a search for msn  game zone then go in that route you might be missing a file upgrade or somethin  that will reload ya

No clue what that means also lol, when it comes to computers I'm a bit slowww

Hei!

Angelito, could you meet on MSN later today? Me and a friend of mine have some questions for you. It's almost the same problem as the last time, just not quite. And it's way to complicated to be dealt with through a simple post in the library.

Sincerely,

TheScholar.

I recently picked up a wireless router and connected it to my desktop PC so that I can go online with my laptop anywhere in the house. Ever since then I have had trouble hosting Heroes 3 with a friend of mine. I would have to disconnect the router and go back to just using the modem to establish a TCP/IP connection.

Then, finally I read this thread and started to educate myself on "ports" and "port forwarding."

I'd like to know a little more about what it all means beforeI attempt to free up the port so I can host Heroes while still keeping the router connection. What exactly does forwarding the ports do? Are there any risks involved or does the newly forwarded port only pertain to the Heroes?

Thanks in advance. I may be back with more questions once I actually attempt to forward the ports.

EDIT:

More questions...

When I get to the "port filtering" area it says that all the ports are open already (confused)- is this normal? I was expecting them to be closed and then I would enter in the port numbers to be opened for Heroes...

Also, does this mean that I will also haveto do the same process of opening ports on my laptop in order to play HEroes on it?

Also, this is a bit confusing...
Quote:
These are the ports "heroes3" and the "zone" need:
2300 to 2400 UDP (trigger port = 6073)28800 to 29100 TCP (trigger port = 6667) and 47624 TCP and UDP

How exactly do I plug those numbers in? There are 3 choices... TCP, UDP and IP. I need to know exactly which numbers are added into which areas. What is a "trigger" number? Does it get entered in differently than the others?

No. You just have to open these ports on your router. On your comp, u activate your firewall and allow "exceptions" (if u have XP). In the properties of your XP firewall, u can add programs in the tab "exceptions". There u add "heroes" and (if needed) "zone".

I have explained it in a different thread already, but i can do it again here aswell, but will use a different example..
The ports are needed for the datastream. If they are closed / not forwarded, no data could be send or recieved. Every program uses different ports for their datastream. The game "Heroes3" uses all ports between number 2300 and number 2400 (not all 101 at one time, but sometimes it uses 2356, then 2308, then 2377...and so on...). Directx8 uses the ports between 28800 and 29100.
Now there do exist different types of routers. Some are very easy structured, others have more possibilities of settings and are easier to handle. The main difference in our case is the possibility to enter a whole range of ports or just single numbers.
An example for a router with "range" possibility would be this one:

First column, u give the application a name u like (e.g. Heroes3). Now u can set a range by typing the first port (in our case 2300) and then the last port of the range (in our case 2400). Then u enable either UDP or TCP or both if needed. Then u see the server adress (in your case called "IP"). This is important for the router to know, coz he is NOT able to know for which of all the comps plugged into this router (could prolly be 15 different comps, every comp has its OWN internal IP, like 192.168.1.101 for the first comp, 192.168.1.102 for the second and so on...) your forwarding should be enabled. Means, if you forward these ports for YOUR comp, that doesn´t mean your father, who is plugged in to this router as well(as an example), can play Heroes online with his comp aswell!
Now, some other routers don´t have two fields where they can enter a start and an end port, but only one field. Would need a very long time to enter ALL needed ports one by one to enable them. To make this work easier, they have the so called "trigger ports". For every range, there does exist a (master) port. Means, if you forward this single port (in our case 6073), the whole range (2300-2400) is automatically forwarded. And if u forward just the single (trigger) port 6667, the range 28800 to 29100 is completely forwarded at once.

Hope this made some things clear though...

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I found this, which pertains to the exact brand and model of router that I have.

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WGR614/default.htm

If you get a moment, please check it out and tell me if this is where I should go to reconfigure the ports and such.

Thanks again.

Hello all, my problem is the following:
me and my friend tried to play over TCP-IP - I was the host, so I gave him my IP, he connected, we chose map, sides, difficulty, entered the game and everything worked out smoothly. However, sometimes in the first, sometimes in the second, sometimes in the third turn (tops), right after one player finishes his turn, the "recieveing data" window simply blocks. It stand there for 30 sec or so, and then displays a message like "do you want to wait a little longer", but when i click yes, i get the message that the other player left the game, and the same message gets my friend as well. After that, we can continue play like we're in single player (?!).
We both have Heroes Complete with no additional patches whatsoever, the configurations are both WinXP Pro, but I have ISDN connection, he has modem, and I have Service PAck 2 which he doesn't have. Both firewalls are enabled, but in the settings of my firewall i included heroes to be allowed to play.
Sometimes, but, which is important, not always, we saw that his internet connection is terminated after we exited heroes, but as far as i know all options of auto disconnecting on both PC's are disabled. Please help

Hello rainalcar,

reading your post brings only one idea in my mind. Your friend has "problems" with his internet connection. Auto-disconnect, and perhaps auto-connect again (for the fact the disconnection was not always seen when finishing the game). It should not matter you have ISDN and he just dial-up, coz i played with many players on the zone who had dial-up and it worked fine.
You ever tried to play with a different person than your friend?
We could try to get a test game going, no problem. But i don´t play at gamespy, only on MSN zone. Get an account there and meet me in the lobby. Or contact me via MSN messenger.

Do you know where are these options auto-disconnect/connect in windows? Can firewall, which is enabled generaly for him pose a problem?
Yes, I've tried yesterday (), and we managed to get to 7 turns with no problems, except there was one lag in the 3rd move when the bar stopped at 75% for 30 sec or so. We started one more map again, but his connection broke while loading, so we called it a day there.
Ok, I'll come to the zone this evening, if you're not there i'll see you some other time. Thanks for your help.
