Ah.  Well sorry but that one's staying closed; in fact, it's now deleted.  The last thing I need to moderate is a thread where people respond to random thoughts they pick out from other threads.  Either an off-topic response can be handled quickly, in which case it can be done in the original thread as a brief off-topic aside, or it is a topic deserving of broader discussion, in which case it should have its own home.

I object to the closing of the derailment thread. There is precedent for it (Bak made a similar thread in the past). Also, though Corribus was right to say that the OSM isn't for random topics, but there's a difference between "random" and "off-topic in the current thread". If the topic is appropriate for the OSM, I don't see a problem with it being discussed in a thread like that.

Wouldn't it be better to simply take the off-topic discussion to another thread that IS appropriate for it rather than make a "hodgepodge" thread? If a thread for covering the topic someone wants to discuss does not exist he can easily create a thread to continue the discussion that was off-topic in the original thread.

A hodgepodge thread could get confusing and have unfollowable discussions pretty quickly as discussions from several threads spill over into it.

I think the discussion in the abortion thread is veering off-topic. I don't mean to say that Corribus's latest post isn't worth responding to, but it requires such an extensive general discussion of morality that I don't have the time for at the moment, and anyway doesn’t belong in that thread. So my lack of response is not out of lack of counterarguments, or any thought that Corribus's ideas aren't worth responding to.

I don't think it's that insulting. A warning should be sufficient.

I don't need your help with "penalty nominations".  If you or anyone else feels offended by a post, you can HCM me and I will take it into consideration.

I don't think, post 7 on page 73 in the abortion thread wants to be a permanent one, maybe the moderation should help the poster not to feel ashamed anymore?

Seriously, the abortion thread is turning into another

Elodin: Makes a "Point".
Others counter.
Elodin: Answers with completely irrelevant points or dodges the arguments with logical fallacies(Strawmen is his favorite).
Others counter again.
Elodin still argues with the same arguments and giant walls of irrelevant text.
Others: "angered": begin to flame.
Elodin "Ha!, you begin to lose now, dont ya?"
Others: "Rage".

That thread is a giant clustersnow of rage and tension.

Seriously, I vote for locking that thread.

Heck, Seraphim, it's simply a war of attrition at this point.

You see, Cor made a beautiful post about what is necessary to reach a compromise and what is counter-productive for that, but of course he didn't mention that you cannot reach a compromise with religious fanatics, because religious fanatics are not interested in compromise. I mean, if you say 2+2=4 and some other people say 2+2=5 or 2+2=3 - where is the compromise? 2+2=3.5? 4.5?

So there is no compromise. God exists or not. He doesn't exist with 50%.

Which means, no discussion with Elodin that touches religious and nationalist turf - as opposed to, say, what game is cool - can ever reach any kind of compromise.

That means, this kind of discussion doesn't have the purpose to exchange "points" and maybe reach a synthesis or compromise - it's just a battle of attrition that amounts to not leaving a supposedly silly point of the opposition without refuting it.

Locking a thread doesn't help - it's simply a war of ideologies that will take its course.

Actually, I'm the one person in the discussion who has been referencing science and quoting embryologists and embryology texts. Certain posters just say over and over, "Uh uhhhh, a fetus is not human" even though DNA says the fetus is human and embryology declares embryos are unique human organisms.

Hah!!!!  I'm the one accused of introducing religion into the discussion. But is it others who are making a philosophical non-scientific argument that not all humans are people. I've been sticking to science and historical fact.

Those who have no rational counter to the points I've made now seek to have the argument silenced. Sad and typical of certain posters.
