QP's aren't given just for posts that necessarily contribute to the community (mind you, if it's a good post then it contributes in a good way), but to posts that are good quality. It helps people understand Maths better and they're overall quite helpful, and it's a nice healthy discussion. So yes, they deserve QP's because they do add to the community.

Oh and if you don't think Mozart is a genius (he was a genius at music) then you have problems.

I am probably misunderstanding something here.
To me it seems like first you write, qp's aren't given based on if people understand the post or not.
Secondly you write it's because it helps people understand the terms described in the post.
To me there's something wrong as it seems like you're writing people both aren't understanding and understanding at the same time and I think I don't quite understand your post in that light.

I don't think music without message through words are worth anything. It's all about interpretations and as much a problem as you'd call someone who disagree with you of having a problem.

Thanks for the QP, but to be perfectly honest I didn't have any of my posts in mind when I suggested some QPs be awarded in the math thread.  But in any case, thanks for the thoughts, william.

As to what OD said: he has a point.  The opinion of one moderator as to what constitutes a "quality post" is rather subjective.  Fair awarding of QPs depends heavily on user feedback.  I would encourage the rest of you to post in the feedback thread when you read a post that you consider to be more [humorous, informative, insightful, inspiring, or entertaining] than the average post at HC.  QPs should be a way to encourage quality posting, not discourage it!  If you like a post, say as much.  Even if the post isn't ultimately awarded a QP, you'll make the person who posted it feel better about themselves, you'll encourage them to post more high quality posts, and you'll improve the general atmosphere here.  Which, really, is what the QP system is supposed to be about in the first place.

Showing high skills in your field without being able to share it with others alone isn't enough.

But they are sharing it with others. By your logic QPs can only be awarded to post that every member can relate to. By that logic the Glade, the temple (not all of us play Heroes anymore mind you), the altar and the osm should be QP devoid. You'll never find something that EVERYONE thinks is awesome. The meassurement of QPs shouldn't be how many people can relate or understand the post if it's a good/exceptional post that is that. That's all it needs to be.
And the posts in the math thread are exceptional, wheter you/the majority of us understand them or not. Ergo they should finally get some QPs. It's not all that difficult.

And I agree with what Corribus said, mods either have a hard time reading all those posts or simply aren't up to speed either way he's right it can't hurt and it should improve the spirit on the board which has unfortunately been kinda dwindeling lately. Atleast in my oppinion.

I guess you're not being very objective then. But nevermind my example didn't seem to be simple enough.

One of the things I try to do is get people involved in the QP process.  Even the Glade, I prefer the people who post there to suggest a post for a QP.  Then I prefer for a few others to agree.  Why?  Because QP's ARE subjective.  There are a LOT of good posts out there, but remember it is the top 2 PERCENT that get the +QP.  For instance in the Glade, if I gave a QP for every post I thought was excellent, there would be a LOT of red in there.

I am not stingy with the rewards, but I value the communities input on the matter.  Like Omega, I don't want people over looked because of MY bias on what is good.  Sure, I can just give penalties and bonuses arbitrarily, but I prefer FEEDBACK..so that the community has a voice in these things.  Oh, but wait, I am the worse Mod ever , so maybe I shouldn't do that .

Nah more feedback can only be a GOOD thing.

I thought you were dead or something. So how's it going?

You left the glade because you didn't get QPs? You didn't accidentally like the RPGing? 'cause doing something you like is absolutely bad if you don' get respect, awe, power and money?

lawyers...

PS. The floodprotect with QPs is an excellent choice in my opinion. It will at least slow the people, who only spam, down. I vote for dropping the 20 post limit outside of VW to 15 or maybe even 10 too.

PPS. Didn't lexxan rant hugely about QPs too? I don't really understand you people who do that. They're QPs, so what? Some get them, some don't. I don't really see a reason why I'd need them. I was all set with those two reds I had for years. I'm still kinda oblivious to those I have now. Maybe it's a capitalist thing. *shrugs*

I've never understood this top 2 percent business. What is it? I have heard it over all the years but have never understood it and it doesn't seem like just the top 2 percent get a QP.

