The Height of the Guild - RP

Alexander Frostway pulled out several scrolls from what used to be the desk of his old Master. Now it belonged to no one. Even though Alexander only knew his Master, known by the name of Sir Alexander, for a short period of time, he considered him a second father, and the relationship between them was close. Sir Alexander even called his surrogate son, Junior as a joke, being that they both went by the name of Alexander. The name amongst his peers stuck, however they spruced it up a bit calling him Sir Junior. When Junior heard the news of his Master’s death, he was devastated…

He sat eating his breakfast of warm grits, when one of the elder nuns of the Order, Madison, walked into the room, dabbing her sobbing face with a handkerchief. He almost knew what had happened the minute he saw her walk into the room. However the news of his murder, his assassination, was more disturbing then his death, that his father figure died of not the righteous path of which every paladin dreamed, but of a death without valor. There was nothing beautiful being assassinated, but to die in one’s last efforts for the cause that he believes with every ounce of his soul and being, is beautiful. Junior took the news as strong and impassive as any paladin can be. He never lost his composure, letting only a few tears fall down his cheeks. He kept his head up and bottled up his grief and remorse.

He had not mentioned Sir Alexander since the funeral, which was months ago. This was the first time, he had done anything to even recognize that Sir Alexander had existed, and even now he gave the excuse to himself that he was on business, looking for possible clues on his assassin. He fished through letters of business and leisure, finding nothing until, amongst the piles of correspondence, he came across his Master’s journal. He flipped through to the end of the entries and read the last one, the logical place to look for any clues.

Quote:

Today something peculiar happened. It was the third day that I had seen that same rogue, the tall, lanky one, with the dark complexion and clean shaved face. He seemed to have been appearing everywhere we went. By the looks of him he appeared to be a member of one of the local Thieves’ Guilds. From his black armor and cape, he's most likely part of the Gloom Catchers. If only we knew where their base of operations was…

Enough sweating over those infernal Gloom Catchers. My day was a good one nonetheless…

The remaining of the entry was personal information and Junior slammed the book shut. This was good news, it seemed the Gloom Catchers were behind his murder, but what would possibly warrant assassinating him or give them any desire to do so? A question that Junior could not answer, however a more important question was answered, and with this answer he left to inform his colleagues of his new found answer, almost cracking a smirk. Junior was in best of spirits.

In the Thieves Guild

Sitting at his desk, in his dark office, position at the rear of the Thieves guild, Max surveyed the supply and demand files. This was not good. he squinted to see the figures inscribed on the paper through the dim candlelight. The recent demand for stolen emeralds had diminished greatly, and that was their most recent take. Max had sent his greatest thieves out to collect emeralds, as they were the biggest order on the list at the time.
"This is not good." He muttered.
Jewellery seemed to have lost value too much. Something more was in order. He would have to reach higher. Thief training would be tightened. Recruiting would be focused apon. For the first time, the leader of the thieves guild realized that the potential of his guild was far beyond that of jewellery taking. That was for the likes of catburgulars. He must strive for something bigger, better and larger than life. It was this thought that lead to the Idea...

Suddenly the door opened, and the silhouette of an all to familiar figure appeared through the gap.

"Knight, they have come."The man said, and left. It is time...

Sounds came from the courtyard, swords clashing against each other. Ang-Ho was down there, as usual, training with the new recruits. They stood there on a line, waiting for the first fight with Ang-Ho. None of them was calm. All stood anxious, changed positions, sweated and froze. Before them, Gunnar, the strongest of them, fell on his back, his wooden sword laying four feet away from him. See? I told you not to charge at me like that! Ang-Ho told Gunnar. You should focus more on your defensive tactics, if you really want to fight with the sword. I think that you would me better suited with a warhammer, because those great arm muscels you have would be great to swing a heavy hammer, not a small sword. So, who's next? The Recruits stood there, no one saying nothing...

Calhoun trained in a small, empty room overlooking the courtyard, by himself. He began his practice as normal, raising his sword up to the sky. Was it in prayer or preparation? Maybe both? Even he did not know. Nor did he want to. Ever since that day he slew that man, that demon of a man, whenever he tried to concentrate, one thought led to another and another until he was swimming breathlessly through a torrent of mystery brought up by his uneasy mind. So for now he spent each day as simply as he could, trying to calm the storm inside him.

