Svarog faces his adversary

(upon Khaelo's request... and my promise)

As some of you know, I’m behind enemy lines now. Not for long, until 31st August, and then I’m going back home. Hopefully, my cover won’t be blown by any of you guys. Although, some of you sent word to the US authorities of my presence, but I dealt with them in my own way.
I suppose Americans might be interested enough to hear what one foreign anti-capitalist, pacifist, anti-Bush national might think of their country.

A bit of intro first: I’m here as part of a summer program sponsored by the State Department, that deals with youth activism, civil society, democracy and leadership, the stuff that we, Third World countries don’t have. One month, all paid, just waiting for us to take it (but then again, they expect us to run community projects when we get back, so it’s not all that pink). Also, a part of the program was to spend 2 weeks in an American family, as a mean of “experiencing and actively participating in the typical American family”. Huh, my family, was all but typical, but I’ll get to that later.

I’m not gonna talk about what I did and where I was and so, but just the impressions. On a short note though, we’re staying in Towson (next to Baltimore), went to Washington, Annapolis, and in few days in New York. Every day, we had some activity going (whether it be academical or entertaining), so I had no time to take a breath. Maybe the most valuable knowledge that I gained was about the American political system. We attended lectures and had meetings with Congressman Cardin, politicians from the State Senate, the City Council, people from the media (TV and newspaper) and so on. I personally, also had very much contact with college professors, so we had some interesting discussions going. Now I have more insight in American politics (and part of that is thanks to you guys, esp. that thread about the elections when Khaelo explained me the elective process; and that gave me a solid base to learn more), just as Americans do.
And I gotta tell you guys, your two party system sucks! Not completely but it does suck. And the strange thing is the number of Yanks believe that it’s best of the best, the only one in the world which provides freedom and true democracy. You’re trapped in vicious circle of two choices, and don’t even know it. Democracy practiced in America is like two puppets, whose strings are both held by the same person. OK, choose then.
But one thing does stand – freedom! Yup, America is the land of freedom. Did you know that in USA you can stand peacefully in middle of Times Square and wave the swastika (the Nazi symbol), talk as much as you want about “the supremacy of the white men”, but it’s not allowed to spit on the right side of 7th Street in Baltimore?!
And one more thing – the medias. How do you guys manage to have 300 channals at the same time of which 87.4% are wasted on commercials?

I gotta tell you something, variety suffocates me. No wonder that the method that you turn to is advertising. You have no idea how many stupid and disgusting products I saw that are sold excellent, only because of marketing.
And the food sucks too. It’s tasteless, either like eating plastic or cupboard. I’m sorry that you haven’t tasted what a real fruit tastes like, only those artificial “things”, that are called strawberries or melons. All right, you’d say, it’s disgusting, but at least it’s cheap. Blasphemy! I had to pay 4$ for a pretzel, and in our country they are sold for 20 c, and taste better too! Salads are ugly, but are sold for 7$! They look nice though, with all the colous and the visualization, but once they enter your oral cavity – oh, the horrors!
However, clothes and electronics are the same price or even cheaper than in Macedonia, and the average American salary is like 10 times higher than ours. Exploitation at work.

OK, now that you’re sick of bashing, let’s try (real hard) to mention the positive parts and conclude this post with a warm feeling in our hearts.

This is indeed civilization. We, post-communist countries, talk all the time how in your society everything functions, everything works; but you don’t cross the street on red light, you don’t break street lights, you don’t throw litter on the ground, you don’t go around ripping off and destroying public green areas, you don’t enter public transportation without a ticket. We do these all the time.
In my country there’s not a single facility accessible for handicapped people. Here everything is accessible. The technological advance is higher than my dump. Although those street machines become annoying once they start eating your money.
But everything comes with a price, and I mean literally. You have to pay in order to use those conveniences. Pay BIG! But when something comes free, boy, that’s when we have fun. I went to a festival one day, and actually earned more money than I spent, and came back with a bag full of stuff (books, freebee, photos, yo-yo etc).

