I beg to disagree with you, Angelito. For me, it brings more pleasure to look and fight for resources during the game than to have everything you need in your resource pool on day 1. The game is more satisfying that way...

I have changed favourite town so many times that only Inferno, Tower have never seemed great to me. In fact they suck bad. Well, if u got orrin Tower is good, not else. Which is not very likely to happen.
Both have the same weakness almost. Way too expesive for what u get.

1st I liked castle most as newbie. AA's is the best unit and and all units are above average and useful. But as time went by I got more and more frustrated by some things. Building order is terrible that u will miss out on too many units 1st week. Zealots hp is poor and not much better than magi's. Getting fewer cavs hurts and Griffins are overvalued. So it becomes all about angels. Still a good town but nah.

Then I liked Dungeon as my fav. Nice extra buildings lika mana vortex and portal of summon.
You get many units out of the blocks and the shooters are good. Minotaurs and Scorpies I really liked. But then no native terrain sux. And then the dragons are good but u can't ress them which i don't like. A bit too low hp on some creatues also. Not getting lvl 7 1st week sux and a town a bit on the expensive side.

Then rampart became my fav town. Liked the early combo and the first 3 lvls are really good. Then i got tired of the higher lvls. Pegasi are too weal. Dendroids too slow and the Dragons are not that fun since u can't ress them but u can implode them. And no dragons week 1 isn't fun. But overall still a good town.

The Stronghold appealed to me most. Really cheap town and ABs are really good for their price. Easy to get lvl 7 army and very good early on. Still the low lvls sux. Goblins, riders and orcs are hopelessly bad.
So it's hard to stay alive or have an army more than just behemoths in the end.

And finally my fav town now is Fortress. Got a very sturdy army and can't take a lot of beating and still stand. Not to everbodys liking but it's a pain to meet this army. All armies can hurt u more than just with a straight damage attack. Some bless, teleport on these guys and it's serious trouble. Still has no really good army that u can depend on but no real bad unit that is weak or worthless.

So i'd rank them:

Fortress
Stronghold
Rampart
Dungeon
Castle
Tower
Inferno

I was wondering what town you guys like so I can better understand your point of views when you post. (Looking at Xarfax, angelito, Maximus and other vets!)

I like Tower best, but I fancy rather many factions. Necropolis, Castle, Rampart and Dungeon are also good sides to play.

Stronghold and Inferno are sides I don't prefer to play, but can do. Most because I don't like the look of the cities (especially Inferno), but also because I think many of the creatures here are rather dull. That's my opinion anyway. Fortress I'd rather not play. My definitive bottom of the list. I'm not shure why, but I think it has to do with not so good city-music, too slimy/green creatures and I really don't like their swampy home soil.

Keep in mind that this is my list of sides I fancy, I have not taken into consideration how good they are.

Me.

Hi all,

I think no questions Castle is the best town overall.
It has the most balanced army and the best 7th level creature.

My list is as follows:

1. Castle
2. Necropolis
3. Dungeon
4. Rampart
5. Conflux
6. Stronghold
7. Tower
8. Inferno
9. Fortress

This isn't a easy one,all factions have a stronger and weaker side...except Inferno.Only good about them are few heroes,so my list would be:

1.Necropolis - They suit me best
2.Dungeon - Excellent faction overall
3.Castle - Champions and Angels tell it all
4.Rampart - Can be very dangerous
5.Tower - Expensive,but good,especially Nagas
6.Conflux - Although i dont like them,in right hands they are devastating
7.Stronghold - Good faction, but it doesn't goes well with my playing style
8.Fortress - Too slow + no mage guild = average faction
9.Inferno - I like demons, but this...this is plain crap.Only good unit is Efreet and he has too little HP for fire shield. One range unit tops it all

From 4 to 8 i'm open for change,but 1,2,3 and 9 are final

ok now i know u guys are saying the castle is a noob place but for me nothing can beat it. For one i love the cheap cost of the lower lev creatures like the archers and pikemen or swordsman depending on the game. Do to that low cost i find it very easy to grab all the supplies laying around and sieze my first castle i can normally have a good army capable of withstanding most attacks in the first few  weeks i mean like archers in the 70's swordman 50's griffens (this is in the 3rd one) good amount of calvary so on. I have noticed and yes i know this makes me fall behind in the race for supplies but if u don't go farther then 3 days away from ur castle for the first few weeks u have a army capable of crushing the starting enemy hero and if done right with the right balance of magic if u have any that is and pure power be able take the starting castle and put a major thorn in there arse =) I will admit it's been long time since i played 2 or 3 and had this the first time i even knew there was a site like this so i have yet to try to remember my good battles and just got 5 back a few days ago so i may be way off of my words so sorry if i am excuse my noobness =D