Despite his efforts to silence the pain, however, some thoughts still surfaced. First was worry, and foreboding, the plague of the mind. Although it had shown no signs of it, he wondered if his illness could spread amongst the others. Would it wait for the opportune moment, then strike at a new victim? Or would it simply wrestle for domination until either he chased it out or it killed him? Next was doubt. Something a paladin should never feel. Yet was he a paladin any more? He doubted in the abilities of comrades now, in his own abilities, in everyone. He was slowly losing faith, and though he remained within the Order, he felt himself slipping away from its delicate harmony. And finally was guilt. At first, he had seemed perfect to be the new leader; he was skilled in battle as well as talented with magic. The one thing that held many in doubt was a prophet's word, a bad premonition. It was said that something terrible would happen were he to lead the Order. To the Order or to him, no one knew; he assumed that the premonition involved he curse, and that he would bring suffering, directly or not, to the Order as a leader. That was before they knew the nature of the curse, when they knew only that he had been touched by darkness. So Sir Alexander, his close equal, took the role in his stead. As it was, the terrible thing that was to happen was to the new leader of the Order, a cold death by an assassin's hand. Calhoun still blamed himself to some degree for Sir Alexander's death, though he had been in a coma he had sunk into from the illness at the time of the incident. And there was no way he could take up the role, now... The sickness had taken quite a bit of what would have made him a good leader. Most believed he had nothing left but his magic. That was not entirely untrue.

He swung the blade, smoothly, slicing the air, and brought it back up in a half-moon motion to swing again. At that moment, his hand quivered as he suddenly faltered. The weapon clattered to the floor. Rather than become frustrated over this, however, he made to take the sword from the ground and ready himself for another attempt. Footsteps sounding in the hallway changed his mind. He saw, somewhat unexpectedly, as he picked up the sword, Alexander Frostway in the doorway.

"Good day to you, Alex," he said. Normally, he would have called him Junior, and he had in fact been the first to use the nickname other than Sir Alexander, but in his unrest he had left old times behind for the moment. "What brings you here in such high spirits?" he asked, for Junior certainly looked pleased about something.

OOC: I wanted to make up a little conversation here, I won't have you say much.

Junior stood there smiling; a seldom sight it was.

Junior: "Last night, I spoke with Her."

This was certainly very surprising to Calhoun as he knew more than any other the effect of Sir Alexander's death on Junior, he hadn't spoken to Her in over a month, something that paladins only do when they are not ready to receive their next quest.

Junior's last quest was a complete failure, he was to seek out the murderer of a man, widower and father to four children. Junior did find his perpetraitor with all haste, but did not give the man a public trial, he instead performed an immediate execution out of rage. His personal issues were getting in the way of his line of duty, and decided to take a rest for a month or two.

Calhoun: "What did She say?"

Junior: "I am to find the murderer of Sir Alexander. I just spent the entire morning going through his letters when I came upon his journal and found an entry of a particular rogue that seemed to keep appearing, in fact three days in a row. By his outfit, all black armor and cape--"

Calhoun: "The Gloom Catchers?"

Junior: "Yes. Just as we had all feared it would be. However I don't feel that I am worthy and capable of such a task... on my own. This I conveyed to Her and my answer was to choose two paladins of the Sacred Sword, who must be willing, to aid me in my quest. The others may be losing their faith in your status, but I still believe in you. I don't care what the others think."

Calhoun looked at the sword he'd picked up. It glinted in the sunlight that penetrated the room, reflecting the tapestries over his shoulder. Alex still believed in him, even now.
"Thanks, Junior..."
It seemed funny, calling him 'Junior'. Unlike what many thought, Calhoun wasn't actually all that much older than Alex. The illness' persistence had changed a lot of views on him, and since no one really kept track of his age, they developed the misconception that the reason he was frail and weak was that he was old. That wasn't the case whatsoever.

"I'll help you," he then said, after a bit of silence. "Tell me when you're ready to leave. I will be here. Unless you want me to come with you....?" He knew that Alex hadn't chosen his other companion yet, because he would have first of all said so, and second of all have probably brought the man with him, so as to be ready when he found another willing to go with him. With the first clue in hand, he would be eager to depart and begin investigating as soon as possible.

OOC: AMtwis. I included one thing about you telling old war stories. If you have a problem with this I will delete it.

