More important matters need attention...

Knight saw the suspicion in their eyes. The younger looking paladin had her hazel eyes searching their surroundings. Maybe they expected an ambush; they must be really paranoid. An idea came to Knight, which fitted perfectly with what he needed to do anyway.

"Do you think you're too good for us? Is THAT it? Huh?! I reckon' youze couldn't take down a bandit if your life depended on it. Behind that thick armour and glistening swords, youze are nothing."Knight said, trying to be suddenly as obnoxious as possible.

Both gorman and the paladins looked very puzzled at this dramatic mood swing.

"What are you doing... buddy...? Keep yer cool, we trying to get them to like us not hate us.."gorman nudged Knight in the ribs and whispered this to him. Perfect.

Knight suddenly became furious, as if gorman had assaulted him.

"WHAT WAS THAT FOR?! I'll kill you!!"Knight drew his dagger by the blade and thrusted the blunt end at gorman.
Luckily he noticed the wink in Knights eyes and took the hint. Gorman side-strafed and punched Knight in the side of the head, only softly making it look brutal.
Knight smiled and collapsed to the ground. This plan was going very smoothly.

"Dearest god! That was amazing! How did you move so fast away from him?"The talled paladin exclaimed, amazed at their show. He had fallen for it. Knight still played unconsious.

"Yes... well I am pretty skilled"gorman dusted invisible lint off of his sleeve in a nonchalant manner.
"Will you take me? I took care of this fool pretty well!"gorman pleaded. Knight had mentioned his lack of interest and time that was required for him to partake on this quest. gorman already knew that he was in on this on his own.

"Although you have proven yourself, I still have my doubts. I don't know you..."The paladin said looking uneasy.

"Well lets talk about it. Walk with me, and then decide. Leave this reacreant man to rot, shall we?"
As soon as they were out of sight, Knight got up and headed in the direction of the Guild.

Ang-Ho walked down the hallway muttering about this new thought when he saw Rune coming towards him
I beg your pardon sir, could you spare a minute?
Ofcourse, you just  start talking and I'll listen.
Well, today I was excluded from the training! You have trained me all my time here! You should know! I want to become a paladin! I can't take it easy on the training!
Rune's cry for work was a small surprise to Ang-Ho. This apprentice was one of the best magic users of all time, but only slightly better than average with the blade. Ang-Ho took a glimpse at the list he was handed earlier. Rune's name was there. He sighed
Well, you don't need to worry about training now. follow me, we need to find some people. Ang-Ho said while starting to move to the appretice's barracks

The Hunt Resumes...

*Up on a rooftop of a neaby tavern, Abrecan was watching the Knights with his prey. As they headed towards the gate he smiled evilly to himself and jumped down from the roof. Entering the back door of the tavern he walks towards his two accomplaces in a dark corner on the far side of the room*

Alaron: What's the word of the elf?

Abrecan: He's heading out the city with the knights. Do you two have any ideas on how we'll get him away from those tin headed fools?

Becan: Indeed we have. Alaron and I shall chase him away from the two Knights, and as we give chase, you tell the Knights something terribly dramatic about him. Such as he's a murderor with a good bounty on his head and we've been hunting him for quite some time now.

Abrecan: Sounds good. Let's go before they get too far...

*the three quietly left the tavern and mounted their horses and started heading towards the gates to the city. Slowly at first, than with a growing trot, eager to get at the damned one so they can return to their unnatural lives*

Meanwhile...

*After walking around the town I took the Knight's advice and borrowed a horse for the long journey. As we rode slowly towards the gates I noticed how quiet the Knights were towards me. As though ignoring the fact that I even existed. As we reached the gates Junior got the gate officer's attention by waving at him in a Knight's Salute*

Junior: Let us pass through the gates sir.

Officer: At who's orders?

Junior: My own. We have a delivery to make to a friend of mine.

Officer: *grumbling* Very well...

*As I watched from my horse something caused my head to turn around. The sounds of angry shouts and other people screaming brought my head around. My face remained calm when I realized who the three riders were that were charging through the crowd of innocent people. Not caring who they hurt they ran them over like a rampaging ogre to the slaughter. I quickly turned my horse and urged it through the slightly open gate and I heard one of the Hunters yell*

Alaron: Stop him! Damn! We must pursue! Leave the damned gates open you fools! Quickly with all due haste!