OK, that’s it for now. Have to go. Will write more later. Feel free to ask question in the meanwhile.

PS: Just now, I had a woman complaining that we were supposed to be quiet in the labrary. We were chuckling a bit. She said: "Eastern Europeans keep telling us we're boring, and they are sophisticated. In this country we obey rules." Ah, the cultural drift...

Svarog, save your breath, I hear from anti-capitalist, pacifist, anti-Bush people here in my own country everyday.  They are referred to as either liberals or Democrats.

I agree with you here, but not 100%.  The two-party system does limit your choices of candidates, while it usually produces party figure-heads or 'puppets'; however, the system of 'checks and balances' it provides usually keeps things in check.  Basically, it keeps the other party honest in regards to passing their agendas and reforms.  I, for one, would like to see a third-party candidate or campaign challenge this system; however, with the electoral college and with the stong party affiliation that some members had, I don't see this happening for a very, very long time unless the election process is overhauled.

Freedom of speech, my friend, which is usually abused or taken to the limit by some Americans.  The line is drawn when it comes to infringing on the rights of others.  There are some laws that may appear unfounded, but somewhere, somehow, somebody put the effort forth to make their ideas into the law.  I think in North Carolina, you can still beat your wife with a stick on your front porch Sunday mornings, as long as the stick is less than 1" thick.  Oh, the irony of it all!

No way!  Well, just wait until Wal-Mart makes it's way to Macedonia.  You may have eight million products to choose from, but sooner or later it will be the only store in town.

OK, but I'm not talking against democracy or the "checks-and-balance" system. The two-party limit is unrelated to them, and just stands absurdly on its own, cos removing it would mean a political harikiri for both the Democrats and the Republicans.

Ok, then. I have something to swear:

"I swear by the UPU, that I am against Wal-Mart and that all forms of Wal-Mart are against the teachings of holy Svarog, aka myself. I condemn Wal-Mart stores and shop assistants that sell or otherwise promote Wal-Mart products. I profess this with HC as my witness and in the belief that eternal separation from the good of Socialism will be my just reward if I fail to report any person or communication, that supports any Wal-Mart store, to local or national labour unions.
I further swear by IPU that I am against any who oppose free market except for those who work for USA or approve of American activities such as invasions, imperialism, propaganda, globalization, sweatshops, dominance, and torturing or other maltreatment of prisoners.
May all who fail to immediately report plans of Wal-Mart activists, and those in immoral trade –whether it be salads or pretzels– to labour unions be brought to a cruel end.
May one of the Socialist countries be converted to capitalism if I break my oath and may such evil be upon my head and the heads of the members of my immediate family and other near relatives.

Tasting the Big Apple

Before I continue on my impressions and answer Khaelo's questions (that she sent me; dont ask - intimacy ), as soon as I can, I'll just tell you that we just got back from the one-day excursion to the Big Apple.

New York is special. I didnt get to enter none of the important landmarks, but had a great time, cause I experienced it in a really unconventional way. The New York pizza, the crowds on the streets, the flashing billboards on Times Square, the stampeed of cars and cabs, it's all New York. Even the garbage under the Brooklyn Bridge and the cunning shop owners who managed to trick few of the guys.

When we got on the double-decker, we were like kids in a fun park for the first time. Nobody was chatting, and everybody was staring up high in the skyscrapers of Manhatten. But got to run by all of the landmarks, including the naked cowboy on Times Square (those of you who know, know).
And one funny thing was that the woman that guided us kept repeating this building is old, this is older, and they were talking about a period of 200 years ago! Hell, some of the pots my granma uses are way older than that! And remind me next time I come to America to bring all the stuff she has in the basement and present it is a museum exibition.

It only sucked that we had to go at 8PM, when it wasnt even dark yet! So, for us, the city that never sleeps, went to sleep at 8, and didnt see it in full bloom. Oh well, another reason to come next time.