Junior: "Do not worry Calhoun. Faith will be revitalized among the others as well. I will return once I have... You will see once I am done."

Junior turned and left Calhoun alone once more. He entered the dining hall and approached Ang-Ho who was telling of his old war stories to the fresh recruits. The youngsters all looked onward bugeyed leaning over their plates. Their plates were full and getting cold.

Junior: "Excuse me Ang-Ho, I need to speak it's important."

Ang-Ho: "I will continue with the story in a minute."

The half-orc turns around to speak with Junior.

Ang-Ho: "What is so urgent?"

Junior: "I need your skills as a smithy, I need to craft a sword, I will place the enchantments and I need you to shape it physically."

Ang-Ho: "Isn't this rather ordinary business?"

Junior: "No. I need to forge a sword as light as a dagger."

Ang-Ho: "You must be kidding. Not even Sir Alexander had enchantments that powerful."

Junior: "The sword will be forged and it will be as strong as any. I need your tempering skills, not to be told what I can and cannot do. Will you help me?"

The Thieves gather ...

As the meeting was called, the motley crew of bandits, cut-throats, assassins, thieves and burgulars filed in the doors. Not to neatly, but despite thier violent upbringing, the thieves are honest to each other. For the most part. As they were walking in, Knight stood up at the head of the table. He was cloaked, adding to the mystery that surrounded his figure. Near silence arose in the dingy room, as a lot of respect was reserved for a figure such as Max of the Thieves. He cleared his throat and began:

"I understood that we have a number of new recruits. Which is always good, seeing as they have passed the tests of Skill and Faith. Now unlike other meetings, we will have to introduce these new souls and begin by me reading the- Oh sit down and shut up you two will you!- ok, now as i started, i'll be the one to read the Rules of Repossession, starting here. Why dont you all just find yerselves a seat, and we'll get started."
He spoke in a gruff low voice. Everyone was not seated, and the tension in the room was high. Everyone seemed to know that there was something other than the rumored value drop of the repossessed emeralds. Patience, however proves a keen virtue among thieves, so they waited.

Quote:

Under His Guidance, we swear as thieves to obey the order of conduct under the banner of the thieves guild, and the Rules of Reposessions. These rules include but are not limited to:
1)A thief may never get caught physically harming another member, or taking thier personal belongings, otherwise to risk expulsion and/or execution.
2)A thief must not make a decision for the Guild without full consensus of the other members, for risk of expulsion and/or execution.
3)Betrayal is punishable by death.
4)A thief must never cause the Guild to lose money purposefully for ones own interests, for risk of expulsion and/or execution.
5)Money made on a job goes to the Guild Treasury, not to your purse, for risk of expulsion.
6)Blackmail, threats and bribes among the Guild are not tollerated in any fashion, for risk of expulsion and/or execution.

These rules must be followed at all times. To make a new rule, all thieves must agree to the terms and a secret vote must be passed.

Most of the thieves did not understand the majority of the words in that, but "execution" "punishment" and "death" were words that made it all clear for them. The main purpose of the Rules were to prevent tyranny. A few grumbles confirmed that all were in agreement.
"So.. any questions?

*As I ran out of the forest and looked ahead of me across a large open field I could hear dogs barking off in the distance. I ran for nearly two miles before stopping to take a drink from a canteen of water I had on me and leaned up against an old abondened barn. Gasping for breath I looked out over the fields and noticed in the east what appeared to be a large city. It's walls rose clear and stood proudly over the terrain and the place looked rather homely from my position. I looked back from where I came and took out a spyglass to see farther then my naked eye. As I knew, I could see the shapes of three men walking in my direction in the distance. Having been hunting me for the past three years I knew they would not rest until they had me. Sighing I picked up my bundle of valuables and continued running a straight path towards the city. After about another mile I came to the huge, majestic gates. There were heavily armed gaurds who gave me a dark scowl but let me in none the less. Not after they let me know that there was to be no nonsense about while I was here. I gave a silent chuckle as all who I've come across would say the near exact same thing. Perhaps it was my dark demeanor or the way I was so silent and kept to myself all of the time? I may never really find out but I was soon lost in the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. I forced my way to the nearest Inn, picking pockets of gold coins along the way and smiling out of the corners of my lips along the way while keeping my head down as the gaurds looked at me on moments and kept about their duties. As I got into the Inn I asked him for a room and payed with my newly borrowed money from over a half dozen unsuspecting citizens. Choosing the highest room I settled in and locked the door for a well deserved rest*