*looking back over my shoulder I noticed only two of them were followoing. I urged the horse to run as fast as it possibly could until we reached the edge of the forest that I emerged from only about a week before. Jumping off and slapping the horses rump to cause it to run off, hoping the two would follow it and buy me some time I headed into the wood as fast and nimble as possible...*

The Hunters again...

Abrecan: Sir Knight! Do you know with whom you were with? You could be well charged with a murderors accomplice if you hang around the wrong type! You're quite lucky that I showed up with my fellows to chase the scoundral off. That man's a notorious murderor. Killed whole family's as well as a great king's daughter. The poor, sorrow filled king begged my fellows and I to slay the rat for the murder of his only daughter. To this day we've been chasing him over the land and we shant stop until we have his head. I'm sorry to leave you on such short notice but I'm positive my fellows need my assistance.

*All Junior and his accomplace could do was sit astride their horses and stare in a rather shocked expression as the stranger rode out the gate after his lacky's*

Alaron: Becan! Follow the horse in case he's riding on it's side. We can't be overly certain otherwise we'd have lost him ages ago. I'll check to see if he ran off into the woods where the horse stopped only a second ago!

*As Becan nodded and rode after the horse Alaron flew to the edge of the trees and saw a figure deep in the forest running as fast as it was able. Smiling to himself he took out a pipe and some snuff and lit it and waited for Becan and Abrecan to return...*

My second appointment took place later that night.
It was necessary to wait. One did not make demands from Sister Vashka, even if you were the Holy Commander of the Order of the Sacred Sword.
Considered to be only second to Sister Madison in the arcane arts, she was the Orders premier teacher of divine mysteries to the younger paladins.

And firmly in his fist......

Even here in his own study it wasn't safe to be frank and open, but both he and Vashka were practised in euphemisms.

'Ah Vashka, I had been discussing with Ang-Ho that some of our more......promising recruits might receive 'special' weapons training. You know the ones I mean'.

She did, she had been instrumental in selecting most of them.

'In light of this I think it's time to start teaching the new mysteries we discussed. You know to be discreet'.

I knew she did.

She nodded and rose, 'It will be as you say.....Holy Commander'.
She exited the way she enteres, with a swish of her long black robes.

Goddess but nuns gave me the creeps sometimes.

there were fourteen of them all in all. Fourteen of the best. And they were to cancel their regular training of rightness and loyalty to start training as Barbarians and Orcs did, and still do, out in the wilderness. Ang-Ho watched the group as they sat still and watched him with their eyes.

Do you know why you are here?Ang-Ho asked them.
We know that we are to get special training, but not what kind of training, Sir! Rune was quick to answer Ang-Ho's question.
I have been assigned a task that involves you. You all here are to undergo training that comes from my homelands. Look at me. What am I?

An Orc?

Half-Orc to be exact, but that doesn't belong here. Yes, I'm an Orc. And do any one of you know someone that has ever fought an Orc?

I do. My great-grandfather was a mercernary. He said that there were some orcs attacking a wagon he and some other mercenaries defended. There were ten guards and four orcs. In the end, only five guards were left.

That was weak orcs. If I had lead that attack with my best warriors, they would not have had a chance of surviving. and That is what I will train you in. Survival. Speed. Power. Reflexes. Fear. All these are parts of the battlefield. You will have to master them all, Especially the ability to attack without fear. If you are afraid of death, then you are afraid of life. There is no death more honourable than the one on the battlefield.
Ang-Ho Talked to the youngsters while walking slowly from one point to another on the floor. Suddently, he stopped and went to a shelf where a battle axe awaited him.

This is my axe, forged by the master smith in my village. I have fought with this numerous times and killed countless enemies with it. I don't think I can ever erase these small parts of blood. Ang-Ho went silent for a minute, then he turned around to face the students
Be here at seven tomorrow. We will start off hard, so anyone missing, bad for you. Dismissed

Returning to my fortress I slipped out of the shadows and summoned my servant Beth.
Beth was a beautiful human woman who wished to be reinvented as a vampire and I was of a mind to give her the wish at th momnt, but I was just hungry.

