For your sorceress, you should focus mainly on cold. It's the best in the game. But you will find monsters imune, so pick lightning or fire, best is fire imo, the firewall does insane damage.
At cold, mak glacial spike and frozen orb, plus masteries.
If you happen to have patch 1.10, remember the sinergies.

If not cold magic, lightning is also deadly. When you choose any character dont waste your skill points at the beggining, hold on to them and use them on something better later in the game.

I have something like level 54 asassin. She combines magic and fighting almost perfectly. Lightening traps are awesome. With a shadow you actually have two characters. I have tried the cow level being at 40+. It was too easy... Playing for the Bowazon probably is more challenging. But in general, add-on characters seem to be more powerful.

As said, a Cold and Fire Sorc is good.
I also had fun with the Paladin. Basically, get Zeal to level 5 at least (you can increase it if you want), and try to get a mana steal scepter. Life steal wouldn't hurt either. Be sure to have one skill point in each of the elemental resists auras and alternate accordingly.
Once you hit level 30, it's all about Salvation and Fanatacism.

If you want a Sorceress that does HUGE damage, you should get the 1.10 Patch. It will give spells and skills bonuses from each other. Focus on Fireball and the spells it gets bonuses from, like Fire Bolt, and it gains enormous powers.
If someone is immune, pick Blizzard, because you can get big damage for it, too. Blizzard gains bonuses from many spells, most likely 3 or 4, and therefore, it can inflict massive damage when cast. Frozen orb gains damage only from Ice Bolt, so Blizzard will be better later on.
Also, skill points should be put in Energy Shield and Teleport, and a couple of them in Static Field. Itīs great against big monsters. Teleport shouldnīt be forgotten either. Itīs a great spell, and you can flee from many ambushes with it. IMO, Lightning Magic is the worst of them. No skill points should be wasted in attack spells from that school, unless you really, really need them at the time. (cold & Fire immune enemy.)
I hope this helps some people. I have a Sorceress of level 86, Shadow, and she has been trained somewhat like this.

Sorceress Rules!
I have a Sorceress, "Lumentia", about level 42 already beat up Baal really easily. I actually kept the Rogue from the first act all the way through.
Anyway I focused on Cold with Fire and Lightning about even although since I have the Leaf Runeword staff, Tir+Ral, all my fire spells have +3 automatically so there more powerfull than most of my lightning. I found that in Act 2 you really should get Lightning and Chain Lightning and especially Chainlightnin is useful later. For the Cold spells I find Frozen Orb more worth it than Blizzard for a couple reasons. Don't get me wrong they both kick but though you can send an Orb into a big room through a door and have it hit almost everyone where as Blizzard is only good if there trying to come through the door after you.
In Act5 Frozen Orb rules. Just make sure you have some mana potions handy.

n00b If you focus in all those skills, they will come equally quite useless in Hell level! And do you think you can beat other people with rather poor dama? If you have patch 1.10, Blizzard is WAY better than the Orbie. And if you have a faster cast rate, you can cast many Blizzards at the same time. And Fire Ball will be one of the most powerful fire spells.

Max out frozen orb and firewall. It does insane damage when you combo these two attacks. Also, have about 8 points in warmth and 1 in teleport..

I never said I focused on the others just put like 1 sp in them so that they are available. The Leaf staff gives any fire spell I have +3 and I think it's FireBolt +3 more so there are 2 of my fire skills that have 7-8 points when I have only actually used 1 skill point in it.

+7 skills is quite good, but not good enough. I have 37 skill points in Blizzard and it does about 4000 points of Damage and Fire Ball 8500. They gain bonuses from others, which have about 25 skill points as well.
If you put skill points on some spells just for fun, it will be fatal for you in the end. I beat Baal easily on level 35. I trained my Sorceress more in Hell.
Frozen Orb might feel awesomely good at the time, but Blizzard will be much stronger.

Hah.. u can only put 20 skills after that u can modify it till level 30... no effect afterwards.... but lvl 37 isnt very probable to reach by anyone unless cheated
