Pushing the limits

I've heard most of the pros saying "the AI is pathetic" or "playing single-player is a piece of cake" or anything.

I don't have the financial conditions to play on the net or multiplayer. I've only played several games with my friend at his house. So, unlike many of you I'll probably be stucked with the Artificial "Intelligence" for a very long time.

Is really single-player always too easy? I want to know if more experienced players ever play single-player. I mean, there are certain options on random map that could make the game a lot more difficult. Not only the difficulty level, but also teaming up your opponents, XL maps, random town and hero for everybody etc.

Main question: What are the hardest conditions that you play with and still menage to win? Have you reached the limit and can you say there's absolutely no random map that you cant win?

I usually play on "queen" level, XL map and all random towns (meaning cant choose town or hero), but I never team up my opponents. Sometimes I also play on the hardest level. It has worked pretty balanced for me, and I usually win this way.

Well I don't claim to be a pro...
And to be honnest, I am far from being the best against computer... I actually consider I am better when playing against a human than a computer(that also goes for the computer controlled creatures in multiplayer)...

But for me, the best I managed to do was... to beat 7 computers on impossible me being all random(them too)... I do not know any situation where the computer is fun to play against... There should be some sort of file u can get to make the computer a lil more intelligent... But seriously, computer is no fun once u've taste online playing...

I only enjoyed doingt he campaigns cuz it enabled me to learn the whole story...

So as I said, get ur friends to play hotseat

This is really tough...

200% small map 2 allied players vs 3 allied comps. No modification of rmg - used the one that came with the game.

We won! On our first try! yeaaay! It was amazingly hard to defend against level 4, 5 and 6 units with mostly level 1 and 2 hehe, but we did it

The small map makes for an instant skirmish, and the 200% and 3 allied comps means that you're in for a spanking if you dont play veeeery good

Well... I can say very sure of my self that whoever said yes the AI is bad was so very true. Let me explain you my last encounter with the single-player game(excepting campiagns). I wanted to see if I can beat 7 computers at the last mark of difficulty, all alied with different types of catsles. I was with conflux.

So what do you know. After 2 months i got a scroll: Armaggedon. So got myself those cool phoenixes(who have the best speed) and got them all tied up. Now I never tried this game with another computer( i think i'll get myself a defeat).

Like Shai said... I did virtually the same thing, cept we were all randoms...

I got fortress and beat the computer by fighting with my might... I'm sorry, unless there is a patch to improve the AI... its quite hard to do...

Only way I can think of, even tho I haven't tried it is, if you are starting a game on impossible, the computer starts with a few level 7s and has a castle 1 day walk away from yours. Or a scenario quite similar to that...

Ok ... you want a veteran eh ?

Well ... i'll talk about Heroes III (Restoration of Erathia , Shadow of Death)

Ok ... the AI in these games is pretty weak ... i mean i managed to play Islands & Caves against computers at the hardest difficulty level and i managed to kill even the last one .... and i have a screenshot i will never lose or delete .... the army that i won with , after the battle remained :

1 familiar that i found just before the battle ....

Is it luck or talent ? Or is the AI so dumb it didn't kill that imp ?

This was my extreme situation and the proof of the poor AI in this game ...

Well...

The computer (a.i.) is so dumb. It's unbelievably stupid.

If you want a really tough game then do this:

random medium map with two levels

1 human /vs./ 2 allied comp

You use Fortress Town and with Verdish as starting heroine

Make surface computer Necropolis/Make underground computer Dungeon

Monster strength = Easy(weak)

Difficulty = Expert(200%)

Choose resource as starting bonus(wood/ore for Fortress)

LoL.....good luck and don't forget to make the monster strength Easy.

wow pirahana u beat ALL THOSE CREATERS with what u had lol unbilivablue that means enemy AI must BE TERIBLE if he lost with that army well actually it is beliveble maybe u had a very good heroe i once had a similar battle but i was actually attacking a castle and i don't have a screenshot but he had the better stats more troops and he was inside the castle and it was imposible it was then i realized that computer AI during fights is pathetic cause well i won and i did it with a very usefull spell when it is on expert berserk when u got fire expert and berserk it can affect the entire enemys army not that it did on my case but it did for he's 4 main troops and killing the rest with my archers and archangels and grifons was a shinche without that spell i would have lost because it kept he's crusaders halbardires champions and marksmen busyy hehe all through the battle ^^.

