Balista
I never buy a balista in the start. It cost 2500gold and that is not something I NOT have afford to.(In Impossible or ekspert game)what do you mean foaks?

i have never bought them. i don't really use any arhcry skillz (unlesss i am Gelu) or Balista skillz, although these can be useful @ times

I would say itīs a big mistake NOT taking a balista with you..
First of all, itsīlike a unit which makes damage and has 250 hitpoints!!
Second, itīs damage raises with the attack skill of your hero!! (and with the secondary skill offense!!)
Third, if you learn artillery, your damage will increase more, balista will shoot twice AND do double damage!!
Fourth, itīs a good "fodder" for the enemy units, especially at the beginning of the game. If you try it, you will see, that enemy units like to attack the balista when they can reach it, and wonīt attack your other units.
So i suggest you try it on your next games and you will see the usefullness of a good balista..

Doesn't the damage increase with archery? It's a ranged unit after all.

Ballista is even more powerful with a ballista speciality hero.

Well i've done 90% of all the hard campaigns without one i've never used 1. from your arguments it seems only useful if you have archery or artilery skillz, unless you have mega high attack .and it will always hit random targets unless u have that skill say ther are 40 pit lords u want to attack and ther are 3 other units on the feild it will have a 1/4 chance of hitting them unless u control the artilery which means u need basic-expert artilery for it to be effective

Iīm not talking about campaigns.
They are built to have hugh armies....normaly...
But when u play online against human players, u will meet much earlier than against the comp.
Even on XL-map, u wonīt reach month3..
So here the balista is very important.
How often do ya see, that a horde of walking dead (or similar units) is blocking the road near your castle. Itīs first week....you will see how usefull a balista is in that moment..and not only in that...itīs only an example..

Sure you are right, itīs archery which raises the damage of a balista, not offense

I have played this game for too many years..hehe. If you want capitol i the first week(first day in the secong week), then we can`t buy a balista, beacouse is cost to much gold. More army instead of a balista. If you are a mage...is it not wise to buy it..You understand. mage have no attack skill. Must have balista skill or sky high attcack on your hero to get any use of it.

ah hello ballista= ranged unit even if you can not aim you can still do etc damage to your opponent then you would without one and your opponent if there comp will often waste time attacking it just use it as a decoy while you move your most powerful unit in for the kill. they ah also cheap enough to be expendable to some degree since you can defeat ai before they destroy it normally and humans simply ignore it

but carefull...
ballistae can mean you're death, if you don't have the balistics skill, because then strikes randomly and can unblind the creatures you blinded and that can make you loss a battle/game

I've had those annoying moments when the next battle phase starts and a creature is unblinded because of a Ballistae... Truely one of the most annoyingly useful HoMM 3 weapons

Some heroes may have a ballista for free ;-) A new hero + ballista for 2500 may be a good investment.