'The lists I aske for. You have them?'
She nodded and stepped forward with a thick ream of papers.
'That will be all Beth' I told her.

I saw the brief disappointment flicker on her face as she left. It was best to keep the rewards sporadic, to encourage that she gave me the best service she could in hopes that today would be the day she joined the undead.

Putting her out of my mind I looked at lists of numbers.
The number of skeletal warriors we had, how many ghosts we had coerced into aiding us, how many of my vampire kin were willing to lead the army into battle.
Most importantly, where our next strike would be.

It would have to be somewhere out of the reach of those blasted paladins, but close enough that fingers would be ointed, that they could have done something.
It was a careful balance. At one side we slaughtered a whole town and gained new recruits, and at the same time the paladins reputation for fighting evil got tarnished.
Plus the new leader.....at that he laughed.
The new leader was gearing the paladins up for a confrontation with the King's forces, though the paladin's hadn't realised it yet.

He had to be careful that the neighbouring countries didn't interfere either, a necromancer that seemed too powerful soon found every land around him turned against him.

A very careful balance.
He penned an order for the slaughter of the settlement at the Raurian mines.
If that didn't upset the Kingdom then nothing would. Taxes would rise beacuse the gold would stop flowing.

And the finger would be pointed at the Order of the Sacred Sword........

Calhoun stood on the roof, watching Ellery on the balcony. The old man wasn't doing much. Just watching the landscape, watching the town. Watching. Doing nothing but watching. And he'd been doing the same thing for the past few hours.
You're worthless...
Ellery started at that. He looked around for the source of the sound. There was none.
You're despicable! A leech on the Order, taking in all and giving nothing back.
"What--? Who's saying that?" Ellery said.
Ha! I'm the voice of reason, your own subconscious mind! And you know this to be true; you are useless, worthless, a scoundrel! A plague!
"I'm not," Ellery said to himself. "I'm not."
You sit up here all day doing nothing.
"I can't do anything, I'm too old," he protested.
Old timers in the Order should be imparting their knowledge to the young, not daydreaming...

"Hey, Calhoun?"
Calhoun turned to see Ethan there, a young and strong boy that used to be responsible for ringing the bells an old church. "Hello, Ethan," he said.
"When-- ah, how did you get up here?" Ethan asked.
"Hm?"
"I've been up here a while now waiting for someone, and I never saw you go up the stairs," the boy said.
Calhoun smiled. "But just because you didn't see me in the stairwell doesn't mean I never ascended," he said. "Who are you waiting for?"
Ethan never answered the question for at that moment a loud thud sounded from the orchard. "What's--?" Ethan gasped, then ran up to the edge of the roof. "Ellery!"
Calhoun turned back towards the balcony to see that the old man was no longer there, but had fallen over the rail, or had been pushed over... or had thrown himself over. "That's not good," he observed.
"I'll go inform Sir Moridith," Edith said, and he ran off. He ran off down the stairs into the upper hallways, and shortly after Calhoun disappeared into the upper hallways as well.

*As I ran through the forest I kept looking back for my pursuers. I knew they wouldn't be in any hurry to finish me off since they seemed to be enjoying this hunt. Stopping at a nearby stream to splash water on my face to cool off I looked towards the north. I realized I was supposed to follow the two paladins but I wondered exactly why that stranger wanted us to follow them and why. And who was his "great master" that he kept refering to? Walking north I noticed that the trees got darker even though it was daytime. The ground seemed to get darker, almost black as though the land was dying. The further north I went the less birds and other animals I heard. Even farther the less green trees I saw. More dead trees were standing, dark rocks jutted up out of the ground. The green luscious forest ended and a dark swampy area shrouded in fog now lay before me. Looking around I drew my two scimitars and slowly proceded into the black mists*

Meanwhile

*When the other two riders finally showed up Becan finally asked*

Becan: Well? Did you see him?

Abrecan: Yes...he ran into the forest.