now for 5 i love the sylvan. The mix of long range with like 70 master hunters and the master druids (or what ever they are called) with 40 silver unicorns and 30 of the upgraded treetants 200 sprites and 1 green dragon managed to fight off 3 full armies that had about 4 months to prepare and 3 castles including the ever persistant and annoying haven =) my point here is the mix of the range and heavy ground troops is imho unstopable if used by a master player unicorns being the best and the only creature that can stand toe to toe with both champions and angles at the same time and still hold there ground. As i said before sorry if i am way off and i'll on this =)

3rd up for my list is necro from 5 the abilty to reserect the forces is amazing to me i love getting 400 of the skeleton archers and raining hell on the slow moving creatures =) i don't much care for the weaker deffense of them but i still think the overwhelming number overcomes that flaw in someways

In heroes 3, I've always liked the Necropolis the best.
Don't know why, maybe its the creatures or maybe its just the look and feel it gives.
Its also great having the shroud of darkness, the computer seems to leave me alone more. But I hate it when the computer player has it.

After that its hard to pick but maybe the conflux would be second.
Also like dungeon because you get red & black dragons, and other cool creatures. Rampart is good becasue you get green & gold dragons.
A few Infernos are good too because then you can eventually get the castle gates which are useful.

Definitively Necropolis. The town is fast, its creatures are strong, and, unlike many other towns, they don't need other towns' heroes to be effective.

Closely followed by Stronghold and Castle because of how easy it is to build the 7th level creature dwelling and castle on the first week.

Well my favorite is conflux (sue me) BUT I only really like it because of crazy lvl 2 and 3 people (plus shooting). The energy elementals are cool (but they ). And the only person without a cool special ability when they upgrade is magma.
Order I like.
1 CONFLUX
2 castle
3 dungeon
4 necropolis
5 rampart
6 tower
7 barbarians
8 inferno
9 that swamp place

Here are my preferences and opinions on towns :

Conflux - didn't play it in a while but I don't like the lineup doesn't seem as homogene as the other towns, also I curently only have the originla HOmm3 instaled so I can't say a lot about them

Necro - pretty cool, weakest level 7 but strongest level 6, and vampires, wraiths and walking death are pretty weak, overall good town with style

Castle - good and expansive, all strong units

Fortress - I dig them now, with their defense stats hard to kill and can get fast Wyverns, best spells would be if you get forgetfulness or teleport and expert water magic, also cure or dispell to negate opponents magic

Dungeon - good shooters, probably strongest level 5, overall strong and kinda costly

Tower - awesome shooters but heroes seem to lack in movement points (that might be my version of Homm 3 or something ), superior magic, also early upgraded gremlins can clean a lot of monsters on the map

Inferno - used to be my fav like 7 years ago cause of the fireball of magogs, but nowadays since I don't know how to demon farm they are the weakest to me

Rampart - solid, strong level 1 and 2, the only one shooter a effective damage dealer but dies fast

Stronghold - can get to Rocs and behemoths pretty fast, hard to get cyclops cause of the crystals, very strong and agressive town

Well, the reason I never mentioned Necropolis and Conflux when I compared towns was because those 2 are way too overpowering.

Conflux had a growth of 4 lvl 7 each week compared to all other towns getting 2....
Just that fact is detering and makes it so easy.

Then you can mention the ridicoulus lvl 2 unit(Storm Elemental) which no other town comes close to.

But if you want little challenge Conflux is for you I guess.

Or... you can play with no challenge at all and pick Necropolis.
Expert haste and a 1000 skeleton warriors  and it is game over for anyone else. Let's face it, the necromancy skill is not in any way balanced to give any other town a fair chance unless there are very few armies on the map.

I tend to play necros town allot.  And I don't find them over powering.  I mean yes the haste and  1000 skeletons are a good combo, but I find you can dispatch them very easily.

If you lucky enough to have implosion then there is all your problems solved unless they have that orb(can't think of the name)

But I can play with all towns.  other than the necros town,I like to play with the rampart town.  Good defence city to play with.

