question about random maps

a noob question:

is there any patch that fixes random map balance? My friends and I have been playing HoMM 3 and it seems like every game someone gets a dramatically advantageous starting position, and sometimes people get positions that are so poor that they are unplayable. I seem to recall one time where a guy was literally trapped in his city from the start by a pack of wyverns. He couldn't even move his hero. Any advice?

EDIT: just finished a game where my area featured a school of war, a learning stone, a merc camp, and 2 windmills, while my opponent had 3 learning stone, 3 windmill, 3 garden, 2 marletto tower, 2 tower of magic, and a star axis. To add insult to injury, the map was divided into 4 sections with an area in the middle that had pretty much all the mines, a keymaster tent, and some other stuff. The section adjacent to his actually had a town in it, but the section adjacent to mine did not ... so I had no expansion. And the gate that the keymaster's tent unlocks was in the middle of his territory. Out of all the games I have played I've probably won about half, but I don't think any of the games were decided by skill - just map distribution.

I played around 5 maps with my friend recently, and all the maps we played were pretty ok.

On a random map, you have to expect the worst aka your opponent is doing better than you, but i haven't caught a lot of instances where the random game i was playing was decided only by luck.

The whole point of a random map is to play different maps every time, not the same damn map over and over again, so i don't see how making your own maps would help.

Default random maps suck. Download playermade templates (files to put in data folder as rmg.txt)

TOH random map templates

Download one of them and save it in [homm3directory]/data as rmg.txt.

Your random maps should be different.

and if you like them to be really random use Midnight Mix as your template since that is a collection of over 40 templates stuck together.

For a thread that explains it all, look here...

the lava, grass and dirt have no terrain penalty.

Some of the templates are on non native terrain to make it harder to find your opponent, given that if your opponent castle the you will scout the grass terrain first. The other reason for it is to reduce the penalty to tower, stronghold and fortress.