Alaron: *sighing* Well, let's get going, I'm getting sick of chasing this recluse.

Becan: I agree, I want to get back on with my own life before this blasted adventure started.

*As the other two nodded, thinking very much the same thing, they headed into the woods*

The journey was north, down from the range of the Severyn Mountains, down into the Valley of Syvall. They were cold lands, and dry lands at that. The farther down the mountains they went, they found that autumn had already come to these lands and beautiful leaves of green and red filled the canopies as they ventured down the long winding road to Gaerule.

Junior greatly admired the trees in remorse for every paladin knew that throughout each and every quest nature would send omens. And the falling of leaves was certainly not the omen he wished to see. Gunnar slowed his pace to a walk, and gazed up at the fire-stained wonders above him. His breath was heavy from the long run.

"Aren't the trees..." he took a breath. "Beautiful?"

"Of course they are," said Junior quite frankly. "but they are soon to fall and lose their beauty. That is why we must hurry, before it is too late."

"Do you think they won't fall if we hurry?" laughed Gunnar. "I'm pretty sure they will fall whether or not we hurry. Don't worry though they will grow back like they do every year. Look see these pines trees never even lose their leaves."

"I don't need a lesson in botany."

"Then why do you act as if leaves falling is the end of the world?" Gunnar laughed at his joke, but soon retorted as he saw Junior storm off ahead down the path.

Knight had made his way back to the guild quickly; the blow he took to the head was minor. Taking the forest path he saw Jon entering the hall before him.

Knight pushed past and ignored him, walked straight to his den. His legs were aching, but no matter how physically drained he felt, Knight knew that this deal had to go on.
He collapsed into the chair and sighed, and felt his eyes like heavy curtains trying to close.

"Must stay awake."Standing up, he rang the bell to call for a meeting, and headed back into the hall.
Surprisingly all who were present in the guild were already at the table. Knight did not bother to sit down, but began to speak.

"My brothers. I know that those of you who have been with me for the past couple of days must be feeling very tired-"
"Not me sir-!"Jon interrupted, but Knight glared at him and he was silent.
Clearing his throat, Knight continued.

"However the events that have been scheduled for today must take place. The higher ranked ones among us know that today is the day that we deal with the Devil Triton Clan."Cedric gasped at the far end of the table.

"Correct. To have dealings with The Devil Triton clan is no mean feat, they are very dangerous and very powerful... but as we surely know, with power comes wealth. This cult worships evil deities and unknown powers that our minds cannot comprehend, and would willingly sacrifice anyone to honour their God. We must watch our every move, fortunately there is a business proposition they have for us, a task they cannot complete by themselves, this alone should keep us from immediate danger."
A high ranked assassin, who was referred to as Shade, stood up to pose a question.

"Sir, if you do not mind me asking, but what is our half of this... proposition? What shall we gain as a guild?"
For this Knight had a simple answer.
"Diplomatic immunity."

Walking amongst the Mists...

*As I walked through the fog I felt as though it were closing in on me. I could barely see a foot in front of me and could hardly hear the crunching of leaves under my feet. I kept stumbling and tripping over unseen objects and wondered where this path would lead too. As I walked my unseen path farther and farther I kept getting the strange feeling as thought something or someone was watching me, yet I couldn't decipher as to where it was coming from. After walking what felt like hours and not knowing if day was dusk or vice versa I came out at the top of a cliff with a large field below me. I could have sworn I saw two figures way out on the open plain but I couldn't be sure and didn't want to be caught on the edge of this cliff with nowhere to run if the huntsmen were chasing me. I sheathed my scimitars and quickly scrambled over the edge. Climbing about half way down I was lucky enough to come across a cave where I decided to spend the night in some relative peace*

The Hunters

*getting tired of wandering around the outside of the shrouded woods our three hunters come to a drastic decision*

Becan: Great, we're all terrified to go in there and we're the three most dangerous killers on this damn planet!

Abrecan: Quit your whining. I say we follow those Knights he was with. He must have started out with them for a reason. I'll be he'll tail them and keep to the shadows if he knows where he's goin.

