"Popular =/= good" is a fact

So I assume Formula 1, Milka chocolate, sunglasses, rock music, video games, poker, etc. are all bad things because they're popular.

Sorry for spamming here but this is incredible...

Just because popular =/= good doesn't mean popular = bad. How popular something is has little to do with how good it is.

This little misunderstanding could've been easily avoided if used English instead of signs i.e. What's popular is not necessarily good.

Just saying.

Well first of all of course this depends on the "something" in question.

If Pentium 4s are popular, that doesn't mean they're better than a Core i7. (you can even measure it) Seriously...

Oh wait we were talking about music. Well that has a long answer. And can be subjective.

But it also doesn't mean they are NOT good, right?
Get it straight and stop riding a dead horse...

If something is popular, it means, a lot of people like it. And if a lot of people like it, it has to be good (in THEIR opinion). Now if YOUR opinion differs...fine...but it is STILL good for the others, because your opinion isn't that much of a value in such a case

Right. But no one said that they aren't. Because we (not MJ fans) didn't use the popularity argument

Yes, so it means it's all subjective. Therefore statements like "King of Pop", which express some kind of fact, have no basis.

If a majotity has the same subjective opinion (like in elections for example ), it turns into a fact pretty soon. And as long as you (and a big majority behind you of course) can't name any other musician between the early 80ies and late 90ies, who was more popular than MJ, you have to accept the term "King of POP" as a fact.

Or why is Ali still called "The Greatest"? There are/have been other boxers who have a much better record than him...

It honestly amazes me why people post in threads that either they have no interest in or only negative things to say.  Take Soccer.  I have no interest in the sport, so I would post in the soccer thread ... why exactly?  If I had to in mod mode because it got nasty..maybe.

Now don't get me wrong, I like debate.  It is healthy and interesting.  Even a bit of off topic is ok, to a certain point.  Just coming in and posting things like "this thread sucks" or "why does this thread exsist" is not only pointless but insulting.  If you don't like a thread the option to not read it is there.  Nobody holds a weapon to your head and forces you to read it at all.

Sure I post sometimes questions like "Can somebody tell me what Sub and Dub have to do with..x" but that is because it is part of my job to try to keep things on track.  So..if you don't like a thread or a person, or whatever at least have something to ADD to the thread more then "This thread (or person) sucks." or the like.  Ok?

Edit : And about off topic.  We don't mind off topic, we really don't, to a certain extent.  As long as it is somewhat related it can be fun. However, please be aware that there are limits.  A thread called "Cats" can indeed talk about Dogs..but tanks?  When you have one of us scratching our heads trying to figure out what exactly one has to do with the other..you've probably gone a bit too far.

Facts are never gathered from popular opinion. God is a fact if enough people believe in him?

As for "King of Pop", I don't get your point at all. I already said that popularity doesn't say how good one is, and you tell me to name someone else based on popularity?

I think he's called King of Pop based upon how successful he was (not based on popularity), and that's a fact.

Here it is again, the typical TheDeath "I have no argument anymore therefor I have to question the meaning of one of the words you used" post.

I wonder when you will ask the meaning of the word "and" in a discussion.

You really never realize when the horse is dead, do you?