I let this thread fall down the chart, without my promised post about what are Americans like and without answering Khaelo’s questions. I guess I’ll do that now that I’m back in Macedonia. Seeing as the majority of posts in this thread are written, ahem typed, by my skillful hand, I don’t think I’ll write more about USA. I don’t wanna be accused of selfish favoritism after all.

Khayman and I were planning a meeting but nothing happened (due to reasons I wont mention because of the possible dangerous implications on Khay’s integrity ), and partially I’m responsible since I made this stupid typo in the first sentence of this thread (see above; i wont edit) and mislead the guy into believing I’d be there one more month. But how the hell is that connected with the rest of you? Nohow. I just relish the fact that you spent time reading a few more lines of spam.

OK, here we go. What are the Americans like? (plus Khealo’s questions answered and carefully [note and remember this word when you finish reading] implemented in the text, in order to protect her integrity. Damn it! I’m like an intelligence agency with all these integrities.)

I must say that I didn’t change my impression about USA almost at all, before and after my visit. Meaning I either had a good teacher before (Americans on HC did a good job truthfully representing their ignorant and arrogant majority), or the Americans I met there did a bad job misrepresenting themselves as such.
I don’t know where to start, so I will set my brain on random, if you don’t mind.
At first glance, you can say that they are really friendly and open and easy-going, and they are, no doubt. But it looks like it’s just the polite way of interacting with people. I think you can talk to a guy for about two hours about the excitement of blinking, and he’ll just nod and smile all the time without saying “Shut the snow up! Don’t wanna hear it!” People are very polite everywhere you go, but it comes across to me as artificialness and enforced ethics. Sort of like those jolly girls that work in McDonalds. I still have doubts deciding which is better: that, or our right from the bottom of your soul juicy swearing and grumpiness (especially of shop assistants).

No, I did not have sex while I was there.

You have no idea how many times I heard the word “Sorry” while I was there. They apologize for everything. I was especially amused by the “territorial sorry”, as I call it. Americans have this aura of 1 meter (3 feet?! stupid metrics!) radius as they walk, and if you by chance enter that area, they keep saying “Sorry” or “Excuse me” until you leave their territory. Now that just might explain why they feel so comfortable invading half of the world. Why guys, don’t you get it?! We are within their own national aura! (only this one has a radius of several thousands of miles (stupid metrics!)
And not only about that, but they are territorial beasts in general. They respect other people’s and expect their own property to be respected. Kinda not surprisingly for the kingdom of capitalism and private ownership. It is only then, when you can see an American freak out.
There was one case, when we were at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and people were waiting there in a short line. We (me and my friend), Macedonians, as we are used to, went there and stood a meter away from the line, right next to a middle-aged Caucasian male. At that very moment he freaked out and started whining with a voice of a little boy crying for sweets to his dad: “Don’t cut the line! It was my turn!”
Other than cases like this, they are usually perfectly calm and got everything under control. Personally I think they have an issue with anger management. You see, Tracy, the woman I was staying at during the two weeks and that I mentioned as an unorthodox American (reasons: 56 years old, lives alone with 4 cats, divorced, hates George Bush, and is actually very smart) was the perfect example. We f*cked up her computer, and she had really important stuff there. I was always late in the mornings for the university. Now, what a normal Macedonian would do, is to shout and curse until all comes out. And all the time she “complained”, actually commented with the calmest voice possible “I’m upset about the computer.”, “You are late again.”. No sh!t?! I know I’m late. How is that supposed to tell me that you’re really pissed off about it, since all you do is hypnotizing me with those calm, slow, karmic sentences? And one day when John reluctantly concluded that the hard-drive will have to be formatted and she received a phone call from her friend whose car had just exploded literally, and Tracy had to pick up the students that were with her, she totally mentally collapsed. As she was standing behind the sofa (I was watching a movie) I heard a desperate cry “snow! snow! snow!” and then she collapsed on the floor, which felt like earthquake. At that minute I thought she was having a heart attack. But as soon as you say “Bird” she was up on her feet, excusing herself for the “excess” and saying “I don’t know what’s gotten into me.” Damn it woman, holding it inside. That’s what’s gotten into you. I’ve got more of these examples, but I’ll spare you.

