Developing Characters

To help develop your characters we are going to a little exercise. It might sound a bit ridiculous, but just hear me out. We are going to have a little character interview.

What does your character look like? Taste in clothes, physical flaws, birthmarks, tattoos, etc. How does she behave? Does she have pet expressions, gestures, mannerisms? Is she quick to anger or does she withdraw from conflict? How does your character speak? Writing dialect can kill a good novel if it's too hard to follow, but this is more than just accent. Does your character use flowery prose to describe the simplest of things? Does he use a minimum of words? How does your character interact with other characters? Is he kind and giving? Does he allow himself to be walked on or is he prickly and standoffish?

My character will be Edwin from my new thread Temptation and Righteousness.

Average height, fairly good looking, very athletic, wears dark stealthy clothes such as capes, hoods, etc. He is arrogant. He loves to hang out at the tavern. He feels it is a great place to meet people and get connections. When he raises his eyebrows when interested. When thinking, he vacantly stares off into space. Edwin never shows sadness or remorse unless it is considered to be a social norm to do so. (i.e. a funeral) Edwin does not show his anger he simply remains calm and casual and is either passive aggressive with his choice of words or decides to discreetly make threats and maybe even start a fight. When “getting even” he makes sure he attracts as little attention as possible this includes when he gets into a fight unless of course he is trying to show off, then he would attract as much attention as possible. He is for the most part polite and is quite charming by making witty jokes and giving many compliments whether they be shallow or genuine.

Now to start with the interview…

I approach Edwin in the local tavern and ask him if I could ask him a few questions. He immediately puts a big smile on his face.

Edwin: “Why of course. I would love to give an interview to one of my loyal fans. What is your name?”

Me: “Well actually I’m sorry to say I’m not one of your fans. I’m just here to get to know people.”

Edwin: “That’s okay. I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot about me soon. But you didn’t tell me what your name was good Sir. My name is Edwin.”

He holds out his hand and looks me directly in the eye. He’s got a great handshake, firm, but not crushing my hand either.

Edwin: “Nice to meet you, RSF3.”

Me: “And you as well. What do you do for work?”

Edwin: “I’m an adventurer. I’ll take any job no matter how dangerous or difficult. I take it as a personal challenge, however I’d obviously be expecting a really nice reward after I’m done. I’m mean I’m not doing it all for just the personal challenge. I’m not a fool.”

He gives a big smile and laughs a little bit. He definitely likes to hear himself talk.

Edwin: “What about you? What do you do for work? Don’t tell me you’re the tax collector?”

Edwin wipes the smile off his face and gives me a cold look.

Me: “No don’t worry about that. I’m just a merchant feeling out the type of people I’m dealing with in the area. It’s good to know your customers.”

Edwin: “Well GOOD. Cause if you WERE, we would have a BIG problem…”

He holds his cold stare at me for a few seconds and then bursts out laughing.

Edwin: “I’m just joking. Relax.”

I think I pretty much got enough of what I needed to know about, Edwin. I had other people to interview. I stopped asking questions at that point and it was good that I did. It took me another five minutes just to get out of the conversation. He really likes to talk. Seems like a nice guy though.

This is what Lord Mvass of the Inferno looks like. He is very arrogant and mean.

Me: I'd like to ask you some questions...
Mvass: Lord Mvass.
Me: Yes, Lord Mvass. What do you do for a living?
He stares at me blankly.
Mvass: I don't live.
Me: What do you do for food?
Mvass: I don't eat.
I get slightly mad.
Me: Do you work?
Mvass: Oh! That's what you meant.
I feel I made a breakthrough.
Mvass: I burn things.
I get a little scared.
Me: What sorts of things?
Mvass: Oh, humans, ice demons, trees, all sorts of things.
Me: Okay. Now, I heard you rule the Inferno. What's it like to rule an entire plane of existence? It must be stressful.
Mvass: Why?
Me: It's a lot of responsibility, I must think.
Mvass: Bah! Burn your enemies and everyone who annoys you. Simple. Besides, who asked you to think.
Me: It's an expression...
Mvass: Don't use it when I'm around. I might forget and punish you for thinking.
Me: Yes...
Mvass: Call me Master!
Me: Why should I?
Mvass: I will incenirate you otherwise!
Me: Cool off!
Mvass: That's like telling a mortal to die.
Me: You're not a mortal?
Mvass hit me lightly. It wouldn't hurt at all, if his hand wasn't burning. I got a burn.
Mvass: I am the God of Fire.
Me: So, anyway-
Mvass: Go away. I'm tired.
I snuck away, afraid of angering him.

I got this from a website online that gives great tips for writing. There are several articles there as well.

Here's the website:

http://www.fictionfactor.com/characters.html

I think that if people read over this, we could have some really interesting discussions on ways to develop our stories and characters.

Reporter: Im glad you could take the time to sit down and let us get to know the real you. First, ill need your name and age.

Unholy One: I am simply known as The Unholy One. I am 3,000,000,000,000 years old.

Reporter: What is your occupation?

