MOO3 SUCKS!!

I actually bought MOO3 a couple months ago because I saw it brand new for $10 at my local EBGames.  I figured for that price nothing to lose rigt?  GOD! do I ever want my money back.  Installed the game last night and was playing it to give it a fair chance after the demo pissed me off.  Anyway I gave it a good 3 hours I think before I gave up.  I really don't think there is a way for anyone to make me play that game again short of offering me lots of $$$$$$.
One thing I know for certain though is that if there is ever a MOO4 that the chances of me buying it are like 1 in 100.

Na, I just choose Telepathic and take over other peoples planets.  While subterenean is great I never choose it unless it's like Huge galaxy and usually prefer Tolerant at that point which makes you able to ignore polution on planets you colonize.

Anyway I am usually Repulsive since any damn time I am not the first 3 races I run into have a 75% chance of them being repulsive for some reason.

I evidently love this game, though I haven't played it for a while since it will always crash at some point. But it was a terrific playground for strategic experiments.

In a large or huge universe, I like picking +1 Sci, Unification, Creative, Large Home World and -10 Combat, -10 Spying and Low-G as negative picks (leaving 2 plus picks). Once I research Evolutionary Mutation, I pick Telepathic and finish my opponents in the endgame (if I have the patience for that). (I need a lot of spies before I can visit Orion, though.)
Quote:

It's one of the best abilities, but that doesn't mean you should pick it. It's useless in the early game. Instead, once you run into the Sakkra, conquer one of their systems, assimilate them and start shipping the conquered Sakkra to your rich and ultra rich planets while moving your own (+1 Sci) colonists off to poor planets (preferably in the same system). The conquered Sakkra will benefit from your Unification and still augment the population limit on the planets (which will be tremendously productive). You can also do that with the Meklars (+2 Ind), the Klackons (+1 Ind) or the Psilons (+2 Sci). The Silicoids (tolerant, lithovore) are not so good, because they grow very slowly. Generally, the most important picks to choose are those that apply to the empire, and not just to the colonists (Government, Creative, Telepathic …).

[edit: sorry, forgot something (TNT will like it): I always choose the Elerians' picture for the custom race. They are the deadliest opponent to my strategic habits.]

It's really boring and dull, like editing spreadsheets, and the AI is bad too (at least in the Mac version). I also put it aside after some hours playing. Farewell, MoO.

Small and Med

One of the best things to choose when playing a Small to Med galaxy with lots of players is Warlord. Gives +4 ship points right away and +2 for every colony you have.

I mean ever have one of those games where the 2-3 other planets in your system are pretty good and certainly better than the ones in the surrounding solar systems?

Home planet +2 colonies in the same system give you 12 ship points right off without the other two having to have a starbase even, 14 if they do. That's like 2 Battle ships and a cruiser+ 1 scout.

Plus with Warlord ability your ships level up faster in exp.

Wouldn't know becuase I am Repulsive %90 of the time.  Any time I am not half the others are.  I don't think you could be playing at Impossible level either.  If you are you have such a good lead it doesn't matter if they give up or not.

I usally choose:

* Creative
* +2 RP
* Subterran
* Large Home World

It alows you to quickly out run the other and gain superiority by quality and not quantity

REVIVED

I've switched from Baldur's Gate to Master of Orion 2 (so expect a LOT of MoO2 reference for the next few weeks )

Psilons and Sakkra seems good, so are the Sillicoid.

However, I cannot seem to beat the game with any race (imcluding custom races) with a difficulty about average... So any strategy tips?

Nebdar? Where are you? I need oyu man

I played moo2 on a MAC way back when I was just a wee little noob and it was my favorite game. I usually picked lithovore because I wasn't yet clever enough to understand that cybernetic is more efficient. I never did master the battle system. The only way I could win is by building ginormous fleets of the largest ship classes.

Well, I've understood that Lithovore + Democracy is a VERY good combination It's a real Research Machine.

Due to the difficulty level, I hardly ever play as Custom.

Of the games I've played I've only one three: One with the Sakkra, one with the Sillicoids, and one with the Psilon.

All three of them seem to be strong factions, with the Psilon being easily the mmost powerfull. End-game is crazy with your over-powered Fleets (though early game is very slow)

Sillicoids and Sakkra have a Very FAST start. They'll have many star-systems before they even meet someone.

Also, with the Sillicoids, I've discovered that the "repulsive" trait is a HUGE asset when it comes to spying. I comntantly steal techs from the others (including aggressive Races like the Sakkra and Klackons), and THEY DONT DECLARE WAR UPON ME!!
LOOOOL!! Spying never was so easy I steal or destroy everything that isn't nailed to the floor, and get away with it, each and every time. Sooo broken, lol.

I like the Silicoids.  They can survive on planets others must 'terraform' before they can survive.  Gives them a huge advantage in the early going.  Their slow population growth can be overcome.

Custom is pretty amazing though.  I usually choose the 'adaptability' and low growth of the Silicoids with the research of the Psi.  (Ie get everything in the research tree instead of just one).  Works pretty good.  I forget the exact build, it has been eons.

Yeah, the Sillicoids are great imo...

You don't need to build a LOT of stuff; Pollution Processors, Hydropinic and Subterran Farms, Atmosphere Renewers, Terraforming, Soil Enrichment... BANG, don't need it!

