Hmm, if you guys have essay contests, I might join one. Just IM me when that happens, cos i'm not a regular bard as you are.
My eyes hurt on this forum's startings page.

No problem. The regulars aren't as interested in RPing as they used to be, so hopefully we might get some interesting stuff going on in this thread.

Oh yeah by essay contests, I guess I didn't mean something technical like making an arguement. I meant more like something creative, fantasy or non-fantasy. However probably fantasy since that's what a majority of us like.

Alright here's the first contest and the ground rules.

1.) Create a completely new character using Khaelo's chart thingy.

2.) Put him/her/it into a life or death situation.

3.) The piece of writing ends when the character dies or finds a way out alive.

4.) No limit in length.

5.) All pieces are due by the 15th. Extensions may be given if the assignment is found to be too large to do effectively.

6.) Post any part of your work as you make it if you wish. I'm sure that we can get nice feedback from each other this way.

New as in "freshly concieved from scratch," or new as in "never before seen on HC?"

I haven't found the chart very helpful as a character generator, so to speak, only as a tool to improve existing characters.  So, my preference is the lazy second option.    Is that an acceptable route?

I kind of like the "from scratch" idea, but perhaps that might be too difficult for a first competition. What do you guys think?

From scratch could work for me.
I have a few characters still to be introduced in my Foraken War story, this could be a good excercise to build them up better in my own head.

Lysimach Psell was found in the remote woods of mount Orat, near the Temple of Ma, goddess of destiny, light and truth, protector of seers and weaver of dreams. The priestess that brought him in the Temple is told to have had a vision of a helpless baby hidden under a tree, and guided by mysterious visions in the middle of the night, she found him under that very tree and took him back to the Temple. There, Lysimach was raised and educated as one of the High Priests of Ma. Ever since he was little, he used to have visions of future events in his dreams, not vague and uncertain as the other seers, but amazingly vivid and clear, exactly as if they happen in reality. - (…) As Lysimach’s dreams started to involve himself, and as his predictions never failed him, he began to question his freedom, and the freedom of everything there is. A growing feeling of hatred and rebellion started to emerge inside him, replacing his former unquestionable faith in Ma. Only two days until the deadline. How is everyone coming with their stories?

Edit: I have talked with a couple people and have come to the conclusion that people are busy and won't have enough time. I am included. So rather than simply extending the deadline. I will ask what everyone would like to do and then we will vote for the idea we like best. It might take a couple days, but I think it would be in the best interests of everyone to do it this way.

ack!

What the...???  I just finished my piece!  It's PG-13, CoC compliant, and everything.  What do I do with it now?  It needs help before I can bring it to class.

Ai, ah well.  Whatever you guys decide with regard to deadlines is okay by me, since mine's done.

Nothing's wrong with the CoC.  It just becomes surprisingly difficult to write a story about a succubus and remain within the CoC when one likes to include a lot of detail.    Fortunately, I managed.

E-mailing...watch out, it's 12 pages.

Edit:  If we're not doing this "life or death situation" scenario over here, does anyone mind if I toss my story into my Tamika thread?  (The main story of that is currently besieged by a bad case of writer's block.  )

Does Writers' Guild material have to stay in the Writers' Guild thread?  I want to post my story, since it was a lot of work, but no one else is posting theirs.  So, I could just put it in the fiction thread I've already got in the Tavern (interluding the ongoing story there).  Would that disrupt the organization here?

Not at all. Feel free to post it here as well as we lazier people begin to get in gear.

As for the vote, I'd say either Wednesday or Next Saturday, and that we need also to leave the prompt as it is. No need to change it or make it easier, IMO.

I'm submitting this introduction to a story I am going to write.

Everyone, at some point in their life, will be betrayed, persecuted, caught between the quarrel of others, or maybe just dragged into trouble by peers. It is important to remain true to yourself and not let those things misdirect you from the path that defines yourself. I had to learn that the hard way. I had been betrayed, persecuted, caught between the quarrel of others and I was even dragged into the life of a person who I was not. It only took a few rash decisions to get myself into a world of trouble. I spent nearly my entire life striving to return to my true path.

I still remember the day when it all started, the trouble that is. It was the day when my innocence was lost. I could not have imagined all the cruel things the world could bring me. Young and foolish as I was, I ran after those that had taken my innocence with vows of vengence. I had no idea what other troubles would work their way into my life as I strayed farther and farther from the path that I was meant to take.

Do you want comments on that?  It's hard to evaluate it without knowing where it's going.

Edit:  deleted post replaced: If we are evaluating...I think the second paragraph would do better as the first because its opener is more gripping.  You want to nab the reader as soon as possible.  Addition:  I guess I just don't find abstract philosophizing all that enthralling as an opening, unless it's a very unusual voice, which this isn't.  I'd like to get tossed into the story part before dealing with that.