Yes, I checked out the porn sites you wanted me to.

Are Americans selfish? I wouldn’t say so. But it’s more in their culture to be individualistic. Like for example, when we went out we had to pay each our own portion of the bills, or when they made dinner, the guests actually brought some food (like desert or salad), which is quite unbelievable for our culture.
One other thing that the salad reminded me, is all the products you can buy in a supermarket. I couldn’t believe when I saw a chopped salad in a supermarket waiting for some unfortunate customer to put it in a plastic box and take it home, just because he’s lazy to do the chopping on his own. But since the food isnt usually fresh and tasty, I can understand that they don’t actually see the difference. Also, you know what else they sell, beside the radioactive soft drinks with fluorescent colours, the horrible candies with artificial smell and taste and the million kinds of stinky crisps? This one’s good: smoked stripe of beef, about 10 inches long and 1 inch wide (stupid metrics!), neatly packed in a plastic bag! Puke! And a so called gummy candy, “artificially flavoured” (explicitly noted on the package) with strawberries, that tasted like snow. I gave 1$ for that and I threw it, after one single bite. Suffice is to say that I replaced it with some gummy candies imported from Canada.

No, I didn’t fornicate with the cats.

I don’t know about all Americans, but Tracy absolutely lives in chaos. And I thought my room needed a clean-up. Huh, how ignorant of me! If guests were coming, my mom would totally freak out in order everything to be tidy and clean. Oh no no! The cats defecated in the kitchen, spitted furballs wherever they felt like doing that, and walked on the table as we had breakfast! Now, if a Macedonian saw a cat walking among the food, that cat would be a dead cat soon. But no, Tracy would just say: “Billy, get down.” Billy naturally wouldn’t listen. So what’s the point in chasing him off the table, right?
My room was a mess and it was a whole of one month after her son went to Iraq when we arrived. Are they lazy? Damn right! Hard-working, but lazy. How is that? Well, I don’t think they have time for housework. When we went to dinner at one of her friends, we ate from plastic plates, and cut the rubber chicken with plastic knives and forks. No bread! And you can walk around the house with your food, or kneel on the ground, or wherever you feel like eating (havent tried the bathroom though )

No, I wont have sex with you.

Americans are like kids. They love when they are part of the group and do stupid things, such as: quacking with duck bill toys, singing “Coumbaya”, doing some famous dance like “Macarena” or any other cheerleading performance, etc. It would take a lot of effort to get a mature adult in Macedonia to do that, if you don’t pay them.
But on the other hand, they are passive when it comes to other things, when they are supposed to be enthusiastic, like concerts or sport games.
We went to a great reggae band, and believe it or not, I was the only one dancing, right in front of the stage. All the rest were just staring, like on a freakin opera or something, and is there a better music to dance but reggae? OK, lets say Jamaican music wont do in patriotic US. But how do you explain that on the Evanescence concert the only group that were dancing were the people from South-Eastern Europe (wasn’t there; i was told so)?
Also, Tracy told me that on the wedding of her son (about one day before we got there) there were about 100 people (too few for Balkan standards, where wedding is like all what you’ve worked for during your entire life), there was almost no dancing!
Or when we went to the baseball game, the crowd was sleeping, more correctly, eating all the time (no wonder you are so fat!). If you go on a football game (soccer) in Europe and the stadium is filled with 40,000 people as it was here (i’ve never seen a stadium so full), and even more you pay 40$ for a ticket, it’s gonna be a delirium! Not in USA. There was just one guy shouting the sh!t out of him (I mean literally) and he was saying some stupid “ball” jokes, if you know what I mean, trying the players to hear him, who were like half a mile (stupid metrics!) away from him. Eventually, he lost his voice.