Alaron: Well, since we ain't got any better ideas we might as well. But hurry, we'll have to catch up since they probably got a good couple days' advantage over us.

*With that the three jumped on their horses, riding out of the woods back onto the open plain...*

Alex looked at the giant man lying by the fire who was fast asleep. The day's travel was grueling and it showed in Gunnar, but Alex acted as if he was possessed. He sat wide awake and it was nearly dawn. He knew he desperately needed rest for the following day's travel, but something was unsettling him. Calhoun had not come with him. The words of Rhav's warning rung in his mind. There was nothing he could have done to convince him to come.

How could he face his Goddess and tell her that he could not convince Calhoun to come? She told him that if he stayed in Severyn Heights he would be put into grave danger. He stood up and threw a few more small pieces of wood on the fire. Junior looked through the trees at the horizon and sighed. The sky was getting brighter and so the paladin gave up all hopes of sleeping. He pulled out a pan from his pack and cooked up some oatmeal on the fire.

The aroma quickly brought Gunnar out of his deep sleep, but not quicker than the Sun who seemed to jump up to greet Junior warming his face almost immediately. Junior had a bad feeling about this day. The breeze was colder than the day before and the first leaves had begun to fall. Gunnar rubbed his eyes and let out a yawn as he woke up. He took a deep breath and grunted with pleasure at the smell of breakfast. With a big smile, he greeted his cook.

"Good morning, Sir Frostway."

Setting the bottle down on the table I looked at it's silvery glow.
A bottle of Holy Man's Doubt was extremely rare to come by, and this was made more potent by the fact that the man had thrown himself from the balcony.

Bah! Holy Man. A few whispers in his ear was all it took. His intricate knowledge of all the Paladins made it so easy to choose his target well.

The next one might not be so easy.....

But he still had work to do. Turning to the other man stting at the table he gave him his most penetrating gaze.
To the man's credit he didn't flinch, but his hands moved inside his long sleeves nervously. Of course it was impossible to see his face because of the iron Devils mask he wore, but he knew this man to his darkest depths.
It was I that started the Devil Triton Clan. A group of demonologists under my wing had proved very useful in the past, since the most I could summon were a few imps.

'This 'agreement' with the Thieves Guild. I didn't authorise it. Are you rising above your station Brother Malignant?'

Shifting in his seat the man squirmed. 'N -no Great Lord. It seemed the correct thing to do. Recruiting the thieves will allow us to direct them more closely than before. With them carrying out our contracts the cursed Paladins will look even more helpless. The people will lose faith in them and look to the King for protection.
If as you say, their new Holy Commander is readying for a confrontation with the King, the people will see the cursed Paladins attacking the man that protects them.
Much damage will be done to their repuation, then when the final stage of the plan comes to pass, there will only be a weakened Order left to fight us'.

I stared at him for a while longer, just for effect, then broke into a wide smile. Which also served to intimidate. A vampires smile is never that pleasant to look at.

'You have done well Brother Malignant. And what have you offered the thieves in return for their....helping us'.

'...Diplomatic Immunity. Though they believe it to be from the King's forces and the order. What I meant was that I wouldn't send any of our demons after them when the day of Ascension comes.
Though I suppose until then we'll have to make an attempt at protecting them from the authorities otherwise they won't survive to carry out what we want them to do'.

I felt a tingle through my body. One of the wards I'd set far away had been triggered. I needed to be somewhere else.

'You have done well I told Brother Malignant', standing up and moving to the corner of the room.

Finding the edge of shadow that I needed to Travel, Brother Malignant was left sitting alone at the table.