Sitting down and sighing, Calhoun looked at the tapestries on the walls. One represented a baby bird, flying out of the nest where its brothers and sisters still sat cheeping. Its parents circled the nest proudly, happy that it had attempted something new and received such a great gift as flight. One of the other babies in the nest was standing on the side, ready to jump. It was somewhat odd to see such a tapestry, without praise to any manner of god. All of the tapestries in this particular room were taken down from a temple that had been demolished to make way for the royal castle. They weren't religious, so the Order didn't have much interest in them, but they were philosophical enough that Calhoun eventually accepted them after a good deal of badgering from the Royal Order; they were concerned with the "preservation of history". That had been when they were on good terms. Now upon finding such things they would probably just burn them.

Another tapestry depicted a tomcat on a sunny spring day, by the look of it, chasing mice in the wilderness. It was about to go into a cave that was dark and had the silhouettes of wolves woven into it, and a mouse dead in one of their mouths. A somewhat sinister story, but it told of those who had made it. It would have been impossible to tell who
had made it. It could have been a small religious group who was here to support a village, or it could have been some necromancers doing ditrywork. Unlikely, considering the tapestries, but possible. It was even possible that some druids had made their home there, though what druids would want with stone walls and detailed tapestries one would never know. However, the philosphies of life embodied were embodied in animals, so it was just as likely as the next possibility.

But what if it had been necromancers? What was to be gained by keeping the tapestries? It was possible that some unholy men would make tapestries as such, hoping that someone else would pick them up one day and they could use them against that someone. Narrowly, but distinctly possible. It seemed that everything, no matter how nice, could be turned into something horrible. Like him - he had once been a paladin, and now... since that day... since that day-

"What should we do with him?"
"Killing him is a waste... but we can't keep him with us."
"The only other option is to send him back to the Order."
"Ahh, a good idea!"
"What?"
"We'll send him back... and a little something else with him..."

Calhoun stood up suddenly, snatching the sword and swinging it so hard that it chipped the stone floor. He breathed only slightly harder than before, but noticeably. Waiting till he had calmed himself, he went to sit down again, clenching the sword tightly, and eventually loosening his grip and dropping the sword out of weakness... And he thought for a moment. Of COURSE necromancers couldn't have made the tapestries for evil. They would know right away. No amount of enchantments worthwhile to the undead would prevent them from knowing just by seeing them that they were anything other than just plain tapestries. No, he was worrying about nothing.

Junior did not depart with any salutations. He simply left to the stables and mounted his steed. There was not much time to be wasted, he only hoped he would find what he needed at The Merchants Guild. The item he so desired was quite rare and if there was any place to find it within a hundred miles it would be here. He sped down the streets of Severyn Heights, weaving through the crowds of people.

The journey old took, but a few minutes and the incessant rushing was actually rather unecessary as it would have taken only a few more at a more reasonable, leisurely pace. His destination was a run down building at the edge of town. The place needed some fixing up, but those penny-pinchers didn't care. They wouldn't fix the building if it was falling down around them.

Junior tied his steed and walked inside. An old, bitter halfling greeted him at the door.

Halfing: "What brings you to the Merchant's Guild?"

Junior: "I am looking for a Moxiel Gem."

Halfing: "Hmmm... No wonder you came here. Such an item is hard to find, especially one for sale. I do not have a Moxiel Gem, let me consult with my associates. Take a seat and I will see if any of us have your Moxiel Gem."

Alex sat and waited seemingly forever. The halfling never returned. Instead the leader of the Guild, a fairly youthful man by the name of William Swindler, came to confront the Paladin.

William: "I hear that you are looking for a Moxiel Gem."

Junior simply stared at the man and waiting for him to continue.

William: "... I am sorry to say that we do not have one. One of my merchants could probably find one within a couple months at the most."

Alex: "That isn't going to work. I need it now. If you cannot help me I will go somewhere else."

William: "... You think anywhere else around here has a Moxiel Gem?"

Alex: "Not for a hundred miles."

William: "Alright I see then. The best place I would say to find this is at the border town, Gaeroule. You must descend the mountains and then follow the Severyn River all the way to Syvall. But that is a week's journey."