No, thank you. I told you, no sex.

And one more thing, I liked much more the gangsta’s and low-class junkies that we encountered than the sophisticated white men. I don’t think its an issue of racial differences (but rather more social ones), but the common blacks were far more friendlier and open than the typical white americans. There was one really nice guy, who looked really hopeless, that was really honest and more natural than anyone else. He offered me weed too. Also, many black guys would walk on the street and all of a sudden start singing some famous hip-hop tune and gesturing with their hands, faced towards people passing by. And white people would just turn their heads away. I don’t know why. When he did that to me, I just smiled and did my best to do a rap gesture (which must have surely looked like ridiculing him), but he smiled back.
Yo, I love the American ghetto!

PS: American kids are monsters. Freakin monsters that mess up everything they touch. I just love them!

The Morale of the story: As I said, I wasn’t surprised a lot by the things I experienced. It was kinda expected. But it was one hell of a great experience, that gave me a better impression of Americans. My friend was in Egypt at the same time. The things he told me… Now I’m convinced that despite the differences that exist (between eastern Europe, or the Balkans for that matter, and the West) we are still a part of the same “Western culture” on a more global level. But USA still sucks the most.

Actually,

If bort were here, he'd tell you that there is an equal amount of good and bad to the u.s.

If PrivateHudson were asked, he'd tell you there is slightly more to be pessimistic about.

I am generally known for fervent american optimism.

Whatever the case, the united states is a concept more than a wrench. A wrench is a very real tool that can be handled and measured with a good degree of confidence. One can easily prove whether the wrench is doing its job, faulty, or excelling over other wrenches.

My point is that the country I live in is considered to be many different things to many different people and if one felt so inclined, he or she could no doubt prove that all three perspectives are true. All of them are correct and all are incorrect. It really depends on who you ask. The United States of America is a country not unlike the others in the world. When it concerns moral relativism, many americans think they are different when the truth is they are probably more alike the rest of the world. I believe the ties that bind us lie not in how much more advanced we think we are than the rest of the world, but instead how similar we all are. I am convinced that I think as much as a man from the other side of the globe thinks. Ergo we are all thinking creatures with a finite existence. I feel this is what will bring the world together. I think it is part of what defines what and who we are, be it a house, city, state, country, or continent.

Wow..just wow. Now i am  definitly the opposite of patrotic, but i felt a few times while reading this i got somewhat angry. The food - If you would have went to philadelphia, then you would have had some of the best american foods. New York isnt bad on food. And what type of idiot are you to buy salad in a big city. Where the hell are they going to grow  fresh vegetables to make a nice, fresh salad in a big city??. Also - Stating the thing that at baseball games, people are either sleeping or eating. No freaking duh, Baseball is one of the worlds most boring sports. I'd rather watch golf! If you would have went to a basketball or american football game, you would get your share of enthuisasm. And sure, some american laws are stupid, and some rights are defintly abused. I am also Anti-Bush, and i am very against the so called Iraq War. More like an iraq invasion. But still i was offended at some of the parts.

Ok, guys, I'm sorry you felt offended over some parts (which, if i may ask), but I'm not really famous about positive criticism. What I'm talking about here is my impression, and it doesnt necessarily have to be the truth. I dont think all Americans are like that. Far from it.
And it is a common thing when you make generalizations about a country to be more negatively inclined. Ask yourselves about one positive stereotype that you know of, and you'll see you'd have a hard time finding one.

oh, and btw, cant you see its my adversary I'm talking about here, not my dream destination.

Unless you want me to - no. Cos I see you are already offended by criticizing US, and I was just starting.

Or you can also post your own views of how are Americans like, or for that matter Balkan people (if any of you has had experience with us).

Well, my father's been to Macedonia(that's where you live, right Svarog?), and he said the food is good, but the service stinks.