*In the morning I awoke to a scream from outside the cave. Crawling towards the mouth and looking both up and down I saw nothing. Getting towards the side I looked down and saw a body lying at the bottom of the cliff. Hearing cackling voices from the top I looked up but couldn't see anything for a moment. But then I saw something, at least I THOUGHT I saw something. It appeared to be a skeleton! I shook my head and looked again, indeed it was. A skeleton stood at the top of the cliff before turning back into the black fog. Wondering how abominations are now walking the land I realized for what purpose I may have been sent to follow the two Paladins. My mind raced with thoughts of betrayel and of an effort to save the town incase my fears were an actual reality. Climbing down the cliff I jumped from the last twenty feet up and landed in a roll to reduce the impact of my fall. I stood up, brushed off and inspected the body of the dead man. He seemed about 30 and didn't appear dangerous, that is until his dead body jerked and stood up. I was a little shocked and watched as it shambled stiffly off along the side of the cliff. Shaking my head I set out across the plains towards the other side and hopefully some sort of refuge...*

It seemed like ages since he had last set eyes upon his home, and with each passing day he travelled, Lokali wished more and more that there was someone there to let him know that he was cared for. But as it stood, he was simply being watched over, guided by something that could have been friend or foe. It did not matter whether the voice led him toward his goal or toward peril, the young lich was tired of staying where he was. It was time to move, forward or backward. So on he moved.

Day slipped into night, and Lokali soon found himself passing through a forest, one that looked less than welcoming at night. But he was not afraid, for it was him that was the abomination to fear in woods such as these, a fact that he desperately wished to change, but couldn't. As the woods closed in all around him, Lokali suddenly spotted the flickering dance of shadows amongst the trees, a signal that a fire was nearby. Against his better judgement, the young lich made his way over to see whose fire it was.

But the camp was abandoned, at least for the moment. The shadows cast were merely those of hunting gear, dreadful tools that seemed to frightening to use on animals, too costly to waste on such trivial game. No, these were hunters of humans. He snuck warily into the camp, and began to look through the various items that dotted the campsite. All were honed for the killing, focused on one target, but who? Who was worthy of such attention? He pondered these things aloud, and, quite shockingly got a response.

"His name is Gorman," said a figure, as he stepped out from a darkened alcove between two trees, making sure to keep his distance from Lokali. The young boy’s stench had never been much of a problem, as everyone he had known was undead. Now that he had met someone who was not dead, new problems arose. The man continued, "The real question is, why are we so worthy of your attention, boy?" He slowly advanced toward Lokali, causing the young lich to draw back, right near where a second hunter waited.

"This is not your lucky day, is it?" he said with a chuckle, then, looking up at the second figure, he continued, "What should we do with this one? He knows who we are hunting now."

"I would say we should kill him, but it seems someone already beat us to that," he responded, making clear his disdain for the undead.

A third figure emerged from the darkness and glared at the other two, "I told you we needed not camp here, now this boy is distracting us from our goal. Stop playing games and lets pack up. This delay has lasted long enough."

"No need to get so touchy, Abrecan. We still know where we are going, why we are here in this mudhole in the first place. We won't lose them."

You say that know, but we know not where he is headed."

And the argument continued, Lokali all the while plotting an escape. He had nowhere to go, however, as the third hunter still kept a wary eye on him. No, Lokali had no way out of this one. He glanced down at the ground where the hunters' tools lay, and grinned to himself, perhaps overconfident in his abilities. He was, after all, only a child. The young lich bent to pick up a nearby longsword, and lunged quickly at the hunter. The other two stopped and looked over at their comrade and the lich. Lokali's efforts were in vain, though, as the hunter easily dodged his attack and snatched the dagger from his hand, knocking the young lich to the floor.

"I say we carve this one apart and scatter him all over the forest," he said, rather agitatedly.

"Alright, let's do that, but first, we'll pack up our things. That boy's not likely to wake up for a while.

But the undead were more resilient than any other race would guess, and Lokali stood as the three began to gather their weapons. With a flash, he was gone. As the hunters' eyes regained their focus, the young boy was nowhere to be found.

"Bah, no need to worry about that one. Let's continue our hunt." And off they went.

Lokali sprinted through the woods, reaching its end as the first morning light shone above the horizon. The sun was never a good omen for the undead, and it rose every morning, despite their attempts to stop it. Lokali hurried in the direction he had been pointed, slowing due to the sunrise, and began to wonder what he would do once he arrived. The paladins would hardly accept an undead in as a welcome guest. Instead, they'd have his head on a pike. At least they were more reasonable than the undead. Or so he hoped.

He was soon standing at the gate of his destination, wondering whether he should turn back. But he remembered his goal, and called up to the gatekeeper.