1) Necropolis - My favourite town. Strong 4-6 lvl units, lots of skeletons and sometimes even bone/ghost dragons (made from gathered hydras and dragons in the skeleton transformer), great heroes. With Vampire Lords, Animate Dead (see in your local Mage's Guild) and Necromancery you are not loosing creatures even in harder fights. Two heroes with +350 gold can support Galthran and Isra. Not that useful zombies ok for garrison (Straker). Immune to many spells (curse, blind etc.) and creature abilities.
2) Fortress - Most beautiful town (inside), really good heroes (Tazar Alkin and heroes with "creature bonus" at the beginning - Drakon, Wystan, Korbac, Bron), some interesting units. Beastmaster can learn all good skills. Weak in their Mage's Guild (give them four level guild and good chance to get prayer and I will be a happy person). Hard to get to their towns and conquer them. Fortress Scout with dragon fly is running through swamps like hell. I really miss Fortress in HoMaM IV.
3) Inferno - Fast town. You can gather many demons (through sarificing creatures from conquered towns) and then use them properly with Marius. With Grail structure you can fill the world with imps (Ignatius could use that). Main "antagonist race" in M&M universe. Slightly mad.
4) Stronghold - Many good and even great heroes (Crag Hack, Dessa...) but relatively boring units. Destined to be conquerors. Advanced Ballistics included (cyclops). If you get in their land, you should know, what are you doing. Behemot is the smiling beast. -> Using the greatest advantage of barbarians properly - great Attack skill.
5) Dungeon - Again really good heroes but boring units. Gunnar is the local Road Runner. With lvl 2-4 units he can clear the area very fast and he is hard to catch even by stronger heroes. Good special buildings (especially mana vortex). Malekith (etc.) with few dragons and Armaggedon (etc.) can prepare even self-confident Crag Hack for your main hero. Shakti is great for small maps.
6) Castle - Completely boring town. Because of packed Leadership (knight class) they are destined to mix units from different towns (althought they dont need it that much). Sorsha is a good hero. Sir Mullich from Armageddons Blade is even a great hero but with horrible portrait (he looks like a damned computer programmer to me ). Archangel is welcomed in any town and he is the second fastest unit in the game (really useful). They have one of those mad diplomacy heroes - Adela.
7) Tower - Three really good shooters and all units are useful (more or less). Their heroes are horrible (Neela is ok). Give them Orrin and the game becomes a turkey-shooting. Again hard to conquer (because of snow, three shooters, landmines and relatively strong magic scouts). Artifact merchant and library coud be useful. Their diplomacy hero (Cyra) is actually ok because of her specialization. Their Grail building is sometimes very useful.
8) Rampart - Beautiful town on the first sight. But boring again. Dwarves have magic resistance and unicorns add magic resistance to units around. Dendroids are useful if you need to defend your town. Their diplomacy hero (Ryland) is sick, because he comes even with leadership and his specialization makes denroid faster (and thus useful again for a wandering hero). With Kyrre and few Grand Elves you can clean the area around your town very quickly, but they could still use another shooter because rangers often have archery as their secondary skill. Leave denroids in the garrison and you have a really fast town. Their grail building (luck bonus) is ok.
9) Conflux - Very strong town, but idiotic. I mean it's like it was their (NWC) second best choice after zombies with Bazookas. Planeswalkers can get all good skills (hmmm Monere as the main). They have great lvl2-3 shooters and they have the fastest unit in the game (that means they are more or less the fastest "race" in the "race" ). Their special building (magic university) gives them a great advantage. They are practically invincible with their grail structure (which gives them all spells - and four units are immune to armaggedon). And moreover what kind of upgrade is ice, magma, storm and energy elemental? Fortunately they mixed (one might say "again") Conflux with Rampart in HoMaM IV (although the same thing damaged Kreegans and Necromancers).

1. Dungeon! 'cause minokings f***s everyone, harpyhags are annoying and black dragies are fit perfectly for high level Armageddon. Well, dragies are good on their own (but what a shame they unresurrectable)...
2. Inferno. If you have more than 1 inferno you could bash around easily the AI. Against human they are a challenging faction to play! Efreet sultans and archies work well with prayer
3. Tower & Rampart, cannot choose, sorry... And if you combined their armies... AI and human opponents will suck soooooo many under the command of a trained wizard (with leadership and tactic! these are important if you mixing them!).
4. Necropolis. Knights could bash out the snow from enemies and can curse toooo... Vampie-lords may be useful sometimes but dragons of this faction sux, no: SUX!!!
5. Fortress. Why? Why not! Flies, gorgons and hydras could terrorise the battlefield! And if they defending, attackers will f*** themselves...
Lasts. Stronghold, Conflux and faggy castle... Hate them. Almost unplayable factions. Only purpose of them to be killed down. Just hate them...
