New to the forum  I'm using a D-link 624. I read the forum however, my problem is with HoMM4. I can't find the ports I need to open anywhere! Can you please direct me. I managed to play my friend with the DMZ turned on, however I want to be able to play with two computers on the same router. I just need to be able to find out port triggers etc. A speedy response would be greatly appreciated, I've started playing today and im already addicted!

I did a short research, and all I could find now where these ports:
4377 and 6500. Just try it (TCP and UDP) and we will see. If it doesn't work, we post it in our Heroes4 section, so maybe someone who played this game behind a router can help us.

Ok, So Angelito's numbers worked. The IP that needs to be used is the one the router assigns your computer on the LAN. This is of course a fix for playinh HoMM4 behind a firewall without turning on DMZ. Maybe someone should bump this to the HoMM4 section as well???? Hope this helps relieve someone elses headaches. By the way in case you haven't been following this thread, I am using a D-Link  DI-624.

My HOMM2 Gold works perfectly with Windows 2000 or whatever, you might need a patch to make it work.

OH btw I have that same kinda Broadband thingy or whatever.

Router = A "machine" which allows more than 1 computer (in a house) to connect to the internet via the same (phone-)line.
So if u have at least 2 computers in your house, and all can connect to the internet at the same time, chances you got a router hooked up between your comps and the phone line is nearly 99%. A router is something like a "hardware firewall". It also protects your comps from "bad things" (datas) coming from the internet. But sometimes, u wanna allow specific datas to enter your router and then from there to your comp. You router has tons of so called "ports", which are nothing else than "doors" where data can enter. Every program uses it's own specific ports (Heroes3 = ports 2300 - 2400) where it sends and recieves data. Now u just "tell" your router to open some of these tons of ports, so the wanted data can pass the router and find their way to your comp, and vice versa.

That's some pretty simple explanation, but I hope you get the idea of the functionality of a router.

You should answer the questions first

You have a router?

If I try to play a game on gamespy I get the message "There was an error trying to connect this session...." and H3 closes again. I'm certain that my personal firewall is not causing the trouble so I guess it's the router/firewall. Is the error caused because the router blocks the necessary traffic or because of the different IP adresses? (internal/external).
I've tried configuring my router without any success, I can't connect to it via a browser. (It's a "Cisco PIX 501 Firewall").

Can anyone help me or will I have to make a mechanical bypass operation with the network cables?

It's because the router blocks the traffic. That's why u need to forward the trigger port 6073 TCP&UDP to make it possible.
I will take a look at your router model when I return home today (around 2 hours from now on) and we may meet in Gamespy to handle your problem there.

I need to know your exact router model. Like "Netgear DG 814" for example. Then I can look up a step-by-step walkthrough how to forward ports in your router menu and can post it here for you.