"I need to speak with the man in charge. Tell him its urgent."

The female gatekeeper scoffed at the young boy's assumption that the leader was a man, then withdrew into the Order to see if Blackfist would accept the undead in. Now was the moment of truth.

The day was a grueling onex stopping only once for water and another time for lunch. An hour after sunset, the road took us out of the woods and into flat farm land. We were just outside of Gaerule. The town sat on both sides of the border between the two provinces.

The landscape was nothing but dried up dirt. The trees down in the valley had already lost it's leaves. It was very unnatural for there to be such a different between the losing of leaves between a journey of a mere two-day travel. Junior sped up ahead of Gunnar, impatient to get into town. He knew he must find the Moxiel Gem before it was too late, before Calhoun was in danger.

"Hey wait up!" yelled Gunnar.

"I'll meet you in town. We're almost there." Junior called back.

"It's important. Come back." yelled Gunnar. Junior was furious. He turned Beauty around and rode back full tilt at Gunnar.

"What do you want now? We have very little time to complete this journey. We need no delays, so if you excuse me I will be headed into town."

"You might not want to do that." Junior was outraged at the flat contradiction.

"AND WHY IS THAT? YOU WOULDN'T HAPPEN TO KNOW A BETTER PLACE TO FIND A MOXIEL GEM WOULD YOU!"

"No, but-"

"But what?"

"We passed by a graveyard after you sped off. The graves were all dug up. I'm sure if we went back they would be empty too." Junior was silent. He looked down the road towards town. It was worse than he had feared. Yet he was almost relieved about the situation. There was no way Calhoun could have faced the undead in combat again.

"Inform the order of this. Go as fast as you possibly can. The journey will be very tough going uphill, so don't run your horse to death. It will be a few days to get back up. I will head into town hopefully to warn the town of a planned attack." The young man looked distraught. He wanted to fight by the side of Sir Frostway. He worried about his superior.

"Don't you want help if the town is plagued by undead?" asked Gunnar.

"The town is not plagued by the undead. I am going to inform them of a planned attack. I will do the same for the towns ahead. You must head back to inform the Council. They will know what to do." Frostway had lied to the young recruit rather than to tell him that he was not prepared to have dealings with the undead. Having him come along would only lead him to his death. He was not trained in the holy magics to have any dealings with the undead. He watched Gunnar reluctantly speed off down the road back to Severyn Heights.

Junior took a deep breath knowing that he was going to have to fight the undead by himself, a thought unsettling on its own even to fight the undead with numerous paladins at your side. But he knew must keep the armies at bay before they grew too large. The undead was a nuissance that would snowball if left unchecked.

The paladin gave Beauty a sharp slap on the shoulder and took off like a bullet. It took but a few minutes to arrive at the edge of town. He stopped and looked around. He saw nothing. He heard nothing. He whispered a short prayer asking for blessings in the name of Rhav and took off to search through the town. He headed down the twisting street looking down each alley as he passed by. It was as if the town was gone. There was no sign of battle. He headed down street after street finding not a single pool of blood, not a battered door, not a broken window until he had found his way to the commons.

It was a small child standing against a tree crying. As Junior got closer the child turned around and looked up at Junior. The child stopped crying and simply stared at him.

"Hello there, my lad." The child remained silent.

"What's your name?" The child smiled at him, but it did not fool Junior who immediately identified the smile to be false. He unsheathed his sword and looked behind him and saw a dozen zombies headed his way. The groans were unmistakable. Calling out to Rhav he raised his sword and it began to glow. He pointed his sword at the child and a giant beam of light shot out from its tip disintegrating what was once an innocent child. However the mob of zombies was now but a few yards away and closing. Junior would have charged them had he not heard the flapping of wings. Vampires flew in from behind trapping him. Junior would have to fight his way to freedom.

Abrecan: Hurry, there's a town up ahead, perhaps we'll catch up to them here.

*As the three rode on they took note of the peculiar sitings of the cemetary that lay just on the outskirts of the village*

Becan: Something don't seem right lads...draw your weapons. Be ready for anything!

