Astrology

What do people think of it?

For me, it's a love/hate thing.  Anything that has to do with planets gets my attention.    As a quasi-religious system, it has its appeal as well.  I like the symbolism, the archetypes, the intertwined associations.

However, the practice is bunk.  Aside from problematic explainations of its mechanism, it only "works" insofar as people want it to work.  For me, my sun-sign description never applies more than halfway, and chart interpretations are even more psychobabble nonsense.  Some people identify with the personality embodied by their sign.  But I avoid "what's your sign?" because my sign misrepresents my personality (I suppose I could lie and claim to be a Pisces/Virgo cusp , but what's the point?).

So, that's where I stand.  Where is everyone else?

Yes

Orion's belt is my only constallation that gives me re-assurance. When I was in the airforce, I was trained for navigating in the densely forested northern mountain ranges of New Mexico. While we were out there practicing, using our equipment, turning nvg's on/off to use our maps and such, we sat down for a short breather during a night nav. On the side of this mountain we sat, with plenty of cover and concealment. The bright city lights were to the south and behind the mountain we were on. There were three of us. One of the guys I went to an opposing highschool with and I knew him well. We joined the military at the same time and trained along the way with each other for three years. The other guy was another trainee sent in from florida. He was of oriental descent and had the largest muscles I'd ever seen. Anyway, it was dark, we were whispering and the guy from florida sat between my buddy and I. He poked the two of us and pointed up. He whispered to see the clearness of the stars without the haze of city lights. I looked up for the first time in my life and it was amazing. I turned on my nvg's to get a better look but it wasn't the same. My teammate from florida told us all this stuff about Orion's belt as he pointed it out to us. Both my friend and I hadn't ever thought about the stars as much until that night. I had never really seen them so clearly. Ever since that night, If it is night time and I am anywhere in the world, I look up to see how well I can see the Orion's belt. I had many more compass runs and other such treks in that city and others and I always looked up to see the constallation. Unfortunately, as the astrologers of the past found, the constallations are not always in the sky and sometimes they cannot be seen because of the thick haze of light eminating from large cities.

Every time I looked up and didn't see the constallation I was sort of depressed but I would tell myself that it was still there even if I couldn't see it as I did that one night in northern New Mexico. Sometimes I have seen the constallation but it wouldn't always be positioned the same and I would have to bend, or lean, or tilt my head in order to see the stars as the greeks saw them.

I guess that's my only thing about astrology. I love the planets and all the details about them but none give me the comfort of Orion's belt.

I personally like astronomy (study of about anything outside the planet earth) in a scientific aspect. But I simply fail to understand how anyone could possibly pay any attention to the whole concept of astrology.

ack...link mania

By astrology, I am referring to horoscopes, zodiac signs, divination, etc.  Sky-watching, besides being really cool, is amateur astronomy, which is a science (for fun: tour of Orion).  There are very few people who deny astronomy -- the Catholic Church did finally apologize to Galileo.  The zodiac signs aren't even connected to the constellations any more (see here).

Astronomy!
Astrology!

With that all-important distinction out of the way, that astrology site also has in-depth sun sign descriptions, so people can check them out and see for themselves how accurate they are.  Be sure to browse through more than just the one listed for your own birthday.

Well, we can call it quasi-religios system but in general the astrology is a part of the ocult philosophy. This one came for sometime ago from the way thinking featured for all of us. Everything in the world was a  symbol for everything, there were no differencies, no identities, just symbols.

The breath was the same thing with the soul... Saying chariot  meant that a chariot had just pass through your mouth, and so on...
About the fact that your halfrepresented by your sign is  that things are a little bit complicated: it is not just your sun-sign that counts but also your ascendent...

i notice that there could be traits in alot of zodiacs which define me in some ways.

I never really looked but I'm sure of it. Though gemini dose fit my personality rather well; if I were to investigate mayhaps I would think others fit me just the same.

All Right Then Miss-Astrology

I'm a Taurus. I know this means stubborn and that I am a bull-headed male. I just want to say, in my defense, I'm not an uber-extravert to my friends, only to jerks that I meet in real life. If anyone wants to morph a picture of a bull's face with my avatar, then I suppose it would be appropriate but only when I meet real life jerks mind you.

I like the whole aura that surrounds the zodiac, and when you read the 'traits' of your sign, Scorpio does seem to fit me quite nicely.
But as far as the horoscope column goes, I usually read YESTERDAY'S stars to see if they were right.
Usually they're not, but occasionally there have been spooky coincidences.....

I like astrology very much. Its appeal is mostly due to its supernatural elements and the complexity of the sience is a challenge itself. But I attach a whole new psychological perspective, so that it turns for me more into psychology than astrology. It helps conversations going in interesting directions, discussing people profiles, relations and that sort of stuff. One of my friends is practically an astrology witch, so I cannot possibly miss a decent amount of the astrological knowledge she spreads.

I don't believe that astrology has any real credibility however, but the psychological effect on people caused by its popularity is an interesting thing indeed. I belive people tend to identify with their zodiac signs and when reading about its characteristics they think: "Oh yeah, like most gemini I'm communicative too." And that strengthens their self-confidence and slowly they begin to emphasize, even "enforce" the communicative side of their personality. Also, when an astrologer says "You are often bad-tempered", they try to accept that as a part of their character too and move closer to knowing their true selves. Or even more, when you read constantly that "you are open-minded", even though you might not be, you begin to believe in that idea personally and create a false image of yourself.
That is how I explain the coincidences when people match with their zodiac sign traits.
However, I think that horoscopes done on daily basis are pure BS.

I'm an Aquarius myself, and I think my personality matches a great deal to the Aquarian one. Maybe I was the victim of the same psychological effect I described.

I didn't know anything about the zodiac until I was about twenty. Ever since I was little, everyone said I was  Taurus to a "T". I didn't understand what they meant until I started reading about my Zodiac sign. Talk about Freaky, don't understand how interpreting the position of stars can explain so much about how I think and act. I don't follow astrology just find it humorous and intriguing.

I don't think much of it myself, especially broad generalisations like "you're a taurus, so you must be..." and the newspaper horoscopes that never tell you anything unless you ring their £1 a minute phone line

Specific astrology might have something to it, however IMO, much like mind-readers, fortune tellers and so on, much of whether we think it's accurate will depend on how much faith we have in it in the first place. Too many people live their lives by such things that they make the astrology come true rather than see if it will anyway.

I think astrology is a load of bollocks.
I acknowelage the fact that the alignment of planets, stars
and other similar space objects can have imact on human behavior, but claiming that the aligment of the aforementioned on the day a person is born will effect his/hers characteristics is insane.
I know a person that prayed to God that her niece is born a week early, so that she becomes a libra and not virgo.