Alex knew the man was exaggerating the travel times. He knew that he could get there in two or three days at a grueling pace.

William: "That is not the only place you can find one? If you do not find luck there, there is a caravan whose last stop resides in Saereas, another weeks travel into the heart of Syvall. Their wares will be picked over but you are certain to find at least one Moxiel Gem as they receive regular shipments from the Raurian Mines. Along the way, you should stop and ask my caravans."

Junior: "Thank you for the directions. I am most appreciative."

William: "Ah. Wonderful."

William held out his hand expecting a generous tip, however Junior took his hand and gave him a firm handshake.

Junior: "I will certainly come here again if I am in need of any wares."

Junior headed outside and untied his steed.

Junior: "Hey there Beauty."

Junior stroked Beauty on her face and she responded with gentle snort and touched her face to Junior's chest.

Junior: "We are going on a journey tomorrow."

Beauty snorted again and turned to let Junior mount her. The two rode off back through town back to the Sacred Sword. He would need someone to come with him. He knew of no one who would join him other than Calhoun, but he was still too weak to travel into the unknown. If worst came to worst he would hire a merc to assist him in case the worst were to happen.

Sir Moridith Blackfist sat across the table looking at the men two women in front of him. They were all sensible men that he had gathered to his cause long ago, and between them they held most of the influence in the Order.

He had summoned them to discuss certain matters. Of past errors in judgement and the way forward for the Order, as he saw it.
He had been a member of the Order many years, and came from a well respected family. He had been in the running for the leadership when Sir Galhad had been appointed head of the Order and had thought he was a sure thing when the old fool was finally killed off by the necromancers. But unknown to Sir Moridith was that Sir Alexander had already been more or less anointed by his predecessor, and the men in this room were still bound enough by custom to ratify the choice.

Disturbingly he had heard rumblings among the younger members of the Order that Sir Alexander 'Senior's natural successor should be Sir Alexander Junior.
But he had just found out that 'Junior' was out of the keep on some errand or other so he thought that now was a rip time to nip that annoyance in the bud.

'Sirs' he said, standing up. 'And Sisters Madison and Vashka. You all know why I've gathered you here today. Two Holy Commanders killed in the space of a few short months and our Order is floundering. The necromancers openly moving for the first time in years and a new brand of thief appearing everywhere you look.
And people are looking at us, not the King to help them in their plight,
The King himself has begun to resent what he sees as our 'meddling' in state affairs.
The new Holy Commander needs to be a man of action, who sees the broad picture, as it is these days. I hope that we can discuss this in a fair manner so that our Holy Order can once again have the direction it needs for the difficult days to come'.

He sat down and began to speak further, hoping that the groundwork he'd done with most of those present wasn't wasted........

The chanting continued, but Lokali knew that this anti-divination would fail, just as all the others had. Each of the elders, it seemed, wanted to have their shot at "freeing" the boy from the holy magic which set him so far apart from those with whom he belonged. He sank deeper and deeper into a hopeless stupor as each purging failed. And they all had. The high elder now had his chance to show his power, but it was useless. Magic could not be erased.

Lokali had tried all he could do to forget the enchantments that he didn't even know how to control, but it was as if the magic were an extension of him. How it remained with him after his death and resurrection that followed a non-existent life, no one could figure. The young lich simply assumed that he had the skills for a reason, and eventually stopped fighting his "plight", trying only to learn the skills that allowed him to fit in. Perhaps it wasn't a plight at all, but a blessing, but there was no convincing anyone here of that fact.

The trials he had endured had aged the boy well beyond his years, a fact that mattered not, as all undead lived as long as war would allow them. The elder had seen millennia come and go, but he was a mere shell of his former self. All who lived to see so much ended up faded and worn. Lokali had experienced more hardship than any of his unaging child peers, and many of them had abandoned the boy. The only thing that kept Lokali tethered to his sanity was his one last friend, Seito. But all good things had come to an end for the young lich, and this was no exception.

After the toiling ceremony, Lokali ran to his friend's house, but Seito's mother, a leftover relation from life, simply waved him away, hinting that Lokali's friend was at his house already. As the young lich turned in that direction, he saw a look a somber sadness on her face, a look that seemed to say "this has to be done". As his eye met hers, she turned quickly away and retreated through the doorway, slamming the door quickly behind.