Well...

54 archangels vs 49 archdevils
60 champions vs 99 effreet sultans
75 zealots vs 109 Pit Lords
126 crusaders vs 11 ghost dragon
91 royal griffin vs 153 cerberi
327 marksmen vs 344 magogs
512 Halberdier vs 1 familiar

First of all, I don't know how managed to have such a crappy army against the comp... BUT IMHO it was still a stronger army, tho I'm wondering where his demons were.

Hey, dont brag about that one time when u got the Ai beaten up. Yeah, a crown achievement, I guess.
Tell me about a regular basis. And I dont know who that guy was, who took conflux for himself and kicked some artificial butt; try with weaker castles; and try to ally your opponents.
The thing is I think we still got a lot of place for challenge against the AI. Again, I want to hear the pros and what they have to say (imo like Lews, haile, Wub, Xarfax, sorry if i missed some)

You're probably going to get a different answer from everyone.  You really have to tailor the game to meet your own needs.

Myself, I only play random medium-sized, above ground maps with no water.  With kids, I can only spend about an hour or two playing, so no sense getting involved in long-term maps.

Try creating variations or themes that fit your playing style.  Variables which you control and can adjust are :

1) Maximum # of heroes allowed :
If you cap this at 3 on medium-sized maps, it can limit your scouting abilities . . . this can give the AI somewhat of an advantage . . . let me tell you, it gets tricky defending 5 castles with 3 heroes . . . it also limits your ability to chain . . again, you can playtest to determine what works for your style

2) Restricted schools of magic
Let's face it, expert earth magic is a game breaker.  But, what if you refused it every time it was offered.  Having to rely on basic spells will give you more strategy options.  Slow can still be a valuable spell, the strategy falls on which stack to use it against.  Simply refuse to take any spell school, and if give the choice between two, don't take Earth or Air.  I find it balanced to take Expert Water Magic for a Mass Cure spell to offset CPU spellcasters.

3) Using no magic
Similar to Yog's campaign, this can be a refreshing change of pace.  Granted, it takes away a huge part of the game, but when playing Stronghold, it seems to fit, especially for those that feel Crag Hack is too good.  Just don't buy your hero a spell book.

4) No splitting of stacks
An interesting variation, but think about it.  How many strategies are hinged on strategic splitting of armies?  If you couldn't do it, how would your strategy be affected???

There are probably many more variations or options that you can choose to enhance your style of play.

Good luck.

I'm far from being a good player... but I like playing with my luck.

I got one master gremlin in my castle vs. no shooting units, spellcasters (hero with no spell points), no flyers, but larger amount of poweful units (to kill the gremlin): 20 mighty gorgons, 4 pit lords, 2 hydras etc.

I still managed to kill them... I had a hero with no spell points, but with expert archery man, how I was lucky... I didn't move with my gremlin, ended turns and attacked with arrow towers I managed to defeat it.. I could not believe that, since it was "impossible" and I achieved my highest rank ever: "archangel"...

though, it was only luck... though, tactics like these when you know the enemy strength and your weakness are very valuable sometimes.

Actually .... this battle took place in the 3rd month week 1 day ??
ok
Axsis was level 29 and that bloody moron was way higher ...
my spells were weak ... very ...
He throwed a couple of implosions at me taking serious damage ... so i was lucky to win ... just think ... i managed to get to the third month in imperial on a "heavy" map ... anyway ... that battle wasn't my style ...

i usually play "safe" ... i don't let many of my units die so easily ....

Answered all your questions ?
