Hi. What happened to my last profile. Hell knows..probably got deleted cos of no-usage. Well lets forget it and go back on-topic.
This happened to me with couple of games and hell knows why. I have downloaded homm3 complete and that means it is extra-pirated, warez, etc. and it works perfectly. So it seems that nothing that is coverd in this topic works for you and i have only few suggestions here: 1) try 'repairing' your winXP installation 2) Reinstall whole windows 3) call someone that realy knows about computers. And if nothing works return the god dang cd back to shop and/or consider having my kind of luck.
P.S its realy bizzare that you have problems with legit game.

Maybe both your drives are H3-unfriendly, Wooop.
Maybe you can borrow someone's external usb drive to try that.
Have you tried virtual drive things yet? Maybe it helps.

Can't help with XP because I don't use it but a little while ago I had a similar problem.  Installation possible but no longer possible to play - I guess probably due to the CD that has quite a number of scratches on it, well basically it's one big scratch  Solved the problem eventually by installing WOG.  You don't 'have to' use any of the WOG options but you'll still be able to play without a CD.  Maybe this helps?

I hate it when people say legal games have to compete with pirate versions.....

The good thing is that you are not a thief, primarily.
You also support developers and stores, but that reason will never stop pirates. There should be a lot of prosecution, random house checks and such.

Well legit and pirated games are competing heavily. In fact you have to choose between high price, but guaranteed quality(with exeption with our case here) and low or(if you download from interenet) no price, but you have no guarantee that pirated/downloaded game will work properly if work at all. Well if that game is meant to play thru internet like warcraft3, diablo2 and ofcourse famous world of warcraft you have to buy legit one. Its your choice.
P.S. I recommend choosing quality over low/no price IF you have the money.

Firstly, quality is not guaranteed for legit games. There are bugs, patches, and troubles they won't fix cause they think they are done with the game. Like in Heroes 4.

And if you get the game for nothing, and that would be "legal", that always gives a better price/quality rating. Unless your time is very valuable.

Zarniwooop, when the error report comes up or whatever, there is a way to get details usually. i am a C++ programmer and if you can send me the hex/memory dump in the error report i may be able to figure out what the problem is.

if anyone gets mad at me for saying the following i simply dont understand....

ok, i have homm3 complete, i baught it. my cd-drive is curently broken, so i simply use the crack to play the game. also, even if the cd-drive worked, i would use the cracked version because it takes up less effort- e.g putting the cd in, taking it out, etc. less ware and tear on cd drive too.

since you legitimatley baught the game, i would be willing to give you a link to download the entire game from my website and give that stuff a try. it is already uploaded. the purpose of the game being on my site was originally for backup purposes, but if you wish i will chmod the settings on my server to 644 so you can access the link. then once u hav downloaded it i will make the file 700 and private again. if u dont want to dl it from my site i can send it over AIM, i dont care either way works.

if you dont want to do any of this, i would ask you to generate an md5/sha-1 checksum on all the files in the 3do directory and send it to me. google for fsum if you are confused. checksums will help us verify u dont have a corrupt file in your 3do directory.

i downloaded fsum and have generated a list of tiger hashes for all the heroes 3 complete files i have currently... obviously certain files are not important if they are different than yours, e.g. the ones that store high scores and snow because that crap changes. obviously certain files are unimportant. and i chose tiger to generate these checksums because personally i think it is the most secure algorithm... ummm, here is the list and cmdline i used to generate the file w/ the list.

fsum.exe -r -tiger -dC:Heroes~1 *.* > C:Checksums.txt

wow

Was out of town a couple days.  Just caught the red-eye home.

I'll look at your suggestions in detail tomorrow.

I'll generate that report and send it when I can here.

Basically, I'm baffled.  The CD isn't scratched even a little.  I've scanned my hard drive for errors using a variety of tools.  The CD is fine since I tested it on other systems.

Other people play it fine with xp pro and the latest version of DX. I don't see why I cannot.

To the poster several posts up - thanks for the insight, but my problem isn't trying to play off the install disk.

And my old PC is a 233 with a broken fan that runs heroes like a lawnmower in long weeds.  Just about unplayable.

H3 Complete and Windows XP

Just got a new laptop, runs XP (assuming home ver.) Everything loads fine and then I freeze up on the intro movie. I also get the following error: Direct X is not compatible with this version of Windows. Tried installing DX 7.0 instead of 9.0 to no avail. Runs and loads fine on my old desk top with Windows 98. This is the only game I play on a regular basis, and I am getting really bummed that I cant use my laptop! Somebody, Anybody, please help!!!!!

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. I've tried adjusting the compatibility, reloading, virus, EVERYTHING I can think of! Do you think it's because I installed it with my CDRW/DVD drive? Is it possible to install it on the laptop via the desktop? I realize I probably grasping at straws by now, but I want my Heroes!

Try changing the compatibility mode to W98 then:

Quote:
1. Right-click the program icon on your desktop or the shortcut on the Start menu for the program you want to run, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Compatibility tab, and change the compatibility settings for your program.

I tried every compatibilty setting available. 98 and 95 both said Windows error and 2000 and NT would show at "Testing" screen and then load and get stuck on the intro movie. The only way out of there was F4...

Yes, if a game runs on W98 that doesn't mean it runs on W98 compatibility mode.

Have you tried borrowing someones usb external cddrive and putting your cdrom in there (I don't even think you have to reinstall; it's which drive the disk is in when the game starts)

Maybe some brands of cddrive work with H3 in XP, others don't.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this but assuming you've acquired the game through legal means I really cant see any harm in this: You could try installing no-cd crack. In some games the movies are run from the cd.

BTW, is it the game intro or the nwc/3do jingles that cause the game to crash?

This is actually the 2nd Heroes cd I've bought. I exchanged the first with the second, thinking that might help minor Direct x issues w/my desktop (fixed by deleting 9.0 and running 7.0) I get it to run to where there is a rotating planet with a sword thru it... says "Testing." Then the intro movie with the chick coming off the ship and talking about Erathia, etc. It freezes up during testing and I have to alt f4 to get out. Never stuck with it long enough to see what happens and the end of the intro movie...

Well, we figured it out! You know how you can hit a key during the intro movie and go straight to the first "menu?" When the game does it's first "run" after install, you have to let that @%#$ movie play all the way through! After that you are good to go and can skip the start up movie.
I wasn't able to skip the movie and thought I had no keyboard or mouse control, making me think it was freezing up. Apparently the testing screen that comes up really is testing A/V clear thru the first run of the intro movie...duh. I'm only admitting my stupidity so that nobody else gets stuck like this, LOL!
Thanks sooo much for all your help! And patience...

Somehow I got to skip that intro movie... Me and a friend were really not in the mood for watching the intro movie after installation.

We consecutively pressed the Escape button. Then, we held the Ctrl button and hit the Tab button to get out of the game. Then, we reclicked and saw the menu. Hmm...

My version of DirectX is 8.1 right now. This to take away the doubt in a statement made previously. I can play HoMM III Complete.