Anxious as to what his friend was doing at his house, the young boy ran as fast as he could to reach him, not paying attention to those in his way that he bumped. He finally arrived, flinging open the door and making his way back to his room. Seito was there, packing.

"We going somewhere, bud?"

"No," his friend hesitantly replied, "but you are."

Lokali was confused. Why was his friend sending him away somewhere? He asked the same question aloud.

"This is not where you belong, Lokali."

He looked up, now finished with his duties, and stared blankly at his friend.

"You are too great a burden to bear, and now you have to leave. "

Lokali stepped forward, angry that his last hope had betrayed him. As he formed a ball of holy magic in his hand, the young lich almost shouted in grief at his friend that now held his belongings, "I thought you were my friend?!"

"Don't threaten me!" came the reply. Seito rushed up to his friend and grabbed his neck.

"Now you listen here, I don't have the patience to deal with you, so get out!" He seemed almost ready to break down in tears, as if he regretted every word, but the boy stood his ground as Lokali's face softened.

"Okay, I'll go," he said, and Seito's grip loosened. The young lich gathered his belongings from the ground and slowly left the room, eventually making his way out of the village under the watchful eyes of those who he passed along the way. He was soon on his own, completely.

"Good job, Seito. Now our glorious order is restored."

"...He was my friend. You could have chosen someone else. Now he probably hates me."

"Forget about him, son. There are plenty of others who you can be friends with, people who belong here. You will never see Lokali again."

He sent away the young one, Seito....He probably shouldn't say young one, but everyone is bound by the forms they followed when they were vital. Seito was probably at least fifty years old.
But he wasn't the important one.
Lokali was.
He watched the young Lich with the strange abilities trude down the dirt road. There would be hardship ahead for this one, but it was part of his Msterplan. The only plan that really mattered in the webs he spun as a matter of course these days
He was rarely, in fact never given over to fits of comapssion, but perhaps seeing one that reminded him so much of himself that brought on this feeling, alien to him after so many years. Lokali would be a useful tool, that would maybe become more than a tool, but he would be used up if needs be.
Those blighted Paladins needed to be eradicated, and the thieves weren't proving as useful as he had hoped when he planted the idea of a creed into the new leaders head. Quite intelligent, and bloodthirsty; but totally open to manipulation.

Enough reminiscing, he had his own imprtant work to be about.
Gripping his cloak that was seemingly woven of pure darkness he found the edge of shadow that he needed to Travel....and was gone.........

New blood for their ranks...

"Mi'lord. I bear news, news that it would benefit us all to hear, i be thinking." Whistlebone stood up and announced. Whistlebone was treated with great respect around the guild, as it was he who began their wicked leader practicing the arts of thievery.
Knight remained standing. He examined the look on Whistle's face, he seemed eager to spread the news, but was trying to hide the expression.

"Yes, Whistlebone? We're all ears."
"I have heard news of a new skilled one. I have heard from many that he is very, very talented. Some even say he's the ultimate outlaw, jack-of-all-things-evil I heard from one man who was unfortunate enough to encounter him while escorting a band of traders through the forest. Very high reputation, just what we need. Unfortunately, not good enough at avoiding authority, it seems as he is on the run from a band of bounty hunters of some sort. I believe that if we are to find this man, and convince him to help our cause, he would be a great addition, not to mention the sanctuary we could provide from the law. Last I heard he was heading for the City, probably seeking shelter. That is all."At this a few grunts of agreement arose, and discussion started prematurely. Knight cleared his throat and the noise level sank dramatically.
"Well done, Whistle. Men, this is what we need. We need fresh blood among us. I say we prepare immediately. Whistle, keep up the good work. I will accompany a skirmish into the City. I wish to meet this bloke myself. Gather your things. We leave at sundown tomorrow."As hurried and extemely decisive as it may seem, the thieves were used to their master, and undertood his urgency. There was no more discussion. They all left, only the few asassins of high rank were left behind with Whistlebone and Knight. A long night was ahead of them.

