Your Life's Scariest Moment

Can you recall the scariest moment(s) of your life?

I have been thinking about this all day.  It is a result of something very scary that happened to me this morning...

Since it was such a warm, beautiful, and sunny day, I decided to take my two year old son outside to play in our backyard.  We live on an island, so there is a lot of vegetation, animals, insects, etc. everywhere.  I was holding my one year old daughter while we were busy walking up and down a small ramp leading to our storage shed.  After about thirty trips up and down the ramp, my son says "Daddy, chase you?", which when translated, actually means, "Daddy, chase ME?" since he has not fully grasped the concept of pronouns and objects in the English language.  Anyway, I give him a few seconds lead time to begin running before I catch him.  So he immediately runs off toward the flower garden, where he climbs up the surrounding wooden railroad-ties and up into the actual flower bed.  As I am approaching him with my daughter in my arms, I catch something shiny in my field of vision directly below where my little boy is standing.  I stop dead in my tracks, as I see what appears to be a three-foot long snake protruding out from under the wooden railroad-ties directly below where my son is standing.  My heart jumps to my throat and my stomach sinks, as I know there are many poisonous snakes here in North Carolina, especially on the island.  In my most relaxed yet firm voice, I instruct my son to stop moving as I cast him the most serious glance yet shared in our lives to this point.  He immediately freezes as he senses that something is wrong, especially since daddy has suddenly stopped being playful and the tone of my voice has drastically changed.  As I slowly inch closer to my son in hopes of removing him from harm's way, I exhale an unbelievable sigh of relief as I realize that it is not a snake lurking under the wood, but rather the sloughed skin of a snake that it just shed.  Talk about stress relief!

We then decided to go back in the house and celebrate our narrow escape of a potential deadly situation by having some apple juice and animal crackers.  It was an eventful morning for us all.

So, of course, I had to go and recover the sloughed snake skin and measure it...39 inches in length!

That's my scary story for the day.  I will have to go do some memory jogging in order to find my scariest moment, which may take me a while, as there as I have had quite a few scares in my life.  Thanks for listening and I hope to hear your scary stories as well.

Yes...

I've been there my friend. It's one of those times where I usually realize my mortality is quickly fading. My heart is usually so struck with terror that it feels as if it is going jump out of my chest. I usually, require a 10 minute nap after such occurrences.

Usually for me though, it involves one of my kids reluctantly/ignorantly jump in the road while on a stroll through the neighborhood. My son is 5 and my daughter is 4. I hold the infant while trying to scream, run, and snatch the little buggers from certain doom. You can imagine and relate to that old analogy of a "deer in the headlights".

A cross between either:

When I nearly died drowning in a pool on Holiday, where I lost conciousness and had to be pulled out and brought back.

Or

When I was caught in a house fire that gutted the building. I recall being trapped in a room with the door getting hotter and hotter and there being no way out before the fire brigade arrived.

I'm not sure if it was the scariest, but it's the thing that comes to my mind at the moment.

I was at my friend's house making a project on his computer for school. It was three of us. Suddenly, the machine broke, like the elecricity had gone wrong or something. But the electricity was fine.
He started inspecting all the cables, and after a detailed search, he discovered the flaw. The main fat cable was totally split in two. He turned it off electric power, grabbed it in his hands and started touching it. He then went to the kitchen, took a knife and started cutting the metal wires inside the cable (i dont know why, but irrelevant). All of a sudden, while he was holding the cable towards his face, a huge bolt of sparks went off, like a real lightning bolt. It went about 20 cm from my face (cos I was sitting near him) and just below his face. My heart stopped. When we saw the knife (which was made of stainless steel), it had a hole right in the middle. He threw the cable and we all got out of the room like crazy. After few moments a hysterical 10 minutes laughter attacked us all. When we settled a bit, we entered the room and looked at the cables again just to see that... we had turned off the wrong cable (from the TV) before acting electricians.

well not very scary but kinda funny...
one crazy night after lots of drinking i hit the french door with my head so hard that it knocked me back for 2 meters. what's more the lights of the house went out because of a short circuit or something else.
I lay on the ground in a shock for a minute or two until my friends picked me up.