So all the time I usually spend on building these things, I spend on ships and spies. Like I said, the Repulsive trait makes sure that your rivals WILL NOT attack you because of your spies! Espionage is even easier than with the Darlocks

Psilons are good (love the technology bonuses) but they are really slow at the beginning.  If you don't know exactly what you are doing with them you get trampled most of the time.

I am addicted to have all researches races so i always pick creative and +2 reserch custom made races. I usually pick the picture to eliminate possible opponet from that race or just because i like the banner and thw workers pictures, and of course you take with the choosen picture the type of how do other races see you, pick wise (Humans, psilons,)

there is an Forum where you will find almost every thing you need.

Ok my usually and constant pick is:

- +2 Research
- Creative
- Subterranean
- Dictatorship
- -10 Spy
- -10 Ground Combat
- -20 Ship Defense
- -20 Ship Attack
- Large Home World (if don't use an special tool )

My game sets are currently:

*Hard
*Huge Galaxxy
*Average Galaxxy Age
*8 players (if you don't feel well with your skills try multiplayer Hot Seat mode and give the second race Omniscent, and you will see all, very usefull skill, and you will always have an ally)
*Pre-Warp
*Random Events
*Tactic combat
*Antarans

Red, Green, Yellow, White, and Blue color gives cool looking ships( If you didn't knew you can change how they look if you click design in planet (what to produce menu).

If you don't have good starting star system (at least 2-3 planets with Abundant Minerals) better start again or use a littlle tool( It is savegame editor but i mainly use it to edit the star map, by changing the postion of stars, the planet structure of the star systems, changin Black Holes into Star systems and so on... There is only one thing the languege used in this tool is German, but it is well made so you will learn what i what.)

For my scientific races the most crucial is the first steps of developmentso what to research first and next)

1. Electronics
2. Optronics (Build Research Lab) your first boost
3. Astro Biology
4. Advanced Engineering
5. Advanced Construction (Automated Factories)
6. Nuclear Fission
7. Chemistry
8. Physics
9. Cold Fusion
10. Artificial Intelligence
11. Positronics (Planetary Supercomputer, Holo Simulator) your breakpoint, start colonising as much planets as possible
12. Advanced Biology (cloning Center, Soil Enrichment)
13. Advanced Fusion
14. Advanced Metalurgy
15. Capsule Construction
16. Astro Engineering (Spaceport)
17. Robotics (RoboMiners)
18. Advanced Magnetism
19. Advanced Chemistry (Pollution Proccesor)
20. Molecular Compression (Atmospheric Renewer) (here can be need to built warships to defend your self)
21. Fusion Physics
22. Tachyon Physics
23. Military Tactics
24. Xeno Relations
25. Macro Economics (Stock Exchange)
26. Teaching Methods (Astro Univerity)
27. Nano Technology (NanoDissassemblers, Microlite Construction)
28. Genetic Engineering
29. Genetic Mutations (Terraforming)
30. Artificial Consciousness
31. Cybertronics (Autolab)
32. Macro Genetics (Weather Control System)
33. Evolutionary Genetics (Psonics, Heighted Intelligence) After this all of your oppossiton will be in the Stone Age comparing to you. Nothing can stop you now
34. Neutrino Physics
35. Artificial Gravity (Planetary Gravity Generator, Graviton Beam)
36. Gravitic fields
37. Magneto Gravitics (planetary Radiation Shield)
38. Cybertechnics
39. Galactic Networking ( +30% Morale, Galactic Cybernet)
40. Advanced Goverments (Imperium stikes back)
41. ServoMechanics
42. Astro Construction
43. Advanced Manufacturing (Recyclotron)
44. Advanced Robotics (Robotic Factory)
45. Tectonic Engineering (Deep Core Facilities, no more pollution and extra cash from automatic demolishing of Pollution proccessor and Atmosheric Renewer)
46. SubSpace Physics
The rest is just formality

Make as much trade treaties as possible, give for free an lower(irrelevant) tech to bribe the good mood of the other races. If you don't have to built ships to defend yourself in the early stage don't waste time on it.(there is research to do ) But build unarmed Scouts.

What can i say more, this strategy gives such an advantage in the midd game so it can become boring in the end game.

I have played also with Unifaction races.

As an tip if you are extremley advanced Physics, Energy, Force Fields due to minitaruzation your ships will be uberpowerfull, 6 Stellarconverters with systems on Doom star

I must try Elarians some day...

Antarians are a pain.  They seemed to choose me over others more often then they should.  Then when you finally beat them back, the rest of the universe follows up with an attack.  I still won, but it could get dicy usually.

From what I've learned from other Forums, I've seen (and tested) Lithovore + Democracy (a Crazy Science Machine) and Unification + Tolerant (a crazy Production machine )

Both are powerfull.

Antarans.... I hate to have over-powerfull opponents, so I never pick "Antarans attack."

And the Elerians seem like A weak race to me. They do not fit my strategy of quick research and expansion.

If you fight Anatarans you must have

Hard Shields(immune to those Shield piercing weapons),
Scout Lab in one Ship or Special Leaders with Lore Ability.
Stasis Field does wonders if you know how to use it,
Phasing Cloak if they can see they can't harm you
Time Warp Facilitator you are so fast

With Stasis Field you can Stasis, Wait, Release from Stasis, Fire, Stasis, Wait and this all over again. They will not even strike back.