*while hiding in the ally I fell asleep while thinking to myself next to some old shipping crates. Sleeping so that my face would be hiddin from view I took a quick cat nap. After all my running sleep was a rare and very much needed delicacy. When I suddenly felt a hand grasp my shoulder I did the only thing that I've trained myself to do. Plunging my concealed dagger through the form of my unknown shoulder grabber brought a shocked expression to the strangers face. My eyes wide from the shock and realization that if this man was from one of the three that I feared they wouldn't have bothered tapping my shoulder but would have just run me through. From the man's dying choke I guessed that he was just making sure I was alive and not some dead man laying there. A little to late for apologies I brought my dagger out of his heart and let the blood flow freely. Feeling more ashamed then ever I took the only blanket I had to sleep on and covered his limp body with it. Noticing light coming from a nearby door where the man must have come out of, I looked into the doorway to notice a bag of garbage by the entrance. Tossing it outside I entered and closed the door. As the latch clicked a woman's voice came out from another room*

Woman: Herb! What's taking so long cooking that gruel?

*speechless and wondering what to do now I step into the next room to see a rather petite woman give a little shocked gasp*

Woman: Who..? Where's my Herb?! What's happened to him?

Gorman: He's had an accident miss. Please remain calm so I can tell you what happened to him.

Woman: No! I won't hear any lies from you!

Gorman: Please miss, I don't want any trouble...

Woman: Gaurds! GAURDS! There's an intrud....

*before she got the rest of her sentence out I had buried a knife into her throat. Clawing at the blade buried in her throat she slunked to the floor and died silently. I heard a guard pound on the door and ask if everything was ok*

Gorman: Yes, everything's fine! Sorry to bother you officer's.

*As I walked around the house I noticed it was well provisioned with quite a bit of food as well as drink. Having only a kitchen and two bedrooms it wasn't much, but surely I could put some use to it. After a bit of work I made sure all the window's and door's could be locked so as not to be disturbed. I then set about and removed the body of the woman and set her by her husband in the ally. Going back inside I noticed that this man must have been a merchant dealer. A large amount of coins was stashed in a wooden safe. About 3,000 total. Taking a small portion, I went to a nearby Arms dealer and selected a well made short sword and some light mail armor. Selling my soaked cloak I buy a new one that's black as night. I also bought more throwing knives as well and stuck my trusty dagger in a hidden compartment in my boot before residing back at my new found home*

Corruption among the corrupt...

"I have heard of this man, Knight. He sounds... capable. Take me with you on this... expedition, parsay." Cedric said, placing his sword down on the newly vacated table. He kept glancing at the door and nearest window.
"Cedric, you seem prepared enough. Whistlebone, how shall we locate this man?" Knight said, dismissing Cedric's comment.
Cedric interrupted again.

"I believe we should ask the town guards what they have heard. This man seems to leave ruckus wherever he goes. The guards keep track of all migration between these major cities, we find a man who fits this description and ask for him. I have... business to attend to in town. I must go."
"A hit?" Whistlebone asked.
"Uh, a hit? Um yes. Yes of course. But yes so have we agree-"

At that moment there was a crash in the open window near Knight. In a flash he drew a switchknife and grabbed at whomever was behind him.
"Meww" Knight pulled the knife out of the feral cat's throat.
"Not AGAIN, Knight? *sigh* Leave the animals alone..." Cedric laughed, and left them to deal with the bloody mess.

As they were occupied with the stray animal, they didnt notice Cedric leave by a different door to the main exit. He was heading for the treasury...

*At the order house, Ang-Ho was sitting at a fire, telling a story to the apprentices*

-..and when they attacked, we all stood with straight backs and faced them. In the barbarian world, a soldier that flees from battle is a coward. He will not gain respect, he will lose it. Even if the best choice is to run, barbarians usually fight 'til the death of their enemies. Anyway, we stood there, myself and some others, wneh those bandids attacked our wagon. I quickly picked up my axe from the saddle and jumped ddown on the ground. The others were guarding the wagon, it was me and Liin that met the attack. I swung my axe agains the bandids, forcing them to retreat a bit. At the same time, one of the bandidts attack Liin from behind. She quickly turned around while drawing her combat knife. I don't think the bandid ever knew what hit him. He just stormed, and then suddently, he was dead.  The apprentices all watched Ang-Ho carefully, hanging on to every word that came out of his mouth

-I think this is enough storytelling for tonight. If you come here tomorrow at the same time, maybe I'll continue.  There was a sigh from the youngsters as they rose and slowly walked away, talking to each other about rushing attacks and quick war turns.