This is kinda scary in another sort of way:

The scariest moment of my life, was when I realised that the woman I loved and had lived with for almost a year had left me, and that I was alone.

After some time I kinda understood that I'd meet someone else that I'd love some day, but for those minutes/hours/days/weeks/months that I thought my life was basically over, I was scared in a way that can only be described by a phrase from Edgar Allan Poe´s "The Raven":

"And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!"

- Thats scary..

Why, thank you Khayman!!!
Anyways here goes the scary story.
In 1988 one of the most disasterous earthquakes of 20th century hit my hometown in northern Armenia. I still remember that day in all details though I was only 5 years old. It was i think 11:30 in the morning and i was playing in the living room while my mother and grandmother were having breakfast in the kitchen. Suddenly I noticed that the books began falling out of the shelves and I found it pretty funny until the tv fell down and crashed. that just freaked me out. After that everything was like in a dream. I remember my mom rush into the room pick me up and leave the house. the frickin second wave lasted almost a minute and i remember how the ground below me shook with a terrible noise and with all that dust and stuff. Gosh that was really terrible. Fortunately no one was hurt in the family but my pregnant cousin died and some other close relatives. After that my family was evacuated to Moscow where I lived for almost a year before returning to my home country.

Right now I can only recall one scary moment, I don’t know if it’s the scariest but it really scared me.  When I was seven my family decided to go camping.  We had packed for a big trip and drove deep into the mountains.  After driving for hours, our truck had somehow gotten stuck in a swamp.  We had tried to free the truck, but it was no use.  About 50 meters from the swamp was a nice little prairie and we decided to make camp.  It was a nice location, and there was no one for miles.  My shoes were wet from the swamp so I was walking around barefoot.  I had decided to explore the area.  I found a little hill and thought I could get a better view if I was at the top of it.  At the bottom of the hill were some nasty plants; they had spikes and needles.  So I carefully avoided them.  On the way to the top, there were many logs on the ground.  I walked on the logs because it was more comfortable for my bare feet.  I was constantly switching from walking on the logs to the grass.  Then I stepped on a black log, it was hollow and it moved as I stepped on it.  As I placed my foot on the log, it began to scream and rattle.  The sound pierced my heart; the log was a Rattlesnake (Extremely Poisonous Snake) nest.  I don’t know how many were in there, but I think that it was a large amount.  As soon as I heard that sound, I ran down the hill as fast as my legs could carry me.  I ran though all those nasty plants, not even noticing the pain.  I ran all the way back to camp.  When I got back to camp I went straight into my tent.  My feet were covered in needles from the plant, but I was grateful that those snakes didn’t get me.

woah, you guys had some experiences...
Well, I can think of two situations atm that I would consider scrary (the second less then the first)

the first would be our moving. We actually moved only into a bigger house only two doors next to our flat and so we did it ourselves. both doors stood wide open and everyone was quite buisy. My little brother was 1 and a half year old then maybe and he could only crawl.
As we decided to take a break, we realized that the little guy was gone. We searched in panic, I think, anyone of us imagined the horrible picture of him being ran over by a car. After, let's say 10 minutes my older bro found him at the playground. Some kids of the neighbourhood must have "found" him and taken him with them to the playground as noone was near. I think I never felt a greater relieve up to now..

The second happened on a rainy day.
I bought a new PC game (D2:LoD^^) with a friend and on our way back to his hose, it began to grumble and rain. We hurried to his house ad went upstairs. We started to read the manual excitedly as the light began to flicker and a little white-yellowish flash zapped out of the sound boxes of his CD-player and zapped through the room.
After that we went down and his parents turned off the electricity for upstairs^^