Unholy One: I am currently scheming to return my brethern, unite them and conquer the world

The reporter gulps

Reporter: Right..on to the next question. How did you come of being??

Unholy One: Simple. I was created out of death.

Reporter: Death as in Death from the four horsemen, or death as an element?

Unholy One: They are one in the same.

Reporter: Ok..now on to the personal stuff...What is under that cloak you wear?

Unholy One: Bits and peices, mostly a black presence, some skeletal peices.

Reporter: Who is your greatest enemy??

Unholy One: I have to say that pesky mage, Asmodean. Or MightyMage...

Reporter: Why?

Unholy One: because twice, they drained my powers. I regained them back the both times.

Reporter: Recently you seemed to have made an alliance with Gorman, who made an alliance with RSF, who made an alliance with Dingo. How do you feel about becoming just one big faction??

Unholy One: Well i think i can trust gorman to an extent. RSF im not too sure of...i dont trust time mages, and Dingo i dont know, i've never met him.

Reporter: You also brought the four horsemen back into existance, there has been a little bit of arguement..why??

Unholy One; I think they are mad because i, the youngest forsaken one, brought them, one of the oldest back into existance.

Reporter: well thank you for your time, i shall be going now.

Unholy One: Death is coming.

Reporter: huh??? what do you-

The reporter stops as his head goes rolling on the ground, due to death.

Nice start 2Xtreme. However I think you could try to bring out a little bit more of the personality or lack there of. The website has some nice threads to delve into for this.

Personality Outline:

temperament
moral/ethical/religious beliefs
political stance
hobbies
habits
quirks or eccentricities
likes/dislikes
fears or phobias
short and long term goals
hopes and dreams

Edit: Here is the example interview from the website to give you an example.

Brief introduction to my character: Captain Danaar is 6'2", dark shoulder length hair, dark brown eyes, beard and mustache neatly trimmed. Athletic, excellent at hand to hand combat. Has magic abilities. Doesn't know how to use them very well, but he can heal wounds and kill with his magic. He works as Lord Michael's captain of the guard; however, he's not happy about his lordship's bizarre behavior of late.

I stop at Captain Danaar's table in the Firewalk Inn. The captain is sipping a tall glass of ale. He frowns when I ask if I might trouble him with a few questions. He motions for me to have a seat. He seems relaxed but he reminds me of a predator lounging in the sun; ever alert and ready to pounce.

1. Do you like your job? Why or why not?

A muscle twitches in his jaw and he leans back in his chair. He crosses his arms over his broad chest and stares at me. He's watching the other patrons as well.

"It's what I do. Why do you ask?"

2. Do you have any friends? Significant others?

"That's none of your business." Danaar crosses his right foot over his left knee and pulls a long dagger from his boot.

3. What is your idea of success?

"Surviving" He begins to clean his nails with the knife. His eyes are on his work but his shoulders are tense. The questions are making him nervous.

4. What do you hate?

"Stupid people" He raises his brown eyes to stare at me. His look is dark and intimidating. There is no doubt which group of people he thinks I belong to.

5. What do you do in your spare time?

"Practice surviving." He turns the knife over slowly in his hand, examining the blade.

6. What did you have for breakfast?

He pauses, his brows drawn together. I get the impression he doesn't remember. It's not important to him. "Meat. bread, whatever's handy."

7. Did you ever have a pet? Describe it.

"No."

8. Do you believe in luck? Why?

"I make my own luck." He tosses the knife into the air and catches the blade by the point with his thumb and forefinger. His dark eyes sparkle. He's practiced the parlor trick.

9. What is your favorite scent? Why?

"The smell of hot metal when the smithy forges a fine sword." A flash of white teeth show when he smiles. It's a rare site but one worth waiting for. His face lights up. He's passionate about the subject of weapons.

10. What is the strangest thing you have ever seen?

His eyes narrow and he flips his dagger into the edge of the table. For several slow heartbeats, he stares at me. Leaning forward his voice drops into a low whisper. "A perfect wolf print on the trail to Rahard Tor."

He sees the disbelief in my eyes and he leans away. The rapport between us is broken.

11. What is the most frightening thing that has ever happened to you?

He raises one eyebrow and I can see that the interview has ended. He will not tolerate my doubting his words. He is certain of what he has seen.

I dont feel like doing the interview thing, so i will just write about all the characters i have had.

Isildur from LHW and SGRV
Isildur was a very confident man with a proud history. He was a genuine person, always straight forward with people. He was skilled with the sword and bow, making him a deadly ally. He enjoyed being around people as he was a very social person. he liked to be a leader, but had respect towards his superiors. Isidur had quite an appetite and as he showed in SGRV he could almost eat his weight in food! Isildur was always loyal to his friends and would give his life for them, as he showed in LHW. Isildurs came from a family of rangers and because of that was in touch with the forest. Isildur loved just spending a relaxing day in the forest. Isildur had no real family, his mother died at birth and his father died when he was in his early teens. From then on Isildur had to look after himself with occasional help from his fathers friends.

There ya go RSF, anythin else u like to know?