Imagine that for a single user (or several persons for that matter) the 20 post limit doesn't work (i.e. this person is not bound by any limits).

Until fixed, what should this person do? Make sure to not post more than 20 posts pr. day outside of vw? What if the person refused to do this manually, should he then get a penalty if posting more than 20 posts outside vw?

William.  Well it is not a 'hard and fast' rule.  It is a guideline.  Of course, what passes for quality can change..especially when Moderators change.  However, it basically means 'only the best of the best' should get Quality Points.  Since we rarely 'undo' quality points, however, it has some leeway.  Can be the 'best of the best' of a certain time frame for example.

We want to acknowledge those who put a lot of time and effort in their post, as well as what is in the post itself.  If we just flooded every little thing with +qp it would not be such an acknowledgement.

Ohforf
I have never heard of this happening, and never expect to.  However, said person should alert the Moderators, Send and Email to Val, and yes keep a track of their own posts.  Since most likely that would not happen however, and there is no way a Moderator could possibly keep track of EVERYBODY's number of posts..I doubt it would ever be discovered otherwise.

But aren't you deleting those threads in VW that gets qp's, thereby deleting posts which gets qp, but not the qp itself? If true, that seems a bit odd, and give the funny possibility of N, where N being any number, qp's with zero posts.

Edit: About the posting limit, it was just an example of why it's rather meaningless to specify rules upon everyone just because there's a risk of someone might not behave. After all, even if the mod knew exactly who it was about and it was few enough for them to keep track on, would you really start give penalties out to completely normal posts? I really doubt it. The proper way is to let everyone have unlimited posts and then, when someone doesn't behave, then only limit these people.
It's much like back in Denmark in the 60's, people banned jipsies from public places, because they said jipsies stole stuff. In reality, it was discrimination (I don't jipsy is a race, if it is it's racism, but anyway it shouldn't matter what it's called), because it was a few jipsies who stole, ending up putting rules upon the whole group. Had a few danes been stealing (there've been thieves in any community for as long as the community itself, I'm convinced), then it wouldn't been all danes wouldn't be allowed to go to the public place where there had been stolen from.

The analogy holds in the way, that because of fear of disbehaviour, you put an, on many people, completely unnecessary limit up, which is like because of fear of jipsies are stealing (disbehaviour), a, on many people (those who aren't going to spam), completely unnecessary limit is set up. Sure it might not be discrimination, because it applies for everyone at some point, but it doesn't matter if it's called racism, discrimination or whatever, because that's just telling about the 'reason'/excuse of those who acts wrong, no, the problem is limiting freedom unnecessary, which is what is wrong and the reason behind it doesn't matter.
Anyway, as it's private property, it's of course completely up to the owner, and anything else would be limiting said persons freedom, I'm just trying to show that it's the wrong approach.

It's going.  Work is very busy and difficult.  Legal services tends to get the worst of the worst.  Often we don't have the capital to perform investigations, hire experts, or get documents like other attorneys, which makes cases tricky.  I'm convinced most of my clients are just mutants who want to make my life harder.  Seriously, you would need to consume large quantities of nuclear waste to make such incredibly poor decisions.  Hell, just today I found out one of my clients used the rent money they were supposed to give me to put in a court escrow account to move into a new place without telling me.  If a judge orders you to do X, you do X.  It's really that simple.  Too simple for my simpleton clients apparently.  Now I have filed a motion to withdraw because I don't want to get dragged down in court.  The worst part of it all?  They had a good case!  I could have easily crushed the opposing party's complaint (had it dismissed for lack of subject matter jurisdiction) and counter-sued successfully for about $3,000.  God forbid they actually listen to their attorney!  I guess I expected too much from an idiot who is repeatedly thrown in jail for back child support on 9 kids!  FREAKIN' MUTANT HILL FOLK!  We need licenses to practice law, perform medicine, and to drive, but it is apparently too much to have breeding licenses!

