It's not about best town though, it's about the town you just happen to like the most, at least it's that way I understand this poll. I know dungeon isn't the best town, but I do like the units, even if only 2 of them are the same as in heroes 2 (griffins, please come back ). I get bored a lot easier when playing with for example castle or fortress, so even if I did play enough to become a veteran dungeon would still be the town I liked the best.

Btw, wasn't there some player way back that really kicked ass with dungeon?

I always pick evil towns so its a tie between dungeon and necopolis.

Dungeon : Alamar or Dace
Necropolis: Isra or Lord Haart

I am a noob, but I play heroes 3 alot and I really like the Dungeon.
Especially the ones that are underground and at the end of a twisted path, and were it takes the AI forever to figure out where you are and all that time you have been building your forces.
But I don't like when it is above ground and easy to get to, I think the Dungeon needs some time to grow, to be effective but that is just me. Like when I play against the computer I take all the towns but the game doesn't end, and then I realize there is a subterrean gate, I had forgotten all about the Dungeon and so I think that is an effective strategy in itself.
I also find the Mana Vortex and the Portal of Summoning to be quite invaluable.
But I'm a noob and don't really know what I am talking about. I have also heard that in a long drawn out map the Dungeon will lose out to the Fortress because of it's defense, and the Necropolis because of it's skelteons.

I like necro for several reasons:
1) It is stronger than any other listed town on relatively large maps.
2) I think power liches are the coolest archer. Waaaay stronger than their castle counterparts.
3) I like fighting with vamp lords.
4) Dread knights look very very cool, especially their special. "Thump, thump, thump, whamm! whoosh... paff!"

Of course Necro comes out best of the five, but for it's banned most of the time, and can't choose Castle (noob or not, I really feel for this race, starting with my early campaigning), I went for Rampart because of the most hit points and cheaper costs (plus the treasury). And it seems I always struggle with Castle against it.

Why is going for creature dwellings ealry good?  what's the point of getting high level monsters on week 1 if you are broke?

I like to get city hall first.  It just takes 4 turns to build.

I go level 2 dwelling, level 3 dwelling, then

mage guild, marketplace, blacksmith, city hall.

then citadel

The extra cash is helpful.  So is the mage guild, which lets your kill mobs early on (magic arrow) without needing powerful units.

Then on week 2 day 1, I can get a level 4 dwelling, and this leaves me with a good army with which to kill stuff.  By the end of week 2 I like to have a capitol - how is this a bad thing?

I find getting lots of creature dwelling only works on lower difficulty, where you can afford to.   You don't start off with many resources on harder levels - 0 resources on impossible.

So how is getting capitol early a bad tactic (as in somewhere by week 2)?  You're losing 4k gold per turn by delaying it.  You're not going to have enough treasure chests to sustain your high level armies for long.

Actully uve already spent about 20.000 bugs and needed resources to get the capitol. This money would be better invested in some Level6 creatures. Let high level creatures do the fights and youll get more money per day then your loved capitol will ever get.

Going for capitol maybe works against the computer (so its totally ok if u continue to play that way), but against a experienced player ull get crushed heavy, no matter which difficulty u play. Before your Hero has developed (due to the fact that he cant do heavy fights) and before u actually have an army (u already missed two weeks of production of important troups), your opponent will come over and take your loved capitol.

Btw. i almost never built a capitol ..in most cases its just a waste of money and building steps.

okay I don't play multiplayer but I'm willing to learn.   What's a good build order for multiplayer?

And does it matter what size map you are playing?  You say that in two weeks its common for an opponent to find you and win.   But is this possible on maps with large size and  presumably strong creatures all over the map to impede progress and soak up the attacking army?   Or do people using play maps of size medium and less?

also, you say you never build a capitol.  Is that because games usually end before the first month?   If not, then why not?  A capitol pays for itself in just 3 turns after you build it.  From then on its pure profit.  You'll be earning at least twice as much then if you had just stuck with a city hall.   Eventually, your main hero is going to run out of treasure chests and banks/crypts/hoards/stash etc... right?

Most of the games end week 3 or 4, Fishjie.

Don't forget the 10000 gold invested, for only 2000 per day gain, which makes the profit to come only from day 6 onwards.

Well dont believe in fairy tales. There is no such thing as "standard multiplayer game"...means: Heroes 3 will always be Heroes 3 ...if something is good in multiplayer it is good in single player too.

If someone plays against the comp, he think he needs money (therefore build money buildings) and huuuuuge magic. Literatelly all new posters here in this forum, start to explain that this is the way to go. But just because u can win against the comp with it doesnt mean it is really effective.

In millions of online games made human against human in the biggest heroes communities showed that the following main strategies are most successful:

1. Try to built creature dwellings as soon as possible to get reasonable creatures as soon as possible.

2. Take a might hero over a magic hero. The might hero will keep your reasonable creatures alive and will develope faster. Also his secondary skill is 2 times better.

3. Never take experiences out of chests, always take the money. Money will give u creatures that allow you to gain more experience.

Of course there are always exceptions to the rules. Many players follow those rules tooo strict, which makes them vunerable. My personal favorite is to surprise my opponent with Grid(Magic Hero), Tactics and Defense, when is see an orb and a bliss early in the game.

Try to follow these three rules in your offlinge game and tell me if this did improve your game.

Xarfax1

PS: Learn to fight "within the hp-range" of a reasonable creature. Example: If u get 2 Efreetis day 3, part them in single unit and watch their 90 hps during the fight...you wonder what they can do with a might hero on their back.

ah well i can definitely agree with the take money in chest over xp rule, because in the heroes 2 SP campaigns, money was always in short supply (castles only gave up to 1250 gpt max), so getting gold early on was vital.  and i stuck with that habit.

i'm still a little shocked to learn that games only take 2-3 weeks to finish, so i will try to do so 1v1 with my friend using what i learned here.

It really depends what template you play. You can download diffrent templates on toheroes.com. A template determines how the random map is build up. If you play jebus the game will usually end week 3 or early week 4, balance week 4 or 5, skirmish week 3 or 4, blockbuster week 4, 5 or 6, true random xl week 5 or 6 and extreme week 5, 6 or 7.

Building capitol week 2 is normally a good thing but only if you have build your lvl 6 dwell and castle or citadel week 1 and only if you still manages to build all dwells and castle week 2. In all templates except jebus its a good thing to build capitol at some point.

When you are thinking about building a city hall and a capitol, try to determine up front if you'll be better off with or without it. You'll always want castle in your main town, so lets assume you already have it. That leaves mage guild, blacksmith, marketplace, city hall and capitol still to be built. That adds up to almost 20K including the required resources. This means you'll need to spend 2-3 days building the prerequisites and then wait 7 more days until the capitol and the city hall pay off and start producing money. If you know that the game will last for 2-3 more weeks, you should probably go for it. But if say, you aren't playing one of the long templates maretti mentioned and you have 2 naga banks and a dragon utopia nearby, then it may be a better idea to buy and upgrade all your troops instead, take those buildings as early as possible and be on your way towards your opponent.

this leads me to the conclusion that everyone hates it,but even so they all go stbborn and try to give this town another chance because some folks automatically go for it.

personally i like playing stronghold these days

Well anyway, I voted for Necropolis.

Not because of the necromancy skill, even though it is pretty sweet. I'll pick thousands of skeletons anyday!

But actually because of maybe my favorite creature, the Vampire Lords! I never lose them, because they heal themselves! w00t! Probably one of the best special creature abilities in the game!

Oh and the Ghost Dragons! Ageing is very handy.