*As they drew their weapons and got closer to the village they noticed a rather odd site*

Alaron: Good, they must be here. The horses are still alive...but where are they?

Abrecan: *pointing* Follow the trail of undead...they're like blood hounds but not as friendly!

*Jumping down from their horses and running towards the zombies in fear that the Paladins may already be among the ranks of the undead. Abrecan, charging amongst the ranks first, whirling his double-ended sword around him in a deadly dance started chopping up the undead as though they were in a blender. Body parts were scattering everywhere and even fallen limbs attempted to grasp onto their attackers. Becan went from one zombie to another with his battle axes, chopping off body parts so quickly he was a blur to see in action. Alaron ran into the middle of a few zombies and swung his quarterstaff around his head so mightily that he managed to decapitate each zombies head that he was near when suddenly he felt something bump into him from behind. He whipped around ready to deal a crushing blow when he stopped a hair's breadth from hitting the person*

Alaron: Hey Junior! Me thinks your friendly little town of undead people here don't be liking your company...what are you staring at lad?

*Just then he notices the vampires advancing with sinister grins on their faces as their fangs lower, anxious to fill their forever empty stomachs*

Becan: Damn! Paladin! You got a god! Start prayin! Call down his bloody holy wrath or something! Cast those undead's back to their graves! Or better yet, burn them to dust so they can't come after us any longer! *stomps on a zombie hand that was attempting to "strangle" his ankle*

Abrecan: Either that boy or start pumping those legs and pray the sun comes up....hurry boy! CHOOSE!

Vampires

The raid had went well. Most of the population were slaughtered quickly. The few that had any magical ability were carried off for 're-education'.
Now it was just a case of 'round up the zombies' and let the last remaining survivor free to spread the word to the surrounding towns, and eventually the cities.

At least, until the Paladin had arrived. Ghasketh had warned them about this Paladin and they had prepared well. But they hadn't counted on the three elves that had joined in the fray.

'We have no quarrel with you elves. Move aside and you will be allowed to leave. We just want the Paladin', said Varth, the leader of the vampires as they crept closer.

Sir Frostway took a step forward. He grasped his sword with both hands and the sword burst into flames. He raised it above his head and called silently to his Goddess.

He lounged forward and thrust his sword. The vampires, who were safely out of reach, laughed at his attack on thin air. Their laughs subsided to grimaces as a bolt of fire shot out from the flaming sword. The head vampire was still alive, but it was badly hurt. It retreated to the air in its flying form knowing another blast of fire would be the end of it. The vampires had scattered disappearing into the air. So Junior called to his Goddess once more.

"In the grace of Rhav, banish this scourge," he yelled. A ball of light formed above the paladin. It grew and grew illuminating the entire commons around him. But suddenly the ball of light darkened into a dark red and vanished.

"What magic is this?" Junior looked at the hunters in fear, motioning them to hightail it.

Hurrying to take my place I reached my desk and lifted up a random piece of parchment, assuming an air of imaptience as the knock on his door sounded.

'Yes what is it!' I called as the gatekeeper entered. Martha I think her name was.

'Holy Commander sir!' she barked, saluting. 'There's a young boy at the gates. At least he seems to be a young boy. I haven't had the priests look at him, but I think he could be undead. He has asked to see you sir.
Sir, if I may speak freely, I think this is an obvious trap. Though why the necromancers would send so obvius a trap escapes me'.

I let her go on without cutting her off, thinking hard. Damn it! I hadn't expected this so early!

'Bring him to me'. I told the gatekeeper brusquely.

'But sir!' she exclaimed. 'You can't be seri-'

'Do it!' I bellowed. 'Do you think the Holy Commander of the Order of the Sacred Sword is defenseless!'.

Hefting my sword I let a trickle of magic fill it, causing it to glow a muted red. She got the point.

'Bring him to me. But do not take any chances. Go find Sirs Withers, Marrow and Killik. Have them escort the boy here through the back entrance. Then come back here, I have an errand for you.

The three knights I'd mentioned were all strong in the Power, but more importantly, they would tell no-one about the strange child that had shown up.
As for the gatekeepers errand....she wouldn't be telling anyone anything after it.