For example, a test question on your breeding license application could be this simple.

#5 - Please pick which name for a son you like best:
A) John
B) Kah-El
C) Dale Earnhert Sr. II
D) Ocho Sinco

If you pick anything but A, you should be instantly sterilized.

Anyways, long story short, work sucks but it's good experience at least.

I did enjoy it for a long time.  You forget that the War existed on another forum for about a year or so before it came here.  I needed the escapism when I was in law school.  Once I graduated, the need faded and I began to lose interest in fantasy worlds.  Plus it became increasingly difficult to be consistent in release dates and quality.

As to the QP thing, as I mentioned earlier, yes, I began to resent my work being overlooked compared to some of the other stuff getting awarded QPs.  It's not good to get irritated by something so trivial.  If something is bothering you, and you can do something about it, you should.

I did.

I stopped.

You know we, the members, did appreciate your posts. I think I don't speak only in my opinion if I say you were one of the best if not the best RPGer we had. Such a shame real life steals people from us.

Shame. I quess I just never saw RPGs as something like work to get rewards from. They've always been there to enjoy. Not that I get the QP hunting or jealousy anyways. I'm just not that kind of person to get irritated by something like that.

Alright so as some of you have probably seen, I have just received another penalty thanks to our great moderator, Elvin. Now why am I telling you all this in here? Because I think the penalty was a joke, that's why. It all started because I had called somebody a smartarse, to which Angelito warned me about. That's fine. I did disagree with his warning but that was all done and dusted. Then a member of the name of valkyrica replies to me saying:

Following all posts here, I tend to think you really look like your avatar.

Now, that's basically calling me ugly, because my display picture is a really ugly guy, or mutant or something. Now, is that not an insult? Could that not be taken as an insult? Calling somebody ugly or implying that they look like the avatar (an ugly guy) is an insult and is against the rules on this forum. Is that not correct? Now, aren't the moderators supposed to support those rules? Yes they are. So why is it that I get a penalty for saying this in reply:

Good one. Still, it's better than what you probably look like. Say, where is your picture? Are you THAT bad that you're doing us all a favour by sparing us? If that's the case then thanks. Didn't know you strolled out of the ToH. You should go back there, where nobody cares about you.

I have no idea. I have a few reasons as to why I may have gotten a penalty:

1) Implying that he is also ugly, which is what he also did towards me in the first place

2) Saying that nobody cares about him since he usually only responds in the ToH

3) I'm the bad guy in these forums so anything I say is going to be taken more harshly than what other members say

Do you not think that if I am insulted first and then reply with one as well, that BOTH people should get penalised or at least warned? I can understand that I was warned first, yes, but if somebody then attacked me by implying that I'm ugly and then me also saying that, why is it that I get a penalty? That's just inconsiistency at it's very best and is a disgrace in my opinion.

I can bet my life that if what I said was said by anybody else that it wouldn't have got a penalty. Right now, I've had several penalties and what I say is not going to go down well with most people. That's fine. But I do find it unfair when I'm treated unfairly just because of my nature and the way I have been as a member for all these years. Yeah, I've got penalties and I'm not the greatest member but does that mean I should have got a penalty which was a reply to somebody implying I was ugly? I may well find that as an insult, so where's the consistency here?

I really do think that this is one of the dumbest decisions I may have ever seen happen and would like an explanation as to why I was even given one in the first place and request that you either remove the penalty or give the other guy a penalty as well. At least be consistent.

I can also think of one other reason: spamming. But if that was the case as to why I got one then shouldn't multiple people have multiple penalties for spamming in the OSM? Still doesn't make any sense. You know?

I don't think that you get penalties because you are the bad guy (I've never seen Elvin operate this way). You may be getting penalties because you are the angry guy, however. See, your posts are always so full of emotions that they usually leave no room for doubt about your intentions or just simply look rude. The 'smartarse case' is a good example, even if you didn't mean anything by it your language is very blatant and therefore is much more prone to penalties.

All that being said, I can see the reasoning of both sides and am staying out of it.
